Stephanie Whites impassioned speech can be a crucial inflection point in WNBA season | Opinion
Stephanie White said it. The Indiana Fever proved it. Good thing they did. Before the Fever's 106-92 win over the New York Liberty on Tuesday night, White had this to say to reporters: "The hate, the fear-mongering, the divisiveness, the stuff trying to hijack our league will not win. We are united. We are connected. We will not be divided." To this point in the season, none of that has appeared to be true about the WNBA.It wasnt until the Fever throttled the Liberty that Whites pregame statement took on greater meaning. Because Indiana's performance backed up the coachs words in what could prove to be a crucial inflection point in the season. Without that win, Whites words wouldnt have landed nearly as well. Because as impassioned as she was, her statement was more optimism than reality. The online community she was addressing has been winning. Its the reason White was compelled to give a statement in the first place. Fever fans booed her before the game, all because of a narrative White doesnt support her players after what she said about Dijonai Carrington's Flagrant 2 foul on Sophie Cunningham.Stephanie White made the following statement before tonight's game: pic.twitter.com/VkYThRldsu Indiana Fever (@IndianaFever) August 11, 2026"I take personally any suggestions that I dont 100% always have my players back. I ride with them 10 toes down all the time," White said. This is just one of many times an internet narrative has had a real-world effect in the W. In July, after a hard foul on Caitlin Clark set the online community ablaze, lawmakers sent a letter to WNBA commissioner Cathy Englebert demanding the league take accountability. This week, the WNBA is holding a meeting with its anti-hate taskforce that will include a conversation about transgender participation because internet trolls turned the non-issue into something the league has to feign worry about. And the transgender topic, sparked by Cunninghams comments in an ESPN profile, revealed a fissure in the so-called unity White spoke of.None of this is to say Whites speech wasnt necessary. The Fever have been ground zero for much of the WNBAs off-court drama. This was one of the first times anyone with the team has directly pushed back against the online nonsense in a meaningful way. But only her players could say how well it was received, and their performance spoke volumes.Caitlin Clark scored 22 points with 10 assists to break her own record for the most 20-10 games in a season. Kelsey Mitchell scored a game-high 28 points on 11-of-16 shooting. In a battle of title contenders, the Fever led by as much as 21 and won by 14.If that wasnt enough, Clark also used her words to support her coach."I can assure you there was no way we were losing this game tonight," Clark said. "And I told her that before the game. There was no way we were losing this game for her. And its tough. Thats my head coach. I hated that our fans booed her before the game. That made me a little sick to be honest. And you can disagree and this and that, and I get it, its professional sports. People are going to boo. But at the end of the day, thats our head coach, and were going to ride for her and were always going to have her back."Whites speech and her teams support of it were exactly what was needed to reset the league and bring the focus back to basketball. The only question is how long we allow it to stay there.J.J. McCarthy loses Vikings starting jobJ.J. McCarthy lost the Minnesota Vikings quarterback competition to Kyler Murray. But FTW's Christian D'Andrea doesn't think the 2024 first-round pick is completely cooked yet:"McCarthy is 23 years old. He was always a curious choice for an air-it-out offense because that was never the focus of his Michigan teams. His national champion Wolverines ran the ball more than 60 percent of the time -- a balance that was not going to be replicated in the NFL, but still could have been useful for a team with a bellcow RB1. While the Vikings have two nice pieces in Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason, they lacked the kind of ground game that would have freed up more single coverage. This would have created an easier path to the contingency plan of 'heck, Justin Jefferson's down there somewhere.'"This isn't a full-out defense of McCarthy, but it does leave room for some optimism about his future.Quick hits: Tony Romo update ... 'Selling Spence would be regressive' - fans on Inter talks
[BBC][Getty Images]We asked you whether Tottenham selling Djed Spence to Inter Milan in a deal worth a minimum 25.6m (30m euros) is a wise decision. Here are some of your comments:Alistair: No. Seems mad, he's been developed into an elite attacking full-back to pair with Pedro Porro and now he's going. Destiny Udogie is too injury prone. What an odd choice, especially if he wants to stay.Anthony: I definitely don't think it is wise that my team sell Djed Spence. I have always liked him, he's a good defender and he will only get better and better - keep, keep, keep.Keef: This makes no sense at all. I know he wants first-team football, and Roberto de Zerbi can't guarantee that. However, if we have an injury (which we will), we are lacking any credible cover if we sell him. For the fee being quoted, it seems very cheap too.Ross: Given his age, experience, versatility and off the back of solid World Cup performances, the fee for Spence seems way too low to warrant considering selling him.Rob: Selling Spence makes no sense when he had a great World Cup and was one of the better performers last year. Excited for new season but selling Spence would be a regressive step given his versatility.Peter: I don't want him to go but I think that's a positive step for him and his career and I wish him well, but the reason he's gone is because we can get a grip for two-seasons-in-a-row.Tom: It makes total sense as he will want to keep his England place. But he's not first choice at right-back (Porro) or left-back (Udogie/Andy Robertson), for a season where we have no European games. Meanwhile, our attack desperately needs attention. Makes sense to cash in now and let him move to a team where he will start.Ian: You cannot keep a player who wants to leave, simple as that. If the guy wants to go, let him go. The thing is, they should have treated him better in the first place.

Raiders plan to give top pick Fernando Mendoza 'plenty of experience' in Thursday's preseason opener
The Las Vegas Raiders dont want to start Fernando Mendoza to begin the regular season. But curious fans should get a long look at him in the preseason. Raiders coach Klint Kubiak confirmed that Mendoza will play in Thursdays preseason opener at home against the Arizona Cardinals. The first overall pick in this years NFL Draft will get "plenty of experience in the game though he didnt specify how much Mendoza will play, via the teams site. "Look forward to seeing him out there with his teammates," Kubiak said, according to Raiders.com. "Lot of guys that we need to evaluate but he'll get plenty of reps."Considering the Raiders plan to have Kirk Cousins begin the season as their starter, Mendoza might be the top must-watch player this preseason. Fernando Mendoza of the Las Vegas Raiders is expected to get his first NFL action on Thursday vs. Arizona. (Photo by Ian Maule/Getty Images)Ian Maule via Getty ImagesFernando Mendoza to take 1st NFL snapsKubiak said the starters will play Thursday, which presumably means that Cousins will get a series or two. Then Mendoza should enter, though Kubiak isnt sharing his plan. Aidan OConnell is still on the Raiders roster and should play too. Its not out of the question Mendoza could play so well in preseason that he wins the starting job for Week 1 recent history has a examples of teams wanting to go with a veteran QB to start the season only to change their minds quickly due to the presence of a highly drafted rookie but most likely Mendoza is auditioning for his shot to come sooner rather than later. A strong preseason from Mendoza, who has plenty of experience after leading Indiana to a national title, could increase the pressure on the organization to turn to Mendoza early in the season. Cousins is a solid veteran and could keep Mendoza on the bench for a long time if he plays well, but the urge to find out what the future of the franchise can do is always strong. Weve seen the rhetoric surrounding rookie Carson Beck starting soon for the Arizona Cardinals ramp up after one good half in the Hall of Fame Game. Coincidentally, Beck should see more time on Thursday against Mendozas Raiders. Beck is just a third-round pick. If the top overall pick plays as well as Beck did last week, the hype will blow away what weve heard about Beck the past week. Mendoza has some struggles in campReports on Mendozas camp have been mixed. ESPNs Ryan McFadden wrote that Mendoza has a good grasp of the offense and has shown good accuracy, but he has also has his fair share of struggles including some off-target throws, getting the offense lined up properly and handling snaps. He is still adjusting to taking snaps under center, something he rarely did in college. And hes a rookie; some issues are to be expected. There will never be a perfect game or a perfect practice, Kubiak said early in camp. I think he's doing a good job. I don't expect him to be perfect right now."There will be issues in Thursdays preseason game, It will be Mendozas first time on an NFL field for game action. What matters more is if Mendoza flashes the upside that the Raiders fell in love with when they decided to take a shot on him as their future franchise quarterback. There will be plenty to watch over the preseason as it gets fully going this week. Mendozas progress might be No. 1 on that list.
