Sri Lankan coach dies after altercation with cricketer in Colombo
Veteran Sri Lankan cricket coach and former school mentor Sumith Fernando has died following an altercation involving young players at a cricket facility in Colombo. The coach remembered for mentoring several young cricketers, including current Sri Lanka ODI captain Kusal Mendis during his school days.Dispute over drinking water escalatesAccording to PTI, the incident began when a group of young cricketers training at a sports facility went to get drinking water but found that there was no running water available. A disagreement reportedly broke out between the players and stadium staff over the issue. Fernando, who was present at the venue and had also worked as a curator at the Bloomfield Cricket & Athletic Club, intervened as the situation escalated.Police said a physical confrontation subsequently took place involving two players. A 17-year-old school cricketer was allegedly involved in the altercation, during which Fernando sustained injuries. Cris Cyborg cools retirement talk; remains interested in Ronda Rousey, Claressa Shields fights
Cris Cyborg heads into the final fight of her Professional Fighters League contract on Aug. 22. She takes on Ketlen Vieira at the Benchmark International Arena in Tampa. It had been billed as a retirement fight. A farewell to a sport she had served since 2005, with championship reigns across five organizations, including iconic scraps against Gina Carano, Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes, and 29 wins against just two losses.Cyborg has enjoyed many roles in combat sports over the last 21 years. From a trailblazer to a champion and, ultimately, a legend. But all good careers must come to an end eventually, and PFL announced in June that the Vieira match later this month will be her final MMA fight.Things might not be as final as they first seemed, though.Maybe, it could be my last, Cyborg told Uncrowned from her home office, surrounded by belts she won during her stints fighting in Strikeforce, Invicta, the UFC, Bellator MMA and PFL.At 41 years old, I always think, This could be my last. Im already prepared [but I could] change this. I feel very good. Ive never had a bad injury, and I feel better than when I was 21 years old. So it could be my last fight, this next fight against Ketlen Vieira. But I don't know.I want to do the best I can in this fight. And if it is my last fight in my contract with PFL, I'll get together with my team, my family, and see what the next chapter is. See what I want. And what I feel in my heart. Some fighters feel the curtain calling when the early starts at 4 a.m. begin to take their toll. When its tougher to get out of bed when its raining, while in the warmth under covers, in silk pajamas. But after fights in jiu jitsu, kickboxing, MMA and boxing, Cyborg still enjoys the thrill and preparing for competition.I love what I do, she said. I enjoy every single moment. I love the sport. Being in sports. And competing. I'm happy. I am just doing my best.Cyborg isnt the only pioneering MMA fighter still competing, as she was cageside at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles for Ronda Rouseys return against Carano, who hadnt fought in 17 years, when Cyborg knocked her out in a Strikeforce main event the first time two women headlined a major MMA event.I think she didn't [feel] happy how her career finished, after she lost and she stopped fighting, Cyborg said of Rousey. She returned and got the victory against Carano.Since Rousey and Carano headlined the first Most Valuable Promotions event in MMA, the upstart fight firm merged with PFL, creating a business that has a considerable roster, with expansive broadcast connections and social media power. For Cyborg, its important industry news for fighters because, if their contract expires at a rival organization, theyre going to be taken care of by Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian. They're doing great for boxing, for women's boxing, she said. They really want to make a difference and change the sport. Let's see what's gonna happen. So what could happen? Could Cyborg accept another fight after Vieira?Cyborg and Rousey, after all, could end up on the same platform at MVP MMA and on Netflix.Im ready anytime, Cyborg said about the super-fight that has, thus far, eluded the sport.I dont know if the other side is gonna accept it. She ran from me for so many years, and always had an excuse for it not to happen. I don't think she wants this moment now. I don't think she's ready for that. But Im here. Everything can happen. If you want to make this fight happen, it's gonna be an exciting one for me.Cyborg could also continue to operate in boxing. Her team even extended a $2 million offer to Claressa Shields for a crossover bout a deal Shields rejected. Why?She talks a lot, Cyborg said of Shields. Shes going to fight at 160 pounds and the girl [opponent Kaye Scott] is older than me, less fights than me, and doesnt have a knockout. I have eight fights, most by knockouts. If she wanted to make this fight, we can do it at the end of the year, Cyborg said. We can make it at 154. No excuses. $2 million. Let's do it!Whether Vieira turns out to be farewell or just another chapter, Cyborg doesnt seem ready to hang up the gloves just yet.I'm no easy fighter to beat.

Towns Was Supposed To Get The Ball At The End Of Game 4 And Other Knicks Tidbits
NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 10: Karl-Anthony Towns #32 of the New York Knicks celebrates after his team's 107-106 victory against the San Antonio Spurs in Game Four of the 2026 NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on June 10, 2026 in New York City. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images)Getty ImagesMuch is revealed when a team is finally able to cross the finish line in 1st place. The chats with the media become more lax and the news starts to leak out about what was really going on behind the scenes. There have been a few stories that have been revealed over the last two months that help shine a light on a play, a game, a series or even how a player was feeling. Here are a list of the tidbits you may have missed from the New York Knicks run to a championship:Karl-Anthony TownsTowns was asked about the miraculous game-winning shot from OG Anunoby in Game 4 of the NBA Finals:I was going to dunk it. I seen an OG flying in the sky and I'm like, All right, well, if he tries to tip the ball back in and it goes long and it goes off the front rim, I'm going to dunk it back in. OG made it. It was something special. You know, the play was designed to go to me and then two people guarded me, the inbounder and the person defending me.The account from Towns does check out. No other player has corroborated his comment that the play was originally designed to go to him, but it wouldnt be surprising for a couple of different reasons. Jalen Brunson has Victor Wembanyama guarding him on the perimeter while Towns is being guarded by a smaller defender in Devin Vassell. It is a far easier task to beat a player like Vassell, even though Towns has occasionally had issues taking advantage of forwards. Regardless, DeAaron Fox opted to guard the big man rather than the inbounder which made it nearly impossible to get the ball to Towns.Would he have been able to stuff the ball into the basket had Anunoby missed the shot? Maybe. But for Knicks fans it may be more enjoyable to sit in the reality of what happened. Landry Shamet Shamet was asked about his preparation as a shooter:Game 3 was so weird for me because Im in New York, but it was not my home routine. I eat at 4 p.m. and my hour and a half nap prior to thatIm going to the Garden on a bus? I dont do that. I gotta go at this time? This isnt when I go And honestly that added to some of the anxietyI think there was some advantage to being the road team in these NBA Finals. The media frenzy was on another level for this series, but specifically Game 3 when President Donald Trump attended the game. Shamet doesnt use it as an excuse, but there are plenty of signs that indicate that they were a bit off. They had two ugly turnovers in the first two minutes of the game and were down 11 points entering the 2nd quarter. The road team in this series did quite well, and almost went undefeated. This is the first time since 2019 that the road team won four or more games in the NBA Finals. Well see if this is a trend that will continue moving forward. Deuce McBride McBride was asked about the difficulty of the timing of his surgery:I didnt come back the way I wanted. You know, I was still extremely in pain, said McBride. Were you ever fully healthy the rest of the season? No. Not at all. Man, I was just fighting. Doing whatever I could. I mean, the funny thing about Philly it was probably the worst I felt in Game 4. Like, I was in a lot of pain.It was probably fair to assume at the time that McBride wasnt at full strength when he came back from his hernia surgery in March. The initial reports had him taking 6-8 weeks, and he ended up returning a little before the eight week mark but suffered a setback in one of his first games back. He still had plenty of moments that proved his worth, though. The game he referenced was one of the best of his career and yet he dealt with the most pain in it. The Knicks were looking to close out the series against Philadelphia and McBride helped put his stamp on the series with an absurd seven 3-pointers. The last of those 3-pointers put the Knicks up 30 points in the 3rd quarter, essentially ending the season of the 76ers. This article was originally published on Forbes.com

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER: Riders retention of playbook giving leg up in early practices
At least one change is notable for Hulbert football heading into the season.Over a week into the practice season, things are going very smoothly maybe even more than expected. When the Riders returned from summer break this season, there wasnt much need to re-explain their plays, drills or how they go about practice. The Riders are making early strides in the practice schedule, thanks to retaining what they did in the spring and summer.I will say being this early in the season, everyone kind of knows what theyre doing, HHS head coach Chad Botts said. Over time, you build consistency running the same system year in and year out. We dont really have to explain a lot because theyre carrying over that knowledge from previous seasons.Along with focusing on hunkering down and putting in the work, Botts and his coaching staff are trying to get the Riders to focus on doing the little things correctly. From running the right routes to putting in effort in conditioning, the Riders staff is looking for complete buy-in from the roster.Theyre brining the energy, theyre bringing the focus, so a lot of good positive things, Botts said. There are naturally things we need to work on; we are like any team. The small things, proper steps, make sure we are tackling well, getting good snaps on offense. We want to harp on the little things to get better and better every day.8S4A6455.JPGBo Thayer, left, hands the ball off to running back Hunter Rankin at practice Tuesday, Aug. 11.While the practices have gone smoothly, the Riders are looking to figure out several things on the field. With a healthy class of graduation players leaving the roster, a new dose of contributors is stepping up for the Riders. The roster has grown and grown over the past few years, helping the Riders when those seniors do graduate. Now, the returning players are just trying to find the right groove needed for a team to play well together.I think we have found out each others best attributes and how we can work together to be better, quarterback Bo Thayer said. Its a lot of new players and we are still learning how to play with each other. We are going to work our heart out. We put in everything we have, and we just want to be better and not be OK with losing.8S4A6513.JPGBo Thayer throws a pass during practice Tuesday, Aug. 11.While a lot of the starters are known already, there are still some holes to fill for remaining start spots and prime reserve positions. Built on the running game, the Riders rotated through several runners and lineman at the Tuesday, April 11 practice.Ending with a sped-up play clock, the Riders worked through their running schemes and some pass plays to close out the Tuesday practice.I think were growing a lot as a team, people are starting to step up that should be, Rider running back Hunter Rankin said. I think were finding out who were going to be, offensively and defensively. For about anther week and a half, the Riders will keep hitting the practice before opening the scrimmage season with an exhibition vs. Keys and Cave Springs, Friday, Aug. 21.

Cris Carter thinks Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith is 'gold jacket' bound
Given that the last wide receiver to win the Heisman Trophy was Alabama's DeVonta Smith in 2020, a prediction that Ohio State wide receiverJeremiah Smith will win the award in 2026 is pretty bold. But Ohio State and Pro Football Hall of Famer Cris Carter went further than that. After telling the "Rich Eisen Show" he expects Smith to be named College Football's best player next season, Carter went on to say that he also believes Smith is eventually bound for the Pro Football Hall of Fame."I expect [Smith] to be the third gold jacket that I've ever been associated with and have had a role in their life," Carter told Eisen. As for the other two? Carter noted that he has been associated with Hall of Fame wide receivers Randy Moss and Larry Fitzgerald."Heisman Trophy. ... I expect him to be the third gold jacket that I've been associated with and have had a role in their life."Cris Carter describes how good Ohio State WR Jeremiah Smith is on the @RichEisenShow pic.twitter.com/RjaZDCqI08 ESPN College Football (@ESPNCFB) August 10, 2026"That is his genetic ceiling. He's a combination of Calvin Johnson and Julio Jones, and the disposition like Larry [Fitzgerald]. Like, he's a problem. Only one more time for Michigan, but he is going to be a problem in the National Football League," Carter said. The receivers Carter mentioned are among the best to ever play in the NFL. Fitzgerald was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame last year. He made 11 Pro Bowls and has the second-most receiving yards and receptions in the NFL all-time. Moss, also a six-time Pro Bowler, was a First Team All-Pro player four times and finished his pro career with the second-most touchdowns and fourth-most receiving yards all time. (Jerry Rice holds the all-time NFL records for receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns.)In his first year, Smith broke Carter's four-decades-old records for receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns in a season as a true freshman, registering 76 catches for 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns.Carter said he's working with Smith on improving his yards-after-catch ability, an area Smith made a priority this offseason. Eisen is not the first to hear Carter's bold prediction regarding Smith. According to Carter, he previously shared his expectations with Smith himself and his position coach Cortez Hankton. Smith is 341 receiving yards, 43 catches and nine touchdowns away from breaking three of Ohio State's all-time receiving records. This article originally appeared on The Columbus Dispatch: Cris Carter thinks Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith is 'gold jacket' bound
