Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel slammed the NCAA on Tuesday after it suspended linebacker Arion Carter for two games for accepting a flight from an agent earlier this offseason.Heupel, more colorfully than he did in an initial statement when the suspension was first handed down, called it bulls**t.The ruling that came out from the NCAA, the two-game suspension, I truly believe is bulls**t, he said, via The Athletics David Ubben. You look at the landscape of college football, the rules from NIL, everything, I think the ruling is completely outdated.Carter explored entering the 2026 NFL Draft earlier this year, but opted to return to Tennessee for his senior season instead. But as he was looking to enter the draft, an agent paid for a plane ticket for him that was worth just more than $427. Carter suffered an injury while working out before the draft, and ended up repaying the money and separating from the agent in question.But the NCAA still deemed the initial payment of the ticket by the agent to be a Level III violation. Players and their families are not allowed to take material benefits from agents, including transportation.Tennessee reported the violation to the NCAA. Carters initial three-game suspension was reduced to two.He was upfront and honest, the fact that he paid back the $400 flight, Heupel said. Hes handled everything the right way. Very truthful and upfront about everything He embodies everything thats good about college athletics.While Carters actions are a clear violation of the NCAAs rules, the suspension is a blatant example of how murky things have become in the NIL era of college sports. Players all across the country have agents, or people acting as agents, to represent them in revenue sharing and endorsement agreements now that the practice is allowed. But because Carters flight was paid for by an NFL agent helping him prepare for professional football, and not one negotiating some sort of NIL deal, the practice is a violation.Carter missed three games last season due to a foot injury, but was still the teams third-leading tackler in 2025 with 76 total tackles and 1.5 sacks. The Volunteers went 8-5 last season, the fifth under Heupels watch, and missed the playoff.Tennessee will open the 2026 campaign against Furman on Sept. 5, and then travel to Georgia Tech the following weekend. Carter will be eligible to return for the Volunteers game against Furman on Sept. 19.

A pair of singles followed by a sac-fly RBI by Salvador Perez got the job done. Then, Michael Massey ripped a double to left-center to make it 2-0, Royals. The Twins, who struggled against Randy Dobnak the last time they faced him, continued those struggles tonight. They finally got a run in the 4th inning after loading the bases with 1-out, on an Alan Roden sac-fly. Luke Keaschall would ground out to end the threat, however. In the bottom of the 5th, the Royals, with the help of bad Twins defense, put together a 3-run inning. With 1 out, they got a single and a walk, then Bobby Witt Jr. doubled, scoring two. Witt would move to 3rd as Ryan Kreidlers throw home sailed over Ryan Jeffers head. Witt then scored on the next at bat, on a grounder to 1st, beating the throw home by Royce Lewis. That gave the Royals a 5-1 lead. It was a third rough start in a row by Joe Ryan, who exited after getting 1 out in the 6th and walking Isaac Collins. His final line was: 5.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K. His stuff just doesnt seem to be getting him enough strikeouts lately. Kody Funderburk did a good job, cleaning up the 6th inning and tossing a clean 7th as well. In the top of the 8th, finally working against the Royals bullpen, Josh Bell made some noise with a leadoff solo homer, his 14th of the year. Alas, no rally was sparked by this rally killer. Travis Adams was tasked with the 8th inning. Perez doubled, then, after a fly out, Nick Loftin walked. Then Collins grounded out to 3B. Taylor Rogers entered, the Royals countered with pinch hitter Starling Marte, who hit a 2-run double to center. Then Kyle Isbel hit an RBI single to make it an 8-2 game, and that was the final. Another disappointing game for a team that bought at the deadline.
