Benjamin Morrison returned to practice Wednesday, giving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' cornerback an important opportunity to get back into the mix after missing a significant portion of training camp. Morrison's return comes at an interesting point in the competition for playing time. While he has the talent to compete for a starting role, the time he has missed has given several other defensive backs valuable repetitions and a chance to make their own cases.Morrison entered the offseason as one of the more intriguing young players in Tampa Bay's secondary. After being selected in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, the former Notre Dame standout was expected to have an opportunity to compete for meaningful snaps right away. However, injuries have limited his time on the field.While Morrison was sidelined, players such as Keionte Scott, Ayden Garnes, and Damarion Williams have taken advantage of their opportunities. Garnes has recorded an interception while working with the first-team defense, while Williams recently intercepted Jets quarterback Geno Smith during joint practice. Morrison's return doesn't necessarily mean his opportunity to compete for a starting position is gone. There is still time for him to work his way back into the rotation, and his previous experience and ability could help him make up ground quickly.At the same time, the competition may look different than it did when training camp began. The players who have received additional opportunities while Morrison was out have given the coaching staff more options to consider. If they continue performing well, Morrison will have to earn his way back into the conversation rather than simply returning to his previous position on the depth chart. The team needs reliable depth at the position, and Morrison's return only adds another option to the group. Something is wrong with Paul Skenes. That much is indisputable.The reigning NL Cy Young, just 24 years old, has looked diminished for a while now still capable but noticeably below the supersonic standard he set during his first two big-league seasons. A slight but certain dip in his fastball velocity has accompanied a similar decline in his statistical output. Between mid-May and early July, the Pirates lost nine of Skenes starts. Yet patience seemed prudent. This was still one of the best in the business. Skenes would get things sorted. How could he not?But in the big mans most recent showing, a five-inning trudge on Tuesday in Miami, those yellow flags turned scarlet. His four-seam fastball velocity dipped to a career single-game low of 95.7 mph, nearly a tick and a half below his previous start. Most telling, however, was the outings briefness. Pittsburgh skipper Don Kelly removed Skenes after just five innings and 65 pitches, sparking speculation about a potential injury.After the game, yet another soul-crushing defeat for the down-and-out Pirates, Kelly offered a fragile endorsement of his hurlers health.Anybody this time of year is . not injured, but guys in August arent 100 percent, Kelly said, per MLB.com. It wasnt injury-related that he came out.Just a few months ago, the idea of a hale Skenes being yanked on such a low pitch count in a close game would have been downright inconceivable. Remember, this guy wasnt just good; he was extraordinary beyond compare.Across 2024 and 2025, Skenes delivered the single greatest two-year start to a pitching career in MLB history. Over 320 2/3 frames, the 2023 No. 1 pick posted a microscopic 1.96 ERA over 55 starts with nearly 11 strikeouts per nine innings. Statistically speaking, nobody in the long and winding baseball story had ever been that good out of the shoot. Skenes was imposing, untouchable, inevitable, indomitable. A bully, a star, an ace.Now, Skenes 3.88 season ERA ranks 37th out of 58 qualified starting pitchers. The peripherals look somewhat rosier hes still racking up strikeouts at an elite clip but its impossible to argue that everything is hunky-dory.So what, exactly, is wrong? Lets flip through the possibilities.1. Skenes is injuredCall it Occams Scalpel: Any pitcher under 30 years old with a track record of success who experiences a significant dip in velocity or a prolonged dip in effectiveness is probably hurt. Surgery is usually the fix, the long path back to ones best self.Theres definitely an element of fatalistic laziness in directing any underperforming pitcher to an MRI machine or operating table. But thats the unfortunate reality of baseballs modern age, in which elbow ligaments are interchangeable and surgeons are celebrities. Pitchers are throwing harder than ever, so they break more than ever. At least were better than ever at putting them back together again.Skenes and his skipper have repeatedly denied the presence of a significant injury, but that doesnt mean theres not some type of physical ailment hampering him. As Kelly alluded to, pitchers play through discomfort all the time. Knowing the difference between an ache you play through and an injury you dont is a massive part of being a big leaguer. Most pitchers arms would make an MRI machine fritz and sizzle. Its all about pain tolerance and performance.With this being such a critical campaign for the Pittsburgh Pirates, a club that entered 2026 with legitimate playoff expectations for the first time in Skenes tenure, it makes sense that the face of the franchise might be hesitant to accept an IL stint. That would be both commendable and foolhardy. After all, even this reduced version of Skenes is better than whatever depth option would fill his rotation spot.2. Theres a mechanical issuePitchers, like people, often change over time. Thats not inherently a bad thing. Bodies evolve; the game does, too. Over-analyzing and over-indexing mechanical minutiae across seasons or starts, particularly for a layman, can be a fool's errand.Yet its strikingly clear that Skenes is moving differently than he used to.Not a pitching coach, but easy to spot some differences between 2026 Skenes and 2024 Skenes.Arm path has gotten longer and he's way more rotational than he used to be. For whatever reason, 2026 Skenes is employing a significantly longer arm path than 2024 Skenes. This has probably led to a downtick in deception; hitters are able to see his throwing hand clearer and for longer, making the baseball easier to pick up.Skenes is also significantly more rotational now than he used to be, moving more like a swivel chair and less like a windmill. Thats likely the cause behind his longer arm path; issues with the lower half are often the root cause of issues with the upper half. Because hes sinking deeper into his back leg, hes forcing himself to be more rotational to escape that position, which is in turn leading to the arm path.These changes could be intentional or accidental. Perhaps Skenes wanted to adopt a more natural, free-flowing arm path to try to avoid the injury woes that have befallen shorter-arm-path guys such as Spencer Strider, Lucas Giolito and Joe Musgrove. Perhaps general wear and tear have stiffened his shoulder or elbow, necessitating a longer path. Perhaps this is all inadvertent.3. The workload has gotten to himIts hard to believe, but Paul Skenes is two months younger than Jacob Misiorowski.Skenes arrived in The Show fully formed, with the body of a moose and the deep, rumbling voice of a race car engine. Meanwhile, Milwaukees flame-throwing phenom debuted a year after Skenes and has the face, Pokemon collection and comportment of a 12-year-old. Another key difference between last years Cy Young winner and this years Cy Young favorite is the workload restrictions that have been placed upon them.At first, the Pirates were cautious with Skenes. He barely threw in pro ball in the months after he was drafted in 2023. Pittsburgh got some heat in 2024 for sending Skenes to Triple-A in order to limit his innings. In seven minor-league outings, he went above 66 pitches just twice and never surpassed 75. But as soon as Skenes arrived in the bigs, the training wheels came off. Since his debut on May 11, 2024, Pittsburghs right-handed hope has thrown the seventh-most pitches in MLB.Misiorowski, by comparison, ranks 62nd in regular-season pitches thrown in the 14 months since his debut. Skenes, over a similar span following his first MLB outing, ranked 13th.Compared to the aces of yesteryear, these inning and pitch totals are childs play. But those on-mound ancestors werent stretching their ligaments asunder to squeeze every last drop of velocity out of every single pitch. Skenes was and still is. The Pirates rode him hard because, by all indications, he was up to the challenge.Plus, he and the team knew they needed every last one of his innings to have a shot at contending. Skenes and his massive frame looked custom-built to carry 200 innings a year. But theres a decent chance the big guy needs to dial back the workload. These days, theres no shame in that.4. Hes out of shapeDont believe the bloviating radio shock jocks: Those paparazzi photos of a shirtless Skenes strolling the beach are not an actual data point. Our society loves overreacting to zoomed-in, unflattering photos of professional athletes, and Skenes is merely the latest victim of this unsavory trend. Also, a larger body does not inherently imply an out-of-shape individual. Remember, CC Sabathia is in the Hall of Fame.And despite all the public responsibilities and opportunities associated with his ascending celebrity, Skenes is famously finicky about his offseason regimen. For instance, he agreed to appear at a Fanatics Super Bowl party only if he could secure time at a qualified training facility nearby. Its patently unfair to imply that Skenes is phoning it in or letting himself go.But while its impossible to imagine Skenes under-training, it is possible to imagine a scenario in which he over-trained or mis-trained. Not every offseason plan works. Maybe Skenes threw too much or too little last winter. Maybe he spent too much time on cardio and not enough time on the squat rack. Maybe that water bag drill he loves is why hes over-rotating. Who knows? Maybe this winter hell pull a Victor Wembanyama and spend a few weeks at a monastery in rural China.No matter the reason or combination of reasons for his recent averageness, it would be shortsighted and irrational to give up on Skenes as a front-line arm. Still 24 years old, this man is neither cooked nor unc. He is simply too athletic, too intelligent and too driven to be this mediocre for the long haul.That said, Skenes and the Pirates pitching apparatus deserve some criticism for what has transpired this season. Barring a late-season heater, this Buccos season will go down as one of the most disappointing in franchise history. Thats saying something. Skenes was supposed to lead the line, pushing Pittsburgh back to the postseason. And while hes not responsible for most of the shortcomings infecting this franchise, a repeat of his 2025 wouldve had the Pirates in the postseason hunt.Baseball history is littered with flashes in the pan, pitchers who shined bright only to fade quickly. Injuries, more often than not, were the culprit in those scenarios. Accordingly, that remains the only long-term concern for Skenes. But if he is healthy, a full offseason of rest and tinkering and resetting should get him back on track.Sadly, for the 2026 Pirates, itll be too late.

They have completed their review of what they are calling the Lost Marsh site, and they are doing their due diligence on the Wolf Lake Terminal site. They could merge the two options together in some way."Even though weve had occasional meetings with the state of Illinois, our sole focus at this point in time is working on a world-class stadium and mixed-use development in Hammond, Indiana, team President Kevin Warren said Thursday.The Bears also had been considering Arlington Heights about 30 miles northwest of Chicago as a potential location for an enclosed stadium. Wherever they end up, a name change is off the table.We will be the Chicago Bears whether were in Arlington or whether were in Hammond, chairman George McCaskey said. The Bears, a charter NFL franchise, have played in Illinois since the teams founding in 1920 as the Decatur Staleys. They moved to Chicago in 1921 and called Wrigley Field home before they started playing at Soldier Field in September 1971.The Bears lease runs through 2033, but they can pay a fee to break the lease early. Soldier Field is about 40 miles south of Halas Hall the teams headquarters in Lake Forest and Hammond is about 20 miles south of the teams lakefront stadium.McCaskey acknowledged the anxiety of a move to northwest Indiana for the team's fans.But when Ive driven that route, other than a sign telling me so, I wouldnt know that Ive just crossed the state border, he said. And as Kevin said, once people see the building, once they get in there, once they understand that our top priority from day one was a world-class stadium experience, we think well make that adjustment. We think Bears fans are up for that.The Bears ramped up their focus on Indiana after a proposal to provide financial incentives for the team to build its new home in Illinois stalled in the state legislature. A committee in the Indiana House of Representatives passed a bill in February that established a Northwest Indiana Stadium Authority to finance, construct and lease a stadium.The Illinois Senate passed a bill that would have cleared the way for Arlington Heights and Chicago to create local stadium authorities, creating a pathway for the Bears to avoid paying property taxes on a new stadium. But the House adjourned without taking up the measure on the last day of the states spring legislative session.McCaskey said the team has had minimal conversations with Illinois legislators since June. Sure, its August preseason football, but as Tom Wambsgans once said, a man of dying of thirst cant suddenly be a mineral water critic.The ink on training camp storylines is still wet, and these preseason tilts can help dry it (or make teams perhaps start thinking about a whole new piece of parchment to write on). I looked at the crop of games for the first week of preseason (apologies to the Hall of Fame Game) and picked out the battles, storylines, and players that Ill be keeping an eye on as the 2026 NFL (pre)season has its opening flourish.Lions vs. BengalsThe Lions offensive line has been the tip of the spear for the entire franchise since Dan Campbell arrived in Detroit. After Frank Ragnow was forced into an early retirement because of a litany of injuries, Graham Glasgow was tabbed as the next pivot up. After shaky results in 2025, the Lions added (relatively big) free agent signing Cade Mays from the Panthers to hold the fort down in the middle. Now Mays is slated to miss an extended period of time after injuring his wrist. And Juice Scruggs, acquired in the offseason David Montgomery trade, is also battling an injury in training camp. So now its Seth McLaughlin as the next behind for Jared Goff to put his hands under with the Lions first team offense. McLaughlin, who has recovered from a late college career Achilles injury, along with first round selection Blake Miller at right tackle, will be two of the new faces that we will see upfront in the preseason who will have a big part in deciding how far the Lions will go this season.Maybe well see Isaac TeSlaa pull off a cool catch or two, too.Packers vs. SteelersI gotta be honest, no Max Iheanachor is a bummer. For the Packers, though, Ill be watching MarShawn Lloyd. Lloyd has had a brutal run of injuries to start his NFL career, but is slated to play this preseason, and an opportunity is forming for him the Packers backfield with injuries cropping up for Josh Jacobs and an off-field incident as well. Any momentum Lloyd builds up this preseason can easily continue into the regular season, with plenty of touches available because of dearth of options in the Packers running back room.Colts vs. PatriotsThe Colts will be displaying their wares in the first preseason game for the rest of the NFL to see. Anthony Richardson will be making the start against the Colts before Riley Leonard takes over in the second half (the Colts will flip the rotation next week against the Falcons). The Colts are still protecting Daniel Jones and his Achilles, so this much playing time to both backups has a benefit of creating a contingency plan in case Jones recovery doesnt somehow go as planned (consider me a skeptic about where Jones is actually at on the recovery timeline and what that means for his actual play level in 2026, especially early in the season). It also gives the Colts the ability to showcase Richardson to the rest of the NFL. The Colts have quite obviously cooled on Richardson, and his stock league-wide is seemingly also at its nadir, but he could be worth a very interesting dart throw (at least more interesting to me instead of the usual veteran or former washout that teams like to swap spit over) for a team attempting to have semblance of a project to work with or a high variance backup to trot out there in case of emergency.The Patriots also have interesting rookies that Im keeping an eye on. We could get our first glimpse at Caleb Lomus early development as well as Eli Raridon, a tight end Im particularly high on who could help the Patriots offense be more dangerous, and yes, Im going to say it, multiple, with their personnel groupings. Raridon has blocking chops and has the size and athletic ability to be a plus pass catcher, too. Hes reportedly been a training camp standout so far and Im interested to see how well his blocking has translated from college to the pros. The Patriots could have a real find in the third round if so.Chargers vs. TexansAny hint of what this new Chargers offense will look like under Mike McDaniel? Or this Chargers defense under Chris OLeary? OLeary used a more attacking style of defense while at Western Michigan, and Im curious if that was because of the lack of high-end talent for the Broncos, or if he continues to use more blitzes than his predecessor, Jesse Minter. For a simple comparison, Minter blitzed at a 30th percentile rate in his last year at Michigan in 2023. He then proceeded to prefer more creeper and simulated pressures, which only bring four pass rushers, and was more selective with his blitzing (he was very successful as a play-caller, mind you). OLeary, on the other hand, blitzed at an 80th percentile rate in his lone season in Kalamazoo. The structures of their defenses are similar, but the knobs appear to be turned differently.Alas, its preseason. Time for the vanilla schemes of Day 1 and Day 2 install plays. So this might all be for naught anyway. If youre looking for more specific players to watch: First rounder pick Akheem Mesidor and second-round selection Jake Slaughter can both help swing this season for the Chargers as an injection of pass rush ability and as the starting left guard. Positive performances from both would be an exciting first step for the Chargers.Cardinals vs. RaidersTwo of the top 3 picks! And I was going to include the early preseason starlet Carson Beck, but he got ruled out of Thursdays game with a rib injury. No. 1 selection Fernando Mendoza might not be starting the regular season for the Raiders, but he sure is starting the preseason. His skill set should translate nicely to Klint Kubiaks offense, and we get our first glimpse of that pairing.Jeremiyah Love didnt play in the Hall of Fame Game last week, but he is slated to make his Cardinals (preseason) debut. Im interested in the Cardinals offense under Mike LaFleur and think he will do a good job of highlighting the actually pretty strong group of skill players that Arizona has. This offense wants to hide its tendencies by having a running back that can stay on the field for all four downs, and Love can do that in spades.Browns vs. BearsThe quarterback battle eats up a lot of the bandwidth when the Browns are discussed, but theres some real things brewing in Cleveland right now.On the offensive side of the ball, it hasnt been hard to hear the ooos and ahhhs that have been coming out of Browns training camp when Denzel Boston has been on the field and making plays on the football (buy stock now before its too late!). And there have been similar sounds with the plays KC Concepcion has been making. Both are already earning playing time with the first team, which shouldnt have been too hard given what else the Browns have in the wide receiver room, but its also not a bad sign both have earned their roles so early. A couple of snatches in their first preseason action will only bolster the confidence Browns coaches have in Concepcion and (especially in) Boston.The newly shaped Browns offensive line will also be compelling to watch this season, and could make for an even tastier situation for a young quarterback to be dropped into. No matter the snap count, any glimpses at Browns rookie linemen Spencer Fano, Austin Barber, and Parker Brailsford will be fun for the offensive line aficionado to watch in real time and upon film review.And, yes, there is the quarterback battle between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders. Watson will start this weekend against the Bears and get the first half before the quarterbacks switch at halftime. (they will swap roles in their second preseason game next week, and I cant help but notice Sanders got the start at home in Cleveland, by the way). I think the Browns offensive ceiling is capped with either quarterback playing for them in 2026, but maybe their performances under the lights in the preseason will help create a little more optimism at the position. Because I cant help but get excited when looking at all of the young talent the Browns are accumulating (the rookies, Quinshon Judkins, Harold Fannin Jr., kinda fun!).Also look for the heat-seeking missile known as Emmanuel McNeil-Warren when the Browns defense is on the field.Panthers vs. BillsStrictly watching what Jim Leonhard does during his first time as a defensive play-caller in the NFL. Again, VANILLA SCHEME SEASON, but even just the deployment of personnel will be some nice indication of what should be a much more creative scheme in Buffalo.Vikings vs. GiantsDo we get to see the newly anointed starting quarterback Kyler Murray in the Vikings offense? There hasnt been any indication otherwise of Murray not playing, so we will potentially see No. 1 in purple this weekend. Its the beginning of one of the more fascinating pairings and, in my opinion, interesting storylines in the NFL this season. (I wrote about Murrays fit with Kevin OConnell this spring, and I have real optimism of how it might all work out. Consider it like a square peg, rectangle hole fit).Im most interested in seeing what OConnell really plans on how to deploy Murray and the rest of the Vikings offense with him, as OConnell will tweak his concepts based on his quarterbacks preferences. But we will unlikely see much during the month of vanilla schemes. Especially if Justin Jefferson isnt even on the field (Jefferson has quite literally never taken a preseason snap since hes entered the NFL).Also take a peek at the young defenders for the Vikings and Giants (if they play). Its hard to miss Caleb Banks, and Domonique Orange isnt exactly small, either. Jake Golday could be a fun tool for Brian Flores to play with. And the Giants have this guy named Arvell Reese, who should be an absolute weapon for Dennard Wilson to deploy, especially moving him (and Abdul Carter) around on third down.
