I have a slew of talented teammates over at Yahoo you should find someone here that you line up with.Perhaps this soft-pedal opening was encouraged by the recent Salary Cap Draft at the Fantasy Football Expo. I am in the Jim Brown division this year, and on July 25 I participated in two drafts (one snake, one salary cap) against 13 other skillful industry members. The drafts were fun but competitive, one of the highlights of the year. And although I pride myself on being an experienced and skilled salary cap player, I did not love my results in that draft.(Coincidentally, I liked my snake draft team a fair amount, but thats a discussion for another day.)Part of my ambivalence over the salary cap result speaks to the format and challenge at hand. You should love your roster in a 10-team league and like your roster in a 12-team league. When 14 teams go into battle, its simply not possible to have check marks everywhere. All of the teams have a weakness or two to address. And when your 13 rivals are all sharp players and content creators, the winning margins are slim. The format mandates two starting backs and will take up to five depending on flex considerations. Brown is a perfect second-round pick (or value) who could easily return first-round stats. The rest of this roster is filled with boring veteran values and a couple of upside throws (Mason, Corum). I would posit that Corums usage in the second half of 2025 makes him flex worthy immediately in 2026.The fix: Although this isnt the sexiest RB room in the world, I like what I landed. But it came at the expense of the WR build, and I should have considered a more traditional RB/WR split. One reason I wound up so heavy on backs is because thats where the value was in the second half of the draft. But this also reflects how I needed to be more aggressive with some of the WRs in the 15-30 range.Tight EndsTE$15Sam LaPortaTE$6Jake FergusonBoth of these guys went over projected cost because of late-game inflation thats a nice way of saying some managers (like me) werent properly aggressive early and had to overpay for some stuff late. Nonetheless, I like this room, investing in solid tight ends tied to plus offenses. LaPorta seems healthy now and has risen to TE5 on my board; I didnt get a nice salary on him, but you likely will.The fix: No regrets here, although Colston Loveland didnt make it to $20 and maybe I should have elbowed more on him. Tyler Warren, who I thought might be undersalaried, was pushed up to $22, no bargain.Wide ReceiversWR$43CeeDee LambWR$13Courtland SuttonWR$13Ricky Pearsall*WR$5Jalen NailorWR$4Adonai MitchellEven if I tell myself a best-case story for all of these guys, this room is thin. And the Pearsall news went south shortly after my draft of him (remember, this was a July draft); Ive already had to cut him. Even in a 14-team league, this room is a major problem and we know impact WRs are almost impossible to find on the wire.The fix: At some point in the second half of the salary cap draft I needed to identify players I wanted or needed at WR, with the aim that I would land some of them, even if overpayment was required. I did plenty of identifying, but I didnt pay accordingly.Again, my friend Harmon was a thorn on my side. We both had a WR need when tier-ender Mike Evans came up, and I ultimately walked away when the salary got to $32. Harmon literally received a two-dollar discount on Evans because the salary was incorrectly recorded as $30 perhaps that led to me missing Lawrence later. But at that juncture of the draft, I needed to identity how important Evans was to my roster, and not been stung by the excess needed to land him.This also reflects another leak in my salary-cap strategy I am often reluctant to nominate players I like or I want/need. Generally this isnt a bad thing because introducing the best players you dont need or want is a good idea get your opponents to spend some cash, and get some definition of the market. But if you never toss out a player who you want, you become easier to read and you run the risk of bad timing dictating a poor player result.I cant say this enough you need to pay for your players while your opponents still have options. One way to make sure you hit that pocket is to introduce some players you plan on chasing.I know the last roster you drafted surely looks better than mine, above. Its probably not a 14-team salary cap draft and its probably not against 13 other industry titans, but it also reflects that you probably executed your plan (or handled in-draft variables) better than I did. I can accept this. The only way to patch leaks is to be honest and self-critical with your evaluations.Tomorrow can be better than today.For the second half of this article, Ill run back my established salary cap strategies. Weve run them before, but theyre worth a review every summer.Tips for Salary Cap LeaguesTip 1: Get others to spend their moneyPretty simple here. When your opponents shell out cash, they lose leverage going forward. This is why most of your nominations should be on the best players you don't want, can't afford or have a conflict with (if you roster Trey McBride early, might as well throw Brock Bowers out there you won't roster both of them in a standard format).Tip 2: Vary your nomination styleSure, most of my throws will be on those players whom I'm not targeting. But you don't want to be too predictable. Some managers will only throw out players they want, and some managers will never throw out players they covet. This becomes exploitable to a sharp opponent. Try to get a sense of the style of your opponents, it will help you know how to handle those players when it gets late in the bidding cycle.Tip 3: Closely monitor the market behaviorAlthough it's not perfect, it's likely that players with similar Straight Draft ADP will also have similar salaries in Salary Cap. So if you're targeting Chase Brown, you might note carefully what DeVon Achane or Omarion Hampton commands on the market. The Puka Nacua and Amon-Ra St. Brown salaries will be close in most leagues. You get the point. Everyone has a different level of engagement and focus in a Salary Cap draft, but I'll spend a lot of time trying to figure out the market behavior puzzle.Tip 4: Bid because it helps you, not because it screws someone elseIf you're a veteran Salary Cap player, you might be really good at running up the bid on a player you really don't want all with the eye of exploiting an opponent who seems set on getting the current player, no matter what. If you can execute this properly, it's extremely satisfying.But if the other manager backs out and you get stuck with someone you don't like or someone who doesn't fit your roster build and current salary structure it's a tilting experience.You have to be realistic with your skill in this area. I don't want to discourage you from challenging an opponent if you think your read is correct. But if you're not sure, or you're new to the format, I recommend against dancing this close to the sun.Tip 5: Don't confuse the room with your bidding purposeI know it's fun to make bids in a Salary Cap room. You want to be in the mix, you want to dance the dance.But it's critical you don't confuse the room.Once a player starts to zero in on his finishing number, it's usually a battle between two managers over that player. If you engage in late bidding, the rest of the room thinks you're going to salary enforce that is, you're going to make sure the other manager doesn't get too cheap a salary. Meanwhile, the non-bidders will oftentimes be engaged with something else what their roster looks like, what they need, what's left in the pool, etc.If you engage in walk-up bidding on a player just for the fun of it and then back out because you weren't really serious, what often happens is an opponent lands a player under market because the room mistakenly thought you were serious on bidding and would defend the bid at the end. If I'm unlikely to be in on a player late, I probably won't bother bidding early. It confuses the room, and I can use that time for better things, anyway.And heck, if you're not a part of the bidding but the salary does seem to be stalling far too low, you can always bounce in late.Tip 6: Try to get your players while your opponents still have alternativesOh man, this one is huge. If you wait until the last good player at a perceived tier, that's when inflation is likely to kick in. You're now in a supermarket just hours before a snowstorm, fighting over the last loaf of bread. Avoid this nightmare scenario. Be sensitive to the tier drops and player groupings as you perceive them.Tip 7: Whenever possible, save some money for the endgameThe endgame is the only time when your nomination choice comes without any uncertainty. In the early part of the draft, no one really knows if you want the player you toss out there. At the end of the day, it's clear you want that name, especially once you're out of overbid funds. Don't handcuff yourself at this critical juncture. Have some leverage, keep some flexibility.Play Yahoo's new College Fantasy Football game: Create or join a league now!If you are pliable for the endgame, you'll accomplish two important goals. First and foremost, you'll have control for the end of the salary cap draft and you'll get a healthy share of the players you actually want. Second, you'll be done with the proceedings quicker than most, and don't blow off that point. As much fun as fantasy drafts and auctions can be, no one ever wished them to be any longer. Getting back to real life is a welcome thing. I don't know about you, but my draft/auction hangover (read: headache) is a harsh reality around hour three or four.A lot of fantasy players shrug off the $1 burden for the endgame. "It's just a draft at the end, anyway, no one has any leverage," they say.True, most salary cap drafts do eventually get to that point. But before the last of the overbid money is sucked up, consider the hand you're dealing with if you're out of extra cash while some of your opponents still have a slush fund:You can't overbid anyone else for a player. You really don't matter except when it's your turn to name a player.If you name a player who's valuable, your bid is instantly trampled.If you call out a stiff, you're probably stuck with him.Now sit around and do nothing for another 8-10 minutes (while players you want go to your opponents).I recognize some great Salary Cap players will favor a Stars and Scrubs build where they are fine with $1 options at the end most of those players get cut, anyway. In a league with lower starting requirements, I would absolutely go Stars and Scrubs. But the more starters a league requires, the less likely I am to run a Stars and Scrubs build.Tip 8: Appreciate key numbers in the endgameOften for the endgame, it's a race to $2 a bunch of managers will have a little bit of overbid leverage remaining, but not too much. Other times, its about one manager shouting out his max offer before a competitor can offer the same max offer.In the early nominations, you don't have to be on the edge of your seat, ready to jump in quickly. Those walkups take a while. For the endgame, you need to be hyper-alert because the player bidding periods are much tighter. Often it's all about shouting out (or typing in) the key number first.Tip 9: Sometimes it's good to let the other team win a playerIt's a nuanced idea, but you want to recognize if your opponent might be in a bad spot if he wins the current player on the table. Will that win deplete them of all of their overbid leverage moving forward? Will that win give them an awkward, unbalanced roster? It takes some time to recognize this dynamic, but with experience, you'll start to see it in action.Bonus Tip 1: Experienced rooms vs. inexperienced roomsIf you find yourself in a room with a bunch of salary cap first timers, expect spending to be aggressive and borderline crazy. If your room is more about experienced players, the spending is often measured -- and might allow for surprising bargains with the early throws. In short, hold back with the newbies, and be open to aggression against the sharps. This is just a guide, but I've seen a repeatable pattern here.Bonus Tip 2: When you need a breakWhen a big-ticket item is introduced that you don't want or need, there's your bathroom break. Sometimes I'll make a nomination with this purpose in mind.I'm sure there are dozens of things I left out. These conversations are always open-minded in my mind. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and quarterback Baker Mayfield continue to publicly negotiate as the two sides work toward a contract extension. Those talks havent gone well so far, with Mayfield admitting he felt disrespected by the teams latest offer. Because of that, team general manager Jason Licht came out Thursday and said the franchise tag would be an option next offseason if the team and Mayfield cant agree on a long-term deal.Licht said using the franchise tag on Baker Mayfield in 2027 is an option, not something they would plan on or want to do, but something that they could do if they needed to. Goal is still working out a longterm extension. Greg Auman (@gregauman) August 6, 2026While that makes things sound dire, Licht did reiterate that the teams goal was to work out a long-term extension with Mayfield. The 31-year-old Mayfield is in the final year of a three-year, $100 million contract he signed with the Buccaneers in 2024. At the time, Mayfield was coming off a prove-it season with the team, where he threw for over 4,000 yards and chipped in 28 passing touchdowns. That performance earned Mayfield a long-term deal with the Bucs, and resurrected his NFL career after things looked bleak following a rough 2022 season.Over the past two seasons, Mayfield proved his 2023 wasnt a fluke. He turned in a truly great year in 2024, throwing for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns, leading the Buccaneers to the playoffs. His numbers declined from that high in 2025, though he was still solid, throwing for 3,693 yards and 26 touchdowns. Like most players entering the final year of their contracts, Mayfield was hoping to lock down some long-term financial security instead of playing out the final year of his current deal. While the Bucs have sent offers, they havent been up to Mayfields standard. The quarterback didnt hold back when discussing the issue in late July, saying he felt disappointed, disrespected and undervalued.Those comments apparently irked some in the Buccaneers front office, which did not appreciate the way Mayfield spoke about the organization. Though there may be some animosity between both sides, Licht did his best to try and offer support to Mayfield as both sides continue to work on an extension. When asked whether the team believed Mayfield was a franchise quarterback, Licht answered in the affirmative. We think he is, Licht said. We love Baker. Our feelings for Baker haven't changed."He also said he understood why Mayfield was disappointed and frustrated with the situation, saying the team feels similarly. Licht on how candid Mayfield was about not getting a deal: "Baker, as we all know here, is a very fiery competitor who's not afraid to speak his mind. I'm sure he's disappointed, frustrated; we were too. We're in a good place. He's focused on having the best year of his career." Greg Auman (@gregauman) August 6, 2026While playing a year on the franchise tag wouldnt necessarily be the worst thing for Mayfield, it probably isnt his preferred way to operate. Players on the franchise tag receive a one-year deal at an extremely high salary compared to others at their position. But that situation comes with risks. If Mayfield gets injured or has a down season, he could lose millions once he finally hits the market. Because of that, players tend to value long-term security over a one-year deal on the franchise tag. The opposite scenario can play out too. If a player on the franchise tag turns in a career year, they stand to make way more money on the market. Its a high-risk, high-reward gambit. Mayfield already took a deal like that when he joined the Buccaneers in 2023. At the time, Mayfield was coming off a disappointing 2022, when he made appearances on the Carolina Panthers scout team before eventually being traded to the Los Angeles Rams, where he was the teams emergency starting option down the stretch.Mayfield performed well in his limited time with the Rams, but teams were still skeptical of his success. Because of that, he signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the team in 2023. Mayfield bet on himself and won that time around. While its possible he could repeat that scenario in 2026, Mayfield probably has no desire to relive the past, especially after he proved over the past three seasons that hes a Pro Bowl-caliber starter.

Conwell was drafted at 37th in the second round of the NBA Draft. The Louisville guard averaged 18.8 points in the 34 games played in his senior year.Conwell absolutely dominated in his Summer League debut. Even though he only played four games, he averaged 20.5 points on 41.7% shooting. He has a player option again in 2028.This flexibility is huge for Miami. The Heat hold onto an elite small forward to slot alongside Bam and Giannis while also saving money for the next few years to hopefully build on this team.Miamis Free Agency Moves Round Out the RosterFree agency negotiations began on June 30, with official contract signings beginning on July 6. Despite all the moves they made so far, the Heat had some work left to do.They started their free agency with the re-signing of forward Simone Fontecchio on a one-year deal for $2.6 million. This contract comes at a much cheaper cost than the contract Fontecchio originally signed with the Heat. The forward had a promising year in Miami, averaging 8.5 points on 41.2% shooting.Fontecchio shared his thoughts on playing with Giannis this upcoming season, Its going to make my life so much easier. I hope to make his life easier too.Another big signing the Heat made was former Nugget Tim Hardaway Jr., son of Heat legend Tim Hardaway. The sharpshooter signed a one-year deal for $6.5 million, bringing in strong shooting for a low cost. Hardaway averaged 13.5 points on 44.7% shooting and finished third in the Sixth Man of the Year race.Despite his father initially saying he wouldnt allow it, Tim Hardaway Jr. will wear retired his fathers retired No. 10 jersey. It was retired in 2009 to honor his fathers tenure with the franchise from 1996 to 2001. Mahendra Singh Dhoni's leadership has often been defined by more than his tactical decisions on the field.
