HOUSTON (AP) Taylor Tremmell hit a three-run homer, Jose Altuve had three hits and two RBIs, and the Houston Astros beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-2 on Tuesday night. Altuve hit an RBI single that went off the glove of Blue Jays third baseman Kazuma Okamoto and stayed in play to score Yordan Alvarez in the fifth inning, then added another hit in the seventh to center field. However, the bad news is that hes still ranked below average among all league starterscoming in at 21st overall: 21. Daniel Jones Jones made the largest year-over-year jump in average vote (+1.1) while climbing eight spots in the rankings. He set career bests in yards per attempt, passer rating and EPA per pass play before suffering a torn right Achilles tendon in December.I thought he looked broken in New York (with the Giants), an offensive coordinator said. I thought he looked functional in Indy. He looked like a 3.Jones, who ispracticing without limitations at training camp, received more Tier 2 votes (eight) than the rest of his career combined (six). Quite a few voters, including defensive coordinators who faced Indianapolis, credited Colts coach Shane Steichen for outstanding game plans.Daniel Jones is interesting, one defensive coordinator said. I think he showed that when you are not protected and you do not have all the answers given to you, it is hard to operate at this level of football.The implication was that Indy protected Jones, and Steichen gave him answers.Indy was perfect for him, another defensive coach said. The best thing he ever could have done was get with Shane. Steichen has the best mix of tempo versus non-tempo, versus huddle calls, versus Hey, listen, this ones on two, this ones on three. He tells his quarterback how to change the pace of a game, and he does it as well as anybody right now.Jonesproved he could execute that offense at a high level, although his production tapered later in the season, after defenses had more video to study. One exec thought Jones history of lower-body injuries could threaten his mobility longer term.What Steichen wanted to do scheme-wise, he was not able to do with the guys he had before Daniel Jones, said another defensive coordinator whose team faced the Colts. From an intelligence standpoint, getting them in the right plays, going through the right key progressions, that is where Daniel Jones showed he got it.The glass half full crowd will tell you that when fully healthy, in his first-year in Indianapolis with Colts head coach Shane Steichen, that Jones was in the midst of a career yearleading a historically elite league offense on a team that once sat 8-2. Unfortunately, a fractured fibula and season-ending Achilles limited his mobility regarding the former, and ultimately ended his season regarding the latter. It coincided with the Colts late season collapse, where Indianapolis would lose 7 straight games and fall out of playoff contention again. Despite missing the Colts last four games because of the Achilles, Jones was still named a Pro Bowl alternate. He completed 261 of 384 pass attempts (68.0%) for 3,101 total passing yards, 19 passing touchdowns, and 8 interceptions, as well as amassed 5 rushing touchdowns during his 13 starts this past season. The glass half empty will tell you that Jones had already shown some signs of regression before the lower leg injuries and is a system quarterback under Steichenheavily leaning on star workhorse Jonathan Taylor as the offenses true focal point to open up his passing game after-the-fact. The hope has to be that Jones regains his prior first half form, but there may be some truth that hes a system quarterback, but one could make the argument that so are other Pro Bowl quarterbacks such as Brock Purdy and Jared Goffboth of whom have had more consistent high level success under other talented offensive minds. In fact, each has even made a Super Bowl as a starting quarterback. To me, thats not the same slam that it appeared to be just a few years ago. If theres another silver lining for Colts fans, its that the other quarterbacks in the AFC South: Trevor Lawrence (16th), CJ Stroud (20th), and Cam Ward (25th) arent significantly better or in Wards case, still considered a bit worse. It doesnt appear as this division is ruled by a Patrick Mahomes type quite yet.

The Arizona Cardinals have found their new radio voice for games. The team announced that J.P Shadrick will replace Dave Pasch, who stepped down after 25 years as the play-by-play voice, taking an exclusive role at ESPN. He has called radio play-by-play for the NFL on Westwood One Sports since 2022, announcing NFL London games, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and key late-season matchups. He has also served as a national play-by-play voice on college football for Touchdown Radio Network since 2017, with studio host experience since 2016.He spent the last 14 years as the senior reporter for the Jacksonville Jaguars and was the host for the head coaches' weekly radio show for the last six. He joins analyst A.Q. Shipley in the radio booth. Shipley became the radio analyst last year after longtime analyst Ron Wolfley stepped down. Shadrick will not call the Cardinals' preseason opener on Thursday in the Hall of Fame Game against the Carolina Panthers. The game will be nationally televised on NBC, and Paul Calvisi will handle radio play-by-play with Shipley. Shadrick's first game will be next week when the Cardinals play the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday. After two decades of Pasch and Wolfley, it will certainly take Cardinals fans some time to adjust to Shadrick and Shipley. Dont believe the front office.If anyone in Cincinnati Reds Nation was wondering about manager Terry Franconas standing within the organization during a fraught season that still had the Reds in last place the day after the MLB trade deadline, look no further than the postgame interview room after the Reds win over the As in this weeks series opener.Reds owner Bob Castellini walked through the room on his way out of the clubhouse, along with two especially burly members of his posse, apparently unaware Francona was in the middle of a live media session, specifically extolling the leadership virtues of Brady Singer.Castellini gave a thumbs up as he surveyed the room, then stopped.There is a leader, he said without missing a beat, gesturing in Franconas direction. And a winner.Right here. Since camp opened, Johnson has consistently been one of the offense's biggest playmakers, making jaw-dropping catches seemingly every practice. Hauling in contested receptions, creating separation with his quickness, or extending to snag passes outside his frame, Johnson has quickly become one of the most talked-about players on the practice field. Johnson's route running has been particularly impressive. Despite not possessing the size of some of Tampa Bay's other receivers, he has consistently created separation with crisp breaks and elite change of direction ability. His chemistry with quarterback Baker Mayfield also appears to be growing by the day, as Baker has shown increasing confidence in looking Johnson's way during both team drills and red zone work. Following the departures not only of Mike Evans and Sterling Shepard, who Johnson mostly shared snaps with over the offseason, but opportunities are also available in the Buccaneers' receiver room behind Chris Godwin Jr, Emeka Egbuka, and Jalen McMillan. Johnson entered camp battling to carve out a meaningful offensive role, and through the first several practices, he has done everything possible to strengthen his case.It's still early, and training camp success doesn't always guarantee regular-season production. However, Johnson is giving the Buccaneers every reason to believe he can become more than just a developmental receiver and the "lone man out" at WR4. Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman opened fall camp with a news conference Tuesday at Notre Dame Stadium, addressing a number of topics for a team that checks in at No. 5 in the preseason coaches poll.Here are six things we heard from Freeman, safety Adon Shuler and linebacker Drayk Bowen as the Irish prepare to dive into practices this month.1. Leave No Doubt continues to be a mantra the Irish follow.Freeman instituted the motto in the winter when Notre Dame missed the College Football Playoff despite finishing with a 10-2 record. Bowen said the players understand that means they cant leave your future in the hands of others and that is driving how they work.While Leave No Doubt links back to the CFP snub, Freeman said he tells his team to stop thinking and talking about the playoffs to lock in on the moment instead.When your mind is thinking about something that isnt right in front of you, you create bad habits, Freeman said. You create complacency, and its important that every time we think about last year, 2024, the future, its a trigger to remind us to take care of what we have right in front of us, and thats this moment.With the longer offseason the Irish had while not playing in a bowl game, Freeman said the team is physically ahead of where they were in previous years bigger, stronger and more explosive. Couple that with the Irish returning all three of their coordinators, starting quarterback CJ Carr and a ton of talent on defense, and Freeman said his team is starting camp in a good spot.The foundation is higher, but weve got a tremendous amount of work and not a lot of time to get that foundation to where we need it for Sept. 6, he said.2. Freeman said the Irish have made enhancements to try to avoid early-season missteps.Freeman said he evaluated everything his program has done in the offseason as he tries to make sure his team is ready in the early season. The Irish have struggled early in seasons under Freeman, including starting 0-2 last year with losses to Miami and Texas A&M, and in 2024 losing a September game to Northern Illinois.He called it a January through August issue.How do you evaluate everything youre doing from the minute the last game ends to the minute the first game begins? Freeman said. And were not changing everything weve done, but were evaluating everything weve done, and were enhancing little things weve done in terms of how we practice, in terms of which days we practice, in terms of how much meeting time.He said hes confident in the changes he has made as the Irish look toward their Sept. 6 opener against Wisconsin at Lambeau Field.We have to challenge everything, he said. If you continue to just rent and recycle and repeat, I think youll get passed by. You have to continue to adapt to the changing times and to the different ideas that are out there.3. Freeman called quarterback CJ Carr an X factor.Carr spent Notre Dames fall camp last year in a quarterback battle with Kenny Minchey, but he comes in this season with 12 starts under his belt from 2025. After throwing for 2,741 yards and 24 touchdowns last season, he enters as a preseason Heisman Trophy candidate.Having that experience back at the most crucial position should be big for the Irish, who are confident to give him the keys to put the offense in good position, Freeman said.Hes almost like a version of a coordinator on the field, Freeman said. The coach-to-player communication cuts off at 15 seconds. And so, hes able to see a defense and anticipate what the defense is going to be and put our offense in a position to not have a negative play.Thats more important, probably, than the explosive plays. Those explosive plays happen for plenty of different reasons, but to keep our offense out of negative plays and have a quarterback that can see it because hes prepared, hes intelligent, he has experience, thats an X factor.4. Former Illinois defensive coordinator Aaron Henry brings in new ideas to the defensive staff.Henry joined Notre Dame in the offseason with the title of co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. Freeman said the defensive staff has spoken in depth about dividing up different areas of responsibility when it comes to expertise on opponents and that Henry will have a lot on his plate.Freeman said he and defensive coordinator Chris Ash must take many ideas from an experienced and knowledgeable defensive staff and merge them.How do you take as many ideas from the experts as you can? Freeman said. But ultimately you have to filter it so that your players can comprehend and play fast.The ideas, there are plenty of them. We have so much knowledge, but Coach Ash is going to do a great job of making sure that our game plan is complicated, but concise enough to make sure our players can execute it.5. Freeman and the players raved about Notre Dames new football facilities.Notre Dame just opened Shields Family Hall, a 150,000-square-foot football facility that the Irish said in a release includes an advanced training room; a stand-alone sports medicine facility; an equipment facility with body scanning and fabrication technology; a new and expanded locker room; meeting rooms, including a two-level, all-team auditorium and an augmented reality walkthrough room; media innovation spaces, including recording studios and photo studios; academic support spaces and a new player nutrition area.Freeman called the new facilities, which reportedly cost $100 million, unbelievable.I know at some point, it will get old, but every time I walk in there, Im in awe, he said. Its unbelievable. And credit to the people that invested money and time to get our players that place they deserve.Shuler called it a huge upgrade and said the investment is humbling.I keep joking around with (Drayk Bowen), like, we need a map, Shuler said. Thats how big the building is.Bowen said he is excited about the food but also thinks the recovery room will be beneficial.As Ive gotten older, Ive realized how much more wear and tear you get on the body throughout the long season, Bowen said. So for me, the biggest thing is probably going to be the recovery room of just all the things that they have now that we can use that can help you get back to 100 percent a lot sooner.6. Notre Dame gave injury updates for players.The Irish listed six players as available for modified activity as of Aug. 4: wide receivers Elijah Burress (right hamstring strain), Quincy Porter (left knee patella surgery) and Brayden Robinson (right ACL surgery), offensive lineman Ashton Craig (left ACL surgery), linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa (left ACL surgery), and safety Nick Reddish (right shoulder labrum surgery).Five players are currently out: defensive linemen Christopher Burgess Jr. (left tibia stress fracture surgery) and Tiki Hola (right ACL surgery), offensive linemen Charles Jagusah (left humerus fracture surgery) and Peter Jones (right shoulder pectoral strain), and linebacker Koo Kia (left shoulder labrum surgery).
