Quillan Salkilld leveled up last night (Sat., Aug. 8, 2026) at UFC Vegas 120 LIVE on Paramount+ from inside the revamped Meta Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, as the rising contender put a dominant stop to lightweight veteran Mateusz Gamrot with a main event first-round submission (rear-naked choke).This was a big spot for both fighters, but especially Salkilld as this was his first UFC headliner. Many thought the 26-year-old Australian had the skills to keep climbing the lightweight ranks, but once Salkilld was pitted up against Gamrot things quickly became real. It was up to Salkilld to prove hes got the chops to fight the best 155-pound fighters in the world.Salkilled did exactly that as he clipped Gamrot early into the first round with a short left hook. That forced Gamrot to quickly go to his wrestling and try to drag Salkilld to the ground. To Gamrots surprise, Salkilld showcased an impressive ground game as he reversed multiple positions and was able to get back to his feet.Moments later, it was Salkilld who changed levels and scored a takedown on Gamrot. It was a shock to Gamrot since hes the one usually landing on top. Salkilld eventually work his way to Gamrots back and locked in the rear-naked choke. Another straight punch from Salkilld rocked Gamrot and forced him to dive for a leg trying for the takedown.Salkilld countered quickly but he couldnt quite break Gamrots grip as the Polish lightweight dove for an ankle lock on the ground. Gamrot defended well but he was still stuck with Salkilld on his back, searching for the rear-naked choke.The choke wasnt directly under the chin but the pressure was so immense that Gamrot had no choice but to tap out as Salkilld scored another impressive victory as he continues climbing up the lightweight ranks.Many of the top fighters at 155 pounds are already booked or fought just recently so its tough to say who Salkilld might get next but he appears ready for the best of the best from the division whenever he competes again.I dont give a f*ck, Salkilld responded when asked who he wants next. As long as its in the top five. I think I deserve someone in the top five or close to it.

(AP) Buffalo Bills first-year coach Joe Brady used the teams first practice in its new $2.1 billion stadium to enjoy a brief father-son moment on Saturday night.With fans beginning to file in, and rock music blaring over the state-of-the-art sound system, Brady emerged from the tunnel holding his 3-year-old son Jordan in his arm while enjoying a walk around the sideline.As much as the first-year coach wanted to use the practice to simulate a game-day routine and get accustomed to the teams new surroundings, Brady couldnt help but work family into the equation.Those are the moments that I made sure I tried to take in, Brady said. So when I say hey, Im focused, let me just take a second to enjoy a special moment, because once the season goes, you know those are going to be few and far between.Soon after, it was back to football for Brady, who at 36 is the NFLs youngest coach entering this season, and also for a Bills team that officially made the move across the street into its new digs.The first practice at Highmark Stadium featured a crowd of at least 30,000, a couple of Josh Allen touchdown passes, a brief but heavy downpour, and closed with a fireworks show.Buffalo will get more chances to break in the new facility before hosting Detroit in its regular-season home opener on Sept. 17. The Bills will also host two preseason games, starting with a meeting against Carolina on Aug. 15.Its awesome. I know everybody loved The Ralph and what was over there across the street, right tackle Spencer Brown said, referring to the Bills former home, also called Highmark. The old home was dubbed The Ralph in honor of franchise founder Ralph Wilson.But this is a whole new atmosphere and its awesome to call it home. And I look forward to seeing how it is on a normal game day, Brown added. It seems like the crowds more on top of you. And I imagine on third down it will be rocking.With a capacity of just over 60,000, the new stadium has 12,000 fewer seats than the Bills old home. And yet the vertical configuration of the new stadium, with levels stacked overtop one another, brings the fans closer to the action and designed to contain the noise.Its intimidating, season ticket-holder Tom Beecher said, from his first-row seat at the 15-yard-line. Its going to be interesting when it really gets rocking in here. Its less people, but I feel like its going to be louder. It feels like more.The loudest cheers were devoted to Allen, of course. They first rose when Allen was pictured on the video-screen boards at each of the stadium during the pre-practice stretching period.Allen looked up, smiled and provided a thumbs up.Later, he drew even louder cheers for completing would-be touchdown passes to DJ Moore and then Khalil Shakir.Place-kicker Tyler Bass gave the new stadium a thumbs-up for its design and aesthetics.First impressions, man, its amazing. I think its a work of art, honestly. Its very easy on the eye, very symmetrical, Bass said.He also credited the design features, including a curved overhang, in working to limit the effects of the wind. Of all the new head football coaches in New Mexicos high school ranks, no one is going to be under closer scrutiny this year than Stephen Johnston.Which, for a former Artesia Bulldog player and coach, is routine.Johnston, 39, changed jobs in the offseason, leaving Manzano for Los Lunas. And this is the highest profile new hire among the states coaching ranks for the 2026 season.His two predecessors, Jeremy Maupin and Greg Henington, combined to take Los Lunas to three state championship games, all in Class 5A.After a handful of seasons in 6A, the Tigers have returned to 5A, and Johnston will make his Los Lunas debut Aug. 21 at Mayfield.I think there are certainly high expectations, Johnston said. Its been expressed by a lot of folks around here. And I actually kind of appreciate that.Los Lunas went to three straight title games, 2018-19 and 2021 (there was no 2020 season). The Tigers were undefeated in 2021 under Henington, whose contract was not renewed following last season, when Los Lunas fell in the state quarterfinals to Las Cruces.And this change atop the program has lingered a bit around the village during the offseason.Hes in a little different place than I was when I went over there, said Maupin, now Artesias head coach. He and Johnston were teammates at Artesia. I dont think everyone wanted Henington gone; a lot of kids and parents really liked Greg.Henington landed a plum role as an assistant coach with defending Class 6A champion Cleveland following the messy split with Los Lunas.All of which adds up to a job for Johnston that will have many eyeballs squarely focused on it during the next several months.At Manzano, expectations were very low, Johnston said candidly of the early time at Manzano when he first got that job and the Monarch program was struggling. Expectations here I think thats what makes it fun a little bit, that the community has high expectations.Los Lunas (62-22 over the last seven full seasons) most definitely should be a major piece in the 5A puzzle this year, as the Tigers look to challenge the two strongholds in this division, Artesia and Roswell. Those two fierce rivals have met in each of the the last three 5A title contests.Johnston said Los Lunas is equipped to challenge anyone and everyone.Players coming up have high expectations, he said. We get to hold them to a high level of accountability. We can compete with anybody in our class and we can beat anybody in our class.Class 5A is once again divided into two large districts, but Los Lunas northern league looks different than it did a year ago.Cibola, Piedra Vista, Los Alamos, Miyamura, Highland, Capital and Santa Fe are the other seven teams in District 1-5A. Cibola, PV and Santa Fe, like Los Lunas, were 6A members the last few years.And even if the Tigers, whose numbers are robust with about 125 players out for football, have left the likes of La Cueva, Cleveland and Las Cruces behind, the elite 5A programs present their own mountainous challenges. Los Lunas, after facing Mayfield, visits Rio Rancho and then plays host to Goddard before it segues into league play.Johnston knows plenty about the demands of wearing Artesia orange, where he played from 2002-04, and where he later coached from 2010-21. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Detroit Tigers right-hander Jackson Jobe had some nerves and some good stuff in his first big league outing in more than 14 months.Returning to the majors after having Tommy John surgery last year, Jobe uncorked a 100-mph fastball on a 3-2 pitch past to strike out San Francisco leadoff hitter Bryce Eldridge on Saturday.That was the first of four strikeouts for Jobe, who limited the Giants to one hit in five shutout innings as Detroit rolled to an 8-0 victory.The 24-year-old Jobe had made four rehab starts in the minors over the past month, and his performance Saturday was particularly gratifying.I had some good nerves, Jobe said. I was just excited to come in (and) show everyone what the past 14 months were for and how hard I worked. Yeah, its a good feeling.The Tigers first-round pick, third overall, in 2021, Jobe hadnt pitched in the majors since a start against the Giants in a 4-3 win in Detroit on May 28, 2025.On Saturday, he allowed only one walk (to Drew Cavanaugh in the third) and a single by Willy Adames with one out in the fourth. Jobe threw 71 pitches, 46 for strikes.Detroit manager A.J. Hinch was pleased with what he saw.Almost a perfect outing when it comes to what we were trying to accomplish, Hinch said. It was a big step for him to get back to this level. He had electrifying stuff.Jobe went 4-1 with a 4.22 ERA as a rookie last year. He believes he has used his rehabilitation period to improve in multiple ways.I do feel very different, Jobe said. Im definitely stronger physically.
