Detroit The Red Wings ran an air-tight operation, with few to no new leaks sneaking through when Steve Yzerman was general manager. Since Yzerman was removed from that post last month, not much has changed.Information is at a premium, and possible candidates for the Wings' GM position who may have interviewed, who is being considered, etc. are, in large part, anybody's guess.There's one exception: Jeff Greenberg, the current general manager of the Tigers, the other team owned by the Ilitches.Greenberg, 40, a graduate of Columbia Law School, isn't your typical "hockey man" and, interestingly, that might just be exactly what Christopher Ilitch is looking for with this particular hire.Tigers president Scott Harris hired Greenberg in September 2023, after the two worked together with the Chicago Cubs from 2012-19. Greenberg interned with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Arizona Diamondbacks and MLB's executive office during his undergraduate studies and during law school. Greenberg joined the Cubs in 2012 as an intern in baseball operations and climbed his way to becoming assistant GM in 2020.Greenberg then joined the NHL Chicago Blackhawks in 2022, becoming an associate general manager and being credited for building one of the strongest analytic departments in the league. It's because of Greenberg's potent analytical skills that make him an intriguing candidate to join the Wings.Seeing the success of the Tigers since Harris has made them more analytics- and data-driven, along with much of Ilitch Sports & Entertainment becoming more data driven, Ilitch wants to see the hockey operation make the same leap.Elliotte Friedman, the prolific analyst for Sportsnet in Canada and NHL Network, floated the possibility Aug. 7 of Greenberg moving into the Wings' vacancy. Friedman took note of Greenberg being a bit of an outside-the-box hire."The Red Wings have indicated that they're open-minded about whether it's one person or two, what the person's background is, it might not necessarily be a 'hockey person', as we've come to define them," Friedman said. "It might be someone a little different."Ilitch's familiarity with Greenberg, said Friedman, could be a positive."It's wrong to say anybody is a lead contender, or anybody's got the inside track," Friedman said. "But I do think he's somebody who is already in the organization, who they have someinterest in, and if he's interested in the job, he will be a factor, although I want to make it clear he's not the favorite or anything like that."It's unclear what kind of front-office structure the Wings will have in their new alignment. Would it be a two-person arrangement, with each person responsible for certain and separate departments? Or would it be the more traditional GM role with different departments reporting to that one person?Greenberg has background in a variety of front offices, and different sports.Greenberg has extensive work experience in baseball, but he knows his way around a hockey rink. Greenberg played club hockey collegiately at University of Pennsylvania, was a passionate Pittsburgh Penguins growing up in Pennsylvania, and did impressive work in the Blackhawks' front office.Upon joining the Tigers, Greenberg talked about how much the Blackhawks' experience helped him."Going into hockey was an incredible opportunity to take on a new set of challenges and it made me a better leader," Greenberg said at his Tigers' introductory press conference."It made me think through problems the way I think can help us here."At that same press conference, Greenberg laid out a plan of how he'd like to see a sports front office hum along. Certain buzzwords get thrown out a lot, Greenberg said. I dont always know what they mean, if Im being honest. Atlanta Falcons edge rusher James Pearce Jr. will be suspended for the first eight games of the 2026 season for violating the league's personal conduct policy, the league announced Friday.Pearce was arrested in February following a domestic dispute with his ex-girlfriend and WNBA player, Rickea Jackson. The incident took place in Doral, Florida.Pearce will be available to participate in preseason games and all team activities until the suspension takes effect on Sunday, Aug. 30 which is also when 53-man rosters are finalized. The second-year defensive end can be reinstated on Monday, Nov. 2, following Atlanta's Week 8 road game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Falcons are set to play the Cincinnati Bengals in Madrid, Spain, the following week.The Falcons' pass rush has taken a hit recently following Jalon Walker's season-ending ACL tear. With Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders in a heated QB competition, there is sure to be plenty of discourse over the winner and loser.But behind those two polarizing QBs are a pair of very fascinating players for different reasons. Dillon Gabriel was a 2025 third-round pick, while Taylen Green is a project taken on Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft. One of these QBs might not make the team.Bleacher Report's Moe Moton proposed one solution, as he's urging the Browns to release Gabriel this summer, not trade him, in a move that would be totally horrendous.Browns urged to make horrendous Dillon Gabriel release decision"Dillon Gabriel is clearly the No. 3 quarterback," Moton writes. "... Teams may be willing to trade a late-round draft pick for him, but if not, he should be a prime cut candidate."This idea from Moton would be horrible for the Browns for many reasons. But it should be known that the idea of moving on from Gabriel isn't bad. It just would need to be a trade, not a release.Cutting Gabriel would be a terrible decision, as some team would surely scoop him up and get a young, cheap quarterback for the next three seasons for nothing.The Browns should absolutely hold out to find a trade for the lefty quarterback. Cutting such a player after just one season would be terrible business for the Browns.Even if it means holding onto four quarterbacks, the Browns absolutely cannot cut Gabriel. Gakpo remains an experienced Premier League attacker capable of playing from the left, centrally or across several attacking positions.Barcola Chase Could Shape Liverpool DecisionAnother important factor is Liverpools pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola.Andoni Iraolas squad is undergoing substantial attacking change, and Liverpools recruitment plans could create further movement before the transfer window closes.If Liverpool make progress with Barcola, Gakpos position becomes increasingly interesting.The club must manage the numbers within Iraolas attacking group, particularly when significant transfer income could be generated through Gakpos departure.There is also a financial consequence for PSV. The worry comes from the possibility of completing one half of that equation before the other has been secured.Liverpool have already entered another major period of transition under Andoni Iraola. Mohamed Salah has departed, and changing another established member of the attacking group carries obvious risk.Gakpo can frustrate supporters, and there have been periods where his performances have lacked consistency. He still provides goals, Premier League experience and positional flexibility. Those qualities matter during a long season.Liverpool therefore need certainty surrounding Barcola, or another elite attacking arrival, before allowing Gakpo to leave.There is also the uncomfortable prospect of strengthening Tottenham directly. De Zerbi clearly sees something valuable in Gakpo, otherwise those conversations would not have taken place so early.Liverpool cannot afford to discover several months from now that they have handed a direct Premier League rival a productive attacker while their own replacement remains unresolved.70 million would represent strong business.It only becomes good football business when Liverpool have the replacement through the door.
