Detroit Lions star running back Jahmyr Gibbs still isn't practicing as he stages a contract-related hold-in.On Monday, Gibbs was briefly approached by reporters and asked when he might return to practice."Only time will tell," Gibbs said on a return timeline.Gibbs said "it's not about that" when asked if he needs a new deal before he gets back on the field. The Lions' 5-foot-9, 202-pound star running back didn't elaborate much beyond that."What I'm aiming towards? Ah, I don't know," Gibbs said.The former 2023 first-round pick is seeking a long-term deal after establishing himself as one of the premier dual-threat running backs in the NFL.The three-time pro-bowler continues to attend meetings and team activities but is not practicing, continuing the question of when the potential Offensive Player of the Year will fully return. Without clarification from Gibbs' camp, the Lions are left waiting on one of their most important offensive weapons.Last season, the Dalton, Ga., native, rushed for 1,223 yards and 13 touchdowns. Gibbs averaged 5.0 yards per carry in 2025 and finished the season ranked among the top 10 in rushing yards, yards per carry, yards per game and rushing touchdowns. Gibbs' 616 receiving yards trailed only Christian McCaffrey and Bijan Robinson among running backs last season.The franchise exercised Gibbs' fifth-year option earlier this offseason, meaning he is under contract through the 2027 season. Lions head coach Dan Campbell has repeatedly downplayed concerns surrounding the star ball carrier, taking a position of confidence the situation will be resolved before the season kicks off.Gibbs' brief response offered little indication of where negotiations stand, leaving no clear timeline for his return. However, both the Lions and Gibbs seem comfortable allowing negotiations to play out.
