Infantino needs to build relationships with officials and politicians.In April, before the Fifa Congress in Vancouver, local authorities rejected a request for a level-four motorcade, usually reserved for heads of state or the Pope. New Zealand police said they had declined a similar request during the 2023 Women's World Cup.Alongside the cavalcade of cars and the private charter flights comes a large salary, too, three times what he first earned when elected in 2016.Infantino, who was paid about 1.3m 10 years ago, now takes home about 4m - a base salary of 2.2m plus a confirmed variable bonus payment of 1.8m.His predecessor Sepp Blatter was paid a 2.6m package for his final year as Fifa president.Infantino gets a 'per diem' too to cover expenses and living costs, worth 20,500 a year on top of his salary.As the head of the most popular sport in the world, it should be expected that there is a wage to match. Infantino would argue that by driving record revenues and funding for member associations, he has proven he is worth the salary.How Infantino grew close to TrumpInfantino's alliance with Trump seemed to have elevated his status even further.Many in world football felt that this began to come at the expense of his responsibilities in football.In May 2025, Infantino had been on a diplomatic tour of the Middle East with Trump and turned up two hours late for the Fifa Congress in Paraguay.Uefa accused Infantino of prioritising "private political interests" and staged a walk-out.There was also the Fifa Peace Prize, awarded to Trump weeks before the US invaded Venezuela to depose president Nicolas Maduro and launched air attacks on Iran. Despite criticism, the Fifa ethics committee did not respond to complaints about Infantino's political neutrality over the prize. At the start of the year, Infantino made a surprise appearance at the inaugural meeting of Trump's Board of Peace, set up to oversee the reconstruction of Gaza.The International Olympic Committee, of which Infantino is an invited member, said its rules on political neutrality had not been breached.However, many felt he had positioned himself too close to the US president. Before the 2026 World Cup, Infantino tried to head off at the pass any queries about high ticket prices and supporters' visas.But, at the news conference before the World Cup, his reply of "just, you know, chill, relax" about Somali referee Omar Artan, who had been denied entry to the USA at Miami Airport, sparked concern.By issuing statements through Fifa channels, Infantino can seek to shape the narrative.The Fifa statement issued on Wednesday offered some contrition. But there was a rebuke, too.It gave Infantino the chance to bite back, saying Fifa would "no longer tolerate any attacks on its integrity, good governance and due process".Critics feel case against Infantino is too strong to ignoreThe allure of the role is great, underscored by the fact there have been just four permanent Fifa presidents since Stanley Rous was elected in 1961.Outside of Europe, the record revenues achieved by Infantino have funded the football operations of many countries. Fifa cannot be run as an autocratic project any longer, claim his critics - many of them within European football.Expanding the World Cup was in Infantino's election manifesto, and an increase to 64 teams for 2030 seems highly likely if he gets a fourth term. There was also the expanded summer Club World Cup. The trophy is engraved with a personal tribute - "Inspired by the Fifa president Gianni Infantino".The unique allocation of the next two men's World Cups helped ensure Saudi Arabia, another close ally of Infantino, would get the 2034 event. The draw for this summer's World Cup was a long, lavish and outlandish affair. Trump was front and centre, as was Infantino. Many supporters felt the price of tickets was too high, while some who were prepared to pay for them were denied visas. Fifa opted to use a secondary market place with uncapped prices and a 30% share on each ticket sold. Critics said profit had become more important than the supporter experience, with the attorneys general of New York and New Jersey subpoenaing Fifa to answer questions about its ticketing practices. Even with all these controversies, Infantino was expected to be re-elected, such was his support around the world in many member associations. Throughout the offseason and the first week of training camp, the right guard spot had been manned solely by Jackson Powers-Johnson. The injuries won't stop coming for the Denver Broncos.Almost one year after he ruptured his Achilles on Aug. 8 in 2025, defensive lineman Matt Henningsen was carted off the field during Friday's practice. The severity of Henningsen's injury is not yet known, but it's brutal to see him carted off after working his way back from last summer's injury.Toward the end of practice, wide receiver Marvin Mims tossed his helmet after pulling up on a deep route. In 2025, Beane signed Greg Rousseau, Khalil Shakir, Christian Benford, Terrel Bernard, and James Cook to second contracts, and now Torrence enters that growing list of homegrown talents secured long term by the organization. Lets take a full scale look at how the deals have ultimately fared to create a barometer of sorts for Beane and Co. on these financial decisions. Due to my love of the NFL Draft, Ill run through each player based on draft year. And Ill label each outcome as successful, OK, and bad. Josh Allen No lengthy description needed, and hes gotten multiple long-term deals in Buffalo. Hes worth every penny. And then some.Verdict: SuccessfulTaron Johnson Johnsons initial extension in Buffalo was a three-year, $24 million pact in October 2021, and the super pesky nickel corner rewarded the Bills with durable play that culminated in a second-team All-Pro distinction in 2023. The more recent three-year, $30M extension with $17.8M guaranteed wasnt nearly as fruitful, but Beanes original decision to lock up Johnson in 2021 was very prudent. Verdict: SuccessfulEd OliverBecause Oliver was a first-round pick, the Bills had time to take a little longer with this decision thanks to the fifth-year option being secured the year before. However, after his fourth NFL season, the defensive tackle signed a four-year, $68M with $45M in total guarantees, a deal on which hes still playing. When healthy, Oliver has become one of the Bills best defensive players, even if hes never reached true routine game-wrecker status. Its not a slam dunk of a verdict here, but Im going with this as a successful extension, as the $24.5M guaranteed at signing in Olivers extension now ranks as the 22nd-most among defensive tackles. Verdict: SuccessfulDawson Knox Knox signed a four-year, $53.6M extension in early September 2022 after a nine-touchdown third season with the Bills. His 49 receptions during the regular season in 2021 remain a career high. While Knox has become a consummate three-down pro at tight end, a fantastic mentor for Dalton Kincaid, and one of the key camaraderie pieces on the team, the $31M in total guarantees he received in the initial extension wouldve ranked fifth among all tight ends today (!) had he not agreed to renegotiate his deal after 2024. The three year, $20M extension Knox signed in 2026 is more commensurate with his production. Verdict: OK / BadGreg Rousseau While the $80M total price tag on the four-year Rousseau extension may have seemed lofty, one year later his $38.7M fully-guaranteed-at-signing figure is now the 13th-highest among edge rushers. Rousseau has been developed very well albeit not unbelievably by the Bills since he was the clubs first-round pick in 2021 after opting out of his final season at the University of Miami due to COVID and entering the league at 21 years old. Has he regularly been a menace? Not really. Hes another consummate three-down player from the McDermott era whos absolutely a good player and at times a great player but has yet to become a genuine star or superstar. Verdict: Successful / OKSpencer BrownBrown signed his September 2024 contract worth a grand total of $72M across four new years. And while that $72M is still the sixth-most among right tackles, the $19.8M guaranteed at signing is 17th-highest at the position. Brown has become one of the best young right tackles in the NFL and core piece of Buffalos sturdy offensive line. This is an extension Beane is likely thrilled he got ahead of.Verdict: SuccessJames CookSpeaking of that, given what weve seen recently with new money for Bijan Robinson, Jonathan Taylor, and Jahmyr Gibbs, the Bills front office probably cant be more relieved the Cook extension got done when it did, in August 2025. The $15.2M Cook received in his four-year, $46M deal is now the 17th-highest among running backs. Robinson, Taylor, and Gibbs got $37.5M, $19.3M, and $17.8M fully guaranteed at signing respectively. Oh yeah, and Cook led the NFL in rushing in 2026 and has yet to reached 1,000 career touches in the NFL. Verdict: SuccessTerrel Bernard Ill keep this one short because, when healthy, Bernard has been a quarterback of the defense and one of the better, splash-play creating coverage linebackers in football. His 2025 was plagued by injury, as has sizable chunks of the past few seasons. Its not necessarily fair to Beane nor Bernard, but that is the nature of the beast in the NFL. The four-year, $42M deal Bernard signed in 2025 featured $14.1M guaranteed at signing, which is the 24th-most at the position. Its hardly an expensive deal, relatively speaking. If Bernard can stay healthy in 2026, this verdict could jump all the way to the successful label.Verdict: BadKhalil Shakir Ive loved Shakir since his time as a prospect coming out of Boise State, and hes developed into an elite-level YAC receiver with reliable hands as a professional. Shakirs four-year, $60.2M extension seems sizable, yet the $18.1M guaranteed at signing is now the 43rd-highest (!) among all receivers. Massive win here. Verdict: SuccessfulChristian BenfordBenford deserves more love as one of the better outside cornerbacks in football, and Beane likely loves he got ahead of the eruption at the cornerback market.Benfords four-year, $69M deal includes a mere $18.8M fully guaranteed, which is now the 31st-most at the cornerback spot. Crazy, right? And Benford will only turn 26 in September. Hes not nearly as flashy as other top corners, doesnt have an early-round draft pedigree, and didnt play at a Power 4 school. But he has seven interceptions and 29 pass breakups in the regular season in his first four years in the NFL and is a tackling machine on the outside.Verdict: SuccessfulTotal TallySuccesful: 7Succesful / OK: 1 OK / Bad: 1Bad: 1What do you think about Beanes track record of contract extensions?
