SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJedd Fisch expects SEC transfer DT to contribute immediately in 2026Until Thursday, the most anyone had seen Mississippi State transfer Kai McClendon do ahead of his first season with the Washington Huskies was a lot of boxing. The 6-foot-2, 317-pound junior, who missed all of the 2025 season with the SEC program after suffering an ACL injury during spring practice, was usually heard before he was seen, working off to the side with director of sport science Ben Creamer, with gloves on, going through drills while rehabbing from his injury. Then on Thursday, he put on his jersey for the first time. While he was still limited and mainly worked off to the side during his first fully-suited practice, Jedd Fisch wasn't shy about his expectations for McClendon.Mississippi State transfer DT Kai McClendon is listed at 6-2 340lb. Started 5 games (played in 12) as a true freshman in 2024 with 30 TKL, 2 TFL, 0.5 SK, and 10 stops. pic.twitter.com/Myo9DlTt9T Nick Lemkau (@nicklemkaucfb) August 6, 2026I would expect him to be, if not a starter, absolutely a huge contributor to our defensive line, Fisch said on Thursday. We brought him in here to be a huge part of our defensive line rotation, and from what we saw on film, he can do that.As a true freshman for the Bulldogs in 2024, McClendon played in 12 games and made five starts, registering 30 tackles, including 2 for loss and half a sack. Now, he'll have a promising unit around him along the interior of defensive coordinator Ryan Walters' front that, with the addition of McClendon, could take a step forward and become one of the best in the Big Ten.Alongside senior Elinneus Davis, who the Huskies believe can ascend to stardom in 2026, fellow transfer portal acquisitions Darin Conley and DeSean Watts, and four-star freshmen Derek Colman-Brusa and TI Umu-Cais, Walters has the depth and talent he desires up front to run his not-so-traditional base defense that became his signature at Illinois, which includes a five-man "bear" look with three defensive tackles on the field. This article originally appeared on Huskies Wire: Jedd Fisch expects SEC transfer DT to contribute immediately in 20260 Comments 0 Shares 67 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMChiefs training camp notebook Day 9: Kahlil Benson plays right guardST JOSEPH, MISSOURI - JULY 25: Josh Thompson #62, Pete Nygra #50 and Kahlil Benson #70 walk toward the practice field during Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp at Missouri Western State University on July 25, 2026 in St Joseph, Missouri. (Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesThe ninth practice of Kansas City Chiefs training camp was back to full pads, with the team working plenty of run game and full-team work. It is the second-to-last practice before a rest day on Sunday.Arrowhead Pride analyst Caleb James and I watched practice together; I recommend scanning Calebs timelines on X for all the observations and clips he got out of Fridays practice.Heres everything to know from the work done by the Chiefs on the field:Attendance reportHead coach Andy Reid spoke to the media at the podium after practice. Check out our injury update on the site from earlier.Kahlil Benson moves inside to right guardStarting right guard Trey Smith was the most notable absence from camp on Friday, mainly because the hip injury was a surprise as the team took the field. When the starting offensive line took form, it still featured rookie Kahlil Benson. This time, he played in Smiths place at right guard and veteran Jaylon Moore manned right tackle for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. After spending what seems to be the entirety of the offseason playing right tackle, Benson was back inside at right guard, a position he accumulated nearly 1,000 collegiate snaps at between his time at Indiana and Colorado, according to Pro Football Focus. That said, he hasnt played the position since 2024, so settling back in featured a few lost reps to defensive tackles Chris Jones and rookie Peter Woods in strong, dominating fashion.Peter. Woods. pic.twitter.com/UBHgDKoorK Ron Kopp Jr (@RonOnChiefs) August 7, 2026On this rep against Woods, offensive line evaluator Brandon Thorn of Bleacher Report shared his thoughts on why Benson lost in a post on X.70 a tick late off the ball and it was curtains. Snap timing in the trenches >>>The note aligned with Reids thoughts on Bensons day, sharing them with local media after practice.I thought he did okay; there were a couple of hiccups in there, Reid said at the podium. Things move a little bit faster when youre inside everything jumps on you quickly. With the Chiefs defensive line looking like a strong unit for defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo to deploy in creative ways, it becomes an even stronger challenge for Benson. When you go against Spags, youre going to get a lot of different flavors, and you have to be able to make those decisions right now in an area thats faster than the tackle position, Reid explained. I thought he held his own physically, for sure, and there are a couple of things he has to pick up from there. My thought on the move: The Chiefs could be signaling that Benson is one of the teams best five offensive linemen. If Reid values having as many of his best on the field at a time, it makes sense that Benson shifts inside with a veteran offensive tackle in the wings to fill in on the edge instead of keeping Benson at right tackle and having an existing reserve inside step up.Patrick Mahomes working on his mobilityOn one particular play in a full-team period, the Chiefs starting defense blitzed Mahomes, but the playmaking quarterback broke contain to the right and looked to make a play with his legs past the line of scrimmage.Pat breaks containment on a blitz rolling right, starts trying to make a play and dodging defendersWe get it Pat, youre feeling good, maybe just throw the ball please Ron Kopp Jr (@RonOnChiefs) August 7, 2026By the end of the play, Mahomes was on the ground, and my stomach had dropped, but he was ultimately fine.It speaks to the comfort Mahomes has in his knee, but hes also actively working to gain comfort in one of the most important aspects of playing the quarterback position, according to Reid.To play in a game, you have to have escapability, Reid emphasized to reporters. Or you cant be in there; you cant play that position and be a target; you have to have some mobility back there. So he works on that. If its not there down the field, he takes off and runs. Every time he does it, it builds a little bit more confidence in the leg.Brashard Smith moving up the depth chartAfter being selected in the seventh round of last years draft, coached up by a staff that is no longer with the Chiefs after his rookie year, Smith has earned a good number of snaps with the starting offense in camp this year. Its clear that the focus for Smith is on pass protection. Reid believes he has taken positive steps in that direction as camp has progressed.Protection for the young guys is the big thing, Reid began. So weve been putting him in position there where you have to know the rules, you have to be able to step up physically and hold onto it; he has done a nice job with that. With that, he has gotten more reps. We know he can run the ball, we know he can catch the ball, but that other part is a big part. The more reps he gets at it, the better he has gotten. At the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine, Smith weighed in at 194 pounds. It has likely been a point of emphasis for Smith to gain weight as he has begun his professional career. Reid sees good progress there, too.He looks a little bit bigger; he was skinny last year, Reid said. But it looks like he has put some good weight on.The Chiefs will be back on the practice field in pads on Saturday morning, starting at 9:15 a.m.0 Comments 0 Shares 71 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFantasy Football Draft Targets and Fades: Scott Pianowski reveals his top picks and players to avoid at each positionThis is an excerpt from the 150+ page draft playbook that's part of the Yahoo Fantasy Ultra subscription, Scott Pianowski offers quick-hitting blurbs on his biggest fades this draft season.Fantasy Ultra features several top-notch tools including a draft strategy lab where you can test various approaches. If you're looking to up your game this season, consider Fantasy Ultra.Draft targets by position3 QBsJustin Herbert, LAC - Everything that was broken last year has been fixed, starting with OC Mike McDaniel.Dak Prescott, DAL - Likely a carnival team again (fun offense, leaky defense), and he's tied to a pair of star WRs.Jared Goff, DET - Averaging 32 TD passes and 4,551 passing yards last fours years, late ADP a gift. Indoor-heavy schedule is one of NFL's easiest.5 RBsBijan Robinson, ATL - Lucky you with an early pick; Robinson can repeat as a league-winner and just got a record-breaking deal.Jonathan Taylor, IND - Was smashing before the Daniel Jones injury; if Jones is cleared, green light on Taylor.Chase Brown, CIN - Set and forget for two straight years, plays in all packages, belongs in Round 2.Chuba Hubbard, CAR - A boring value veteran, but follow the touches and remember the 2024 return he provided.Blake Corum, LAR - Has a role no matter what, making him flex-worthy right away; one injury away from the moon.Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2026 NFL season5 WRsJustin Jefferson, MIN - Pounce if he slides to Round 2. Kyler Murray and Kevin O'Connell will fix the offense.Ladd McConkey, LAC - Last season was an excused absence; OC Mike McDaniel should be good for him.Emeka Egbuka, TB - Runway is clear for him to become the team's target hog; Mike Evans gone, Chris Godwin aging.Mike Evans, SF - Injury concerns already, but put on Earth to score touchdowns, and Kyle Shanahan knows how to scheme them up. Jalen Coker, CAR - Improved late last season and was paid accordingly, a screaming value late in drafts.3 TEsTyler Warren, IND - Similar sophomore upside to Colston Loveland, and a little cheaper when it comes to ADP.Kyle Pitts Sr., ATL - After a glorious TE2 breakout, he's reasonably priced at TE8; Falcons have a narrow target tree. Juwan Johnson, NO - Breakout season followed the new contract, but oddly ignored by managers in the early market.Draft fades by position3 QBsDrake Maye, NE - Regression likely, schedule far more difficult, depth of QB pool makes value game appealing. Jalen Hurts, PHI - Rushing production took a significant hit last season, new receivers will need development time. Patrick Mahomes II, KC - Off a major knee injury, rushing will likely regress, sports-car offense parked for two years.5 RBsChristian McCaffrey, SF - Usage overcame efficiency drop in 2025; running back is generally a young-man's game. DeVon Achane, MIA - Talent leaps off screen but supporting cast is a problem; will Malik Willis throw to his backs? Quinshon Judkins, CLE - Not special as a receiver and game script could be a weekly problem, tied to a mediocre team. Bucky Irving, TB - Efficiency tanked last season, he has a shoulder issue and two talented backs are looming behind him. RJ Harvey, DEN - Dreamy touchdown rate as a rookie is surely to regress and the backfield looks like a three-headed mess.5 WRsMalik Nabers, NYG - Market forces you to assume seamless return from ACL tear, hasn't run many reps with Jaxson Dart yet. Tetairoa McMillan, CAR - Super talent, but Jalen Coker cuts into market share and QB Bryce Young caps upside of offense. Rashee Rice, KC - Health and off-field concerns build a worrisome floor, might be miscast in the second or third round. Jameson Williams, DET - Less consistent than most name receivers; late spike could be misleading with Sam LaPorta healthy again. Carnell Tate, TEN - Sensible long-term play but Wan'Dale Robinson will likely onboard quicker, given history with OC Brian Daboll.3 TEsHarold Fannin Jr., CLE - Impact receivers could cut into his market share, and Cleveland's QB room remains a jumbled mess. Tucker Kraft, GB - No denying the monster upside, but readiness is definitely a question with return from ACL tear. Dallas Goedert, PHI - Touchdown regression is a lock off 11 last season and his YPC fell to a new low.Level up with Yahoo Fantasy Ultra Want even more advice from Scott Pianowski and the rest of the Yahoo Fantasy supre team of analysts? SPORTS.YAHOO.COMKings' Darius Acuff Jr. honors father with jersey number choiceAfter wearing the same jersey number for his basketball career, Darius Acuff Jr. will continue that trend when he takes the court next season with the Sacramento Kings.Acuff wore No. 5 throughout high school at Cass Tech in Detroit and at the IMG Academy in Florida. He also wore it as a freshman last season at Arkansas, helping lead the Razorbacks to their second straight appearance in the Sweet 16.The No. 7 overall pick has worn No. 5 because his father, Darius Sr., wore it at Eastern Kentucky during the 1998-99 season. He began training with him at a young age, and he has vowed to continue to honor him each time he takes the court."I always wore it my whole life," Acuff said last month, via the NBA on X. "Pops wore it, so ever since I was little, I've been wearing it because of him. That's my dad. He has been there my whole life. Every step of the way, he taught me everything I know about the game, so why not try to pay tribute to him?"Acuff was a consensus first-team All-American last season, averaging 23.5 points, 6.4 assists and 3.1 rebounds while shooting 44% from 3-point range. He ranked third in the country in points (845) and seventh in assists (232), both of which were single-season program records. The 19-year-old debuted with the Kings in summer league, averaging 20.8 points, 4.6 assists, 1.6 rebounds, one steal and one block while shooting 35% from the field in five games. He scored 20 or more points three times, including a 26-point performance on July 14.Acuff had the opportunity to get acquainted with several teammates last month, including Dylan Cardwell, Nique Clifford and Alex Karaban. He is expected to play a significant role for the team and enters withthe fifth-best oddsfor Rookie of the Year. This article originally appeared on Rookie Wire: Kings' Darius Acuff Jr. honors father with jersey number choice0 Comments 0 Shares 38 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMegan Rapinoe offers scathing take on transgender athlete discourse: Are you serious?Credit: A Touch More and Vox Media Podcast NetworkFormer U.S. womens national team winger Megan Rapinoe was as heralded for winning World Cups as she was for unrelenting activism. She may have retired from soccer three years ago, but shes more committed now to activism than ever. So, its only right that Rapinoe opened her premiere Why Are You Like This? podcast episode with a passionate monologue on the mistreatment of the transgender community. For context, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham ignited the latest debate around transgender athletes when she spoke out against transgender athlete participation in womens sports for this ESPN profile published July 21.Since then, multiple WNBA coaches and players have been asked to comment, including Fever All-Star Caitlin Clark and Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve. It broke contain, and this week, reporters forced the issue on the likes of tennis stars Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka.Well let Rapinoe take it from here.I dont know Sophie, so I can only project what I see about her beliefs based on her actions, Rapinoe said. Seeing a picture of her with Riley Gaines after the [Fevers game against the Minnesota Lynx] told me everything I need to know about whats happening. Riley Gaines has made it her lifes mission to exclude trans people from public life.Shes directly tied to the Heritage Foundation, the authors of Project 2025 and, now, 2026, who have now published a report that suggests that they want to repeal Title IX. The very piece of legislation that allowed athletes like Sophie and myself to compete in sports. Sophie has claimed both to love trans people and support Title IX, and this is where the accountability with having a major platform is extremely important.View this post on InstagramA post shared by Why Are You Like This? (@whyareyoulikethis)Rapinoe pivoted from Cunninghams actions and comments specifically into a larger commentary on whats wrong with the discourse overall. You can hear it even in the language being used that the root of trans exclusion is to protect young girls from men, Rapinoe said. To be clear, I would love to have that conversation, and its much needed in this country. But it frames the conversation as if were protecting young girls from men being in WNBA locker rooms. Not happening. It villainizes trans girls, as if theyre somehow magically older than their peers or are men, when, in reality, they are also young girls. These laws are excluding kids kids! from playing youth sports. If we want to have a conversation around elite sports, there are effective policies that have been in place for many years that no one noticed because they worked. So, if anybody is taking these talking points as legit or believing theyre protecting young girls in sports, I just have to ask, are you serious?Rapinoe has never shied from using her voice, but her voice should be even more prominent in discussions such as this one, as she launches Why Are You Like This? and takes the press circuit for her forthcomingRapinoe documentary. The post Megan Rapinoe offers scathing take on transgender athlete discourse: Are you serious? appeared first on Awful Announcing.0 Comments 0 Shares 94 Views 0 Reviews
