Atletico Madrid reiterate unwavering stance on Barcelona target despite recent push
Atletico Madrid reiterate unwavering stance on Barcelona target despite recent pushBarcelona are still giving their all to try to sign Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid this summer transfer window. After a few weeks of the club looking at alternatives in vain, Bara have returned to the Alvarez file, pushing to hold fresh talks in recent days.Since the start of the summer, Los Colchoneros have maintained a stubborn stance that the 26-year-old is not for sale.Sporting director Deco has travelled to Madrid in recent days to hold talks with the players camp and strategise how to move forward with the negotiations.Atleticos message remains the sameAccording to Mundo Deportivo, despite the Catalan clubs push in recent days, Atletico have reaffirmed that the Argentine striker is simply not for sale. The report says club officials continue to stand by the message CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin delivered last month, insisting there is no price that would convince them to sell the World Cup winner.Atletico Madrid remain unmoved. (Photo by Fran Santiago/Getty Images)It adds that the Madrid-based clubs internal position has not moved one bit in recent days. One of the clearest indications of Atleticos confidence is their activity in the transfer market. The club recently rejected the opportunity to sign Victor Osimhen for around 75 million because they already consider the centre-forward position occupied by Alvarez. The Argentine has also begun the personalised pre-season programme prepared by Atletico for players returning later after the FIFA World Cup.Barcelona continue working behind the scenesBarcelona are continuing to work behind the scenes to make a move should Atletico change their stance at some point. The Catalan club still do not have a striker in the squad who has taken over the vacant number nine jersey from Robert Lewandowski.10 August could prove to be a pivotal date in this transfer saga. Alvarez is expected to return to Atletico training on that date.Barcelona refuse to give up. (Photo by Carl Recine/Getty Images)From a Bara perspective, if the 26-year-old does not turn up for training on that date, it could massively boost the clubs chances.Barcelona are also dealing with an issue of their own, with the only other striker in the squad, Ferran Torres, linked with a move to PSG.The Spaniard is in the final 12 months of his contract at the Catalan club and has made it clear that his future remains open, as things stand.Deco has a lot of work in the upcoming weeks as he looks to navigate a tricky period in the transfer window.Hansi Flicks first-team squad ahead of the new season is slowly taking shape, and it remains to be seen how many incomings and outgoings happen between now and the end of the window.

Three first Triple-A homers power Red Wings past RailRiders
Leandro Pineda, Maxwell Romero Jr. and Sam Petersen each hit their first Triple-A home run, while Jackson Kent allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings as the Rochester Red Wings rolled to an 8-1 win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Wednesday night at PNC Field.Kent allowed three hits and struck out five to improve to 8-3 on the season. The Red Wings took the lead in the third inning. Seaver King singled and Phillip Glasser walked, setting up Trey Lipscomb, who hit a run-scoring single. Riley Adams followed with an RBI single to left, scoring Glasser and extending Rochester's lead to 2-0.Rochester broke the game open in the fifth. After Petersen walked, Pineda hit a two-run homer to right-center, pushing the lead to 4-0. The blast was Pineda's first Triple-A home run, and Romero followed one batter later with his first Triple-A homer as Rochester stretched the lead to 5-0. Pineda finished with two hits and two RBIs as part of a balanced Red Wings attack that saw five different players drive in runs. The RailRiders briefly answered when Yanquiel Fernndez hit a solo homer in the sixth, but Kent limited the damage to that one run before handing the ball to the bullpen. Jake Bird, Cole Henry and Kyle Nicolas combined for 3 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit to secure the win.The Red Wings added on in the ninth. Lipscomb hit his 19th homer of the season to center, and Petersen capped the night with a two-run blast to left, his first in Triple-A, giving Rochester their final 8-1 margin.Rochester finished 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position but maximized its power, hitting four home runs and collecting nine hits while drawing six walks. Oklahoma Sooners front seven the best in college football
The Oklahoma Sooners' defensive front seven has become one of the best in college football after a disruptive and productive 2025. Despite the losses of Gracen Halton, Damonic Williams, Marvin Jones, Jr., and R Mason Thomas, there's an expectation that the unit will once again be one of the best in the sport.CBS Sports ranked their top front-sevens in college football, and the Sooners came in at No. 1 in the nation.Oklahoma's front seven is led by All-SEC second-team defensive end Taylor Wein and preseason All-SEC selection David Stone at defensive tackle. Fellow defensive tackle Jayden Jackson will play a huge role for the Sooners and be as impactful as anyone on OU's defense. The Sooners need guys like Nigel Smith, Trent Wilson, Bishop Thomas, and James Carrington to raise the talent floor in the defensive tackle rotation. Smith, Wilson, and Carrington were four-star prospects coming out of high school and have the talent and ability to be disruptive in Oklahoma's defense. But they haven't played meaningful snaps at the collegiate level. To round out the starting lineup, a competition between Adepoju Adebawore, Danny Okoye, Kenny Ozowalu, and others will determine the snap distribution opposite Wein. But in Brent Venables' defense, you can expect the defensive line to make plays in the backfield throughout the 2026 season. There may not be an answer, but the Sooners like the talent they have to work with in 2026. Then there's the linebacker corps, which might be the best in college football. Three-year starter Kip Lewis leads the way along with 2025's breakout star Owen Heinecke and high-profile Michigan transfer Cole Sullivan. Add in cheetah Reggie Powers, who was great in his rotational role last season, and the Sooners have a fast and physical group of linebackers. While Oklahoma is replacing key starters at the first and second levels of the defense, Venables and his staff have the team in position to be just as good up front with the way they've recruited and developed the depth on defense. The expectations are high for Oklahoma's defense. After what we saw in 2025, there's no reason to think they can't be as good as they were a year ago. 'We must be ready with every answer': Gautam Gambhir's rallying cry before Sri Lanka Tests
NEW DELHI: India head coach Gautam Gambhir has delivered a rousing message to his young Test squad ahead of the two-match series against Sri Lanka, urging Shubman Gill and his teammates to ensure they are mentally and physically prepared for every challenge from the opening morning in Galle. With the World Test Championship campaign gathering momentum and India looking to climb from fifth in the standings, Gambhir stressed that meticulous preparation over the coming days would determine how the visitors fare in spin-friendly Sri Lankan conditions. The Indian team began training at Colombo's Nondescripts Cricket Club (NCC) ground on Wednesday and will play a three-day warm-up match against a Sri Lanka XI from August 7 to 9 before heading to Galle for the first Test, beginning on August 15. The second Test will be played at Colombo's Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) from August 23 to 27.'Make sure we tick all the boxes'Addressing the players in a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Gambhir laid down the challenge for the squad."Guys, we know what's in front of us. We know what we are playing for. We can do the volume, we can push our limits, we can tick all the boxes. Come 15th morning, whether we are batting first, or whether we are bowling first, we're absolutely ready with every answer, every question that's thrown at us and every answer we're ready to give. So make sure we tick all the boxes from now on," Gambhir said. The warm-up fixture assumes added importance after India's recent struggles against quality spin bowling. Several frontline batters, including captain Shubman Gill, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal, had already begun working on their game against spin before arriving in Sri Lanka, but the three-day match is expected to provide a crucial taste of local conditions. Many members of the current squad are playing red-ball cricket in Sri Lanka for the first time, with only Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav having previous Test experience in the island nation.Warm welcome for newcomersGambhir also used the team meeting to welcome newcomers Saransh Jain and Auqib Nabi, along with newly appointed fielding coach Subhadeep Ghosh.Guys, welcome everyone. We've got a couple of new guys in. To start with, Saransh, congratulations, you've worked extremely hard to be here. Make sure that you make your family and country proud whenever you get that opportunity.Secondly, I want to congratulate Auqib, you had a phenomenal last season, and made J&K win the Ranji Trophy, which is a great achievement. Congratulations once again. Lastly, I want to welcome Joy as well. He's worked with so many teams for so many years. I'm sure his passion, his commitment will carry this team forward and make sure that his energy levels will help everyone achieve the target, which we want to do, Gambhir added.India have further strengthened their preparations by drafting in four domestic spinners Harsh Dubey, Shivang Kumar, Tanush Kotian and Vipraj Nigam as net bowlers to help the batters sharpen their game against spin. The visitors, however, head into the series with injury concerns. Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out after failing to recover fully from a knee injury, while Washington Sundar will miss the opening Test with a hamstring issue. Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Akash Deep are also unavailable. The two-match contest forms part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle, with India currently fifth on the table with a points percentage of 48.150, one place above Sri Lanka, who are sixth with 41.67. 132991044
