As recently as July 2025 they played out a goalless draw in Stockholm.Their latest encounter is historic because the venue is Croke Park.The 82,300-capacity arena in north Dublin is sold out as it hosts two English clubs for the first time. Association football has not been played at the stadium since 2009. Prior to 2007, it had never been played there at all.A stadium with historyHistorically, Croke Park was viewed as a symbolism of Irish nationalism.Not only did the Gaelic Athletic Association's Rule 42 prevent 'foreign' sports - in reality, the 'English' football and rugby - being played in the stadium, but until 1971 anyone who watched or played them could not be a GAA member.The stadium itself was the scene of a brutal reprisal attack in November 1920, when 14 people, including the Tipperary player Michael Hogan, were killed by British forces, and many more were injured.Earlier in the day, Irish Republican Army leader Michael Collins had planned an attack in the south of Dublin that led to the deaths of 14 people, including 12 men considered by Collins to be the backbone of the British intelligence system in the city.The situation regarding GAA-only sport changed around the time reconstruction work at Lansdowne Road where the Irish soccer and rugby teams played began in 2007.Amid huge debate, the GAA amended Rule 42 to allow Croke Park to be used for association football and rugby on a temporary basis. Then, in 2010, when Aviva Stadium was opened on the Lansdowne Road site, the policy of allowing use of Croke Park for other games on a case-by-case basis was made permanent."Games like rugby and soccer were seen as being imperialistic or not part of our native culture," explains Peter McKenna, Croke Park's stadium and commercial director, in a chat with BBC Sport."In order to maintain membership, there was the so-called ban. Things change over time, people become more mature and more flexible. The fact Brian O'Driscoll's side won easily made it, from an Irish perspective, the perfect day.There were complaints, as Sean Kelly, president of GAA between 2003 and 2006, recounted on www.the42.ie this week."I remember one of them carried a placard while wearing a Celtic jersey [that read]: 'No foreign games in Croke Park.' Another one carried a jersey saying, Sean 'Judas' Kelly," he said."Most people accepted it. But to this day, some do not. And even at Congress this year, I went up to two fellas I hadn't seen for a while. One of them shook hands with me. The other said: 'I don't shake hands with you, you let the Brits into Croke Park.' Passaic enters the 2026 football season at a crossroads.The Indians have played in a postseason tournament each of the past three years. Granted, 2023 concluded in the North Group 5 Invitational, a consolation bracket, but two trips to the NJSIAA playoffs followed.The program had not ventured to three consecutive postseasons of any type since its glory days of the early 1980s. Thats a good sign, regardless.The catch? Each of those stretches featured the top two players on Passaics all-time rushing list: 1984 grad Craig Heyward (5,142 yards) and 2026 grad Justin Griffin (3,568).So, on the surface, it might appear as though the Indians are back at square one. Yet coach Mark Dupree offers a counterpoint.Weve been having All-County running backs [and/or] 1,000-yard rushers since Ive been back here in Passaic, said Dupree, now entering the sixth year of his second tenure. Hopefully, we can keep the tradition going.Next in line for the role of lead tailback is last seasons understudy, rising senior Eddie Hidalgo. He turned 50 carries into 356 yards (7.1 average) and two touchdowns when given opportunities, but when he wasnt in the backfield, Hidalgo started at wideout (11 catches, 131 yards).We had to put him somewhere, so we put him at Z receiver, Dupree said. I mean, Justin is a different animal. But [Eddies] also a clever runner. Hes patient, patient, patient, and then next thing you know, hes gone. So, I feel confident that hes going to have a good season.The traditionThe ground game has been Passaics bread and butter seemingly forever. Ironhead Heyward was an integral part of three straight North 1, Group 4 sectional titles from 1981-83, and that first year, he blocked for 1,000-yard rusher Melvin Ross.The 1985 sectional-championship team featured Troy Giles (1,200 yards, 20 TD) although QB Sterling Henton used his legs just as effectively and Jerome Henderson (941 yards, 10 TD) led a three-deep backfield during its 1989 title run.Griffin is now at Monmouth after propelling the Indians to eight wins as a junior and senior their best two-season total since 2018-19.The challengeTwo lineup dilemmas have been the biggest challenges to Passaic in the preseason. Incumbent quarterback Jamari Miller (60% completions, 381 yards) is being pushed by rising sophomore Justin Pimentel, though rare is the coach whod mind having extra depth at the position.However, Pimentel has yet to play in a varsity game, meaning he is still kind of raw, but at least hes picking up things quicker than average, Dupree said. Hes showing some promise.The bigger need for depth is at the offensive skill positions.All-Passaic linebackers Ryan Valdez (second team) and Kendrick Fernandez (honorable mention) may be asked to do more running and receiving, and although Fernandez was the top receiver in 2025 (14 catches, 166 yards), the coach would prefer to give them a breather when the offense takes the field.Theyve been starting since they were sophomores, and theyre loyal, Dupree said of the duo. They come out, and they work hard, but if just one of them goes down, its like, oh my gosh, what are we going to do?We need to keep those two guys healthy so we need to develop kids who might not have experience [yet].ExpectationsAnother state-playoff bid may take serious maturation from a currently inexperienced roster. The Indians should be evenly matched with several of their early opponents but things pick up sharply at the end, especially with Wayne Valley and Ridgewood set to visit.With this upcoming schedule, we as coaches have got to be on our game, Dupree said. Because these [opponents] are good and well-coached, so weve got to match their level.I feel like its challenging, in a good way, though. Now, the Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies will renew the special event at the updated stadium, with Netflix broadcasting the game for the first time.As Netflix only has three events during the baseball season, the streaming service has put together a group of media members and former players to help put on this special event. He is the only pitcher on the team, though, which will give him a different perspective than the rest of the analysts. This will mark his second time in the booth with Vasgersian for Netflix.Hunter PencePence is another busy media member lending a voice for this game, as he has worked as an in-game analyst for both Apple and Netflix since retiring. The former outfielder has a strong personality that makes him a great fit as a color commentator, and he joins Rizzo and Vasgersian in the booth for the third time this year.Barry BondsNetflix was able to land Bonds for its MLB slate in the 2026 season despite Bonds not being much of a media personality before. He was a great fit for Opening Day, when the San Francisco Giants hosted, then was a natural during the Home Run Derby. Bonds will conclude his media duties for Netflix on Thursday in Iowa as a pre- and postgame analyst.Albert PujolsSince retiring after the 2022 season, Pujols has worked in the media while he also tries to get into coaching. In the meantime, Pujols works for MLB Network and will once again be a studio analyst for Netflix alongside Bonds at the Field of Dreams game.Anthony RizzoRizzo has been all over the media this year, working baseball games for both Netflix and NBC since the start of the season. Rizzo will be the third and final member of the analyst desk, but he has more recent experience, having worked for NBC this summer. Rizzo was on the Yankees when they played in the first-ever Field of Dreams game in 2021, although he himself didn't play.Elle DuncanDuncan is in her first year with Netflix, working as a multi-sport host for the streaming service. This will be her third baseball event of the season, and afterwards she will turn her focus towards Netflix's football slate during the NFL season.Lauren ShehadiShehadi will work as the on-field reporter during the game, as she did for Opening Day and the Home Run Derby. She serves the same role for TBS and has been a staple on MLB Network as both an on-field reporter and a show host.Kevin CostnerThis event's special guest Kevin Costner, who starred in the movie as Ray Kinsella back in 1982. Costner will be part of the pregame ceremony as Netflix and MLB honors the movie.
