Kerr brilliance keeps MI London's slim hopes alive
Melie Kerr hit four sixes in her 69 not out [Getty Images]The Hundred women's competition, Lord'sMI London 122-9 (100 balls): Kerr 69* (41); Dean 3-26London Spirit 119-8 (100 balls): De Klerk 35 (29); Matthews 2-21MI London won by three runsScorecard. TableMelie Kerr played a magnificent lone hand with the bat to keep struggling MI London's faint qualification hopes alive in the women's Hundred.MI London, who were previously winless in five games, slumped to 23-5 and 64-8 and were on the brink of elimination to their rivals London Spirit. But all-rounder Kerr held firm and finished with 69 not out from 41 balls to propel her side to 122-9 before the bowlers ground out a three-run win. MI London took the confidence boost into their bowling innings and reduced Spirit to 51-4 before a stand of 42 between Nadine de Klerk and Marizanne Kapp recovered their chase. De Klerk's departure for 35 swung the momentum back in MI London's favour as they needed 15 from six balls, and Spirit curiously promoted both Charis Pavely and Katie George above the destructive West Indies batter Deandra Dottin. Dottin then whacked back-to-back fours to keep her side in contention but Nicola Carey held her nerve with six needed off the final ball and Spirit finished 119-8.It completed a remarkable fightback from MI London, led by Kerr who had not hit a six in The Hundred before this innings, in which she clubbed four alongside five fours.Kerr could only watch from the non-striker's end as Spirit captain Charlie Dean took three wickets in five balls, removing Hollie Armitage for six and Nicola Carey and Alice Monaghan without scoring.Chinelle Henry, with 22 off 15, was the only other MI London batter to reach double figures before Kerr took 26 crucial runs from the last 10 balls including three sixes off the previously dominant Dean. Despite the win, MI London's fate is out of their hands. They need to win both of their remaining games comfortably to boost their net run-rate and for other results to go their way, and Spirit are in the same position.Who am I? This overlooked quality could be a key to Vanderbilt football's success
There's an aspect of Vanderbilt football's recent success that some players feel has been overlooked: Since the start of Clark Lea's tenure with the program, the culture has improved.Specifically, the Commodores have come to love football more than before."I feel like the guys now have such a love for the game," Vanderbilt linebacker Bryan Longwell said. "I feel like sometimes we had some guys who, they were here, but they weren't really here. We heard guys forecasting what games were going to be like. And now everybody has such a love, such a competition."That culture has only grown over the years, and it hasn't diminished without Diego Pavia. Practices are faster-paced now, with players who embrace a fight to win their spot. That's shown up on the field, where Vanderbilt has gone from 2-10 to 7-6 to 10-3.Linebacker Nick Rinaldi has seen that transformation happen himself as he's gone from walk-on to scholarship contributor."I'm new to the game still, compared to the other guys," Rinaldi said. "The love has grown so much since I got to college, and you'd be surprised. It's been exponential as I've started to play more, become a leader in all these little things."Linebackers coach Nick Lezynski described both Rinaldi and fellow linebacker Bryce Cowan as students of the game who can act akin to additional coaches at times. The linebacker core is one of the most experienced on the team. Rinaldi and Cowan are both fifth-years while Longwell is a senior. All three of them have been on the team their entire college careers without ever transferring, giving them the chance to grow in coach Clark Lea's system. In 2025, Longwell was the team's co-leader with 71 total tackles and also recorded nine tackles for loss, one sack and one pass breakup. Rinaldi recorded 47 tackles, seven tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. He also led the team with nine quarterback hurries. Cowan recorded 31 tackles, four tackles for loss and three sacks. "(Rinaldi could) maybe have a career in this after," Lezynski said. "He's knocking at the door of that right now, and I think that he's grown so much in terms of his love of the game. He loves the game now. ... I don't know if he always loved it. But he loves it, and so that's been really cool to see because he's watching as much tape, more tape than I'm watching. He's in my office all the time. ... Like Bryce, he's coaching the younger players now. So he's become a voice and an extension of the coaches."For Rinaldi, who is pursuing a master's degree in finance and has primarily been intending on pursuing a career in finance, coaching has become more of a thought for what he could do after his career is over. "It is a thought," Rinaldi said. "Five years ago, I would not be thinking that, but as time goes on, I get more and more connected with the game. So it's definitely in the back of my mind. Maybe it's coming towards the front a little bit."Aria Gerson covers Vanderbilt athletics for The Tennessean. No sterner test than Wolves tie - Vale boss Brady
Jon Brady became Port Vale boss in January [Getty Images]Port Vale face "no sterner test" for an opening competitive game of the new season than Friday's Carabao Cup tie against Wolves, says boss Jon Brady.Relegated from the Premier League last season, Wolves are expected to be strong candidates to go straight back up from the Championship this term.Vale have their own promotion ambitions in League Two after dropping out of the third tier in 2025-26, and Brady is keen to see where his side is at in the game at Molineux after their pre-season."It certainly means something. If you don't win you're out, if you win you're through. There's no sterner test," he told BBC Radio Stoke."I'm excited. I spoke to the boys about the excitement to see them at probably one of the best tests they'll get. "When the draw came out you were like: 'Wow'. There's a team that's come down from the Premier League and expecting to bounce back this season. "So it's a real strong test but I want to see how we stand up to it."Fit-again Faal ready to perform for Vale - BradyGrateful Hernandez ready to entertain at Port ValeBrady quietly happy with Vale's transfer businessVale set to play with a different styleWolves are undergoing their own rebuild under new head coach Cesar Peixoto and Brady has already been impressed by what he has seen."The level of player they've got there is very good. Obviously we'll need to be extremely organised in and out of possession and know that they really try and suffocate you in their press," he said."Obviously, a new manager's come in and implemented his style and it's a real strong, aggressive 4-3-3 and they've been lauded in the last couple of weeks about how aggressive their press has been in the middle of the pitch and how they're breaking on teams."Brady said he felt no team in the EFL is facing a harder tie that Vale in the first round but vowed to "take it head on".He said: "We've faced tough tests before but it's really about the performance for us. We're going to put our best team out possible and try to play the best we can."Let's go out and attack it - that's the only way I want to go."All the latest Port Vale newsBrady has overseen a significant overhaul of his squad during the summer, with 12 players brought in on various deals, and said fans might see a different style this season."It's still early, but you want to see the fruits of your labour and see how that transcends onto the pitch," he said."Obviously you want to excite our fans, you want to win games, so obviously our style is probably going to change. "I had to stick at a certain style last season and hopefully we're a little bit more fluid, but I don't want to lose our purpose. "Roughly 50% of the squad's changed and we're trying to gel and knit that together. That'll take time, but we feel we're improving each week and that's the most important thing."
