'A lot to do to get back challenging at the top' - fans on squad depth
[BBC][BBC]We asked for your views on Liverpool's squad depth and which areas need reinforcing in this transfer window. We also asked whether there are any players you would let go to comply with the Premier League's home grown rules. Here are some of your comments:Andy: Clearly, Barcola would be a good addition but the glaringly obvious recruitment gaps are centre back (oh how we all wish that were Guehi) and a number six to free up Gravenberch. With Conor Bradley out, getting Trent Alexander-Arnold back would be nice, but I can't see it. A solid number six and a solid centre-back are the must-haves; Barcola would be the icing on the cake.Kev: How the lack of balance in the squad has been allowed is quite staggering. We are short in defence compared to last season and half of those who remain will miss periods of the season through injury based on their track record. Offensively, we are miles away from a couple of seasons ago....a lot to do in my opinion to get back challenging at the top.Fraser: I would sign Barcola and get home grown defenders, ideally a centre-back and right-back or a hybrid player in those roles. For selling, I would sell Chiesa and Mac Allister to make room for new players. Even though losing Chiesa would weaken our attack, he is barely fit and doesn't really fit in the Premier League. I would not sell Gakpo, sure he was frustrating last season but his availability is very good and he can score at least.Shaun: The problem is, I believe, we're still reeling from losing the likes of Trent, Diaz, even Nunez; never mind the players we've lost this season: Robertson, Salah We spent a lot of money but it never felt like we replaced those players. Now it's even worse. We've got some good players but the squad feels light and it's hard to imagine us challenging with the squad we have.John: The biggest problem is with the wing backs. The only one capable is Bradley. Frimpong and Kerkez don't know what they should be doing and Tsimikas just isn't good enough. Another general defender is critical. To spend big money on Barcola just exacerbates the problem as we are using money which should be spent on the defence. Maybe move Frimpong to right wing.Ian: With the squad we've got at the moment we will struggle. We need a right back, a centre back, a number six and a winger at the very least. A couple of class midfielders wouldn't go amiss either because the midfield was poor last season. Whether FSG will fund the requirements is a cause for concern because they are desperately needed.Dave: Looking so frail at left back and Tsimikas is top of the list for non-home-grown players to be invited to explore career options. Bring in some young keen home talent and still acknowledge opponents will attack down that flank.

Ruben Dias stance on Real Madrid transfer clarified amid Manchester City future doubts
Ruben Dias stance on Real Madrid transfer clarified amid Manchester City future doubtsDias is preparing for another Man City season despite interest from Real MadridPortuguese defender has been linked with the Santiago Bernabeu this summerFormer Benfica man has been a cornerstone of Man Citys defence since joining for 62M in 2020Ruben Dias is set to stay at Manchester City and is preparing for another season at the Etihad Stadium, despite having attracted interest from Real Madrid this summer, as per a new report. The 29-year-old has been one of the most consistent and decorated defenders in the Premier League since arriving from Benfica in September 2020, winning four league titles, the Champions League and multiple domestic cups across six seasons that have cemented his standing as one of the finest centre-backs of his generation.Real Madrids interest in Dias had been one of the more prominent storylines of the summer window, with the Spanish clubs new manager Jose Mourinho understood to have been an admirer of the Portugal international as he looked to reshape a defensive unit that had undergone significant changes at the Santiago Bernabeu this summer.Manchester City face Ruben Dias exit threat as Jose Mourinho spearheads Real Madrid interestDespite that interest, Dias has not sought a move and appears settled in his decision to remain in Manchester for the coming season, giving Enzo Maresca a significant boost as the new manager builds his defensive plans around one of the Etihad Stadiums most influential senior presences.Dias featured for Portugal at the FIFA World Cup in North America this summer, facing club teammateJosko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic when La Seleo met Croatia in the Round of 32, before eventually exiting the tournament in the quarter-finals.Report: Dias stays as City confirm defensive stabilityAccording to Sam Lee of The Athletic, while Dias has been of interest to Real Madrid this summer, the centre-back is now preparing for another season at Manchester City. The update effectively closes the chapter on a saga that had generated significant attention in recent weeks, removing one of the more high-profile potential departures from the list of outstanding personnel questions Maresca must resolve before the new season begins.Diass contract at the Etihad Stadium runs until 2027, leaving the club in a strong negotiating position had they ever wished to sell but with Vitor Reis still developing and Marc Guehi only recently arrived in the defensive unit, retaining Diass experience and leadership for at least one more season was always the most sensible course for a club in the early stages of a transition under new management. His decision to stay will be welcomed by director of football Hugo Viana, who has consistently prioritised continuity alongside new investment throughout his first summer in charge and for Maresca, who worked alongside Dias during the treble season of 2022-23, it is the confirmation that one of his most trusted defensive leaders will be available to him when the Premier League campaign begins later this month.

Aleksandar Pavlovi says first touch can set the tone at Bayern Munich
dpatop - 01 July 2026, Bavaria, Munich: Soccer, 2026 World Cup, national team, Germany; following Germany's elimination in the round of 32 against Paraguay, Aleksandar Pavlovic, a player on the national soccer team, arrives at Munich Airport. Photo: Peter Kneffel/dpa (Photo by Peter Kneffel/picture alliance via Getty Images)Confidence is one of the most valuable qualities a midfielder can possess, especially at a club like Bayern Munich, where every touch is scrutinized and every match carries enormous expectations. Bayern Munich midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovi recently explained the mindset that allows him to thrive under that pressure.A good start always gives you confidence. But even if the first touches dont come off, it doesnt put me off my stride. I continue to play unperturbed and demand the ball just as I did before. No matter whos in front of me, how tight things are on the pitch or how much pressure there is: I have no fear. Ive had this ability since I was a child and its getting stronger every year. I think that helps me enormously in my game. Its a good gift, Pavlovi told Bayern Munich club magazine Sbener 51 (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). There is a subtle but important distinction in Pavlovis words. His confidence is not dependent on everything going perfectly. Of course, a strong start helps any player settle into a match, but what separates top midfielders from the rest is their willingness to keep asking for the ball even after making a mistake. That mentality is essential in Bayern Munichs system. Midfielders are constantly receiving possession in crowded areas, often with little time to think and opponents closing in from every direction. The easiest response after a misplaced pass is to hide. Pavlovis instinct is the exact opposite he wants the ball again. His comment about having no fear may be the most revealing. Fearlessness is not about never making mistakes; it is about refusing to let those mistakes dictate the next decision. That confidence allows him to play progressively, trust his instincts, and maintain composure regardless of the opponent or the occasion. For a young player still establishing himself at one of Europes biggest clubs, that mentality could prove just as valuable as his technical ability. Talent can earn opportunities, but confidence, resilience, and the courage to keep demanding the ball are often what transform promising prospects into long-term stars.Pavlovi will undoubtedly be looking to rebound from a very disappointing World Cup show, but if he continues to pair that mindset with his obvious ability, Bayern Munich may have another midfield cornerstone for years to come.Join the conversation!Sign up for a user accountand get:New, improved notifications system!Fewer adsCreatecommunity postsComment on articles, community postsRec comments, community posts
