Free agent tight end Zach Ertz said in April that he didn't want his torn ACL to be the final act of his NFL career. He still is seeking an opportunity to make that wish come true.Doctors have cleared Ertz for all football activities, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. That should clear the way for Ertz to find a new team. He is working out at Stanford with his former college quarterback, Andrew Luck.Ertz, 35, tore the ACL in his right knee in a Dec. 7 game against the Vikings while playing for the Commanders.In his 13th NFL season, Ertz made 50 catches for 504 yards and four touchdowns for Washington. He has also played games for the Eagles and Cardinals and has spent time with the Lions.

Orem (Utah) junior edge Major Stokes is working on his game day visit schedule and has a pair of schools locked in early.Stokes is currently rated a four-star prospect and the No. 62 player nationally in the Rivals Industry Ranking, an equally weighted average that utilizes all three major recruiting services as well as the No. 10 edge in the country.We had a chance to see him at the Under Armour Next Camp in Utah back in April and he really looked the part of what a next level edge should look like.He checked in at nearly 6-foot-6, 240 pounds, up 25 pounds from a year ago, with an 80+ wingspan and over 10 hands and its easy to see why hes already a national recruit.Stokes took several visits this past off-season and has a handful of schools hes hoping to visit in the fall for the game-day experience.Im still working on dates but Im planning to visit USC, Michigan, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Alabama and Miami, Stokes said.Nothing is set in stone yet but Im working on those schools. I know Ill most likely visit USC when they host Ohio State (Oct. 31) and Michigan when they play Oklahoma (Sept.12).I dont have a date with Miami but Im looking at one of their late season games.Stokes spent three days at Michigan bacI loved it there, Stokes said. That was my second visit, I went for a Spring practice too so Ive already seen a lot of the campus and the football facilities.I really love the coaching staff and Lewis Powell (DL coach) is more than a coach, hes like a father figure. He was one of the first coaches to reach out to me when I was just in the 8th grade so Im really comfortable with him.Stokes camped with USC and the Trojans made a big impression as well. I really like Shaun Nua (DL coach) a lot, Stokes said. I dont know anyone who loves football more than him. I had a great experience at their camp, learned a lot and really enjoyed the competition.I liked the campus, its easy to get around and I had a strong comfort level. I met a lot of the players on the team and even went out to dinner with some of the guys including Luke Wafle. Thats another program I want to get back to for a game and I would put them in my top five as well.Stokes raved about his time at Miami as well.Miami is a top five school for me as well, Stokes said. I was there for a camp and a visit and I really enjoyed working out with the coaches. Coach Jason Taylor is one of the best in the country and you can see with how he was able to develop guys like Rueben Bain and Akheem Mesidor.Development is big for me and will be a big part of my decision and I know I can get that there. I also enjoyed getting to know Coach Cristobal. We had some good conversations and I would love to get back for a game.Stokes has yet to visit Oklahoma but has always talked up the Sooners. I really want to get out there for a game this season, Stokes said. Ive heard great things and really like Coach (Miguel) Chavis a lot.They have been on me hard this Spring, telling me I can be an impact player for them. Ive heard it a great family atmosphere there too with coaches bringing their kids around so look forward to seeing them up close.There was some talk Stokes could be making a summer decision but he said hes rush to pull the trigger. I want to wait until after my junior season, Stokes said. I want to play things out and Im really in no hurry right now.

Getting the proper buy-in to occur in any football program takes time and a great deal of patience to cultivate the development of any program in the right ways.Additionally, continuity in a program is vital to the above.In terms of building up numbers for a football program, the Valley Indians have executed the above blueprint to a tee.The results have shown themselves as well.Last season, Valley enjoyed its best year in a decade, finishing 8-3 overall and hosting a home playoff game while having three seniors Jaylen Bender (Drake), Anthony Aaron (Rio Grande) and Nolan Barnett (Rio Grande baseball) continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level.And to start the 2026 campaign, the Indians have a healthy number of bodies on its roster. Official numbers provided by the Valley football staff have the Indians, who will be an OHSAA Division VI program in terms of classification this season, with nearly 45 players in uniform as of July 31, one day prior to the official mandatory commencement of fall practice.With the amount of depth, and quality depth at that, both trending upward, and positive gains at the 7-on-7s behind an experienced group that includes 14 seniors, the excitement within the Valley camp is certainly noticeable.This includes both Isaiah Clark and Eli Clark, who are each looking to make their own impacts to the 2026 version of the Valley roster.I believe that we have a really good chance at contending for the league title, Isaiah Clark said. I believe we have a really good shot at it. Our 7-on-7s have looked really good, I believe, and our lines looked really good, too. I believe we can put it all together this season and do really well.Were continuing to improve, Eli Clark said. Thats our goal every time out. Were hoping for a perfect season, but we know that we have to take it week by week first. Were looking really good.Part of that is due to the continuity of the Valley football staff in general.The staff, which has seen nearly zero turnover over the past five seasons since Nolan Crabtree was hired to replace longtime Valley head coach and Valley Local Schools Hall of Famer Darren Crabtree in 2022, continues to be led by not only Crabtree, but former Morehead State University linebacker and All-Pioneer Football League standout Luke Keller as the teams defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, and former Cincinnati defensive lineman Kirk Thompson, who was a multi-year starter on the D-line with the Bearcats.Along with them, wide receiver and defensive backs coach Blake Howard, special teams coach Evan Richard, quarterbacks and defensive backs coach Chris Lundy, strength and conditioning coach Bryce Romanello and Valley offensive and defensive line coaches Scott Spriggs and Bill Berry are all on staff. Richard played a major part in Benders development as an All-Ohio kicker while Romanello was an outstanding athlete in his own high school days who played football and soccer simultaneously for multiple seasons and ultimately earned his own college opportunity at Shawnee State inside the mens soccer program there, starting as a defensive back.All of the above coaches are Valley graduates with the exception of Thompson, who played at Portsmouth. His daughter, Ella, is an upcoming senior who has been a star on the girls basketball team at Valley and is presently recovering from an upcoming injury, while his son, Kru, is coming up through the Valley Local Schools ranks as well.The staffs consistency, Isaiah and Eli said, have been critical in their own development as players.Weve had the coaching staff in place for all four years, and some of them in junior high even, so weve gotten to know them really well over the past six years, I think, Isaiah Clark said. Just having that relationship with them makes it easier as opposed to having a new coach with new formations and plays that we havent learned or the language that goes with learning new plays. It gives us better chemistry.Staying consistent and building relationships is really strong and really important, Eli Clark said. Weve done that pretty well.Its led to a roster that not only has a great deal of depth, but good size to build off of as well.Of the present player count, 24 Valley football players, or over half of the team, are at least six feet or taller with five additional players at least 5-11. While certainly not an indicator of a teams success on its own, the length that the Indians do sport gives Valley additional ways to experiment, project and develop.The roster is also relatively balanced in terms of class size, particularly in arguably the most important facet of the game the offensive and defensive trenches. Based on the roster, six players are seniors on the offensive and defensive lines, but thats followed up by three juniors, four sophomores and six freshmen.The additional depth has both Isaiah Clark and Eli Clark excited about what Valley can do.Were just going to have to be more physical as a team and as a whole, Isaiah Clark said. We just need to rally around each other. If someone gets knocked down, we need to get back up and rally to them.Playing with more grit and showing up for our teammates is always going to be huge, Eli Clark said. We have each others backs.This only adds to the point regarding depth, where the Indians, who have 14 seniors, cant slack with more positions up for grabs than in seasons past.It definitely makes a big difference having that many seniors as opposed to my freshman year, where we only had one senior that played, Isaiah Clark said. I believe more juniors and sophomores will make a big difference this year.. Theres more depth across the board. If one of us gets tired, we can put them in and know that we can trust them.Along with Isaiah Clark, Eli Clarks certainly taken notice himself. On the depth chart at wide receiver, there are as many as 15 different players who can play out wide. Isaiah and Eli represent two of the 15 players taking reps at the position.Weve got a lot more guys this year, and with wide receivers doing reps, its hard to get one in this year because theres so many people taking them, Eli Clark said. You practice with more purpose now. Instead of knowing where you stack up with your position, youve got to show out. Its looking really good to start the year.Its really fun, Isaiah Clark added. It builds us up. We cant come in and just be comfortable. You have to be on your A game every single day when you come into practice.The added numbers only add to the anticipation of what could be ahead in 2026.Im so excited, Isaiah Clark said. Im ready for football to start. I cant wait for our first game. Im ecstatic to get it going.Its coming up super quick, Eli Clark said. Were all very excited to get the season kicked off.

BALTIMORE Twenty-four hours after trading away franchise face Adley Rutschman, the Orioles had a choice.They could let the emotions of Mondays trade deadline linger. Or they could turn the page.They chose the latter, defeating the Angels, 3-1, to begin the final 50 games of the season with a much-needed win. Left-hander Cade Povich, recalled Tuesday to fill the rotation spot vacated when Dean Kremer was traded Saturday, dueled with former Oriole Grayson Rodriguez, tossing six scoreless innings and striking out seven, his most this season.Along with Povich, who made his first start for Baltimore since May 7, the Orioles (55-58) also saw the team debut of catcher Carlos Narvez, acquired from the Red Sox in Mondays trade for Rutschman. Christian Franklin, acquired from the Nationals on Monday, made his major league debut.Franklin made an almost immediate impact, drawing a walk to open the third inning in his first plate appearance. He later scored when the Orioles loaded the bases with no outs, and Pete Alonso lined a one-out single to center, bringing home Franklin and Colton Cowser to give Baltimore a 2-0 lead. The outfielder finished the game 0 for 2 with the walk and run scored. Narvez went 0 for 2 and was hit by a pitch in the third inning to load the bases.Before the third-inning surge, Baltimores offense was quiet, with no baserunners reaching in the first two frames. The Orioles returned to that form over the next three innings as Rodriguez retired nine straight.Baltimore threatened again in the seventh when Coby Mayo hit a one-out triple, but he was later tagged out at home after trying to score on Franklins grounder to shortstop. The Orioles came away empty despite Franklin stealing second with two outs.Rodriguez exited the game following the inning, tallying six strikeouts on 98 pitches while allowing just three hits.Baltimores 2018 first-round pick was traded to the Angels (43-70) for outfielder Taylor Ward last November. Ward, of course, was dealt Monday after leading the American League with 87 walks in 111 games for the Orioles. Baltimore received right-handed reliever Alex Hoppe and minor league pitchers Brock Moore and Harrison Kreiling in return from the Mariners.Rodriguez has not had the cleanest start to his tenure with Los Angeles. He opened the season on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation, made his debut in mid-May and later sustained a back strain that sidelined him for a month.After missing the entire 2025 season with arm injuries, Rodriguez had been unable to recapture the form that produced a 3.86 ERA with Baltimore in 2024. His ERA sits at 7.24 after Tuesdays start.Povich, meanwhile, had made four appearances for the Orioles this season, including three starts, before going on the injured list May 8 with left elbow inflammation. He entered Tuesday with a 6.30 ERA in eight starts for Triple-A Norfolk, but manager Craig Albernaz emphasized before the game that Povich was fully healthy and had previously shown encouraging command.We all know he has electric stuff, Albernaz said. Were pumped to have him back, pumped that hes healthy, and were excited to see where hes at.Povich allowed seven hits and just one walk, giving the Orioles reason to believe he can help fill the opening in their rotation.The Angels threatened Baltimores lead in the top of the eighth against Andrew Kittredge, who survived Mondays overhaul despite being mentioned as a potential trade piece. Nolan Schanuel scored from second when Christian Encarnacion-Strand committed a fielding error at third on Vaughn Grissoms grounder, but Moiss Ballesteros grounded out two batters later to end the threat.Tyler ONeill restored Baltimores two-run lead in the bottom half with his eighth home run of the season, a pinch-hit solo shot, before Yennier Cano closed out the win in the ninth with his second save of the season.There was every reason for the Orioles to come out flat.Cowser spoke before the game about what it was like to lose a friend in Rutschman. The two were about to enter a movie theater when the catcher received the call informing him that he had been traded.Its something where you look inward and feel as if you can be at fault as a player, Cowser said.Pete Alonso addressed the situation as soon as reporters entered the clubhouse. All right, lets rip the Band-Aid off, he said.Alonso then shifted the focus to the games still left to play, the Orioles remaining postseason hopes and the debuts of Franklin and Narvez.Jackson Holliday, meanwhile, was not quite sure what to make of a front office selling while the team sat just 2 1/2 games out of a playoff spot.Its a little weird, Holliday said. I guess thats the business of baseball. But we have to go out there and play and compete.The Orioles managed to do exactly that, despite Mondays roller coaster and the uncertainty that followed.

The defense has seemed to assert itself for now.For example, in the teams first period the goal was either to get a first down or end in a three-and-out. The three-and-outs won in both the first team and second team attempts.I think the first group forced a three-and-out, head coach Sean Payton explained today. I have to look at the film on that last play to make sure, with the twos, whether they got a first down or not. Were kind of simulating a fast start, on the field, trying to force a three-and-out, offensive trying to get your first down.The three-and-out issue was a regular annoyance last season too, so its good they are trying to get that early momentum in play over a quick punt.
