Adley Rutschman was still adjusting less than 24 hours after being traded for the first time in his career. Being in playoff contention may make for a smoother transition once the three-time All-Star catcher is ready to take the field for the Red Sox after spending his first four-plus seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. "Just from playing here, the city loves baseball. It always has a great atmosphere and Im excited to play in it," Rutschman said Tuesday at Fenway Park before the Red Sox hosted the Chicago White Sox. "Theyre playing the game the right way and doing things right. It was cool to watch from a distance. Now being here, like I said just trying to fit in and help out any way I can." Rutschman joined his new club on the injured list with left wrist inflammation. He and Boston interim manager Chad Tracy said Rutschman would meet with the team's medical staff to determine whats next in his rehabilitation and how soon he could be back behind the plate. Tracy said Rutschman is already swinging a bat and the Red Sox were hopeful to add him to their lineup soon. Boston also wasnt about to rush the recovery of a player that cost it a handful of top prospects in a deal pulled off shortly before Monday's trade deadline. "Its been feeling good. Ive got to get with the medical staff here and kind of just see what the next steps are moving forward," said Rutschman, whos been on the IL since July 20. "I don't exactly know just what kind of timeline and how all that goes." Rutschman moved from the Orioles, who were 12 games back in the AL East and on the fringes of the wild-card race entering Tuesday night, to the Red Sox, who were 5 1/2 games out of the division lead and in position for a wild card after winning 23 of their last 26 games. The Orioles stopped Bostons franchise record-tying winning streak at 15 games last month, but reaching the playoffs appeared less likely for Baltimore without Rutschman, the top overall pick in the 2019 draft. "I played my entire career there and theres been a lot of unbelievable memories. Just made a lot of great friends for life," Rutschman said. "Its tough goodbyes. But were on to the next thing. And excited to be here and playing. Its all part of the game." Rutschman said part of his down time will include getting to know Boston's pitchers, although there was already some familiarity. "Ive seen a lot of these guys pitch and faced them," Rutschman said. "I kind of understand how they attack guys but Im definitely going to have some more in-depth conversations, just make sure that were on the same page and it flows smoothly when we get out there." Whenever that is, Boston will be glad to have him. "I think its a strong statement to the group with a player like that," Tracy said. "We went out and got a huge addition to our lineup and behind the plate. So it means a lot. Well work through getting him healthy and getting him out there. The Philadelphia Phillies acquired second baseman Luis Arrez ahead of the MLB trade deadline on Monday. Arrez was put into the starting lineup on Tuesday against the Washington Nationals, batting fourth and playing second. He has been adamant about wanting to be a second baseman, and his inclusion in the lineup forced Philadelphia to switch around its defensive look, resulting in Bryce Harper moving back to right field for the first time since 2022.The newest Phillies hitter paid early dividends in his debut. He is not known for power, with only four home runs, but is one of the most consistent hitters in the league, showing off his skills to the Philadelphia faithful in his first at-bat with the franchise. Kimi Antonelli has used four internal combustion engines, three turbochargers, four exhaust sets, two MGU-Ks, three energy stores, three control electronics units and five ancillary components.Now check that against the ceiling. The FIA spells the allocations out in plain language in its Spa report, where Isack Hadjar's engine was flagged as "the fifth (5th) of the four (4) new internal combustion engines allowed." Four ICEs. Four turbos. Four exhaust sets. Three MGU-Ks, three energy stores, three control electronics units, six ancillaries.Do the subtraction. The championship leader is out of engines, out of exhausts, out of batteries and out of control electronics. He has exactly one turbocharger, one MGU-K and one ancillary component left in the bank. Every other box is empty, and it's only August.What "empty" actually costsUnder the 2026 rules the elements are rationed individually, which cuts both ways. A cracked engine no longer drags the whole hybrid system onto the penalty sheet but each fresh element you take beyond your allowance is its own separate offence. Barring a genuine failure, the combustion side should coast to Abu Dhabi.The parts that should keep Brackley up at night are the ones with no headroom and a documented habit of quitting. Mercedes described Antonelli's Barcelona retirement as an electrical shutdown. Russell's Canada DNF was the same family of problem. Neither was a rod through the block they were the battery and the switching hardware, which is exactly what modern hybrid ownership looks like at every level of the market. Ask anyone who's had a plug-in hybrid stranded by a contactor or a DC-DC converter rather than anything with pistons in it.That's the awkward part for Mercedes. Energy stores and control electronics are capped at three, Antonelli has burned all three, and the failure mode that ended his Spanish Grand Prix lives in precisely those components. He isn't managing risk; he's managing a countdown.Wolff, for his part, has been unusually blunt in Mercedes' own race report about where the team's weakness sits, saying it needs to "keep developing and improve our reliability" if it wants to convert two championship leads into two trophies.The Monza logic, and why 2026 complicates itThe received wisdom says you take your medicine at a track where the field is easy to carve through, and Monza 80% of the lap at full throttle, a 1.1km pit straight, Norris averaging 263km/h on his 2024 pole lap has always been the friendliest place to start deep in the pack. There is almost no braking to harvest from, which means the cars scavenge charge at full throttle instead, giving up straight-line speed to do it. Recovering from 15th at a track where your battery is already rationed is a very different proposition than it was in the DRS era.There's also a scheduling trap. The teams reconvene at Zandvoort on 21-23 August, which F1 has confirmed is a sprint weekend one hour of practice, then parc ferm bites early and stays bitten. It is a terrible place to shake down unfamiliar hardware. Monza follows on 4-6 September with a conventional three-practice format, which makes it the first sane opportunity to commission anything new whether Mercedes wants the penalty there or not.What to actually watchAntonelli goes into the break 50 points clear of Lewis Hamilton and 59 up on Russell, with Mercedes 72 ahead of Ferrari, per Wolff's post-race debrief in Budapest. That is a cushion built for absorbing one bad Sunday, and a penalty served deliberately costs far less than a DNF served involuntarily Barcelona took 18 points out of his lead in an afternoon.If you want to know Mercedes' decision before the pundits do, skip the speculation and go to the FIA's document server on the Thursday and Friday of each event. The Technical Delegate publishes "New PU Elements for this Competition" before anyone gets near a microphone, and it states in flat regulatory language whether a fresh part conforms to Article B8.2.2 or not. That single PDF is the whole story, hours ahead of the press release.

Detroit Lions star running back Jahmyr Gibbs still isn't practicing as he stages a contract-related hold-in.On Monday, Gibbs was briefly approached by reporters and asked when he might return to practice."Only time will tell," Gibbs said on a return timeline.Gibbs said "it's not about that" when asked if he needs a new deal before he gets back on the field. CARROLL Even though there is change in the air, the expectations for winning will never change for the Bloom-Carroll football team.The Bulldogs have won or shared eight straight Mid-State League-Buckeye Division championships, and during the last four seasons, they have compiled an overall record of 42-12, including four consecutive playoff appearances and a Division III state runner-up finish in 2022.Steve Daulton takes over as the new head coach. He had previous head coaching stints at Berne Union and Amanda-Clearcreek, and for the last three years, he was the offensive coordinator at Lancaster. It takes time to get to know the coaches, but as of right now, August 3, we are more than prepared to go out and play a game tomorrow.I feel like we have an elite and disciplined team, and I think we are going to shock a lot of people. Eagar Round ValleyThis is a proud bunch that thrives on the underdog role. But they won't be in that role after winning state last year and returning one of the top players in 3A in running back Brody Crick. 3. Queen Creek CrismonCoach Scott Hare should find greater success in his second season at the helm, after having a full offseason with the players. Watch for the Rattlers to improve on last year's 7-5 record.4. Chandler Valley Christian The Trojans will be strong on defense and potent in the run game. ThatcherIt's an all-new backfield and three new linemen, but the Eagles are always in the hunt with the next wave of players ready to make an impact. Coach Daniel Jones expects them to mature as the season progresses into a solid playoff team. Top players returning include two-way lineman Vincent Bejarano, tight end/defensive end Teagan Damron and running back/defensive back Josh Jones.6. Tucson Pusch RidgeThis is a program that won the 3A championship in 2024, so the championship culture is there. After winning 10 games last year, watch for the Lions to challenge for the title, behind running back brothers Dylan and Cameron Shoaff.7. Mohave Valley River ValleyThey went 7-4 last year, losing to Show Low 21-14 in the first round of the playoffs. With running back Aden Montgomery (1,322 yards and 21 touchdowns rushing last season), the Dust Devils are hopeful of a long playoff run. They should know right away how good they are, opening at home against Crismon. 8. FlorenceThe Gophers went 7-5 and got to the quarterfinals, before losing to Pusch Ridge 51-38 last year. They played better the second half of the season. That should give them momentum heading into the season with the return of quarterback Brody Ramirez.9. Show LowThe Cougars open at home Aug. 21 against Florence, a team they beat 28-0 last year. This is a strong defensive team that will have to lead the way while a young offense matures. But, in the end, they look like they could get to the quarterfinals again.10. Gilbert Christian They lost to Valley Christian twice, including in the state playoffs. They also lost to Crismon and Benjamin Franklin. That tough schedule should help them come playoff time. Running back Camden Gorsline led them in rushing last year and receiver Malachi Ahlman caught seven touchdown passes. On the surface, Colorado Rockies outfielder Mickey Moniak appeared to be available at the trade deadline and was drawing attention. Behind the scenes, though, the Rockies were already negotiating a deal to keep him in town. Moniak agreed Tuesday to a $16.25 million, two-year contract that covers 2027 and '28. He gets $7.25 million next season, which would have been his final year of arbitration eligibility, and $9 million in 2028, when he would have been eligible for free agency under the current labor contract.Moniak has thrived at hitter friendly Coors Field since signing with Colorado in March 2025. He's hitting .277 with 18 homers and 49 RBIs across 75 games this season.Its no secret that I love it here, Moniak said before the Rockies faced the AL-leading Tampa Bay Rays. Ever since Ive stepped foot in Colorado and Denver and in this organization, it just felt like home.The 28-year-old, who has a $4 million salary this year, was the No. 1 overall pick by Philadelphia in the 2016 amateur draft. He's no stranger to being dealt at the deadline with the Phillies trading him to the Los Angeles Angels in 2022. He said that after Sunday's win over the Kansas City Royals he had a handshake agreement with the team.Its a crazy process. First time Ive ever done something like this, Moniak said. Just extremely happy, for sure.Moniak has become a leader in the clubhouse as the Rockies try to turn things around behind a new front office led by Paul DePodesta and Josh Byrnes. Colorado made several trade deadline deals for prospects Monday, sending reliever Antonio Senzatela to Milwaukee, outfielder Brenton Doyle to the Chicago White Sox and reliever Victor Vodnik to Miami. But after some calls with teams over the last few weeks they decided it was more prudent to extend Moniak.We all felt like the better thing to do for us was to keep him and not just keep him and play out the next year and a half, but really keep him, DePodesta said. He's very much a part of what were trying to be, both on the field and off the field. To be able to give him an extension is also just a message not just to the rest of our team, but hopefully to our fans and our market that were actually building toward something here.This deadline wasnt just about trading players away. It was actually about building toward something better going forward.The Rockies already have more wins this season than all of last year when they went 43-119 (their third straight 100-loss season). The Crew agreed to acquire 23-year-old forward Gonzalo Tapia on loan from Sao Paulo, according to a source on Aug. 4.Tapia, a native of Chile, has spent the last two years with Sao Paulo, a club in the top flight of the Brazilian league. In 2026, he registered two starts in 11 appearances and has yet to score a goal this season. He scored five goals in 12 starts and 20 matches played for Sao Paulo last season.Before Brazil, Tapia spent a year with River Plate in the Argentinian league. He started his professional career with Universidad Catlicain the Chilean Primera Divisin.Tapia will be placed in an international slot, but he will not be a designated player, a slot reserved for MLS teams for salaries outside the cap. The Philadelphia 76ers have had a busy offseason that puts them squarely in contention in the upcoming season. The Sixers were able to bring in Jaylen Brown and LeBron James to join Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe to form an elite starting lineup. Throw in the improvements to the bench unit and the Sixers are facing pressure to win it all.That's how it should be, though. The Sixers have been aggressive as they are looking to finally end a long title drought and they are looking to fully move forward under the guidance of President of Basketball Operations Mike Gansey and a retooled front office.Edgecombe is well aware of those expectations as he told ESPN's Chiney Ogwumike:It's championship or bust.
