SPORTS.YAHOO.COMManny Machado has four RBIs, Padres beat D-backs 9-4 to gain ground in NL wild card racePHOENIX (AP) Manny Machado had three hits and four RBIs, Randy Vsquez threw six scoreless innings and the San Diego Padres jumped out to a big early lead in a 9-4 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night. The Padres won for the ninth time in 11 games, moving one game behind the D-backs for the third and final National League wild-card playoff spot.Jackson Merrill had three hits and two RBIs, while Jake Cronenworth also had a three-hit night. Vsquez (7-6) gave up just two hits and walked one while striking out one. The Padres jumped all over All-Star Eduardo Rodrguez in the first inning with leadoff hitter Fernando Tatis Jr. starting the game with a double to left. Machado followed with an RBI double before Merrill and Xander Bogaerts added run-scoring singles for a 3-0 lead.San Diego extended its advantage to 6-0 in the second, partly because of Arizona's sloppy defense. Jase Brown reached on a bunt single when there appeared to be confusion on who was covering first base and Ketel Marte's error on a grounder led to a pair of unearned runs.Rodrguez (10-4) gave up a season-high seven runs on 11 hits over 5 2/3 innings, though only five of those runs were earned. The left-hander was coming off one of his best outings of the season, when he pitched eight innings in a 3-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.Arizona's Nolan Arenado and James McCann hit two-run homers in the seventh off Germn Mrquez to cut the deficit to 8-4. Geraldo Perdomo added two hits.Up nextDiamondbacks LHP Mitch Bratt (0-1, 5.23 ERA) will start on Wednesday against RHP Casey Mize (4-6, 2.70), who is making his San Diego debut.___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb0 Comments 0 Shares 45 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPadres hang 6 runs early, hold D-backs at arms reach rest of the way in winSan Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado scores ahead of the tag by Arizona Diamondbacks catcher James McCann (not pictured) in the first inning at Chase Field. The big names for the San Diego Padres ambushed the Arizona Diamondbacks early, plating three runs in both the first and second innings, then powered through a late hiccup with a 9-4 win on Tuesday at Chase Field.Manny Machado had a four-RBI night as he matched his season high as one of three Padres (59-55) with three hits, while Randy Vsquez had one of his strongest starts of the season. Despite allowing two or fewer runs in eight of his last nine starts, Diamondbacks (60-54) All-Star Eduardo Rodriguez got roughed up early.San Diego's big bats combined for nine hits and five runs scored, as Jackson Merrill matched Machado with a trio of knocks while adding a pair of RBI. Merrill also joined Fernando Tatis Jr. and Luis Rengifo in coming across home to score twice as the Brown and Gold put up 16 hits the Padres have notched all three of their 16 or more hit efforts since July 19.It was backed up by Vsquez following up his 4 2/3 inning relief appearance on July 30 by pitching six complete for the sixth time and not surrendering a run for the third time when getting the nod. Geraldo Perdomo was the only D-back to touch him, getting singles in the first and fourth.Tatis got to offense going right out of the gate with a lead off rocket-liner double down the third base line, then came home to score on Machados one-out double. Then San Diego tacked on two more with two down, as Merrill singled to right and Machado beat out Corbin Carrolls throw to the plate. It allowed Merrill to take second, which was key when Xander Bogaerts cracked it back up the middle for an early 3-0 lead. The barrage continued in the second as Jake Cronenworth and Jase Bowen singled, then Cronenworth was called out on a challenge trying to advance to third on a Tatis chopper that directionOn the next pitch after the review Luis Rengifo hit a hot shot to Ketel Marte that the second baseman boxed, loading the bases on the error. Machado followed up by inside-outing a fastball down the right field line for a two-RBI single, then Merrill notched his second two-out RBI of the game with a single through the right side.Machado added his fourth RBI in the sixth when Luis Rengifo bunted for a two-out single that chased Rodriguez, then reliever Ryan Thompson allowed a bounding ball RBI singled back up the middle. An inning later Freddy Fermin hit an RBI double to score Merrill, but the Padres would get just one and leave the bases loaded.Sung-Mun Song replaced Bogaerts in the seventh inning after the shortstop had drawn a walk against Thompson where he fouled a pitch off his foot. After the D-backs pushed across four in the seventh against Germn Mrquez on a pair of two-run home runs to Nolan Arrenado and James McCann, San Diego pushed across another in the ninth. A Song walk and Fermin single set up Cronenworth for an RBI single, his third hit of the night.Vsquezs final line was six innings pitched with two hits and no runs allowed while striking out one and walking one to earn his seventh win.Mrquez conceded all four of the Arizona runs on four hits, a walk and a strikeout, then Bradgley Rodriguez settled things down with a one-two-three eighth. Griffin Canning closed it out with a clear ninth.Prior to the game the Padres made a pair of moves to make room for recent trade deadline acquisitions on their 26-man roster. Casey Mize (who will wear No. 32) and Gage Workman (who will wear No. 99) were officially added, with JP Sears and Rodolfo Durn optioned to Triple-A El Paso. The six-year veteran righty Mize (4-6, 2.70 ERA) will make his Padres debut in Wednesdays game against left-hander Mitch Bratt (0-1, 5.36 ERA) for the Diamondbacks. In his seven starts since returning from a 15-Day IL stint with Detroit, Mize averaged 5 2/3 innings per appearance, with a 3.32 ERA and 36-7 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Bratt has spent the majority of the season with Triple-A Reno, but has made five starts for Arizona and has been with the D-Backs since being recalled on July 12.First pitch from Chase Field is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. PT.This story will be updated.0 Comments 0 Shares 56 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMThe Rockies cant hold off the Rays late-inning comeback, lose 9-7Aug 4, 2026; Denver, Colorado, USA; Tampa Bay Rays catcher Liam Hicks (34) celebrates his grand slam with third baseman Junior Caminero (13) in the third inning against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. Mandatory Credit: Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters ConnectThis was Tampa Bay Rays starter Freddy Peraltas third time to face the Rockies this season following two starts with his previous team, the New York Mets. He came into the game with a 3-0 record at Coors in addition to a 1.23 ERA.But it didnt seem like it would matter against a persistent Colorado Rockies club that took an early lead. However, the Rockies offense stalled after the fourth inning, and the Rays got back in the game ultimately winning 9-7 in extra innings. The offense got an early start and then stoppedThe Rockies got off to a quick start on the offensive side in their third time facing Peralta this season. (They faced him twice when he was with the New York Mets.)Jake McCarthy kicked things off with a lead-off single, and Cole Carrigg followed his example with another single that moved McCarthy to third. Mickey Moniak then hit into a double play, but it was enough to score McCarthy and give the Rockies a 1-0 when the first inning had concluded. The Rays did not have a baserunner until the third inning when Cedric Mullins hit a single. After that, Gabriel Hughes walked Richie Palancios, and Taylor Walls executed a successful bunt single, loading the bases with no outs. He struck out Yandy Daz before issuing a walk to Jonathan Aranda, and the score was tied with the Rockies desperate for a double play with Junior Caminero at the plate. Hughes struck him out with a four-seam fastball The Rockies just needed one more out to minimize the damage. It didnt happen. Newly acquired catcher Liam Hicks hit a grand slam home run, the first of his career, to give the Rays a 5-1 lead.View LinkHughes came back to get a groundout and end the inning. Jordan Beck made his presence felt in the Rockies half of the third when he led off with a triple, his second of this season. Coming off a four-hit night, Ezequiel Tovar picked up where he left off. After a 10-pitch at-bat, he singled to bring home Beck and make the score 5-2 Rays. After that, McCarthy singled giving the Rockies runners at first and second. The 2026 Colorado Rockies are nothing if not persistent, and such was the case in the third inning. Moniak stepped to the plate and belted a three-run, 380-ft homer his 19th of the season tying the game and celebrating his two-year contract extension.View LinkHughes got back in track with a one-two-three fourth. And then the Rockies decided they wanted some tacos.Kyle Karros led off with a walk, and Willi Castro followed that with a homer his 13th and a career high.View LinkWith that, the score was 7-5 Rockies as Rockies president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta visited the broadcast booth. After that, Peralta got two quick outs before allowing McCarthy to hit a single, and that was it for him. Although hes had a history or success at Coors Field, that was not the case tonight. His final line was 3.2 IP, allowing seven runs (all earned) on nine hits. He walked one, struck out three, and allowed two home runs on 71 pitches.Hughes was terrific in the fifth inning, striking out all three batters he faced and kicking the sixth off with a fourth K. However, when he allowed Hicks a double, Warren Schaeffer went to the bullpen for LHP Brennan Bernardino.Although Bernardino allowed a single, no runs scored, and the Rockies finished the sixth inning with their 7-5 lead. The Rockies went quietly in their part of the sixth, and recently recalled Parker Mushinski came in for the seventh, a rare stretch when the Rockies were able to pitch back-to-back lefties. Although he had some traffic, the Rays did not score. That said, the Rays bullpen was successful in quieting the Rockies offense, which did not have a base runner after a McCarthy single in the fourth until the eighth inning when TJ Rumfield hit a double. However the Rockies failed to score.Schaeffer haded the ball to Juan Mejia in the eighth, who allowed two hits but no runs.Jordan Romano entered to close, and things went sideways. He struck out Ben Williamson before surrendering a walk to Walls, who then stole second, and a single to Daz, who followed suit, grabbing second as well. A base hit from Aranda tied the game with one out and Caminero at the plate.View LinkRomano struck out Caminero with the Rockies opting to intentionally walk Hicks to get to old friend Ryan Vilade. A 5-3 ground ball to Karros ended the Rays half of the inning with a blown Romano save and a tie game. The bottom of the ninth would bring up Castro, Beck, and Tovar. After Castro failed to get on base, Rays manager Kevin Cash went to Kevin Kelly while Troy Johnston entered for the Rockies to pinch hit.Although Johnston was a quick line out, Tovar stayed hot and hit a double, which brought McCarthy to the plate 3-for-4 so far on the night. But he was unable to get on base, and the game went to extras.Warren Schaeffer went with Jimmy Herget for the 10th inning. With Vilade as the ghost runner, the Rockies got a 4-3 out that moved the runner to third. He struck out Jonny DeLuca and Williams to end the inning without allowing a run. View LinkThe stage was set for a Rockies walk-off with McCarthy the ghost runner. The Rays begin by walking Carrigg, which brought Tyler Freeman to the plate. He executed a successful bunt that advanced the runner and brought up Hunter Goodman. That led to a pitching change for the Rays who went to LHP Garrett Cleavinger. Goodman flew out to right, but it wasnt enough to bring McCarthy home. With two outs, everything came down to Rumfield. He flew out to left, and the game went to the 11th inning with recently acquired Nick Frasso making his MLB debut. It wasnt the start he wanted as a wild pitch scored ghost runner Williamson from third, and the Rays took a 8-7 lead with one out. Following that, Daz hit a double. He advanced to third on a fly ball, and a Caminero single gave the Rays a 9-7 lead. Hicks flew out to left to end the inning.Cash turned to his closer, Bryan Baker and a wicked elevated changeup, for the Rays half of the 11th while the Rockies ghost runner Rumfield started at second. Karros was unable to advance the runner; Castro struck out; and Johnston struck out.Game over. In total, the Rockies had seven runs on 11 hits. They walked once and struck out six times. They got the job done in a battle, Schaeffer said of the Rays bullpen. It was a great baseball battle back-and-forth.Walks came back to haunt Gabriel Hughes but then he called Ghost BustersIf anything has defined Gabriel Hughes time with the Rockies, its been his ability to get ahead in counts and avoid walks. That did not happen for him in the third inning, when he surrendered two walks and a grand slam, but he kept his composure for the rest of his outing.View LinkHe relied primarily on his four-seamer (44%) followed by his curveball (23%) and changeup (14%). Hughes final line was 5.1 IP with five runs (earned) on four hits. He walked two, struck out seven, and allowed one home run on 71 pitches. He continues his quest to notch his first MLB win. Just one rough inning with a couple of walk mixed in there, Schaeffer said. I thought Gabe gave us a chance to win.The bullpen picked up where Hughes left off until it didntAlthough Bernardino had some traffic, his streaks across 23 games of not allowing an earned run continues. He went 0.2 IP, allowing one hit but no walks, strikeouts, or runs. Mushinskis Rockies debut was not without a few hiccups, but no harm, no foul. His final line was 1.0 IP with one hit and one walk. Mejias eighth inning was mostly uneventful: 1.0 IP with two hits and no runs. Then it all came down to closer Jordan Romano, who blew the save by allowing two walks (one intentional), two runs, and two hits while notching two strikeouts. Jimmy Herget pitched a lovely scoreless 10th inning that saw him striking out two and setting up the Rockies for the walk-off.Obiovusly its big for Jim to get that inning in, Schaeffer said. Thats the Jimmy we know, and it was good to see that.As for Nick Frassos MLB debut, it would not without its problems, but ultimately, he allowed two runs and did not strike out or walk any batter. He also earned the loss.Up nextJoin us tomorrow for Game 3 when Nick Martinez will face Tomoyuki Sugano ( ) as the Rockies look to avoid the sweep. First pitch is at 1:10.See you then. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSimone Fontecchio admits he passed up more lucrative offers to stay with the Miami HeatSimone Fontecchio admits he passed up more lucrative offers to stay with the Miami Heat originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. With the Miami Heat desperate for perimeter shooting, they got a big-time steal with how they re-signed Simone Fontecchio. On the current roster, he is their best three-point shooter. In the 70 games he played in the 2025-26 season, he shot 37.5% on his 4.7 attempts per game. Now that he will be playing alongside Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo, he will have more freedom to move off the ball and get more open shots. Considering he is one of the few forwards who can be relied upon to hit shots, the Heat could have struck gold with the veteran minimum deal they got for Fontecchio.Simone Fontecchio apparently passed up opportunities to stay with the HeatThe modern NBA team needs shooters around their best players to maximize the offense. In this current Heat offense, it is mostly about driving into the paint and finishing at the rim. The two primary options are Adebayo and Antetokounmpo, who are both known to score in the paint or at least from the mid-range area.It seems they are well aware of the narrative surrounding their perimeter shooting, which is why they have had a lot of workouts in the past few weeks with their shooting. However, they do have some solutions at home, including Fontecchio, who could be a crucial player moving forward.MORE:Bam Adebayo details the reasons why he is not worried about the Heat's apparent shooting strugglesFontecchio himself understood this, which is why he stayed with the Heat for at least one more year. Since he grew up in Italy and has played most of his career in Europe, he likely received offers to return to his home continent. However, Fontecchio has chosen not to pass up playing for a good NBA team."My priority was to continue my NBA career. Pat Riley told me he wanted me to stay, and coach Erik Spoelstra made it clear that he really wanted to keep me. I've always felt their trust, even when I fell out of the rotation," Fontecchio said about his decision to stay with the Heat.As the 2026-27 season gets closer, more people will recognize that Fontecchio could play a bigger role than most expect. He is their sharpshooter now, and head coach Erik Spoelstra will want to maximize his talents as they compete in the Eastern Conference.More NBA news:Bam Adebayo leaves out LeBron James from his all-time list and gives the nod to Kevin DurantJosh Smith believes Giannis Antetokounmpo has a wonky fit with the HeatLeBron James only considered the 76ers after the Jaylen Brown tradeBam Adebayo gives his reaction to LeBron James choosing the 76ers over the HeatBobby Portis believes the Heat have the best frontcourt in the NBA0 Comments 0 Shares 88 Views 0 Reviews
