49ers undrafted WR has been 'most physical receiver' in training camp
Will Pauling wasn't drafted, but he's making it hard for the San Francisco 49ers to ignore him.The rookie wide receiver, signed as an undrafted free agent, has emerged as one of the standout performers of the 49ers' training camp. Not for his flashy catches, but for his physicality. Wide receivers coach Leonard Hankerson didn't hold back when describing the 5-foot-10, 183-pound Pauling's play in Santa Clara."He's tough, man," Hankerson said, via NBC Sports Bay Area. "I love Will. That kid comes in, he works. He stayed here the whole offseason. He's the hammer in the running game. Right now, he's been the most physical receiver, I'll tell you that much."With Mike Evans, De'Zhaun Stribling and Deebo Samuel locking down three roster spots, and Christian Kirk, Demarcus Robinson and Jordan Watkins in strong position for three more, the competition for the 49ers' remaining receiver spots is thinning out. Pauling has seemingly put himself in the mix, even with Jacob Cowing sidelined by a hip-flexor injury.Blocking has been Pauling's calling card so far: "No matter if he's going up against a D-end, a linebacker, or a DB, he's been sustaining blocks," Hankerson said. "And that shows up a lot."Pauling's college resume includes stops at Cincinnati, Wisconsin and Notre Dame. His best statistical season came in 2023 at Wisconsin, where he caught 74 passes for 837 yards and six touchdowns. Last year, in his lone season at Notre Dame, he averaged a career-best 14.7 yards per reception and finished with 26 receptions for 381 yards and six touchdowns. Across his 48-game college career, Pauling totaled 155 receptions for 1,753 yards and 15 touchdowns. To make the 49ers' 53-man roster, Pauling will likely need to contribute on special teams an area where he's getting real reps despite no college punt-return experience.Hankerson sees real upside, but also room to clean up the details."I've been impressed with him," Hankerson said. "He's showing some speed, showing some ability to make plays, but he has to continue to work on his technique as far as not slipping. He fell down a couple times. We'll keep working with him there."Barring a roster spot, Pauling looks like a strong bet to land on the 49ers' practice squad. This article originally appeared on Niners Wire: 49ers undrafted WR has been 'most physical receiver' in training camp

Astros Claim OF Nelson Velazquez Off Waivers, DFA Whitcomb
PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 19: Nelson Velzquez #38 of the St Louis Cardinals gets ready in the on deck circle against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field on July 19, 2026 in Phoenix, Arizona. (Photo by Norm Hall/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesThe Houston Texans announced they have claimed OF Nelson Velazquez off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals. To clear a spot for him on the 40-man roster, they have designated UT Shay Whitcomb for assignment. Velazquez, 27, is a right-handed hitting outfielder with experience at all three outfield spots. He was batting .216 with a .289 OBP and .722 OPS for the Cardinals, albeit in only 74 AB. He posted 4 doubles, 4 HR and 12 RBI. In his time at Triple-A Memphis, he batted .232 with a .344 OBP and .764 OPS. For his career at the MLB level, Velazquez has hit .213 with a .287 OBP and .719 OPS with 35 HR and 99 RBI in 626 AB. Whitcomb, 27, has never been given any kind of a real opportunity with the Astros. Whitcomb only has 96 MLB AB across 57 games spanning 3 different seasons in Houston. This season at Triple-A Sugar Land, he is batting .274 with a .338 OBP and .758 OPS. He has 9 HR and 52 RBI, he has also stolen 23 bases in 25 attempts. Whitcombs lack of opportunity at the MLB has negatively impacted his numbers, as he has less than double the number of AB as he does games played, indicating he is often only getting 1 AB in a game late. This year for the Astros he was only 3 for 23, but with 2 HR and 5 RBI, across 17 games. Whitcombs lack of opportunity in both being called up and in getting playing time clearly demonstrated he was not a part of the teams vision. The fact he was not recalled while Zach Dezenzo struggled so badly reiterated that fact.

Colts release first unofficial depth chart ahead of preseason opener
WESTFIELD, INDIANA - AUGUST 04: Daniel Jones #17 and Riley Leonard #15 of the Indianapolis Colts step back to pass in front of Anthony Richardson #5 of the Indianapolis Colts during the Indianapolis Colts Training Camp at Grand Park Sports Campus on August 04, 2026 in Westfield, Indiana. (Photo by Justin Casterline/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesThe Colts released their first unofficial depth chart of the 2026 season Monday ahead of Thursday nights preseason opener against the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium. As always, the word unofficial matters here, especially this early in camp, but the first depth chart still gives a useful look at how Indianapolis is currently organizing a few key position battles.OFFENSEWR:Alec Pierce (PUP), Laquon Treadwell, E.J. Shane Steichens plan is for Riley Leonard and Anthony Richardson Sr. to split reps against New England, and the depth chart reflects that competition by listing both players as the No. 2 quarterback for now. That is probably the right way to frame the battle. Jones is the starter, while Leonard and Richardson are still fighting for the backup job.On offense, Alec Pierce is still listed as a starting receiver despite his ongoing ankle situation, alongside Josh Downs and Ashton Dulin. The offensive line has Bernhard Raimann at left tackle, Quenton Nelson at left guard, Tanor Bortolini at center, Matt Goncalves at right guard and Jalen Travis at right tackle. The right side is worth watching, with rookie Jalen Farmer listed behind Goncalves and Luke Tenuta behind Travis. Tyler Warren is listed as the top tight end, ahead of Mo Alie-Cox, Drew Ogletree and Will Mallory. At running back, Jonathan Taylor is unsurprisingly listed first, with DJ Giddens ahead of Seth McGowan for the backup job. That is one of the more interesting camp battles because the Colts have talked about wanting to manage Taylors workload, and whoever wins the No. 2 role could have a real weekly job. Giddens getting the first nod makes sense based on experience and draft slot, but McGowan has generated enough camp buzz that this one should not be treated as settled yet.Defensively, CJ Allen is listed as the starting middle linebacker, which is notable even on an unofficial depth chart, although he is currently injured and I doubt will play. Akeem Davis-Gaither is listed at weakside linebacker, while the defensive line features Arden Key, DeForest Buckner, Grover Stewart and Laiatu Latu as the listed starters. In the secondary, Sauce Gardner and Charvarius Ward are the outside corners, Camryn Bynum and AJ Haulcy are the starting safeties, and Justin Walley is listed as the nickel.Special teams also has one unresolved battle, with Blake Grupe and Spencer Shrader listed as co-starters at kicker. Anthony Gould is listed as both the top kick returner and punt returner, which gives him a clear early path to roster value even if his offensive role remains uncertain. The depth chart should not be treated as final, especially before the first preseason game and Tuesdays joint practice with the Patriots. Still, it confirms the main early storylines: Leonard vs. Richardson for QB2, Giddens vs. McGowan behind Taylor, the kicker battle, Allens early defensive role, and how the Colts are lining up a new-look secondary. For an unofficial August depth chart, that is enough to make it worth paying attention to.

Varsity Bears at Stevenson High School, plus a stadium update
Aug 5, 2026; Lake Forest, IL, USA; Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson walks on the field during training camp at Halas Hall. Mandatory Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters ConnectThe Chicago Bears held a Varsity Bears practice at Stevenson High School (Lincolnshire, Illinois) earlier today, and with a physical, padded practice scheduled for tomorrow at Halas Hall, today was a low-impact walk-through. Which means not much of a camp report; however, there were a few notable things, including a stadium update! Bears chairman George McCaskey was asked by NBC Chicagos Patrick Fazio if there was any news about the ongoing stadium saga, and McCaskey said that an update will be provided in the coming days. And regarding building in Indiana, McCaskey said: Were doing some due diligence on a 2nd site in Hammond (Indiana). And if there was anything new regarding the Arlington Heights, Illinois location, McCaskey said No.Welp You can check out Fazios video below. Per CHGOs Adam Hoge, Luther Burden, Kyler Gordon, Montez Sweat, and pretty much every other injured player signing autographs. Burden seemed to be walking relatively normally. He also said that Zavion Thomas, who left practice yesterday, was spotted and doesnt appear to have much of a limp at all.Defensive back Cam Lewis, who left practice a couple of days ago on a cart and was held out yesterday, was on the turf for the walk-through.Despite what you may have seen about Gervon Dexter Sr., he was still lined up with the ones when it mattered today. He may have walked through with the threes a time or two, but with Jordan van den Berg emerging and Dayo Odeyingbo being worked in at defensive tackle on occasion, math tells us that someone unexpected will need to get a few reps with the threes once in a while. As a reminder, we talking bout (a walk-through) practiceCheck out a few videos from the day.Varsity Bears, we have arrived pic.twitter.com/pZTqPUxQyX Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) August 10, 2026Squad pulling up pic.twitter.com/0VueiRri9A Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) August 10, 2026Bears players and coaches arriving at Stevenson High School today for Varsity Bears walk-through. pic.twitter.com/QrXFWTxa1w Larry Mayer (@LarryMayer) August 10, 2026No limp for Luther. cream pic.twitter.com/vXiah6l6UU Cream sleeve (@creamsleeve) August 10, 2026.@cairosantos19 with some fantasy advice pic.twitter.com/PKyMUFdyLQ Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) August 10, 2026High fives all around before practice! #DaBears#Bearspic.twitter.com/ncEiTOIt4T SoBackSports (@SoBackSports) August 10, 2026Not too much action happening. CB Smith Snowdens path to Michigan Football, outlook for 2026
PASADENA, CALIFORNIA - AUGUST 30: Smith Snowden #2 of the Utah Utes runs with the ball during the first half against UCLA Bruins at Rose Bowl Stadium on August 30, 2025 in Pasadena, California. (Photo by Ric Tapia/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesMichigans secondary was good, not great in 2025. As such, the Wolverines dipped into the transfer portal to make a meaningful upgrade alongside Zeke Berry and Jyaire Hill, both of whom are entering their third season as starters. Former Utah Ute Smith Snowden was the guy, and hes expected to be one of the defenses best players this year.Heres a look back at the accomplished career Snowden has had to this point and what to expect from him in 2026.The story so farA native of Lehi, Utah and a product of Skyridge High School, Snowden didnt grab a ton of attention during the 2023 recruiting cycle. Ranked as a four-star recruit by the 247Sports composite, he was the No. 4 player in Utah and the No. 356 overall player in the country. His list of offers wasnt as impressive as you usually see from some other four-stars, but he ultimately chose to commit to Kyle Whittingham and Utah over schools like BYU, Tennessee, Washington State, Colorado, Arizona and Stanford.Snowden joined Utah a bit undersized at 5-foot-10 and 175 pounds, but it didnt stop him from seeing action on defense right away. As a freshman, he played in 11 games, appearing on special teams and in the secondary. As a sophomore in 2024, his role expanded to include 11 starts at nickel. That season, he made 48 total tackles, broke up 10 passes, forced a fumble and even returned some kickoffs and punts. He truly enjoyed a breakout season in 2025, earning second-team All-Big 12 honors. He started at nickel in every game for the Utes and even got some time on offense, carrying the ball eight times for 40 yards and catching 13 passes for 57 yards. On defense, he compiled 37 tackles, two tackles for loss, 11 pass breakups and two interceptions.Following the season, Snowden and plenty of other players entered the transfer portal. With Whittingham ending up at Michigan, it was only a matter of time before he followed him to Ann Arbor. He committed to the program in January and is set to join the starting lineup this fall.Outlook for 2026Michigan brought back Hill and Berry after solid seasons for both of them in 2025. Both will likely reprise their starting roles on the outside, opening up a natural spot at nickel for Snowden to take over.Snowden thrived as the starting nickel at Utah the last two seasons and has the chance to provide both high-end talent and veteran leadership to Michigans defense in 2026. Despite him still being pretty undersized at just 185 pounds, itd be hard to rule out some snaps for him on the outside as well, with plenty of other players like Jordan Young, Mason Curtis, Rod Moore and others as candidates to get snaps in the slot as well. What we can rule out, though, is probably him getting snaps on offense as he did at Utah. Michigan should have more than enough weapons there that he shouldnt be needed. It wouldnt be a surprise for him to at least get some reps returning punts or kickoffs, although I wouldnt bank on that being his role regularly. The defense has more questions than it does answers heading into the 2026 season. Plenty of attrition at all three levels has led to some speculation about just how strong the unit can be. However, defensive coordinator Jay Hill has had plenty of success at BYU the last two years, with the secondary being the star of the show. With Berry and Hill, there was some optimism, but Snowden makes it an area fans shouldnt be worried about much at all.

NFL Rule Update Allows Designated Staff Member To Throw Challenge Flags
Head coaches will no longer have to juggle a red flag with their game-day wardrobe. The NFL is updating its rulebook for the 2026 season to allow head coaches to delegate replay challenge duties to a designated sideline staff member, ESPN reported Monday. The updated Rule 15, Section 1, Article 1(a) now reads, "The head coach or head coach's pregame challenge designee can initiate a challenge by throwing a red flag onto the field of play before the next legal snap or kick." The league finalized the procedural modification during its routine summer rulebook adjustments, a process that does not require an ownership vote. The adjustment comes after a 2025 season that reportedly featured 151 coach challenges, the highest single-season total since 2019. Allowing a staff designee to throw the flag would help advise against emotional decision-making. Head coaches are expected to remain heavily involved in challenge decisions, whether it's communicating with the staff through a headset or telling them directly. Under standard NFL rules, each team receives two challenges per game, with the opportunity to earn a third. To be awarded that additional challenge, a team must have at least one of its initial two challenges successfully overturned upon review. If a coachs challenge is unsuccessful, the team loses a timeout, meaning teams cannot challenge plays if they have no timeouts remaining. If the first two challenges are unsuccessful, the team will be ineligible to receive a third challenge for the game.
