Preller was going to punt on a season?Were trying to win," Preller said. We dont apologize for it. Were trying to win championships. Were trying to get to the postseason and do it year after year.Ray, the former Cy Young winner and two-time All-Star is pitching just about better than anyone in baseball these days. Hes 6-0 with an MLB-best 1.09 ERA in his last eight games (seven starts) since June 16, striking out 41 batters 49 innings. Only once during this stretch has he permitted more than one run.Casey Mize is healthy, and dominating. It will become permanent.Clearly, Mozeliak has earned the trust of Angels owner Arte Moreno, earning the right to make any trade he wanted outside of moving Mike Trout.The Angels were one of the busiest teams at the deadline, making five trades across the landscape, including three controllable players. They tradedright-handed starter Jose Soriano to the Toronto Blue Jays, outfielder Jo Adell to the Cleveland Guardians, reliever Ryan Zeferjahn to the Chicago Cubs, and veteran relieversBrent Suter to Atlanta and Kirby Yates to Pittsburgh.They received nine prospects in return, highlighted by prized shortstopArjun Nimmala from Toronto, whos ranked as MLB Pipelines 43rd-overall prospect. And surrendered.They dumped Skubal.They got three nice prospects, but none of the Dodgers top five prospects.Rival executives were surprised that the Tigers didnt wait until the last hours, seeing if the Brewers would increase their offer, or someone else would jump in.They instead took the Dodgers offer 48 hours before the deadline. Why so early? Why not create a bidding war?Yet, instead of continuing to dump, they went halfway.They traded starter Casey Mize at the buzzer. But they kept infielder Gleyber Torres. And reliever Kyle Finnegan. And closer Kenley Jansen.So they can tell their fans theyre still kind of going for it, even though they just gave away the best pitcher in the American League.Make it make sense.New York YankeesThe Yankees told the world they badly wanted a catcher, desperately sought a back-end reliever, and offensive help.Well, after acquiring infielder/outfielder Luis Garcia Jr. from the Washington Nationals on Sunday, they traded for defensively-challenged outfielder Heliot Ramos from the San Francisco Giants.And, believe it or not, that was it.Oh, they talked to the Orioles about Adley Rutschman. They tried to pry catcher Ryan Jeffers from Minnesota. They were in plenty of conversations about another late reliever.And came away empty-handed.The Yankees are going to have to hang onto dear life just to make the playoffs. Theyre not going to catch the Tampa Bay Rays. They're probably going to get caught by the Boston Red Sox.They are praying on a return to health from Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger.Privately, the Yankees will tell you they are much more concerned than theyre conveying publicly about Judge, and are terrified that he might not be able to return this year from his fractured rib.And if Judge doesnt come back, well, then maybe it doesnt really matter that the Yankees didnt do much.Arizona DiamondbacksThe Diamondbacks, who have surged into the second wild-card spot, told everyone they hoped to be aggressive at the trade deadline. They wanted at least one starter, a big bat, and another late-inning reliever.The only bat they received was St. Louis Cardinals left-handed hitting outfielder Lars Nootbaar. He happens to be hitting .234 with three homers and 16 RBIs.That was it.The Diamondbacks got Nootbaar, but look at what the three teams did who theyre battling for a wild-card berth:Lets see, the Phillies traded for a three-time batting champion. The Padres grabbed two front-line starters. And the Cubs acquired multple starters and relievers.The Diamondbacks just might be going into this wild-card war with a squirt gun.Milwaukee BrewersThey may be considered a loser at the trade deadline, but come on, you know theyll get the last laugh.They always do.The Brewers, who have the best farm system in baseball, bid on Tarik Skubal, but fell short when they refused to include their top prospects.They could have jumped on the top starters available, or some of the relievers, but instead settled on Colorado Rockies reliever Antonio Senzatela, St. Louis Cardinals starter Dustin May and left-handed reliever JoJo Romero.Senzatela, 9-2, 3.61 ERA, has been one of the best right-handed relievers this year. May has been wildly erratic, but has talent, and was yielding a 2.54 ERA and averaging 6.19 innings during a 12-start stretch. Romero was considered the top left-handed setup man last year with a 2.07 ERA, but is now on the injured list after undergoing an emergency appendectomy in mid-July.When the trade deadline ended, you figured the Brewers would certainly do more, particularly considering the rival Cubs went out and were one of the days most aggressive buyers.Oh, the Brewers could still win the most games in baseball. They might even be able to hold off the Cubs in the NL Central. Colorado Buffaloes projected starting quarterback Julian Lewis was named to the watch list for the 90th Maxwell Award, the Maxwell Football Club announced Monday.Lewis joins an elite group of 81 candidates for the award, which is presented annually to the most outstanding player in college football. He is one of 15 Big 12 Conference players to make the list.The former five-star recruit played in four games last season, completing 52-of94 passes for 589 yards and four touchdowns. Outside of the World Cup, golf has produced some of the most interesting and entertaining bets of the summer. That was again the case last weekend with the Rocket Classic on the PGA Tour. But in this instance, it wasnt a bet on the tournament winner that stood out most. Rather, it was a stunning parlay on Thursdays first-round groups, in which $25 turned into more than $150,000. More on that six-figure haul, a couple early big plays on college football odds and a one-dollar wager that profited five figures, as we recap the week that was in sports betting. A Hard Rock Bet customer compiled a nine-leg threesomes parlay, on which golfers would post the best score in each group. The bettor wagered $25 at massive odds of +974568, or in easier-to-read terms, just shy of 9746/1. Then darn near got the whole enchilada, as eight players came through. However, Mark Hubbard saw his 66 matched by playing partner Emiliano Grillo. So that leg of the parlay was a push and was therefore removed, which ostensibly cut the odds in half, to +487233 (about 4872/1). Still, odds approaching 5000/1 represented a massive payday of $121,833.47. Furthermore, the bettor utilized a 25% profit boost promotion, so that hiked the payout to $152,285.59. Thats quite the ROI, hopefully enough to keep the bettor from thinking about what could have been, if only Hubbard shot one stroke better or Grillo one stroke worse. Had that been the case, the customer wouldve cashed out for a whopping $304,833.75. BET A LOT, WIN A LITTLE Week 0 on the college football oddsboard is less than four weeks away, opening with an abbreviated Aug. 29 schedule. Then things really kick into gear with a full Week 1 slate. That includes Texas opening its season as a 30.5-point home favorite vs. Texas State. The moneyline on Texas the odds of the Longhorns simply winning the game, regardless of margin are a huge -10000. Which means youd have to bet $100 to win just a dollar. A Caesars Sports customer took that to the extreme last week, dropping $400,000 on Texas. As long as the Longhorns dodge a monstrous upset, the bettor will profit all of $4,000, for a total payout of $404,000. On the national championship front, also at Caesars, a customer got a little more bang for the buck on Ohio State. The bettor put $15,000 on the Buckeyes +600 to win the College Football Playoff. If Ohio State, currently the favorite, wins it all, then the bettor pockets $90,000 profit (total payout $105,000). MORE TEE SHOTS DraftKings Sportsbook saw a couple notable winners emerge from the Rocket Classic, one in the first round and the other as the tournament closed Sunday. Ahead of the opening round, a DK customer put a modest $33 on Peter Malnati to emerge as the first-round leader. At odds of +32500 (325/1), Malnati wasnt expected to even sniff the lead on Thursday. But Malnati shot a scorching 7-under 28 on the front nine en route to a career-best and bogey-free 9-under 61. That was two strokes better than anyone else. So that $33 turned into a $10,725. Not a bad days work at all. And it was really the only good day for Malnati. He shot 1-over 71 on Friday, then went 74-74 on the weekend to end up way back in a tie for 68th at even-par 280. On the flip side, Michael Thorbjornsen started with a nondescript 1-under 69 Thursday, tied for 69th. Then he went 64-66-63 over the final three rounds to win the tournament at 18-under 262. That made a big winner of another DK customer, who put $1,000 on Thorbjornsen +4100 to win the Rocket Classic. The bettor bagged $41,000 profit (total payout $42,000). $1 HOLLER On Saturday, before the 15-game MLB slate commenced, a Hard Rock Bet customer placed a $1 dollar wager on a 12-leg parlay. Every leg was on a player to go over 1.5 total bases, and only four games were involved: Cubs-Yankees, Astros-Rangers, Guardians-Diamondbacks and Braves-Nationals. All 12 players did their part, and at eye-popping odds of +2589033 (about 25890/1), that lone dollar bill became a $25,891.33 windfall. Thats the kind of ROI we all can appreciate.

Larry Berg, co-owner of Los Angeles FC, will be the next commissioner of Major League Soccer, the league announced Monday. At the start of the new year, Berg will take over for Don Garber, who has served as the leagues commissioner since 1999. The 60-year-old Berg, who will divest his ownership interest in LAFC, will be officially introduced on Tuesday at MLS headquarters in New York. "Im honored to lead Major League Soccer into its next era," Berg said in a statement. "Thanks to the vision and commitment of so many people, Major League Soccer has achieved tremendous success, but I believe our greatest opportunities are still ahead. We have an extraordinary opportunity to strengthen the quality of our competition, develop more world-class players, deepen our connection with supporters, and continue elevating Major League Soccers place in the global game. Cameron Smotherman at Fury FC 12119-year-old prospect Jay Alderete put the name of a UFC veteran on his young resume when he choked out Cameron Smotherman.Fresh off a 1-3 octagon stint, Smotherman (12-8) gave Alderete (6-0) a test early in the bantamweight bout. Evnetually he got caught in a slick brabo choke by Alderete, who squeezed until his opponent went unconscious in the second round to add a notable win on his growing resume.Nominee: Valter Walker def. Thomas Petersen at UFC Fight Night 282Valter Walker kept his remarkable string of submissions alive against Thomas Petersen in their heavyweight bout, but with a change in technique.After going on a string of heel hook wins, Walker (16-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) pulled guard to work for his signature technique again. Instead, he wound up submitting Petersen (11-5 MMA, 3-4 UFC) by with the ultra-rare calf slicer just 92 seconds into the contest, giving him five straight octagon wins by tap out.View this post on InstagramThe winner: Paddy Pimblett def. Benoit Saint Denis at UFC 329Paddy Pimblett may have burned more energy during his walkout than the fight itself.Pimblett (24-4 MMA, 8-1 UFC) slept Benoit Saint Denis (17-4 MMA, 9-4 UFC) with a D'Arce choke a mere 52 seconds into their highly-anticipated lightweight clash.The fight was simple in terms of how it played out. Saint Denis shot for a takedown early and was immediately caught in a choke. Pimblett made some adjustments, most notably sitting his rear on the canvas with the choke locked in. Saint Denis tried to escape but instead his consciousness escaped him.Pimblett, 31, bounced back big from an interim title fight loss to Justin Gaethje in January. The loss was his first in the UFC and snapped a nine-fight winning streak. It was another big day at Steelers training camp as the team kicked off its second week of practice.The pads went on, and the intensity went up slightly.While the team is still ramping up, there was no shortage of excitement from the players. Head coach Mike McCarthy cautioned Monday morning that even though theyre in pads, theyre still in a bit of a restricted mode.Thursday will be the day he says thatll feel like a true training camp practice.No doubt players on both sides of the ball were eager to add a little more physicality into practice on Monday.The offense and defensive line battled in true pass protection drills, and the secondary was flying around in 11-on-11s.Channel 11 asked Pat Freiermuth if there was a little bit of extra excitement, extra juice out there. Yeah, a little extra excitement, a little nerves. Every single time you put the pads on the first time, a little nerves, and you know when the clock, yesterday, hits about five oclock, and I go ready for pads tomorrow. So its good. It was exciting for sure, Freiermuth said.McCarthy also gave clarification on Deshon Elliotts status.
