Vikings Jordan Mason Turning Heads Over Aaron Jones Ahead of 2026 NFL Season
Jordan Mason and Aaron Jones have been duking it out in training camp over the starting running back position ahead of the Minnesota Vikings 2026 campaign. However, it appears that one of them has the significant edge this time around.Mason is gearing up for the fifth season of his NFL career, his second with the Vikings. He has been primarily a backup rusher so far, recently playing behind Jones throughout the 2025 campaign. With Jones boasting more experience and trust in the offense, it made sense for Mason to step in whenever the team needed him for certain situations. However, it appears that both running backs places in the depth chart might change significantly going into 2026.Reporters of the Purple Daily Podcast has been present at the Vikings training camp sessions. They focused on the running back room, noting how much better Mason has gotten while thinking he is on pace for a breakout season.Minnesota Vikings running back Jordan Mason has been a standout at training camp and looks poised for a big 2026 season. According to the Purple Daily Podcast, Mason looks better than Jones, and the way [Mason] is moving around, the way that he runs. I really like Jordan Mason as a fit in the new run scheme that the Vikings have with their new wide zone concepts, reporter Nathan Harvey wrote on Rotoballer. Last season, Mason totaled 758 rushing yards and six touchdowns in 16 games, averaging 4.8 yards per carry, while Jones averaged 4.2 yards per carry. While Mason doesnt offer much in the passing game, any improvement there could boost his stock, especially if the team improves on their abysmal showing in 2025. Ranked RB37 in RotoBallers positional rankings, Mason is a great value that could easily top his current price this season. What Lies Ahead for Jordan Mason and VikingsDec 14, 2025; Arlington, Texas, USA; Minnesota Vikings running back Jordan Mason (27) runs during the second half against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Raymond Carlin III-Imagn Images Credit: IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect (Reuters)The Vikings are due for a promising campaign should their quarterback play improve. Not only that, but they might also unlock another dimension of their offense if Jordan Mason does emerge as the leading rusher for the 2026 campaign.Mason played in 16 games that included five starts for the backup running back. In those games, he racked up 159 carries for 758 yards and six touchdowns. In comparison, Aaron Jones started in 12 games as he recorded 132 rushes for 548 yards and two touchdowns. The Vikings will hope to improve upon their 9-8 record from the previous season. They also intend to return to the playoffs after a one-year absence and end their three-year NFC North title drought.Minnesota sees its campaign get underway at home, hosting the Chicago Bears. That matchup will commence on Sept. 13 at 4:25 p.m. ET.Enjoy free coverage of the top news & trending stories with The Big Lead Newsletter

Broncos' 2nd-year tight end at risk of falling way behind in TE battle
Caleb Lohner's facing an increasingly difficult battle to make the Denver Broncos' 53-man roster this summer. Even before he underwent a "routine" lower-body clean-up procedure in early June, Lohner was firmly on the team's roster bubble. Since then, Lohner (knee) hasn't been practicing at training camp, missing valuable reps as other tight ends compete for roster spots. Last week, Denver coach Sean Payton was asked if he's concerned about Lohner missing so much time. I always get a little concerned, especially if its a younger player," Payton said. "Even going through the draft or signing free agents, when we hear they might miss a portion of, you just realistically know thats a challenge then. So the sooner the better. Now I do know this, I do know what I was seeing before his injury and the work hes put in. Its interesting, when you draft someone like that, you really dont know the temperament because you havent seen enough film, and he in his first year showed us that.Lohner, abasketball player-turned-tight endout of Utah, was picked by Denver in the seventh round of last year's NFL draft. Payton praised the tight end's progress this spring, but Lohner is now falling behind. Payton said on Aug. 3 that he doesn't know how long Lohner might be sidelined. In the meantime, Nate Adkins, Justin Joly, Dallen Bentley and Lucas Krull are getting valuable reps in the tight end rotation behind veterans Evan Engram and Adam Trautman. If he's going to have a real chance of making the active roster, Lohner will need to get back on the field sooner rather than later. TAMPA, FLORIDA - MARCH 20: Lejuan Watts #3 of the Texas Tech Red Raiders reacts to a play during the first round of the 2026 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament against the Akron Zips held at Benchmark International Arena on March 20, 2026 in Tampa, Florida. (Photo by Tyler Schank/NCAA Photos via Getty Images) | NCAA Photos via Getty ImagesHows it going yall? Today, were back with another Big Ten basketball preview. And, unfortunately, we have to talk about the Washington Huskies. The Huskies finished last season with a 16-17 record, going 7-13 in conference missing the NCAA Tournament. UW will be going into the season without their top scorer from last year, Hannes Steinbach, who was drafted 14th overall by the Charlotte Hornets after averaging 18.5 points and 11.8 rebounds. Theyre also losing their 2nd leading scorer, Zoom Diallo, who transferred to Kentucky after averaging 15.7 points and 4.5 assists last year. The Huskies will be returning Wesley Yates III, a 64 guard who averaged just under 13 points last year, although his efficiency could use some work after shooting just 37.1% from the floor. One new name to watch is 510 PG Ryan Beasley, whos coming in from San Francisco. Beasley averaged 13.6 points and 4 assists a game last year, his lone season as the starting PG for the Dons. The other name to watch is LeJuan Watts, a senior forward transfer from Texas Tech. Watts is coming in after averaging ~12 points and 6 rebounds a game last year for the Red Raiders. He played an undersized 4 last season, but is an excellent cutter and can step out and space the floor as well (37% from three for his career). The Ducks will be playing UW twice next year, once at home, once on the road. But as of writing, the schedule hasnt been released. As always, Sco Ducks.

The biggest surprises from Cowboys training camp so far
OXNARD, CALIFORNIA - JULY 30: Brevyn Spann-Ford #89 of the Dallas Cowboys catches the ball during training camp at River Ridge Playing Fields on July 30, 2026 in Oxnard, California. (Photo by Ric Tapia/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesTraining camp is always full of storylines, but every year a handful of players exceed expectations and force their way into the conversation. While stars like Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens will continue to grab the headlines, a few under-the-radar developments have quietly become some of the biggest surprises from the Cowboys time in Oxnard.Brevyn Spann-Ford is making a real push for the TE2 jobHeading into camp based on depth charts, Luke Schoonmaker had a hold on the backup tight end role behind Jake Ferguson with some speculating Spann-Ford could take over. Now, Spann-Ford has become one of the biggest winners of training camp which spells danger for Schoonmaker.Brevyn Spann-Ford with an impressive grab pic.twitter.com/GDg0ZJigMQ Nick Harris (@NickHarrisFWST) August 6, 2026The athletic tight end has consistently flashed as a pass catcher, using his size and movement skills to create difficult matchups. That was always viewed as an area that would help determine whether he could become a complete tight end, and early signs suggest he has taken a significant step forward. He has also shown some pop as a run blocker. This catch by Brevyn Spann-Ford was really impressive pic.twitter.com/wz16ezI1cy Mike Leslie (@MikeLeslieWFAA) August 7, 2026If that continues throughout the preseason, Spann-Ford could not only secure the TE2 role but become an important part of Dallas offensive rotation this season.Jaishawn Barham is looking ready much sooner than expectedThe Cowboys drafted Jaishawn Barham with the expectation that he could eventually become a difference-maker at linebacker. Few expected that process to happen this quickly.Jaishawn Barham and DeMarvion Overshown the first-team linebackers pic.twitter.com/Xd6xdwm9yC Jon Machota (@jonmachota) August 3, 2026Barham has consistently earned praise throughout camp thanks to his speed, range and physicality, with the rookie already receiving opportunities alongside the first-team defense. His ability to diagnose plays and close on the football has stood out, while his athleticism has been evident both against the run and in coverage.Jaishawn Barham is having a strong start to camp pic.twitter.com/Cpz4xH08O3 Nick Harris (@NickHarrisFWST) August 1, 2026After Dallas struggled to find consistent linebacker play last season, Barhams rapid development could end up being one of the most important stories of training camp if it carries into the regular season. The groin injury suffered by Jaishawn Barham yesterday is not considered serious. Calvin Watkins (@calvinwatkins) August 7, 2026Ryan Flournoy is forcing his way into more targetsRyan Flournoy is making a strong case that he will need to see the ball more in 2026.Dak to Ryan Flournoy pic.twitter.com/lPQthueBfA Jon Machota (@jonmachota) August 6, 2026Flournoy has consistently stacked productive practices, showing improved route running and reliable hands to make plays against Dallas defensive backs. His transformation from being cut before last season to his performance at training camp now is astounding. With CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens leading the receiving corps, the Cowboys dont necessarily need another star. However, if Flournoy continues to build on his impressive camp, Dallas may have found another dependable weapon capable of contributing immediately. A three-punch attack at the pass catching position makes for a very tasty offense heading into the regular season.Do you like what you've seen from Ryan Flournoy at Cowboys training camp so far? pic.twitter.com/TEIb7cMnLj DLLS Cowboys (@DLLS_Cowboys) August 6, 2026

India tour of Sri Lanka 2026: Sai Sudharsan ruled out of Test series due to toe injury
MUMBAI: In a big blow to India, their in-form No. 3 batter Sai Sudharsan has been ruled out of the upcoming two-Test series in Sri Lanka due to a toe injury, TOI has exclusively learnt.Sudharsan did not take the flight when the Indian team took off from Mumbai for Sri Lanka on Tuesday (August 4), and thus missed the ongoing three-day warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI in Colombo, which began on Friday (August 8). Sudharsan's untimely injury could open the door for middle-order batter Sarfaraz Khan, who has consistently done well for Mumbai in domestic cricket over the past few years."Sai has been at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for the past few days to undergo treatment for his toe injury. His injury has almost healed, and he was thus confident that he would be declared fit today and travel to Sri Lanka. However, he still hasn't sufficiently recovered from his injury to be declared completely fit for this series. His recovery may take slightly longer," a source in the BCCI told TOI on Saturday. It's learnt that the CoE's medical team has now become extra cautious after a few cases emerged, pacer Harshit Rana being a classic example, of players breaking down despite being cleared by the BCCI facility. The left-hander's injury is a big setback for India considering the fact that he had slammed back-to-back centuries for India A during their shadow tour of Sri Lanka last month. A prolific batter for Gujarat Titans, where he opened alongside India's Test captain Shubman Gill in the IPL, Sudharsan is regarded as a key member of the Test side, with India's team management looking to give him an extended run at No. 3. The Tamil Nadu batter has featured in seven Tests and scored 383 runs at an average of 39, with three half-centuries.However, providing huge relief to India on a day when Sudharsan was ruled out, replacing him at the critical and pivotal No. 3 spot, Karnataka batter Devdutt Padikkal slammed an unbeaten century (103 not out at the time of writing this) and is thus the favourite to bat at the one-down position in the opening Test of the series in Galle, which begins on August 15. Ironically, Padikkal too is a left-hander.Gill injury minorMeanwhile, in a relief for India, it's learnt that India's Test captain Shubman Gill's finger injury, which he suffered while batting in the nets, is "minor," and he will be fit in time for the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. The finger injury forced Gill to miss the ongoing warm-up match as a precautionary measure."Gill's injury isn't serious. It's like a bruise you get when your finger gets stuck in the door. He will be fine soon," a source tracking developments told this paper.
