SPORTS.YAHOO.COMOn this Day, 35 years ago Celtic appointed Liam Brady as our managerOn this Day, 35 years ago Celtic appointed Liam Brady as our manager35 years ago today (10 August 1991), Liam Bradys time as Celtic boss got properly underway. It was an exciting introduction that seemed to echo his on-field footballing abilities, giving the promise of a very bright futureLiam Brady Celtic football manager August 1991. Photo The Celtic WikiLiam Bradys time at Celtic is remembered for a lack of successSadly, these early hopes were to fade, and Bradys time in charge in Glasgows east end is remembered for a lack of success, one that was overshadowed by off-field events at Celtic Park.As a footballer, Liam Brady was an outstanding talent. He was born 13 February 1956 in Dublin, Ireland, into a family deeply involved in football. Several of his relatives had played at senior level for Irish clubs and the national team.Brady grew up in a football focused environment and joined St. Kevins Boys before moving to London at age 15. He made his Arsenal debut in 1973, becoming known for his technical skill, particularly his insightful passing abilities. He won the 1979 FA Cup with Arsenal and was twice named the clubs Player of the Season. In 1980, he transferred to Juventus, winning two Serie A titles, and later played for Sampdoria, Inter, Ascoli, and West Ham United.Liam Brady in action for The Republic of Ireland. Photo The Celtic WikiLiam Brady won 72 caps for the Republic of IrelandAs well as starring at club level, Brady also became a popular member of the Republic of Ireland team, earning 72 caps between 1974 and 1990.When he retired in 1990, Brady himself has written that going into management was never something he expected to do, planning instead to become a businessman.Celtic were struggling to complete with a financially doped-up RangersBy the early 1990s, Celtic were struggling to complete with a financially doped-up Rangers. But the Bhoys problems were more deep rooted than this; in 1990 and 1991, they were not simply behind Rangers and in fact finished in fifth place in one of those seasons. These struggles saw the end of club legend Billy McNeills second spell in charge at the club. The manner of his dismissal caused anger amongst the supporters, even for those that had wanted him removed from the post. Now that Cesar had left the building, a replacement was needed, one who would be capable of lifting the entire club. The process to choose a new manager was a strange one.Wrong man at the wrong time Liam Brady as Celtic manager. Photo The Celtic WikiBrady threw his hat into the ring to replace Billy McNeillUnlike most times when a club such as Celtic approaches those they are interesting in appointing, there was instead an open interview process, with people being allowed to apply for the job. Despite his earlier reservations, Brady threw his hat into the ring.Four candidates were interviewed and it seemed that the real competition for the job was between two Dubliners; Brady and Frank Stapleton, who had been teammates at both Arsenal and the Republic of Ireland. When the decision was made on 19 June 1991 it was Liam Brady who was seen as the man to steer the good ship Celtic. But there were already concerns being expressed. In the first place, this 1991 appointment more than a century after Celtics maiden game was the first time that the man in charge had not played for Celtic. So far, there had been only six managers: Willie Maley, Jimmy McStay, Jimmy McGrory, Jock Stein, Billy McNeill on two occasion and David Hay.Unfortunately, this surprisingly low number was about to change. After having six managers in 103 years, Celtic were about to have six more in the remainder of the 1990s!UEFA Cup. FC Cologne v Celtic, 15 09 1992 2-0 team manager Liam Brady Celtic in Background Jrg Berger Cologne HM. Photo IMAGOStill, Brady not playing for the club was not truly a significant problem. What did concern supporters was his complete lack of management experience. As much as he had been a wonderful player, Brady had not spent any time in a coaching or managerial role that would have prepared him for the expectations of the Celtic Park hot seat. Troubled times lay ahead.Although less than Rangers were spending, Brady was financially backed with some relatively significant signings.Tony Cascarino and Gary Gillespie were signedThe most notable of these was Tony Cascarino at a fee of 1.1 million, but also arriving in the G40 postcode was Gary Gillespie, a highly decorated player with Liverpool as well as fellow defender Tony Mowbray and goalkeeper Gordon Marshall. The defensive signings were to replace Paul Elliot, an influential player. They were also an early sign that all was not well, because Elliots departure was not something discussed in advance with the manager who had not yet even met the player.A seven goal thriller at TannadiceBradys first competitive game in charge was at Tannadice. On 10 August 1991, fans were entertained by seven goals. It was the best and worst of the Brady years; the Bhoys threw away a two-goal lead before getting a late winner.Surely now excitement and progress lay ahead? Instead, Celtic struggled to mount a serious title challenge. Rangers were dominant, and Celtic lacked the squad depth to compete. Bradys inexperience showed as he attempted to adapt to the Scottish game.Celtic ultimately finished third, behind Rangers and Hearts. The cups had not offered any moments of brightness and the Celts failed to even reach a final, far less win any silverware. Both competitions brought their own problems. The Celts faced Airdrie in the League Cup. In a match where they were comfortable favourites, Celtic were defeated on penalties, the first time the Bhoys had lost this way in the League Cup.Later came the Scottish Cup semi-final. Playing against Rangers at Hampden, the Ibrox team went down to ten men after only ten minutes. Despite the pouring rain, Celtic fans were cheered at the thought that their team would surely now reach the final. Instead, a 1-0 loss meant a thoroughly miserable night. And the less said about Europe, the better. Celtic entered the UEFA Cup and eased past Belgian side Germinal Ekeren in the first round. When drawn against Swiss team Neuchatel Xamax, it looked like the third round and a European run was a reasonable prospect. What followed was arguably Celtics worst ever European result. The Bhoys were hammered in Switzerland, falling to a 5-1 defeat. The new manager seemed to have no idea how to cope with going behind in the game.Even a 1-0 win back in Glasgow was not enough to hide the humiliation associated with this fixture, one that was remembered for decades to come.Tony Cascarino (Celtic) 30.07.1991. Photo Imago ColorsportBy the close of the season, it was clear that it was a period best forgotten for Celtic fans. Arguably the highlight came off the pitch. The signing of Tony Cascarino can be described as a catastrophe, but somehow the club managed to swap him for future captain Tom Boyd.It was now clear that Brady was a man under a great deal of pressure. The 1992-93 season had to see significant progress or he would surely not be long for the job.Stuart Slater Glasgow Celtic FC 02 August 1993. Photo Mary Evans Allstar IMAGOThere were some more personnel changes. It saw the arrival of Andy Payton, Rudi Vata and, most notably, Stuart Slater as the clubs record transfer. Midway through the season, Frank McAvennie returned for a second spell too.Despite this, the season was just as much a disappointment as the previous campaign. Celtic again struggled to keep pace with Rangers. The team showed flashes of quality but lacked consistency, particularly in key matches. Defensive vulnerabilities and a lack of cutting edge in attack contributed to dropped points.Yet again, Bradys transfer judgement could be questioned. His two biggest signings Cascarino and Slater proved to be ineffective and not suited for Celtic or the Scottish game.Celtic were again third, this time behind Rangers and Aberdeen. The cups were just as disappointing; a Scottish Cup loss to Falkirk and League Cup semi-final defeat by Aberdeen continued the clubs barren trophy spell. The one bright spot came in a single European game. In September, Celtic travelled to Cologne and suffered a 2-0 defeat, which seemed to end European hopes. However, the return leg at Celtic Park was a famous night as a 3-0 victory turned the tie on its head. Sadly, another German team Borussia Dortmund soon ended the Hoops European hopes.Liam Brady with John Collins and Paul McStay. Photo The Celtic WikiAs season 1993-94 arrived, most fans and commentators were surprised to find Brady still in post. The previous two years had been one of Celtic struggles, and the manager did not even have the goodwill that comes from having previously played for the club.Part of the reason for this was the off-field chaos which had engulfed the club. Celtic in this era faced numerous problems, not least a lack of money and crumbling stadium. They also had a Board with no idea how to fix this, which possibly gave Brady the leeway to continue in post. However, within a few weeks of the season starting, it was clear that better days were not coming. The Celts won only two of their opening ten league games, and they also fell to a League Cup semi-final defeat by Rangers. On 6 October 1993, the Bhoys travelled to Perth to play St Johnstone. A 2-1 defeat that day proved to be the final straw. The manager penned his resignation letter following the game, and Celtic were off in search of a new permanent manager. This eventually became former Celt Lou Macari. However, he would also not last long. Before season 1993-94 concluded, Fergus McCanns takeover had transformed the club. This included Macaris dismissal, to be replaced by Tommy Burns.Although Liam Bradys time at Celtic had concluded. It was not the end of his footballing life. By the end of 1993 he had been appointed as boss of Brighton & Hove Albion, staying until 1995.He later became Head of Youth Development at Arsenal for almost two decades and also served as assistant manager of the Republic of Ireland from 20082010.In reality, Bradys time at Celtic can be seen as something of an impossible task. He was up against a Rangers side with other peoples money to spend, and he also had to work in a Celtic Park that was riven with boardroom chaos. These factors made it extremely difficult for any manager let alone a novice to deliver success.Equally, some criticisms can be levelled at him too. Believing that he could go to a club such as Celtic for his first managerial post having no previous links with the club was nave. He also showed an inability to learn and adapt, perhaps best emphasised in the 5-1 defeat from Neuchatel Xamax.I was a failure as Celtic manager, Liam BradyNevertheless, and in his defence, Brady has never sought to hide or blame others for these problems. His biography openly states I was a failure as Celtic manager. Whilst he does point to wider challenges, he also openly acknowledges his own lack of suitability for the post.Liam Brady is undeniably one of Irelands finest ever footballers, and someone who enjoyed a significant and successful time in football. It is just a pity for him and all the Celtic fans who watched through that period that the same description cannot be applied to his time at Celtic Park!Matthew MarrHAVE YOUR SAY Join the Celtic conversation in our comments section belowCeltic Shorts is the new home for the team from The Celtic StarSummer Sale now on! Since then, the league has attracted political and nonpolitical criticism for its vague policies regarding the definition of participants. Former NBA player Royce White also expressed his thoughts on the matter and took a dig at the WNBA, referring to LeBron James. On Fox News on Sunday, White used King James to blast the league:Its just astounding that the WNBA cant define the W in the name. LeBron James, you know, after, after he expires in the NBA. You know, maybe he wakes up one day and realizes hes a woman as well! Who could argue that that wouldnt make the womens game better?White even proposed his own name to play in the league. Earlier, another former basketball player, Enes Kanter, also seemingly put together a similar pitch and asked the WNBA to consider him for a contract.Sophie Cunninghams comment about protecting little girls in the locker room has created a ripple effect in the WNBA.WNBA commissioner sends memo to teams for the recent conversation on transgender rightsWNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert finally seemed to address the recent conversations about the LGBTQ+ community. According to ESPN, she sent a memo to all teams in the league and said she would meet with them regarding the ongoing conversations.Engelbert wrote in the memo:I know many of you have received questions in recent weeks regarding transgender athlete participation in womens basketball, and I expect this topic will continue to receive significant attention. I wanted to reach out to share how we are approaching these conversations at the league office and to thank those of you who have responded to questions from the media with thoughtfulness and professionalism.Engelbert has also faced significant criticism for avoiding important questions about the leagues policies. That has even led to rumors of her exit from her leadership position.READ MORE: Skip Bayless Says Sophie Cunningham, Not DiJonai Carrington, Should Be Circling 8/23 After Another Poor OutingCari Champion Raises Major Question About DiJonai Carringtons Future After Controversial Sophie Cunningham IncidentCollege Sports Network has you covered with the latest news, analysis, insights, and trending stories in the NBA, college football, mens college basketball, womens college basketball, and college baseball!0 Comments 0 Shares 63 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMColts' kicking battle between Blake Grupe and Spencer Shrader has a leaderWESTFIELD A clear leader is emerging in the battle for the Colts kicking job even as Indianapolis is trying to give both of its experienced kickers a full and fair chance at winning the job.Blake Grupe, the kicker the Colts scooped up from the Saints late in the year, has made 27 of 30 field goals in the first two weeks of practices to take a firm lead over Spencer Shrader, who missed four kicks in Sundays practice to fall to 20 out of 30 overall. We're not judging who's the best kicker in the first two weeks, Colts special teams kicker Brian Mason said. We're judging who is the best kicker to make us through the regular season that gives us the best chance to score points and win games.Shrader is kicking at a disadvantage.Hes coming off a major injury, the kind kickers rarely have to overcome. Shrader made a name for himself as competition for former Colts kicker Matt Gay in 2024, then came back to Indianapolis in 2025 and won the job outright. Shrader got off to a great start as the teams full-time kicker last season, only to see his season ended prematurely when Raiders safety Tristin McCollum dove into Shraders right leg after a kick in October, tearing the ACL and MCL in his kicking leg.Indianapolis expected Shrader to struggle as he worked his way back. Its unreasonable to think, after not kicking for eight months and not really kicking in a full operation for 10 months, that it was going to come out here and everything was going to be perfect, Mason said. Some of that, I think, is mental, which is going to be natural, especially with kickers that he wants to be kicking at the near perfect level he was last September. It's going to take some time for him to be able to get there. But Shraders struggles through the first two weeks have been pronounced.Shrader is now 20 of 30 on field goals in live practices after a Sunday performance that included the third-year kicker missing four kicks, all from 50 yards or longer. All but one of those misses have been pulled to the left; Shrader hooked three of his misses badly Sunday, and the other miss was his first push of training camp, potentially in an effort to correct his previous miss. There (is) a little bit of an issue that we've addressed, Mason said. That's going to come down to rhythm, timing and leg swing that he's looking to clean up, and just expect to see him progress as we continue to go through things.Grupe isnt leaving much room for Shrader to work through his issues.Up until two misses in Thursday nights practice, Grupe hadnt missed a kick in a live situation in his entire time with the Colts, dating back to Indianapolis signing him late last season. He's no longer pitching a perfect game, Mason said. We can finally get over that hurdle.Grupe did leave a 61-yard kick short Thursday night, a reminder that there are differences between the two kickers. While Grupes leg is plenty strong he holds the franchise record with a 60-yard field goal against Seattle last season it does not have quite the power potential of his counterpart. He has a very good leg for his size, but it's not going to have elite leg strength, so when he's kicking from 60-plus, he's going to have to get a little bit more into that at times, Mason said. More so than what Shrader would have to do.Unfortunately, Shrader is still working his way back to the consistency that won him the job last season. When hes pulled the ball to the left, Shrader has also frequently hit the ball on a much lower trajectory than the high, arcing kicks that got the Colts attention in the first place. The competition isnt over.Indianapolis heads to New England for a joint practice and the preseason opener this week, kicking off the next phase of the competition, when Grupe and Shrader have to prove themselves in a live situation. Before this weekend, there wasnt as much separation between the two as it might seem, because there are days the Colts kick outside of the practices open to media and the fans. Grupe had made 85% of his kicks heading into the weekend; Shrader 83.Grupe has simply made more of the kicks that matter. The bigger differentiation is going to be when they go live, Shrader hasn't been kicking as consistently as Grupe when we've been going live, Mason said. But we kind of look at the big picture overall. What's their best ball look like? What are the timing, the rhythm, the mechanics on their best ball, versus is there an issue or something that we can highlight? The Colts kicking competition is about to enter the next phase.A few more chances to close the gap that has opened the first two weeks.
