The absolute king of seeing everything in life as a transaction. If you cant do something for him, he has no time for you. His presumption that everyone in the world operates that way has always been a self-reflection.The movement, and its media arm, work in much the same way. Thats true of the topics it covers as well as its own people. Pundits go from being the face of a network to persona non grata in the blink of an eye.Truth, nuance, and humanity are useless concepts. Everyone is a widget on an assembly line of messaging. No one exists outside that transactional lens, and once youre no longer of any use to them, youre not only out, but you become their next target.For a perfect example, look no further than Caitlin Clark.WNBA player Sophie Cunningham gave the right-wing media a gift when she said in an ESPN profile that I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldnt have to go against biological men. Whileonly 1% of the U.S. populationidentifies as transgender and there were, as of 2024,fewer than 10 transgender student-athletes among the NCAAs 510,000 athletes, the concern has once again become a culture-war battleground, presumably because its one of the few issues conservatives have momentum on amid a wide array of unpopular policies and political trends.Since then, conservative media types have been hounding WNBA players and coaches with questions about biological males playing womens sports and, more specifically, if they would be okay with a transgender woman playing in the WNBA. So far, they havent gotten the answer they wanted (or, perhaps more astutely, theyve gotten the answers they absolutely wanted), as various WNBA coaches have voiced calls for inclusivenessand put their supportbehind transgender athletes.The one beacon of hope amongst conservative pundits was that Clark would once and for all speak up on the issue and side with them. Even before she was drafted, the Indiana Fever star had been an avatar for culture-war conversations around Black female athletes, womens sports, and Whiteness in general, despite much desire on her part to be so. She has become a champion to a cause its not entirely clear she wants anything to do with.Clark, who has at times been visibly frustrated by the spotlight thrust upon her and her status this season, was given the chance to speak on Sunday when she was asked how sheand her teammates have navigated the pre-game demonstrations and outside noise this week.I think, for us, its not really a discussion we really have in our locker room, Clark said. I think its for leagues and the governing bodies to work with their athletes to find solutions, but our focus is on basketball. Thats what we talk about and how we can get wins, and, obviously, we didnt do that tonight.An exasperated Clark interrupted a follow-up question by saying, I just answered for you.Clark was, in the parlance of our time, sticking to sports. And that, it turns out, was the worst thing she could have done in the minds of many conservative media members.Caitlin Clark might be the biggest coward in the history of sports. While defending Sophie Cunninghams right to free speech, they admonished Clark over hers. The same voices that demanded pro athletes stick to sports and shut up and dribble were now demanding that a pro athlete put their personal and political beliefs on display for the entire world when asked, as if she were a trained seal and it was time to perform.The transaction failed. And when that happens, theres a price to be paid.The bat signal appeared to go out on Tuesday that this was not going to be a winning strategy, with several conservativevoices coming around to say that Clark is under no obligation to plant a flag in the ground on this or any hot-button issue. Its a realization thesports media world at largehas long known, despite criticism about agendas and biases. Admitting one was wrong isnt part of the playbook, so it seems unlikely that the refocus will stick.It must be exhausting spending ones entire day living a transactional lifestyle, and living life with a constant need for expectations to be met and demands to be followed seems like it would leave you miserable and unfulfilled. Caitlin Clark is a generational talent only just starting a historic run in one of the hottest sports leagues in the country. Being a fan of her is supposed to fill one with joy, excitement, and awe. Choosing to sacrifice all of that because she walked into the trap you intentionally set for her seems like a waste of ones time and a depressing use of ones life, whatever your beliefs.The post Conservative media ate Caitlin Clark up. CHICAGO If Charles Correa was still looking for confirmation that his transfer from UNLV to Purdue football a year ago was the right move, he got it at Big Ten Media Days.As the junior linebacker was conducting interviews, sitting to his left were his parents, who raised Correa more than 4,000 miles away in Kuli'ou'ou, Hawaii. "I owe them everything up to this point in my life, and for them to be able to experience all these cool things with me has been truly special."A stay in downtown Chicago included dinner at a seafood restaurant."My grandma, this is her first time in Chicago in 30 years," Morrissette said. "This is the first time on a flight in however many years. She has probably never come to any of my games, so to see my grandma here is huge to me and my mom. She is my ride or die. She is going to ride everywhere with me."Odom's college football journey began in 1996 as a linebacker for the Missouri Tigers. While he's spent three decades in the college game, he knows the timetable as a player is short. It was part of the reason he wanted to invite the three Purdue player representatives' families for a Chicago outing."You look at the moment in time that you get a chance to be a college player, how short that window is," Odom said. "I want families to be able to experience every single thing that they can with them. So it was great Purdue allowed us to do that. ... Has the new era of player movement cut down on the number of open quarterback competitions?There isn't a proliferation of schools still looking for their starter as fall camps get underway ahead of the 2026 season. But there are still a few prominent teams who haven't picked their starter. Here's a rundown of the biggest quarterback competitions heading into August.Alabama Crimson TideAustin Mack or Keelon RussellThe most high-profile quarterback competition of the summer is in Tuscaloosa, where the Tide are looking for Ty Simpson's successor after he was a first-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams after just one season as a starter. Mack, who came from Washington with coach Kalen DeBoer, was Simpson's backup in 2025. He threw 32 passes for 228 yards and also tossed two touchdowns and filled in when Simpson was injured in the Rose Bowl loss to Indiana.Russell was a five-star recruit in the class of 2025 and the No. 2 quarterback in the country behind Michigan's Bryce Underwood. He also got spot duty and threw 15 passes a season ago. He could add a dimension to Alabama's run game similar to the one that Jalen Milroe provided when he was the starter before Simpson."I think they're high-level, elite quarterbacks," DeBoer said at SEC media days. "You got to understand protections, you got to be able to check and adjust. Run game, loaded box checks. Those guys are making the decision on every play."At the end of the day, the guy that will be the guy is the guy that's going to have complete control of what we're doing and puts us in the best position to win football games and score points."The Vols also added former Colorado QB Ryan Staub through the transfer portal, but he's likely a backup option. Berlowitz was the No. 2 QB in 2025, but threw just 17 passes and had 11 rushing attempts. Muschamp threw three passes and Elliott is a redshirt freshman. It seems likely that Curtis is going to see significant playing time in 2026, even if he's not the Week 1 starter.Iowa HawkeyesHank Brown or Jeremy HecklinskiCan Iowa throw for more than 150 yards a game for the first time since 2022? That's not a facetious question, either. After averaging 157 passing yards per game four seasons ago, the Hawkeyes have averaged 119, 132 and 143 passing yards in each of the past three seasons.Brown, a former transfer from Auburn, was Mark Gronowski's primary backup a season ago and is a senior in 2026. He threw for 107 yards on 21 pass attempts in 2025. Hecklinski started his career at Wake Forest in 2024 before transferring to Iowa and appearing in two games last season. He was John Mateer's backup in 2025 after playing in seven games in 2024. Overall, Hawkins is 91-of-147 passing for 950 yards and six TDs with two interceptions over nine games with the Sooners and has rushed for 262 yards and two scores. Hawkins feels like a great fit in coach Rich Rodriguez's offense. And a change of scenery could be a big boost to his career.Cincinnati BearcatsJC French, Samaj Jones or Liam O'BrienFrench arrives at Cincinnati after three seasons at Georgia Southern. After appearing in 10 games in 2023, French became the Eagles' starter in 2024. A season ago, he was 248-of-389 for 2,929 yards and 20 TDs with eight interceptions. He also rushed for 315 yards and six touchdowns.O'Brien transferred from Penn, where he was 211-of-314 for 2,376 yards and 19 TDs and six interceptions a season ago. The senior has one year of eligibility remaining after four years at the FCS level. Jones was Cincy's No. 3 QB in 2025 and attempted seven passes.
