Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua provided an early scare on Tuesday, leaving joint practice with the Dallas Cowboys alongside head athletic trainer Reggie Scott. The star wideout did not return to finish the day's session and head coach Sean McVay wasn't sure what happened.While any early exit for a franchise cornerstone brings a certain level of anxiety, veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford doesn't appear to be hitting the panic button just yet. Speaking to reporters after practice, Stafford projected a calm, business-as-usual attitude regarding his top target's departure."I did not [see what happened]," Stafford said when asked about Nacua's exit. "I'm not really sure what the issue was, but nobody ran up to me in a panic, so I don't think it was anything too major."Staffords laid-back reaction is a welcome sign for a fan base that holds its breath whenever Nacua steps off the field. The 25-year-old receiver has developed a reputation for his relentless, physical playing style, but that same trait has occasionally sidelined him. After avoiding injury during his record-breaking 2023 rookie campaign, Nacua dealt with a right knee PCL sprain in 2024 and missed a game due to an ankle sprain in 2025.Despite the occasional bump in the road, Nacuas production has been nothing short of historic. He is coming off a staggering 2025 campaign where he led the entire NFL with 129 receptions, racking up 1,715 yards and 10 touchdowns. Over his first three professional seasons, he has accumulated 313 catches for 4,191 yards and 19 scores.The timing of any ailment is also notable from a business perspective. MANHATTAN Kansas State football offensive lineman George Fitzpatrick's status for the 2026 season remains a question after missing the entire 2025 season due to a preseason medical emergency.Wildcats coach Collin Klein said Tuesday, Aug. 11, during his fall camp press conference that Fitzpatrick still has some benchmarks to hit that he, his family, specialists and team doctors agreed upon."He's still working through that process," Klein said. "He's not quite there yet."Klein's sentiment Tuesday echoed what he said last month during Big 12 Media Days in Frisco, Texas. The 6-foot-6, 301-pound offensive tackle transferred to K-State before last season from Ohio State and was expected to be the team's starting left tackle.Fitzpatrick's absence was felt along an offensive line that wasn't the most consistent. It did, however, open the door for more time for John Pastore, who enters this season as an All-Big 12 offensive tackle.At this point, anything Fitzpatrick can give would feel like a bonus. The Wildcats will have four new starters on the offensive line this season, where Fitzpatrick could have figured into the right tackle battle if healthy. Instead, that spot appears to be Gus Hawkins', unless he's challenged by freshman Oliver Miller or Auburn transfer Tyler Johnson.Fitzpatrick played 16 games during the 2024 season with the Buckeyes, playing 84 offensive snaps for a team that won a national championship.Outside of Fitzpatrick, Klein indicated that the Wildcats are healthy through a week of fall camp.Wyatt D. MURFREESBORO The confidence around MTSU football this preseason feels real. Which is baffling, given the state of things only two seasons into former Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason's tenure.His Blue Raiders were bad in 2024, and they werent better in 2025. Back-to-back records of 3-9 have set this up to be do-or-die third season for Mason, and standing here on the precipice, the outlook could be better. Athlon picked MTSU to finish ninth (of 10 teams) in Conference USA. A vote last month of the leagues media also ranked MTSU next to last.Listen, lets be honest: This thing started slow, Mason said to me this past summer, pausing to set up the inevitable "but" to follow.But I've got a quarterback. This young kid, Roman Gagliano, can play.The counterpoint to the mountain of bad mojo from Masons first two MTSU seasons is a 6-foot-3, 226-pound redshirt sophomore quarterback who, oddly enough, has been on the sideline for nearly all of it.Yes, Gagliano is the hope. Hes the renewed optimism. He's believable, too, as anyone who was still watching the end of MTSUs 2025 season (and bless your heart if you were) could attest:Mason isnt wrong. Gagliano can play. After veteran starter Nick Vattiato was hurt, Gagliano stepped in for the season's final three games and crushed it. He threw for 911 yards and six touchdowns (with no interceptions). He also ran for 182 yards and two more touchdowns. He led MTSU to wins its final two games of the season after scaring heavily favored rival Western Kentucky during his first start in place of Vattiato.There would be quarterback uncertainty for the Blue Raiders in 2026. Clearly, they already had their guy.The biggest (difference) is the pressure, Gagliano said of being MTSUs starter for an entire offseason, but I don't see it as pressure. I asked to be in this position. I think just knowing that everybody is counting on me just makes me work a little harder. Were just tired of losing and tired of having that narrative.When I asked Mason this summer about his own motivation to the program turned around, he immediately started talking about his quarterback. Then he kept talking about Gagliano for more than five minutes, raving about his leadership skills, even comparing him to former Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia because of the impact Gagliano's personality is making on the program.If there's a glaring similarity to Pavia, it has been in Gagliano being overlooked. Even Mason wasnt always so enamored with Gagliano as his starting quarterback, and hell say so.Hell tell you that leading up to that WKU game, Gagliano threw six interceptions during one practice, and everybody was scared to death. As Gagliano explained at the time, however, he likes to use practices to try things he wouldnt otherwise, just to figure out what he can get away when it counts. The nearby Tigers of the SEC didnt recruit Gagliano, but he did go to camps on campus and developed a relationship with Mason, who spent the 2021 season as Auburns defensive coordinator.Growing up, Gagliano fancied himself a fan of Florida, not Auburn (he said he was born in Gainesville, Florida), and while he entertained aspirations of playing for a Power Four conference school, he remains grateful to Mason for the opportunity at MTSU.That loyalty is why, Gagliano said, he didnt even consider a glance at the transfer portal after last seasons impressive finish couldve opened a few doors for him.Coach Mason bringing me here freshman year, Gagliano said, I think I owe it to him and this community to bring them wins and bring them a season other than 3-9. The Houston Texans already have several undrafted free agents turning heads in the early stages of training camp.Defensive back Collin Wright feels as if he's locked up a spot on the active roster with how many forced pass breakups he's had over the past two weeks. Running back Noah Whittington continues to make plays with the second-team offense, often breaking through the defensive line for a substantial gain.Even offensive tackle Sam Hagen seems to be making life hard for Houston's decision regarding the trench play. But could Treyvhon Saunders be another player worth watching entering Thursday's preseason game?The Colgate wideout has consistently made his presence felt during the early stages of training camp. At his best in the return game, Saunders made several impressive grabs during Tuesday's practice and could be competing with Jared Wayne for the final receiver spot on either the active roster or the practice squad. "Treyvhon has done a really nice job of just being smart. Always aligning in the right place," Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. "We throw a lot on the receivers when it comes to alignments and motions. I feel like he's handled that really well. He's a fast, explosive guy who can make some plays with the football in his hand, so we'll see how he does tomorrow night."At Colgate, Saunders caught 50 passes for 700 yards and six touchdowns during his Senior season. Throughout his Raiders career, he recorded over 200 receptions for 2,390 yards and 12 touchdowns as the No. 1 option on offense. The Texans' receiver room is deep, but there's room for another player or two to fight their way into the conversation. Most of the time, that comes based on the special teams role, which seems to be where Saunders is thriving best in entering the first preseason outing. A strong performance on Thursday against the Los Angeles Chargers might have Houston thinking differently this fall on a potential role for the undrafted rookie. Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown said his team got some wins and competed much better in the practice vs. the Rams on Tuesday, compared to a year ago when the Cowboys were handled easily in practice by the eventual NFC runnerups.What year a difference makes for the Dallas Cowboys, who vividly remember getting handled easily by the Los Angeles Rams in a joint training camp practice before the 2025 season. The Cowboys went on to finish 7-9-1 and out of the playoffs while the Rams went 12-5 and finished with a loss in the NFC championship game.The Rams are expected to be good again in 2026. Some consider them the Super Bowl favorites out of the NFC, thanks to a trade for NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett and the expected return out retirement of former All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald.The Cowboys have openly talked about having Super Bowl hopes of their own so Tuesdays scrimmage against the Rams served as a litmus test of sorts.And things went much better for the Cowboys than they did a year ago.That was especially true for a defense that finished last in NFL in 2025, considering the Rams had the only offense in the NFL that outgained the Cowboys offense last season. It showed what we have building on from the spring up until now, linebacker DeMarvion Overshown said. We got to see what we got. It puts stuff in perspective. Its another block we are building on. It was completely different from when they came to Oxnard last year and damn near had a field day. It feels good to compete and get some wins.Defensive highlights from the practice include:The Cowboys run defense is significantly better than a year ago with defensive tackles Kenny Clark and Quinnen Williams manning the middle and Rashard Gary at edge rusher.Edge rusher Donovan Ezeiruaku flashed with a potential sack and a tackle for loss.Linebacker Dee Winters has a tackle for loss and Overshown had several good plays in the passing game.Rookie safety Caleb Downs had tackle for loss playing from the slot. He also saw significant time at safety with Malik Hooker not practicing for personal reasons. Cornerbacks Shavon Revel, Cobie Durant and DaRon Bland continued to build on their strong starts to training camp with solid efforts against a Rams receiver corps explosive as any in the league, featuring Puka Nacua and Davante Adams.The star of the day on defense was backup safety Justin Barron, who had three interceptions. He had one off Matt Stafford, the reigning NFL MVP, and two off Stetson Bennett.Quarterback Dak Prescott and the Cowboys offense started a little slow. But there is no question they got in their groove in the red zone and Prescott tossed two touchdown passes to CeeDee Lamb and one to right end Brevin Spann-Ford.Running back Jaydon Blue spoiled what has been a start to camp from the second-year player out of Texas with a fumble. His opportunities with the first team decreased after the turnover with Phil Mafah splitting more reps with the first team.Prescott threw an interception on a forced throw to George Pickens. Backup quarterbacks Sam Howell and Joe Milton also tossed interceptions.Howell aslo had two touchdown passes.Pickens continued to shine on offense.He impact started to show after brief skirmish with Rams cornerback Jaylen Watson.He followed with a catch on a slant and then a back should down the right sideline against Rams star cornerback Trent McDuffie.Left tackle Tyler Guyton had another good day, although he missed a few plays getting his right elbow looked at and benefitted from the absence of Garrett, who was held out of practice to rest.George is being George, Prescott said. Thats what I expect of him. Its what he expects from himself. He just does great things and today was another showing up that. Interestingly enough, the Cowboys ended practice running sprints, while the Rams players snickered as they walked off the field.Pickens told the Rams to mind their own business and to keep walking. We are getting this cardio in, Pickens said.Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer pointed at that the post practicing conditioning was prompted by the players, not the coaches. Schottenheimer has had the players run sprints after practice since the start of camp because he wants a well conditioned team.The players got the message and believe in the philosophy.Conditioning is something that he put on his as the beginning, Prescott said. We want to be the best conditioned team, the most conditioned team. Guys are taking pride in it. It was simple, Demo (Overshown) came up to me and asked me, do you want to run?,. I was like yeah, I know we (the offense) got it in us. It was just normal practice. Lets go get our runs in and get better. When you are conditioned, you play faster. You play better. You think faster, you react quicker. It just helps you. If you are most conditioned its going to help you and give you the upper hand. If we can steal that advantage, why not.

The prospect acquired by the Tigers in the Casey Mize trade will wait a little longer to make his debut with the West Michigan Whitecaps, Detroit's High-A affiliate.Kash Mayfield, a left-hander, was placed on the injured list by the Whitecaps on Tuesday. He hasn't pitched since July 24 with High-A Fort Wayne, a San Diego Padres affiliate. He has been battling a hamstring injury.Mayfield was acquired by the Tigers just before the Aug. 3 trade deadline in a deal that sent Mize, a free agent-to-be, to the Padres. Mayfield, 21, came to the Tigers as did fellow lefty Jackson Wolf, 27, who is with Triple-A Toledo.Mayfield was a first-round pick by the Padres, No. 25 overall, in the 2024 draft.He spent the entire season with Fort Wayne before the trade, making 15 starts. The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder was 3-1 with a 3.54 ERA, with 62 strikeouts and 22 walks in 53 innings.In 2025 at Low-A, he had a 2.97 ERA in 29 starts.In high school in Oklahoma, Mayfield twice was the state's Gatorade baseball player of the year. ESPN NFL draft analyst Matt Miller, currently on leave following a car crash and a litany of allegations over bogus charity leagues, has been charged with a misdemeanor stemming from his crash.According to a court filing in Jasper County, Mo., Miller faces a charge of failure to drive on the right half of the roadway when the roadway was of sufficient width, resulting in an accident.The charge is the latest consequence to emerge from Millers crash, which occurred on June 17. According to his familys GoFundMe, the crash left Miller with a compound fracture of his left femur, a shattered left kneecap and multiple broken ribs. However, multiple participants reported to Awful Announcing that Millers responsiveness was limited at best and winners not receiving their payouts, with some only receiving payment upon threatening to go the media.There were also stories of people purchasing scouting lessons from Miller, again with proceeds supposedly going to charity, and not getting what they paid for.The ensuing backlash led to Millers GoFundMe pausing donations (after raising $51,147) and the Missouri Attorney General opening an investigation into Miller. Miller later announced he was stepping away indefinitely, but also phrased it as if ESPN had placed him on leave.Those allegations are separate from Millers crash, which involved Millers Ford Bronco and a semi truck. Dash cam footage from the truck reportedly shows Millers car suddenly veering into the opposite lane and violently striking the truck, ejecting Miller despite his seat belt. The truck driver was not injured.An initial hearing for the misdemeanor charge is reportedly scheduled for Sept. 21 in Jasper County Circuit Court.
