Yankees small ball prevails late in grind-out series-opening win over Mariners
NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AUGUST 11: Trent Grisham #12 of the New York Yankees heads for second base in the third inning against the Seattle Mariners at Yankee Stadium on August 11, 2026 in the Bronx borough of New York City. (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesThe Yankees are struggling offensively. The Yankees do not hit with runners in scoring position. The Yankees have been too homer-reliant. All three of these tenets are true, especially since the injury bug swept through the Bronx and left them more vulnerable than theyve been in several years. All of their wins and losses are decided by one or two runs. They get excellent pitching, but regardless of the quality of the opposing starter, they often fail to dent home plate due to their middling healthy power options and their struggles with RISP. Since June 18th, they have been batting an absolutely dreadful .170 in these situations, by far the worst in baseball. They are also striking out a league-high 29.4 percent in these spots, limiting opportunities for productive outs. This game was going like all the others. They squandered three massive opportunities with runners in scoring position off Bryan Woo early on before going down in order in three consecutive innings. Now trailing 1-0 after one measly run scored off a sharp Ryan Weathers, they got one more chance in the seventh and didnt let it go to waste. Two unlikely sources provided two great pieces of hitting to small ball their way to a four-run inning and a 4-1 win.Weathers started this one out looking to continue the good vibes hes had on the bump lately and quickly retired the first two he faced before jumping ahead 0-2 on Julio Rodriguez before throwing four straight balls and walking him. Things mightve gotten hairy with a Dominic Canzone grounder that hit the second base bag if not for a stellar barehanded play by George Lombard Jr., who continues to be a savant defensively.View LinkWoos always done well against the Yankees, but it was a struggle to put up a zero in the first. A one-out walk by Ben Rice and a two-out double by Luis Garca Jr. set things up for Jazz Chisholm Jr., who worked a nine-pitch at-bat that included a 400-foot foul ball, but he flew out to the warning track in left-center field. Woo threw 32 pitches, allowed three batted balls of at least 101 mph, and didnt get a single whiff, yet didnt allow a run. Maybe the fact that he threw the five hardest pitches of his entire career that inning helps. An infield single and a two-out walk to Weston Wilson gave Seattle a chance with a runner in scoring position in the second, but a nice stab by Garca at first on a Colt Emerson grounder ended a lengthy top of the second. Lombard led off the second with a single but was stranded after Taylor Wards leaping catch robbed Ryan McMahon of extra bases and the rookie was gunned down by Cal Raleigh trying to steal his first MLB bag.A much quicker 1-2-3 third inning by Weathers gave the offense another chance to work off Woo, who they continued to get good swings off of. Austin Wells just yanked a long foul ball before grounding out, and Trent Grisham doubled into the corner at the end of a long at-bat, but the RISP woes continued as Rice struck out and Heliot Ramos grounded out to strand the runner. Both offenses had their chances in the first few innings as the two starters labored, but once they got in a groove, neither threatened. Weathers retired 10 in a row, while Woo went from throwing 73 pitches in three tough innings to coasting through the final two, settling in after looking doomed early. Two struggling offenses certainly looked the part on Tuesday night. By the laws of the game, someone had to score first, and the first blow was struck in the sixth on an opposite-field home run by longtime Yankee killer Randy Arozarena, one of the only hitters not currently loathed in Seattle for lack of production. After a week full of balls dying on the warning track, seeing a swing like that get out felt like a bigger gut punch than we actually saw on the scoreboard. Weathers departed after walking Dominic Canzone, finishing 5.2 strong innings but being in line for the loss.View LinkTim Hill got the last out of the sixth before Seattle went to their bullpen, going to Jose A. Ferrer against the top of the order, who went down quietly. Hill got through the seventh quickly in whats been maybe his best outing since April, allowing the offense to wake up in the seventh. Garca roped a leadoff double off Michael Rucker and was singled to third by Chisholm. Lombard struck out, Spencer Jones walked to load the bases with one out, and you just sat there wondering if they could finally break through. McMahon, likely still steaming from the robbery earlier, answered.View LinkHis two-run single made it 2-1 and chased Rucker. With two on and one out, Eduard Bazardo gave up a first-pitch blooper to Wells that Ward seemed terribly positioned for, setting up Grisham for a two-run knock of his own to left field to make it 4-1. Rice and Ramos stranded the remaining runners, but the offense finally did their jobs.View LinkBrent Headrick was the first to come out and protect the newfound lead, doing so expeditiously. Seranthony Dominguez got this game to the ninth with a weird 1-2-3 inning that saw Chisholm overturn a strikeout before getting picked off a solid 15 seconds later. Thats been his season in a nutshell. Lombard also worked a long, 12-pitch at-bat for good measure.David Bednar came on for the save against the heart of the order with a three-run cushion. He Kd J-Rod, allowed Canzone to reach on an infield single, got a nice force out from Jazz on a redemption play, and Kd the once-MVP candidate Raleigh to lock down his 17th consecutive save. With the loss by Boston, the Yankees are now three games clear of their rivals to the north, but would need a favor from the lowly As to gain ground in the AL East.View LinkThe Yankees go for the series victory tomorrow night at 7:05 pm in the middle game of this three-game set against the Mariners. Itll be Will Warren against Bryce Miller on ESPN.Box Score

Yankees' Jazz Chisholm, after challenging his way on base, immediately gets picked off after lapse in win vs. Mariners
Whether it was due to a slip or just a brief mental lapse, Jazz Chisholm completely blew a successful challenge on Tuesday night.Chisholm, in the eighth inning of the New York Yankees 4-1 win over the Seattle Mariners, drew a walk after successfully challenging what was initially called the third strike while he was up to bat. The ball was clearly outside of the strike zone after a review, so the Yankees star made his way over to first. But immediately, Chisholm stumbled. He was caught way too far off the bag, and was easily tagged out by the Mariners in a half-hearted pickle. Just watch:Jazz Chisholm Jr. was awarded a walk after winning an ABS challenge, but was then immediately picked off once he reached 1st. pic.twitter.com/Weuil44VI0 FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) August 12, 2026Not great. Now, it didnt cost the Yankees the game by any means. They were up by three at the time, thanks to a four-run inning in the previous frame powered by RBI singles from Ryan McMahon and Trent Grisham. Because of that, its likely to cause far less stir than the lollipop scandal he found himself in back in June. But still, it was a rough moment for Chisholm. The 28-year-old entered the night with a .216 batting average, which is his worst since his rookie season with the Miami Marlins back in 2020, with 17 home runs and 47 RBI on the year. He had a hit and scored in the win on Tuesday night, too.The win pushed the Yankees to 67-52 on the season. They currently sit in second in the NL East race, just a handful of games back from the Tampa Bay Rays, and hold a safe lead in the AL wild card race. While they seem well on their way to making a third straight postseason appearance, and the divisional title isnt out of play, lapses like the one Chisholm made on Tuesday night will only become costlier as the season wraps up.

Dana White explains why hes not ready to crown Islam Makhachev as the GOAT just yet
NEW YORK, NEW YORK - NOVEMBER 15: Islam Makhachev of Russia reacts to his win over Jack Della Maddalena of Australia in the UFC welterweight championship fight during the UFC 322 event at Madison Square Garden on November 15, 2025 in New York City. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC)Islam Makhachev has a chance to add to his already impressive resume when he defends his welterweight title for the first time at UFC 330 after already setting the record for the most title defenses in UFC lightweight history. As if defending belts in two divisions isnt enough, Makhachev can also break Anderson Silvas record for the most consecutive wins in UFC history with both tied at 16 currently. For everything that Makhachev has achieved, its easy to understand why hes already entering the conversation as possibly the greatest of all-time but UFC CEO Dana White isnt ready to hand him that crown just yet. With Makhachev just days away from facing Ian Machado Garry in the UFC 330 main event, White prefers waiting at least until that fight ends before he starts stacking anymore accolades on Makhachevs resume.I dont think about that stuff until the fight happens, White said during the Contender Series post-fight press conference. When we see his performance on Saturday, lets see how it plays out, but obviously breaking [Anderson Silvas] record, you keep grinding, you keep fighting, you put your head down and just keep f*cking knocking guys down left and right, by the time you say you know what? Im done, then we all figure out where he ends up in the big pictures. Hes on the right path, thats for sure.Makhachev is already the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the sport and he can sit in even more rarified air if he defends his welterweight title on Saturday night. But until that fight happens, White isnt ready to start making any kind of declarations about Makhachev joining the GOAT conversation along other all-time greats like Jon Jones and Georges St-Pierre.Hes got all the things there to be the guy, White said. I think we should talk about this Saturday night after the fight and see what we all thing based on his performance on Saturday and breaking the record.

Shevin Smith Jr. becomes training camp fellow with Tampa Bay Buccaneers before start of BSU season
Aug. 11BEMIDJI There are few reasons to watch the upcoming Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Jets play in their first preseason game this Friday on Aug. 14. But for Bemidji State football fans, they'll be tuning in to get a glimpse of a familiar face on the sidelines. After being a part of theTampa Bay Buccaneers National Coaching Academyfor rookie mini camp in May, Bemidji State co-defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator Shevin Smith Jr. was asked to come back as a 2026 training camp fellow. He's been working with the Buccaneers' special teams units at training camp before traveling with the team for its first preseason game against the Jets on Friday. The Bucs chose five out of the 25 coaches who took part in the coaching academy to become a training camp fellow. Smith was honored to be one of the five asked to come back."It's been really, really fun, been really involved," Smith said of his experience so far. "The coaches have assimilated us to pretty much part of the staff. The players have been great, so it's been a great opportunity to grow as a coach, but also really help the team in camp and helping with all hands on deck."Smith has been working closely with special teams coordinator Danny Smith, who's been coaching in the NFL for over 30 years. He's also been observing specialist players like kickerChase McLaughlin, who's been in the NFL for eight years, and punterRiley Dixon, who's been in the league for 11 years.Smith has made sure to pay attention to their routines to see what he can bring back to help the specialists at Bemidji State."Specialists are pretty unique in that they each have their own routines and are very finicky about stuff, especially punters and kickers," Smith said. "It's cool seeing guys who have done it at a high level, what their routines consist of. Obviously, there's stuff I can probably bring back to our specialists and how they can incorporate the same routines and practices and things into their own game.Naturally, practices are more intense in training camp than what Smith experienced in mini camp. With incoming roster cuts, many players are fighting for their careers and a spot on the 53-man roster.Drills and plays are taught at organized team activities, so during training camp, the coaching staff shifts focus to who can execute them best, Smith explained.A typical day at the Bucs' training camp for Smith starts at 6 a.m. to prepare for practice. The team practices in the morning to beat the notorious Florida heat and rain in August. After practice, the team has time to interact with fans and sign autographs before watching film and having team meetings in the afternoon. In the evening, the team has a walk-through before the day ends.Smith has been with the team since the first day of training camp on July 29. Since then, he's taken note of the level of detail needed at the professional level, from the coaches, players and everyone in the organization."The level of detail needed at this level, you have no choice but to become a better coach, because it's stuff that you don't even think of in college," he said. "Football can become advanced with an older group, but sometimes it's very entry-level because you're just trying to get guys to understand life."Whereas (in Tampa), everybody, for the most part, got their own lives. ... So it's very much in the intricacies of details and super high-level thinking compared to generally what you have in college."Smith will travel with the team for its first preseason game on Friday against the Jets at MetLife Stadium. The team gets back to Tampa at 3 a.m. on Saturday. Smith has a flight five hours later to travel back to Bemidji in time for team pictures."It might be a no-sleep kind of schedule for me," Smith said. "I might have giant bags under my eyes for the team pictures."
