Emily Martinez was so disappointed in her last match.The Holland boxer wasn't close to her best and lost a fight in town that all of her family and friends saw."I felt like my world fell apart," Martinez said.The Michigan Golden Gloves champion vowed never to let that happen again.Not the losing part, but putting so much weight on winning and losing that it affects other aspects of her life.More: Emily Martinez first Holland female boxer to win state Golden Gloves, reach nationals"I don't ever want to feel that again. I don't ever want to feel like my world crumbled because I lost a fight. I am not going to let it take over my life. Boxing isn't the only thing important in my life," she said.That was her mentality going into the annual King (and Queen) of the Jungle Tournament in Grand Rapids, a national tournament with a lot of exposure. Martinez, armed with her new outlook, won the championship at 125 pounds, earning the title of "Queen of the Jungle.""It meant a ton to me," she said. "But I tried not to put so much importance on it. I took a step back and looked at things differently. I wanted to come back from my last fight, which was trash. I wanted to remind myself that I am capable of doing better."And now the boxer who trains at Eli J's Boxing Club is the Queen of the Jungle."I have always wanted to win a national tournament," she said. "That was a goal of mine. I want to be established before I go pro."Martinez was also better in the ring, despite an injury that slowed her down. But she had enough to beat Cassie Norris of Indiana for the title."I kept my eyes on her. I hurt my leg a few days before the fight, so I really had to rely on my boxing because I couldn't move as much as I normally could. It was a blessing in disguise," Martinez said. Id assume with a few plays made this August, and serious conversations will be had about how to get him onto the field, if they havent started already. Nice to see 2025 second-round pick T.J. Sanders in a starting defensive line role. While theres not much hitting in camp, Sanders had a strong summer in Pittsford. If he emerges in Year 2, itd go a long way in stabilizing the Bills new defensive front. Kyle Allen still ahead of Shane Buechele despite a seemingly close battle for QB2 this summer. This one is likely to be settled on the field in the preseason.Undrafted rookie Kani Walker finds himself as either the CB3 or CB4 on the boundary right now, which is a testament to the steady albeit unspectacular camp the longer defensive back had. Jalon Kilgore listed with the third team is surprising, given how frequently he made plays at camp, and how much of the Bills staff raved about his play at St. John Fisher University in a variety of roles. Another surprise Joe Andreessen ahead of Keonta Jenkins at inside linebacker. Its not that Jenkins thoroughly outplayed Buffalo Joe at camp, its just that Jenkins took more snaps with the second team throughout the Bills time in Rochester. Its allowed players to participate in complete or near-complete seasons due to the lack of wear-and-tear being put on their bodies during practice.The reason they do this is to avoid the injuries currently plaguing the NFL. For their Week 1 opponent, the San Francisco 49ers, they have been the antithesis of the Rams, using physical practices to build calluses for the season. The 49ers have been ravaged by injuries for years, and according to 49ers insider Matt Maiocco, it appears All-Pro defender Nick Bosa has suffered a bit of a setback from an ACL injury. It has forced the 49ers to take things slowly with their top pass rusher."Coach Kyle Shanahan said 49ers DE Nick Bosa has tendinitis, which, he said, is "a pretty normal thing with ACLs." He said the team has to be smart with Bosa from week to week," wrote Maiocco.Bosa only played in three games last season and hasn't had a double-digit sack season since 2023. He is a former first overall pick and played seven seasons with the Cardinals.After Mike LaFleur was hired as the new head coach of the Cardinals after a historical 14 loss season, there were discussions immediately about the quarterback room.RELATED: BRISSETT HAS NEW DEAL. CAN HE NOW FOCUS ON THE JOB?Who to keep? Did they want a QB competition between Murray and Jacoby Brissett? Cut bait? Trade one? Release or trade both?At the time, there were several free agent options such as Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson. The draft was approaching, and Arizona owned the #3 overall pick, which could be traded so that they could accrue more draft picks and get the young quarterback they wanted.The decision that was made was to release Murray on March 11 and then anoint Brissett as the starter in 2026. The very next day, Murray inked a one-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings for $1.3 million, the veterans minimum.His won-loss record with the Cardinals was 38-48-1. He passed for 20,460 yards and tossed 121 touchdowns. He ran for 3,193 rushing yards and scored another 32 times.And now, he has been competing with former first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy for the starting role with the Vikes. Head coach Kevin OConnell came out and stated the QB competition could be won by either athlete.Before Tuesdays practice, OConnell informed the team that Murray was now the starting quarterback for the 2026 season, according to Alec Lewis of The Athletic.That didnt take long. Minnesota has yet to play a preseason game.OConnell told Lewis:Its just the appropriate time now to give our team and everybody clarity on the direction were taking.The Vikings had 10 training camp practices with the lions share of first-team reps taken by Murray. Aaron Jones is the stud running back, and the team drafted a fullback this year by taking the drafts #1-ranked player at that position in Max Bredeson.ESPN ranked all teams offensive weapons as the Cardinals were ranked #6. So, if Murray had remained in the desert, he would have had plenty of offensive help. But the Vikings ranked #8, which means he is on a really good offensive unit.View LinkThe Vikings see Murray as the answer to their most important position.OConnell added:As he knows, hes holding the pen on his story, and were going to support him and try to help him continue to improve as a young player at the most difficult position in sports.Although on a one-year deal, if Murray plays well and remains vertical, a new contract will certainly be announced sometime in December to keep him in-house for the long run.Their offense is predicated on a running quarterback and shorter passing plays with heavy tight end usage. The coaching staff has already fused formations and concepts that suit what Murray does best.The other quarterbacks on the roster besides Murray and McCarthy are Carson Wentz and Max Brosmer. Most NFL clubs will retain three signalcallers on their main roster and at least one on the practice squad.
