There will be a completely different feel to the Enzo Maresca era at Manchester City
There will be a completely different feel to the Enzo Maresca era at Manchester CityAfter two preseason friendlies, it is beginning to become apparent that a Manchester City team managed by Enzo Maresca is a different beast to the one that Pep Guardiola created. There are similarities, given that Maresca does want his team to play possession-based football like Guardiola. However, the way that Maresca utilises his wingers, his full-backs and wants his team to press is different to Guardiola. Also, Maresca seems likely to have an opportunity to shape his own Manchester City squad. City have lost several key leaders and it also seems highly likely that Rodri will leave City. Enzo Maresca will now have the opportunity to install his own leaders for his team.A host of important figures on the pitch have left, or are likely to leave, Manchester City.Manchester City have already seen Pep Guardiola, Bernardo Silva, John Stones, and Nathan Ake depart the club this summer. It now looks like Rodri will also depart the Etihad this summer. Fabrizio Romano has reported that Barcelona are increasingly confident of signing Rodri before the summer transfer window closes. Furthermore, Romano reports that Rodri has respectfully informed Manchester City of his intention to return to Spain. Lastly, Romano reports that Barcelona will submit an improved offer for Rodri after seeing their opening bid for the Ballon dOr-winning midfielder rejected. With who has already left Manchester City and it seemingly only a matter of time before Rodri departs the club there will be a leadership void in Enzo Marescas squad. The departures of Stones, Ake and Bernardo Silva, plus Pep Guardiolas departure have created this situation. Rodris likely move to Barcelona creates a further hole in Citys leadership situation. However, there is an opportunity for other players to now step up and fill a sizable void in Marescas squad. Also, this scenario does give Enzo Maresca a chance to find the leaders that he feels can lead the way in Manchester Citys new era.Enzo Maresca will have the opportunity to shape his squad with a fresh batch of leaders. It would seem that Erling Haaland and Ruben Dias are the favourites to be Manchester Citys next captain. The pair were part of Citys captaincy group last season alongside Bernardo Silva and Rodri. However, Enzo Maresca has had an opportunity to look at other players and the leadership traits they possess during Manchester Citys preseason tour of Asia.Phil Foden has stated his goal to step up into Manchester Citys leadership group. Marc Guehi, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Matheus Nunes and Josko Gvardiol could all earn their way into such a position. At times last season, Rayan Cherki displayed leadership traits on the pitch, directing proceedings both in and out of possession. All of these players will have an opportunity to show Enzo Maresca they have what it takes otbbe leaders alongside Ruben Dias and Erling Haaland. The challenge is now in front of those players, and others, to earn that opportunity and help lead Manchester Citys new era.Everything does feel new at Manchester City. Club legends and a host of experience have left the club this summer with the potential of another leader in Rodri to follow. These departures provide other players the opportunity to fill the leadership void. Enzo Maresca will also find his leadership group throughout Manchester Citys preseason. This will create an entirely new dynamic at the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders, which will carry them into the 2026-27 season and beyond.

IRE vs AFG 2nd ODI: Rashid Khan's six-for helps Afghanistan crush Ireland by 92 runs
Rashid Khan produced a sensational six-wicket haul as Afghanistan thrashed Ireland by 92 runs in the second ODI at Bready Cricket Club on Friday, taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. After the opening ODI was abandoned without a toss due to rain, the second game was also delayed by inclement weather and eventually reduced to 47 overs per side. Afghanistan, led by Ibrahim Zadran, posted 299 for 8 before Rashid ripped through Ireland's batting line-up, bowling them out for 207 in 33.4 overs.Ibrahim, Atal lay foundation for AfghanistanAsked to bat first in overcast conditions, Afghanistan initially found it difficult against Ireland's new-ball movement. Mark Adair opened with a maiden, but Jai Moondra struggled to contain Rahmanullah Gurbaz, conceding four boundaries in his first two overs.Gurbaz briefly took Moondra apart with a six and a four in the left-arm seamer's third over, but the bowler had the last laugh when the opener attempted another big shot and holed out.Sediqullah Atal kept the scoring moving, while Ibrahim initially played a more measured innings. Afghanistan reached 65 for 1 before the pair took control, putting together a 116-run partnership.Ibrahim shifted gears and brought up his half-century from 52 balls. Atal's dismissal in the 25th over ended the stand, but Ibrahim continued to anchor the innings. The Afghanistan captain then added 43 with Rahmat Shah before both fell within two overs. Another 43-run partnership between Azmatullah Omarzai and Darwish Rasooli kept Afghanistan on course, while Hashmatullah Shahidi provided a late flourish with a 21-ball 36, including four boundaries in the final two overs.Despite losing three wickets for 21 runs late on, Afghanistan finished with a formidable 299 for 8.Rashid sparks Ireland collapseIreland made a confident start in the chase, reaching 65 for 1 despite losing Paul Stirling early.Andy Balbirnie looked fluent, while Cade Carmichael, playing only his fourth ODI, launched an aggressive counterattack. Carmichael smashed Saleem Safi for 21 runs in the 14th over and went on to bring up his maiden ODI fifty from 44 balls. But Afghanistan's spinners soon changed the game.Rashid struck twice in quick succession to remove Balbirnie and Harry Tector, leaving Ireland in need of a substantial partnership. Carmichael and Lorcan Tucker attempted to rebuild, but their 38-run stand ended when Tucker was run out after losing track of the ball during an LBW appeal.Carmichael followed in the next over for 62, leaving Ireland at 152 for 5.Ben Calitz and Curtis Campher briefly threatened to revive the chase, smashing 41 runs in three overs, including five fours and two sixes. Rashid ended that assault by dismissing Calitz, triggering a stunning collapse.Ireland lost their final four wickets for just nine runs, with Rashid claiming three of them to complete remarkable figures of 6-34.The third ODI will be played on Monday, August 10, at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast.Brief Scores: Afghanistan 299/8 in 47 overs (Ibrahim Zadran 84, Sediqullah Atal 45; Mark Adair 2-40, Jay Moondra 2-78) beat Ireland 207 all-out in 33.4 overs (Cade Carmichael 62, Andy Balbirnie 36; Rashid Khan 6-34) by 92 runs.

Newcastle say they didnt want to sell Guimaraes, as Arsenal move looms
Newcastle United did not want to sell captain Bruno Guimaraes, sporting director Ross Wilson has said, after reports linked the Brazil midfielder with a move to Arsenal.British media reported on Wednesday that Arsenal had agreed a deal worth 75 million pounds ($101m) for the 28-year-old. Neither club has confirmed the reported transfer. We didnt want to sell Bruno. It wasnt in the plan to sell Bruno. None of us or ownership wanted to sell Bruno, Wilson told reporters at Newcastles preseason training camp in Spain.Hes our captain, he was very important to us, and the debate over his price its a world-record fee for a player of his age. What we had to weigh up was, very respectfully from Bruno with his behaviour towards us, very emotionally as well, effectively told us he wanted to leave and move on.Guimaraes, who joined Newcastle from French side Olympique Lyonnais in January 2022, has made 195 appearances in all competitions and scored 31 goals for the Premier League club.He captained Newcastle to League Cup glory in 2025, ending the clubs long wait for domestic silverware.Theres no part in saying (the transfer) was part of our strategy and was in our thinking this summer it wasnt. But we have got to be flexible and react to things that happen, Wilson said.It might have been in our plan to sign one player, but we didnt get him so we move on to another. We can only be honest about that.Guimaraess exit would be another setback for Newcastle following the departures of Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and manager Eddie Howe.Newcastle begin their Premier League campaign against Liverpool on August 23.

    Arsenal helped by Tottenham rejection
Arsenal helped by Tottenham rejectionCristian Romero was reportedly considered as William Saliba cover, only for Spurs to shut the door before talks could develop.Photo by Alex Pantling/Getty ImagesArsenal have reportedly explored a move for Cristian Romero, but Tottenham Hotspurs refusal to even entertain the idea may have saved the Gunners from making one of the more stupid signings of the summer.Arsenals interest emerged on Thursday when James McNicholas, writing for The Athletic, reported that the Gunners were among the clubs monitoring Tottenhams captain. At the time, Spurs were said to be unaware of Arsenals interest, suggesting any contact had come through intermediaries.Reports now indicate Tottenham have categorically rejected any prospect of selling Romero to their north London rivals, with the club instead prepared to consider offers from abroad.Given Arsenals search for defensive reinforcements following William Salibas back injury, it is understandable that the club are assessing a wide range of options.Even so, Romero always looked like an unusual fit, to put it kindly.Photo by Alex Pantling/Getty ImagesThe Argentina international has established himself as one of the Premier Leagues most combative defenders, and Arsenals recent signing of Bruno Guimaraes suggests Mikel Arteta wants to add even more edge to a side that already claimed the Premier League title last season, but it also has to come with a brain attached.Romeros disciplinary record and reckless approach have often overshadowed his undoubted ability, and is part of the reason Spurs want rid of him.Why would Arsenal be open to taking a risk with him? Its baffling.Tottenhams refusal to do business with Arsenal will hopefully, ultimately, prove beneficial for the Gunners, allowing them to focus on targets who better fit the profile they require and arent a total liability.Photo by Carl Recine/Getty ImagesRomeros future appears more likely to lie outside England.Atltico Madrid and Inter Milan remain interested, although Inters pursuit has stalled after the Italian club reportedly failed to agree personal terms despite reaching a verbal agreement over a fee believed to be around 40 million.According to Fabrizio Romano, Atltico are now in direct club-to-club talks with Tottenham and currently lead the race for the defender.Romano also confirmed Arsenal made enquiries, while adding that Inter first need players to leave before they can revive their interest.Arsenals need for another defender has not changed, but Romero increasingly looks like a name they can thankfully cross off the shortlist.Sometimes the best transfer is the one that never happens.Photo by Carl Recine/Getty Images

Barcelona will listen to offers for 20-year-old La Masia defensive talent – report
Barcelona will listen to offers for 20-year-old La Masia defensive talent reportThe exit operations are in full swing at FC Barcelona. Ronald Araujo is on the verge of completing his loan move to Liverpool, while Marc Casado could be on his way to Saudi Arabia, having been left out of the squad travelling to Italy for the friendlies against Udinese and Nottingham Forest. Now, according to journalist Matteo Moretto, another academy graduate could be on his way out of Barcelona in the coming days.Barcelona open to offers for Hector FortIndeed, as per the report, Barcelona are ready to listen to offers for talented right-back Hector Fort this summer. The 20-year-old La Masia product spent the last season on loan at Elche, where he showed promise despite enduring an injury-riddled campaign.Hector Fort during his time at Elche. (Photo by Fran Santiago/Getty Images)Having returned to Bara this summer, the young full-back has been working hard in pre-season, hoping to convince manager Hansi Flick and remain at the club for the upcoming season. However, it appears that the La Liga champions have decided to part ways with the academy graduate.Competition for placesAs things stand, Barcelona have plenty of options in the right-back position. Jules Kounde will continue to be a starter while Eric Garcia will push for a spot after impressing in the role last season.Added to the equation is the emergence of Xavi Espart, who made his first-team breakthrough last season and has continued to impress Flick and his coaching staff during the pre-season this summer.Xavi Espart continues to impress. (Photo by Aitor Alcalde/Getty Images)Given the situation, Fort has little to no chance of making inroads into the first-team setup at Barcelona. As such, the 20-year-old starlet will be offloaded by the Blaugrana, with the club now willing to listen to offers for the promising La Masia graduate. No shortage of interestIf he is indeed placed on the exit ramp, there is unlikely to be a shortage of suitors for Fort this summer. As previously reported, the youngster has been courting interest from several clubs in Spain and abroad.Borussia Dortmund, for one, also explored the possibility of a move for the right-back while negotiating the transfer of Karim Adeyemi to Bara. What now remains to be seen is whether Barcelona opt to sell him permanently with a buyback clause and future sell-on percentage or only agree to a loan departure.

Incredible 140m star was ready to join Liverpool but deal collapsed
Incredible 140m star was ready to join Liverpool but deal collapsedOne of the biggest talents in world football was ready to join Liverpool this summer. However, the deal collapsed.Liverpool went into this summer transfer window with a plan. They wanted a new winger and were ready to spend big on him. After all, the squad lacked production from wide areas last season and then lost Mohamed Salah on a free transfer. Victor Munoz has joined from Osasuna but he's not going to make up the difference on his own - especially as he doesn't actually play on Salah's side. The big name Liverpool wanted was Yan Diomande, as reported at the time by absolutely everyone. The Reds, at one stage, looked like favourites to sign him after a brilliant debut campaign with RB Leipzig. And then things turned. Paris Saint-Germain got involved and turned Diomande's head, with him looking destined to move there. Only, Real Madrid got involved and turned Diomande's head, and he did move there.Bet 10, Get 30 in Free BetsOpen an account and place a qualifying bet of 10 at min odds of 1/5 (1.2) or greater.18+New UK/ROI customers. GambleAware.org30 FREECLAIM NOWLos Blancos have completed the deal at 140m, per the BBC, far above what Liverpool were reportedly offering. So what happened? The Athletic have explained all. They've claimed that Liverpool did indeed lead the race at one stage and Diomande was ready to join them. Then two things happened.Firstly, Liverpool low-balled Leipzig with their offer, putting up under 100m. It was rejected, naturally, and the Reds dallied a bit on what to do next - though, with good reason.Arne Slot lost his job as head coach and was replaced by Andoni Iraola, shifting things at Anfield. That had an extra effect, though, as it put off Diomande, who now believed that Liverpool were heading into a transitional season.PSG, at the time, offered him the opportunity to challenge for trophies right away. Real Madrid then did the same and were willing to pay 140m to get it done.Liverpool were never going that high but who knows? A little higher with their initial offer and perhaps Diomande would have signed for the club before anyone else even got involved.
