The Chicago Bears were back at Halas Hall for their sixth practice of training camp on Tuesday, where they conducted their second straight padded practice.TheBearskicked things up a notch on Day 6, where they had several live periods. There was plenty of physicality and intensity on display, which even led to the first scuffle of training camp between two rookies. Overall, it was a win for the defense and the offense had its share of struggles. There was some good injury news as running back Kyle Monangai returned to team drills as he overcomes a soft tissue injury. There were also some notable developments in several position battles.Let's recap Day 6 of Bears training camp:TakeawaysRough showing for offense: The Bears passing game continues to show promise heading into the season, and wide receiver Luther Burden III and tight end Colston Loveland "continued their strong camp today," per Bear Report. But, overall, it was a rough showing for the offense. According toDan Wiederer, this looked like the "sloppiest offensive showing of camp to date. Easily." Wiederer noted that there were a number of struggles, including: "Pre-snap penalties. Misfired passes. Dropped balls. Rickety screen plays. QB1's feet getting tangled coming out from center." On top of that, quarterback Caleb Williams was intercepted by cornerback Tyrique Stevenson. It appeared to be a miscommunication between Williams and tight end Colston Loveland. Greg Braggs added that the "defense looks a step ahead" and the offense "has looked off more than the other practices." He noted it was timing and energy seemed low, especially with live periods. The offense also fell short during the two-minute drill, where quarterback Caleb Williams and Burden were unable to connect on fourth down in the end zone.Heavy focus on the run game, 13 personnel: Tuesday's padded practice featured heavy focus on the run game and 13 personnel, both of which will be key to Ben Johnson's offense being successful. Before practice, defensive coordinator made it clear there would be a heavy focus on 13 personnel, andCourtney Croninnoted that it was "clear the emphasis is gonna be running out of 13." According toBear Report, they "went more run heavy today, by design. The run game should be strong once again. Working a lot of run concepts with the 12 and 13 personnel." They also noted that Chicago was mixing in receivers when they went 13 personnel.First scuffle of training camp: The Bearsamped up the intensity during Tuesday's padded practice, which featured several live periods and brought out the emotions. So it's not surprise that the first scuffle of the summer broke out, featuring a pair of notable rookies. According toSean Hammond, sixth-round rookie defensive tackle Jordan van den Berg slammed undrafted rookie offensive lineman Caden Barnett into the ground after a snap with the third-team units. It was the first time tempers have flared at Halas Hall this summer.Patrick Finleyadded that defensive end Montez Sweat "appeared very excited." In fact, the whole defense was "fired up," according toGreg Braggs.Left tackle, long snapper battle updates: The left tackle battle continues on, but it looks like Braxton Jones is the clear front runner. For the second straight day in pads, Jones was working with the first-team offense as Jedrick Wills Jr. worked with the second team and Kiran Amegadjie with the third team. According toMichal Dwojak, Jones "looked good for the most part." It's worth noting that Jones did start training camp working with the starters for the first two practices, so it'll be interesting to see if Wills or Amegadjie work with the 1s on Wednesday. One of the quieter position battles is at long snapper with first-year pro Luke Elkin and undrafted rookie Beau Gardner. According toBear Report, the team continues to rotate long snappers on every field goal attempt, and that's expected to continue for some time. Meanwhile, it was Cam Lewis working at safety alongside rookie Dillon Thieneman after Coby Bryant's knee injury and Jaylon Jones working at nickel.Dayo Odeyingbo worked inside: The Bears are banking on returning veterans to bolster the defensive line performance, including Dayo Odeyingbo, who signed a three-year, $48 million contract last offseason. Odeyingbo missed the second half of the season with a torn Achilles, but he's going to be key to the defensive line's success. With Montez Sweat and Austin Booker starting off the edge, Chicago has been experimenting with where Odeyingbo has been lining up. If there is a silver lining to last seasons injury cloud, it is that lots of players had to step up and in the process they gained invaluable experience.Continuing with the approach of looking at returning talent, portal acquisitions and incoming true freshmen, lets start with the linebackers which should be a position of strength due to all the returning experience and talent.Luke Mergott started 2025 as a reserve but ended the season as a star with game sealing interceptions in both the ACC Championship Game and the Sun Bowl. Mergott recorded 90 tackles, which was the second most by a Blue Devil during the 2025 season.Four additional linebackers with significant experience return: Nick Morris, Jr. (785 career snaps), Kendall Johnson (648 career snaps), Bradley Gompers (190 career snaps) and Elliot Schaper (118 career snaps). Those snaps are not just raw numbers but rather represent much production. The linebacker position was hurt by injuries in 2025. Can these experienced and talented players stay healthy? The talent and experience are there if the players can remain on the field.Defensive end is another position where Duke will be relying on returning talent. Tyshon Reed, Kevin OConnor, Kobe Smith, Bryce Davis and Semaj Turner have only one start between them but they have combined to play 2,042 snaps over 100 games. These experienced players must step up into the starters role in 2026.On the interior defensive line, Duke has both returnees and portal talent. David Anderson and Preston Watson are the returnees, while Owen Wafle (Penn State) and Dakota Quinonez (Dartmouth) are the portal acquisitions.Anderson (433 career snaps) and Watson (521 career snaps) have combined to record 47 tackles and two quarterback sacks.Waffle arrived from Penn State with a previous stop at Michigan, while Quinonez was First Team All-Ivy League at Dartmouth.Moving on to the secondary, another position which was ravaged by injuries in 2025, improvement is a must here. Dukes pass defense was porous last season. Accordingly, the staff hit the portal hard and brought in multiple players at cornerback and safety to shore up returning talent.Experienced returning cornerbacks Kimari Robinson (24 games/10 starts/1,011 snaps) and Landan Callahan (17 games/6 starts/694 snaps) will be joined by portal acquisitions Dylan Flowers (Western Kentucky), Kyon Loud (Montana), Evan Smith (Northwestern) and Che Ojarikre (Stanford).Robinson and Callahan are proven tacklers with 59 and 43 respectively but neither has recorded an interception. Flowers has three career interceptions while Smith and Ojarikre have one each.At the safety position, Duke returns starter DaShawn Stone (32 games/15 starts/1,365 snaps) and Andrew Pellicciotta (14 games/357 snaps). Stone has recorded 142 tackles and three interceptions while Pellicciotta has 26 tackles and one interception.Patrick Smith-Young arrives from North Texas via the portal. He has 25 career starts, 194 tackles and an interception.There are three incoming true freshmen defensive linemen who might see an opportunity to make an impact if depth along the line becomes an issue: tackles Ayden Cain and Chadwicke Cannon plus end Obinna Umeh.In the Special Teams phase of the game, there are more unknowns than known in my mind.Lets start with the known. Punter Kade Reynoldson is very good and is back for his junior season. Reynoldson has been selected Second Team Preseason All-America and First Team Preseason All-ACC by Phil Steele. Reynoldson has 24 punts of 50+ yards and also serves as the primary holder on field goals and extra points.Unknowns. Who returns punts? Who returns kick-offs? Who is the long snapper? Who is the placekicker?Intense competition during preseason practice will certainly take place. Cosme Salas returns at placekicker but his game action to date has been limited to kick-off duty.Wide receiver Javen Nicholas has experience returning punts at Charlotte in 2025 so he should be in the mix to return punts.
