SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCubs get their ‘white whale’, send emphatic message with trade deadline haulJed Hoyer (left) talks with shortstop Dansby Swanson (right) before the game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-Imagn ImagesJed Hoyer finished his media scrum in the Cubs dugout at Wrigley Field with a simple phrase: Im tired.Who could blame him?Hoyers front office made a flurry of moves before the MLB trade deadline Monday evening, adding four new pitchers and an outfielder onto the roster in a 24-hour span.It was an aggressive deadline for Hoyer, who gave up quality young talent in exchange for a chance to go deep into the playoffs.Included in the haul was a starting pitcher Hoyer termed the Cubs white whale (Kevin Gausman), a veteran starter who also has vast experience pitching out of the bullpen (Clay Holmes), a dynamic reliever who piles up the strikeouts (Ryan Zeferjahn), a southpaw that will factor into future rotation plans (Braxton Garrett) and a right-handed-hitting outfielder that fills a need for this current team (Tyrone Taylor).Gausman, Holmes and Zeferjahn are the headliners here, especially given the Cubs obvious need for pitching this season (and down the stretch). In some ways, we were as focused as I can remember in a deadline, Hoyer said. It was very clear we needed to add pitching. The position player group has been excellent all year. The pitchers have fought through a lot of injuries that theyve been really resilient, but we wanted to add reinforcements and we certainly did that. The Cubs entered play Monday with the sixth-best record in the majors and the fourth-best run differential.Thats despite utilizing 35 different pitchers (plus one position player appearance) and handing the ball to 12 separate starters. The teams top two starters to open the season (Matthew Boyd and Cade Horton) combined for just 73.1 innings before Boyd took the mound against the Los Angeles Dodgers Monday evening.Despite the rash of injuries on the mound, the position player group has lifted the team to a 91-win pace behind a relentless offense and an elite defense. That impact was on full display Monday night as the lineup smashed four home runs off Dodgers All-Star Justin Wrobleski and made highlight-reel plays in the field, as if to send a message to the new pitchers that theyre about to get a lot of help behind them.pedro. ramrez. pic.twitter.com/6JHowzvW2E Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) August 4, 2026from way back at the warning track. pic.twitter.com/QwChxDg22f Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) August 4, 2026Hoyer sent a message of his own to the roster, rewarding their strong play by parting ways with important young players like No. 2 prospect Jefferson Rojas and catcher/DH Moiss Ballesteros. This year, we had really clear goals based on how the team has played, Hoyer said. The resilience this team has shown has been really special. I think we did the things that we felt like would honor that and reinforced the roster over the next 50 games. The way this season has gone, that was something that was really important with 50 games left.Hoyers aggressiveness at the deadline also carries an emotional and mental weight in a good way.I really love how this group goes about every day, Craig Counsell said. I think theyre not seeking validation for that theyre going to do that no matter whats going on. But I think theres some belief thats shown in the group here and what we can accomplish with the caliber of people that are coming here. And that fires everybody up for sure. That parts important. The Cubs currently hold the top Wild-Card spot in the NL, meaning they do not get a first-round Bye and instead would have to play a best-of-three series before advancing to the NLDS. That drags down the Cubs World Series odds a bit, but Hoyer and Co. still felt it was worth paying a hefty price to invest in this group. The other part is, its not easy to put these things together, Counsell said. I want to just emphasize that. You have to make difficult decisions and you have to give up good players and that all has to fit and make sense. Putting it together is not easy and credit to Jed for doing that.Gausman, 35, has an accomplished track record as a two-time All-Star who received Cy Young votes in 2021, 2022 and 2023. He has also made 14 appearances in the postseason, including six last year for a Blue Jays team that took the Dodgers to the brink in the World Series. He is a guy the Cubs have targeted for the better part of a decade, dating back to his time with the Baltimore Orioles, who made him the fourth overall pick in 2012.He was kind of a white whale-type target for us for a long time, going way back, Hoyer said. He kinda struggled early on and we kept asking about him and kept asking about him. He was with Baltimore and then he was in Atlanta and Cincinnati. We never acquired him. He went to San Francisco and he took off and we were like, ugh, weve been asking about this guy for years, thinking this is the talent he had.'Gausman instantly elevates the Cubs rotation, moving either Javier Assad or Colin Rea into the bullpen.Holmes will eventually be an impact pitcher for the Cubs, but they dont know exactly when. He is recovering from a broken leg suffered on a comebacker in mid-May, though he made his third rehab outing Sunday in the Mets farm system, building up to 73 pitches. The Cubs want to get Holmes in-house and discuss options with him, including making one more rehab start or folding into the big-league roster right away.Clay Holmes (35) throws against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first inning at Chase Field. Mandatory Credit: Rick Scuteri-Imagn ImagesThe 33-year-old Holmes kickstarted his career as a relief weapon in the Yankees bullpen, eventually developing into a closer that saved 74 games in three years. But he signed with the Mets prior to last season and made the transition to starter, posting a 3.26 ERA in 42 games (40 starts) over the last two seasonsWe love the fit from a shape standpoint, Hoyer said. Hes a fantastic groundball guy, doesnt give up a lot of home runs. I think putting that guy in front of this defense makes a ton of sense for us.Hes going to be a starting pitcher, but his track record as a fantastic closer is something thats a little added bonus, potentially.Unlike Holmes and Gausman who can both become free agents at the end of the season the Cubs view Zeferjahn as a long-term contributor on the pitching staff, under team control through 2030.The 28-year-old is enjoying a breakout season (3.66 ERA. 1.20 WHIP, nine holds, four saves). He has control issues at times, but can also miss bats at an elite level and his Statcast rankings jump off the page:Getting a guy with a great arm and great strikeout rate we dont have a ton of swing-and-miss in our bullpen, Hoyer said. The Cubs bullpen entered play Monday ranked 21st in strikeout rate (21.3%) while Zeferjahn whiffs more than a third of the batters he faces (33.5%).Garrett is more of a future consideration, though he does represent rotation depth this year if injuries hit the Cubs hard down the stretch. The 28-year-old southpaw isnt a free agent until after the 2028 season and is coming off the second major elbow surgery of his career. He was a huge part of the Marlins rotation in 2023, racking up 4.3 WAR while going 9-7 with a 3.66 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 156 strikeouts in 159.2 innings.Taylor will serve a vital role off the bench as a backup outfielder and right-handed option. He is hitting .301 with a .900 OPS against lefties this season. The Cubs added four players at last summers deadline, though the deals were smaller and reliever Andrew Kittredge was ultimately the only player who had a major impact. While it remains to be seen how each player will perform, this deadline represents a much different story. Hoyers aggressiveness has unquestionably made this Cubs roster stronger. Were more talented than we were 48 hours ago, he said Monday. These guys have battled and theyve done a really good job. Weve used so many different guys. Our coaching staff has done a terrific job with them, as well. But certainly providing more talent and more depth was something that was critical.0 Comments 0 Shares 44 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHorwitz drives in 3 runs, Pirates defeat Brewers for the 6th time in 7 games this seasonMILWAUKEE (AP) Spencer Horwitz hit a three-run double and the Pittsburgh Pirates extended their dominance over the Brewers this season, beating Milwaukee 4-3 on Monday night in the opener of a four-game series.Pittsburgh has won six of seven games against the NL Central-leading Brewers this season. The Pirates jumped on Brewers starter Brandon Sproat (3-7) in the third. Horwitz followed with a bases-clearing double that staked Pittsburgh to a 3-0 lead. The Pirates added a run in the fourth when Endy Rodriguez led off with a single and moved to third on consecutive wild pitches by Sproat, who was then replaced by Garrett Stallings, with Jacob Gonzalez still at-bat. Stallings eventually struck out Gonzalez before walking Henry Davis and giving up a soft bunt single to Jake Mangum that scored Rodriguez.Pirates starter Bubba Chandler (4-8) held the Brewers without a hit until David Hamiltons single up the middle with two outs in the fifth. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTop fantasy prospects moved at the trade deadline: Zyhir Hope, Jefferson Rojas headline the listThe MLB Trade Deadline has come to pass, and while it didnt feature a ton of superstars changing organizations -- the Tarik Skubal trade being the obvious exception -- there were plenty of good players moved before the clock struck midnight, or 6:00 p.m. ET to be more specific. And in exchange for those quality players, several talented prospects changed organizations over the deadline, with some seeing their stock rise by joining a new club, and a few maybe in a more tenuous situation.Heres the top ten fantasy MLB prospects who were dealt over the past few days.1) Zyhir Hope, OF, Detroit TigersTheres some debate as to who the better real-life prospect is between Hope and River Ryan -- the two big names from the Skubal blockbuster -- but from a fantasy perspective, its not particularly close. Hope is an outfielder who has a chance to help in five categories, and he joins the Detroit organization after slashing .293/.369/.530 with 23 homers and 18 stolen bases for Double-A Tulsa. The 21-year-old has easy plus power in his left-handed bat, and he complements that pop with well above-average speed. He makes plenty of hard contact as well, but hitting for average may be a little more difficult because of a willingness to work counts and some length to his swing. Hope offers more fantasy upside than any player on this list because of that power/speed combo, but his patience at the plate and quality defense gives him the highest floor, as well. Thats a good combination, and Hope could be in Detroit by the end of 2026 or beginning of 2027.Category help: HR, R, RBI, SB2) Jefferson Rojas, SS, New York MetsIf there was one prospect I was surprised to see moved, it was Rojas, and if Im being blunt, seeing him moved for Tyrone Taylor and Clay Holmes is even more surprising. Rojas is one of the better infield prospects in baseball, and the 21-year-old has been able to smash 15 homers and steal 17 bases with an .800 OPS in 91 games with Double-A Knoxville. Every tool for the right-handed hitter has a chance to be above-average, and while theres some concern he may need to move to third base, theres enough athleticism in Rojas profile to suggest he can stay up the middle. He may not be as quick of an advance as some names on this list, but Rojas has a chance to be an excellent fantasy option before the end of the decade.Category help: AVG, HR, R, SB3) Anthony Eyanson, RHP, Baltimore OriolesEyanson was not the first pitcher the Red Sox selected in 2026 -- well get to him in a second -- but he pretty quickly became the best pitching prospect in the system, and its a little surprising to see him moved in the deal for Adley Rutschman. The 21-year-old already shows a 70-grade (on the 20-80 scale) slider, and he complements that offering with a fastball that can get into triple digits, a solid splitter and above-average curveball. The control needs work, but Eyanson throws enough strikes to project as a starter at the highest level. A slight bump in his ability to locate gives him a chance to potentially be a fantasy ace.Category help: W, SO2026 MLB Trade Deadline Winners and Losers: Thoughts on the Red Sox, Brewers, Pirates, moreEric Samulski breaks down the winners and losers from a wild 2026 MLB Trade Deadline Eric Samulski,4) Arjun Nimmala, SS, Los Angeles AngelsNimmala comes from Toronto in the deal for Jose Soriano, and its very possible hes now the top prospect in the system, with all due respect to Tyler Bremner and a few other players. A 2023 first-round selection, Nimmala has easy plus power in his right-handed bat, and the ball jumps off his bat thanks to his bat speed and strong wrists. He also is a patient hitter who has drawn 141 walks in 281 games, but hes also struck out 304 times because of his patience and long swing. Hes a solid-average runner, but hasnt been much of a base-stealing threat just yet as seen in just six swipes over 62 games in 2026. He should be able to stay at shortstop, however, and this is a 20-year-old who could hit 30 homers while playing a premium position. You can do a lot worse than that.Category help: HR, RBI5) Enddy Azocar, OF, Baltimore OriolesAzocar is the second player on this list from the Rutschman deal, and not the last. Signed for under $50,000 in January of 2024, Azocar went from being unheralded addition to one of the breakout prospects in baseball thanks to an .881 OPS, 18 homers, and 28 stolen bases at the Low- and High-A levels. A right-handed hitter, Azocar has substantial power despite being in the 180-190 pound range, and he can make hard contact to all parts of the field. Hell need to show more willingness to do so to reach his potential 55-grade hit tool, but if he can, he also has a chance to be a 25-plus steal player. Azocar has more work to do than the other prospects mentioned, but it wouldnt be a huge shock if he ended up being the best player on this list, either. The risk is worth the reward.Category help: AVG, HR, SB6) River Ryan, RHP, Detroit TigersWe go from a player that may not debut until 2029, to a player that will turn 28 and made his MLB debut two years ago in Ryan. Baseball is remarkable. Ryan just might be the best prospect on this list with no fantasy implications. He has four pitches that flash plus, and he can throw all of them for strikes. He also has an average change, and the command isnt far behind the control either. The issue with Ryan is that hes been slowed by injuries for the last three seasons, and he missed all of 2025 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. That makes Ryan a riskier proposition than you might anticipate based on his profile, but if everything clicks and he can stay on the mound, he could be an ace.Category help: W, SO, WHIP7) Alexander Fras, OF, St. Louis CardinalsThe Brewers have become one of the truly elite talent-developers in baseball, and theyre taking a chance by moving a talent like Fras in return for JoJo Romero and Dustin May. Frias was given a $350,000 bonus last January, and after posting a solid .811 OPS over that summer, hes now slashing .342/.427/.553 with eight homers and 19 steals over 60 games in the Arizona League and Low-A Wilson. For a player that doesnt turn 19 until early March, Fras shows impressive power potential in his left-handed bat, but he also shows a keen eye at the plate, and the speed to someday be a major stolen-base threat for good measure. The only reason he doesnt rank higher on this list is because we need to see it at a higher level, but the upside here is considerable.Category help: HR, RBI, SB8) Kyson Witherspoon, RHP, Baltimore OriolesWitherspoon is the third player on this list from the Rutschman deal, and consider his lower placement more compliment to the names above than insult to him. That being said, its been a bit of a rocky first season for the right-hander as seen in a 4.78 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 17 appearances and 75 1/3 innings for High-A Greenville. Still, there was a reason the product of Oklahoma went 15th in 2025, as he had some of the best pure stuff of any pitcher in the class with three above-average breaking balls and a heater that routinely gets into the high 90s. The command clearly needs work, but considering he doesnt turn 22 for another three weeks, theres time for him to get that work in. It would be a mistake to give up on Witherspoon based on a poor four months.Category help: W, IP, SO9) Ramon Marquez, RHP, San Francisco GiantsOn top of getting Marcelo Mayer for Erik Miller -- one of my favorite trades of the day, but Mayer no longer has prospect eligibility -- the Giants were able to add to their talent pool by acquiring Marquez in the Luis Arraez-Caleb Kilian deal. A 20-year-old who signed with zero fanfare in 2025, Marquez has been sensational in 2026 with a miniscule 1.68 ERA and 93/19 K/BB ratio over 59 innings and reaching High-A. He can get his fastball up to 98 mph and scouts believe theres still projection in his 6-foot-2 frame, but his best pitch is a change that comes from the same arm speed and offers considerable late fade to make it a swing-and-miss offering against lefties and righties. He needs to improve his cutter, but he does throw that pitch and the aforementioned fastball/change for strikes. He needs to show it at the higher levels, but Marquez is one of the most underrated fantasy pitching prospects in baseball. It would be wise to try and procure his services in keeper/dynasty formats.Category help: W, SO, WHIP10) Boston Smith, C/OF, Seattle MarinersThere were a few players that received consideration in this spot, but ultimately, the offensive upside of Smith wins him this spot. A sixth-round pick by the Nationals who was originally acquired by Chicago in the Curtis Mead deal but then moved to Seattle on Saturday in the Luis Castillo four-player deal, Smith has raked in 2026 with an OPS 1.039, 22 homers and nine steals across three levels. Its worth noting hes been at his best in Double-A, as well, with a .306/.485/.667 (1.152 OPS) slash with eight homers in just 23 games with Binghamton. Obviously, Smith has considerable power in his left-handed bat, but hes also a patient hitter who can compensate for some punchouts with some walks and enough hard contact to project a workable average. The big question mark with Smith is defensively; and ultimately, he may need to move to first base or designated hitter. Because of his plate skills, hes a prospect who has a chance for success if that worst case scenario takes place.Category help: HR, RBIAlso considered: Josiah Ragsdale, OF, St. Louis Cardinals; Marty Gair, RHP, San Francisco Giants; Kash Mayfield, LHP, Detroit Tigers; milien Pitre, 2B, New York Mets0 Comments 0 Shares 52 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMVincent Kompany eager to see Bayern Munich defenders prove themselvesMUNICH, GERMANY - NOVEMBER 29: Jonathan Tah and Kim Min-Jae of Bayern Munich look on following the Bundesliga match between FC Bayern Mnchen and FC St. Pauli at Allianz Arena on November 29, 2025 in Munich, Germany. (Photo by M. Donato/FC Bayern via Getty Images) | FC Bayern via Getty ImagesBayern Munich was rumored to have interest in a few defenders during the summer, but nothing material emerged when it came to center-backs. As it stands, the Bavarians seem content to go into the season with Dayot Upamecano, Jonathan Tah, Kim Min-jae, and Hiroki It as the quartet in central defense. Were talking about competition, which I like and which is something Ive personally experienced. I played in the same roles as Minjae, Upamecano, and Tah. The most important thing is proving yourself on the pitch. I have to compliment Minjae: the way he presents himself, the way he performs on the pitch and the fact that he doesnt talk. He always has the right answer in every situation: his performances have always been top-notch for us. For me, its important to see him deliver the way he does. And accordingly, the others have to deliver as well. Thats what I want in every position, not just at center-back, Kompany said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). As of now, Upamecano and Tah seem to be far clear of Kim and It, but there could be an opportunity for more playing time if Kompany opts to use his bench more to keep players healthy and fresh. Maybe, Kim and It will get ample chances to prove themselves along the way this season something that might benefit the club.Join the conversation!Sign up for a user accountand get:New, improved notifications system!Fewer adsCreatecommunity postsComment on articles, community postsRec comments, community posts0 Comments 0 Shares 70 Views 0 Reviews
