Rushing is on the injured list due to what was described as right arm irritation, but it is, in fact, a tear in his shoulder. So today were looking at two new catchers.Still, Rushing was hitting well, with a .253 batting average and 12 home runs, which was on a steady climb after a slump period. He was starting to grow into his role as the No. 1 catcher after taking some lessons from the season, including his public spat with Shohei Ohtani. However, things will go on ice for Rushing, who can still have an impact as a pinch hitter if given the chance to get back into a rhythm. His work behind the plate remains a big question, and it will be even more important if Will Smith suffers any kind of setback.

The Washington Commanders opened Day 5 of training camp with some surprising news. Veteran cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon retired and was placed on the reserve/retired list. In a corresponding move, the Commanders signed cornerback Fabian Moreau. Moreau is a familiar name to Washington fans, having spent his first four NFL seasons with the Redskins/Football Team after being drafted in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of UCLA. Like Witherspoon, also a fellow 2017 third-round pick, Moreau is entering his 10th NFL season in 2026. Moreau was on the field for the Commanders. What happened in practice? Well, it was another good day for quarterback Jayden Daniels. The third-year quarterback continues to look more comfortable with each passing day. Peralta gave up nine hits and seven runs in less than four innings in their 9-7 win in extra innings over the Colorado Rockies.Not great.The Mets gave up several prospects to acquire Peralta from the Milwaukee Brewers this past offseason. He was coming off his best campaign in the league, too, with a 2.70 ERA while in Wisconsin. But Peralta stumbled badly with the Mets, and posted a 4.99 ERA in 22 starts with the organization which marked his worst performance since 2019 and took a step back in nearly every statistic. Even after this final start, knowing that he was likely to be dealt, the 30-year-old felt like he failed.I know that, so far, Ive let them down, he said last month. I havent done what Im supposed to do.So then, ahead of the deadline, the Mets called it. They sent Peralta to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for several prospects on Sunday. Peralta will hit free agency this winter, so his time with the Rays may end up being short.But when the Rays missed out on the Tarik Skubal sweepstakes Skubal instead was traded to the Dodgers they attempted to land the next best thing. In theory, that was Peralta. But he looked like anything but that on Tuesday.The Rays jumped up 5-1 in the third inning, thanks in part to a grand slam from Liam Hicks, and looked like they were well on their way to a big win. They are still in last in the NL West race, and are almost certainly out of the playoff hunt. The Rays, who are leading the AL East, are now 67-46.While Peralta has more than proven himself as a reliable starter throughout his career, his struggles in New York have clearly followed him down to Florida. Whether hes able to turn things around by the time the postseason hits and actually produce for the Rays remains to be seen.

Davis Martin floundered through five innings while Patrick Sandoval worked smoothly through the South Siders despite struggling with his control, earning the W for the Red Sox.Tonight was the second time this season that Martin has allowed nine runs; the other was June 16, while visiting the Yankees, when things really started to go downhill. There are definitely some red flags to consider as we head into crunch time in a tight division race, since this was the third outing in a row where he surrendered four or more runs. Davis owned a 3.62 ERA just a few hours ago, but Tuesdays implosion has inflated it to 4.13 on the season. In his last seven starts (34 1/3 innings), he owns a rough 6.55 ERA with a 1.60 WHIP, and hes been striking guys out at a much lower rate with just 20 Ks in this time span.There may have been at least one explanation for Tuesdays disaster. After the game, manager Will Venable said Davis Martin was tipping his pitches, an issue catcher Kyle Teel identified during the game and brought to the coaching staffs attention. That doesnt erase Martins recent struggles, but it does provide some context for why Bostons hitters looked so comfortable from the opening inning.Venable said there were tipping issues with Martin tonight. Martin confirmed and said it was Kyle Teel who identified the issue in game. Once Teel started guessing along, he brought it to everyones attention. @whitesox Connor McKnight (@C1McKnight) August 5, 2026Martins recent inconsistency is still worth monitoring. While tipping pitches may have contributed to Tuesdays outing, his results over the past several starts have been uneven. His recent inconsistencies were one of the main reasons I was hoping Chris Getz would trade for another starting pitcher before Mondays deadline, especially when everyone not named Sean Burke is a wild card when they start. Before the All-Star break through June, really Davis looked like he was approaching ace status, but he has been regressing lately, and its hard to imagine how he would perform in a playoff game at this moment in time. Im still optimistic, and Ive not given up on him by any means, but if we are being realistic, theres quite a bit of uncertainty around his performance for the remainder of the season.Right off the bat, Nick Sogard rattled Martin with a leadoff double off the Green Monster, then hit Ceddanne Rafaela square in the back on a curveball that got away to put two runners on. Davis navigated an out on a deep fly that advanced the runners, but back-to-back base hits from Willson Contreras and Masataka Yoshida scored the first run for the Red Sox, 1-0, and then loaded the bases with just one out. Naturally, Caleb Durbin demolished the second pitch he saw for a grand slam over the Green Monster in left, increasing the Boston lead to five, 5-0.The way Boston has played over the last month needs to be studied for generations, because whatever chokehold they currently have on the baseball gods seems to be enough to overpower both the Pope AND a wizard. What I mean by that is Jarren Duran blasted a solo shot for the Red Sox to go back-to-back, tallying six earned for Davis in just the first inning, 6-0. Ouch.It took 26 pitches for Martin to get out of the first, but he was fairly efficient through the next four frames, using just eight pitches in the third, ranging up to 15 in the other three. Davis did eventually work a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth, and the South Siders finally scored a run in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Miguel Vargas, 6-1. Miguels fly out seemed like it was sailing over the Monster before it was caught against it.But of course, the Good Guys did not carry that momentum through their at-bats in the fifth inning: Randal Grichuk grounded into a double play to end the scoring threat, and Davis conceded his third home run of the game in the bottom of the fifth to hand the run right back and increase the Boston lead back to six, 7-1.Still, the White Sox didnt quit, making Patrick Sandoval work in some tough at-bats while drawing four free passes. Consecutive walks in the sixth put runners on for the Good Guys, but they managed only one run on Braden Montgomerys RBI ground out. The Chicago bats went just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left seven on base, so they could have walked several more times and probably still wouldnt have been able to catch up without some clutch hits.Earning his first official win of the season, Sandoval had a much better day on the mound and only gave up the two runs on six hits while striking out five. The Boston bullpen didnt seem to have a problem either, as the South Siders didnt get another hit after five, and Brayan Bello was set up nicely for a three-inning save, his first of the season.On the other hand, Chicago went to righthander Erick Fedde out of the bullpen, who was tasked with essentially eating innings and getting through this disastrous game. Still, he, too, gave up five runs (four earned) on five hits, and that was on top of two more runs attributed to Martin. Not that the bats were promising enough to complete the five-run comeback, but the Red Sox tallied a half-dozen between the two pitchers in the sixth to extend the lead to 13-2.It almost felt like things were going to settle down so we could just end the suffering, and I could stop watching, but Fedde went out with a bang, and Abreu blasted his second bomb of the game on a solo shot to pour salt in Chicagos gaping wound, 14-2. Bello was able to retire the Sox in order during their final at-bats, and the South Siders need to reset after that wimpy performance in the series opener.The only good news of the night is that both the Cleveland Guardians and Minnesota Twins lost Tuesday, leaving the White Sox to reflect on that horrific game while still holding a three-game division lead. Bayern Munich pulled out a 2-1 victory over Jeju SK with a ho-hum effort in South Korea. Surely, the Bavarians would have wanted (or maybe expected) more, but the travel schedule, marketing duties, and overall availability in a foreign land often make these games a crapshoot. For the Bavarians, that proved to be the case. It did not take long for Bayern Munich to get going. Felipe Chvez showed great persistence in sticking with a play to eventually lead to a perfectly placed goal on a left-footed shot from decent distance. Chvez, who fought through some traffic for the goal, is helping himself a lot this preseason and could land himself a good loan assignment if he can continue put together solid performances. Jeju SK was not about to go down without a fight, though. Matheus Aiss individual brilliance with a rainbow flick to beat Kim Min-jae led to him slotting a perfect pass to Chang-min Lee in the 15th minute to make it 1-1. Ais did not have to do Kim dirty like that in South Korea. Absolutely zero chill with that move (which was completely awesome).The young and inexperienced lineup for Bayern Munich had its hands full at times with Jeju SK.Bayern Munichs Filip Pavi took a shot to the grill and was bloodied in the first half. Tom Bischof did well again, but it would have been great to see him a little more involved in the attack.Early on, Bastian Assomo, who probably should have had a goal in the 36th minute, had a lot of trouble getting into the game. The youngster was not able to settle in and get comfortable. With Assomo, Chvez, Guido Della Rovere, and Bara Sapoko Ndiaye leading the attack, it was always going to be a little discombobulated until they settle in together. Kim left the match after 35 minutes and man, did he look like he played a full game. The big defender was drenched with sweat.Assomo would get that elusive goal with a nice finish in the 41st minute after a nice, little pass from midfielder Joo Palhinha. Sometimes, you forget the perils and absolutely wildness of preseason footballand other times, games like this are there to remind you. Palhinha almost added a goal in the 44th minute, but sent his curling attempt just wide. Jonas Urbig had a really nice save in the 56th minute. Interestingly, Manuel Neuer did not dress for the match as he was given a day off to rest. Konrad Laimer brought some real intensity and energy into the match, but was not all that sharp otherwise (as expected). Maycon Cardozo brought that same type of energy as well. It is crazy that Bayern Munich did not score in the second half give the pressure it was creating on the Jeju SK backline.Of the rest of the substitute group, Joshua Kimmich was solid and helped ease the game into submission. Overall, it was a solid, yet unspectacular showing. No one was horrible (yeah!), but no one absolutely took over, either. It looked like a preseason game. Even with that, young players got a chance to show off their skill and veterans got a chance to shake off some rust. Why cant he go the way of Lennart Karl and carve a place out in the first-team squad like Karl? Okay, Lennart may be younger than him, but he can see an opportunity to follow the pathway.The best case scenario for the youngster is that he puts in the hard work, gets minutes, and melds into all of the talent around him.
