SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'Nothings getting fixed': What Dusty May said about leaving Michigan for the NBA'Nothings getting fixed': What Dusty May said about leaving Michigan for the NBA originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. When the Michigan Wolverines basketball team lost Dusty May to the NBA, many were shocked due to the timing. A piece from The Athletic's CJ Moore has started to peel back the layers of the decision by the championship-winning coach and where he stands today. This all started with a phone call between Dallas Mavericks general manager Mike Schmitz and May. The conversation turned from the Wolverines' three NBA Draft prospects to a coach worthy of a promotion at the next level.Would you have any interest in this job? That's what May had to answer with Schmitz on the other end of the line. May said it was perfect timing. The "straw that broke the camel's back" was nothing specifically with Michigan. But that state of college athletics and inaction by the Big Ten Conference weighed on his mind.I was so excited for Big Ten meetings, like were going to find some solutions, May told The Athletic this week. I go there and I was just like, Oh my God, nothings getting fixed. Ever.Other Big Ten coaches were stuck playing within the rules from yesterday and not focused on tomorrow. Weve got to stop talking about the stuff that we cant change, May added. What's noteworthy about May's exit to the NBA is that the last coach to win a title and leave was Larry Brown in 1988. Nearly 40 years have passed since a coach made the jump right after. This wasn't planned in the slightest. However, the opportunity presented to him was the right one at the right time. Robert Deutsch-Imagn Images You have to really believe and trust in whos deciding the team for you, May said. After getting rid of Luka Doni with a terrible trade to the Lakers, being able to secure the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft to land Cooper Flagg was a silver lining. The Mavs needed a coach like May, who was ready for the next step in his career. While some would say the offer came abruptly and years before he established himself at a Power Four level, his resume speaks for itself.MORE:LSU basketball in panic mode with five players committed to Will Wade's rebootMay had success at Florida Atlantic before taking Michigan back to the promised land for the first time in decades. He has never posted a losing record as a coach during his eight seasons between both programs. This included four straight trips to the NCAA tournament before taking the job in Dallas. There was closure, like the next step of one chapter was ending, and the next chapter was beginning, May said. People were laughing at us the summer before about our roster construction. And then it became, well, it was a super team, and they just went out and hired a bunch of mercenaries to do what we did. The narrative just continued to change. So it was just a little bit of pettiness on my part.May is now chasing Brown in his professional career. The legendary coach who was always looking for his next job is also the only head coach in basketball history to win both a national championship and an NBA championship. If there was any sort of dj vu mixed into this journey for May, this would be the parallel.Brown left Kansas in 1988 to become the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs. The year before he landed in the NBA, the Spurs took Navy center David Robinson with the No. 1 overall pick in the 1987 NBA Draft. May has the same scenario with Flagg in Dallas. If history does truly repeat itself, May canexpect an NBA title in 2042. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNFL suspends Falcons' James Pearce Jr. 8 gamesAtlanta Falcons edge rusher James Pearce Jr. will be suspended for the first eight games of the 2026 season for violating the league's personal conduct policy, the league announced Friday.Pearce was arrested in February following a domestic dispute with his ex-girlfriend and WNBA player, Rickea Jackson. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBrowns urged to make horrendous roster decision with Dillon GabrielBrowns urged to make horrendous roster decision with Dillon Gabriel originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Cleveland Browns quarterback situation is one of the more fascinating ones to follow this preseason. With Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders in a heated QB competition, there is sure to be plenty of discourse over the winner and loser. But behind those two polarizing QBs are a pair of very fascinating players for different reasons. Dillon Gabriel was a 2025 third-round pick, while Taylen Green is a project taken on Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft. One of these QBs might not make the team.Bleacher Report's Moe Moton proposed one solution, as he's urging the Browns to release Gabriel this summer, not trade him, in a move that would be totally horrendous.Browns urged to make horrendous Dillon Gabriel release decision"Dillon Gabriel is clearly the No. 3 quarterback," Moton writes. "... Teams may be willing to trade a late-round draft pick for him, but if not, he should be a prime cut candidate."This idea from Moton would be horrible for the Browns for many reasons. But it should be known that the idea of moving on from Gabriel isn't bad. It just would need to be a trade, not a release.Cutting Gabriel would be a terrible decision, as some team would surely scoop him up and get a young, cheap quarterback for the next three seasons for nothing. The Browns should absolutely hold out to find a trade for the lefty quarterback. While he's not going to bring back a third-round pick, let alone a fourth-rounder, he could net a fifth if a team is desperate.MORE:Why Shedeur Sanders vs. Deshaun Watson QB competition is taking so long for BrownsGabriel threw for 937 passing yards last season with seven touchdowns and two picks. It was an 80.8 passer rating for Gabriel, which isn't great, but it's not horrible either. He's a game manager who, while maybe holding a lower ceiling than some other QBs, does have a decently high floor. Cutting such a player after just one season would be terrible business for the Browns.Even if it means holding onto four quarterbacks, the Browns absolutely cannot cut Gabriel. The same goes for Sanders, Watson, and even Green, who might have the highest upside of the bunch.Trading Gabriel would be an okay outcome, but a release would be such a horrendous decision that it'd be shocking if the Browns were to actually make this roster move.More NFL news:Ben Johnson responds to Liam Coens pointed Caleb Williams commentLamar Jackson is already predicted to be a Hall of Fame QB for Ravens per ESPNEagles' Jalen Hurts 'shouldn't have trouble' reaching Hall of Fame if he can continue to have playoff successCowboys QB Dak Prescott projected by ESPN to be behind Lions QB Jared Goff for HOF chancePackers edge Micah Parsons already predicted to be on cusp of Hall of Fame0 Comments 0 Shares 96 Views 0 Reviews -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJournalist: Liverpool star has already held talks to join Premier League rivalsJournalist: Liverpool star has already held talks to join Premier League rivalsCody Gakpo Transfer Latest as Tottenham Talks With Roberto De Zerbi RevealedLiverpool forward Cody Gakpo is increasingly open to joining Tottenham Hotspur, with fresh information suggesting direct talks have already taken place between the Netherlands international and Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi.Dutch journalist Rik Elfrink has provided the latest update on Gakpos situation, reporting that the 27-year-old held discussions with De Zerbi last month and came away receptive to the possibility of moving to north London.Liverpools willingness to consider a sale also appears to have increased, potentially opening the door to further negotiations between the Premier League clubs.Gakpo Held Direct Tottenham TalksTottenhams interest in Gakpo has developed significantly during recent weeks.Previous reporting from Voetbal International journalist Joost Blaauwhof indicated that Spurs had formally registered their interest in the Liverpool attacker, with De Zerbi viewing Gakpo and Savinho as players capable of fulfilling different functions within his attacking system.Elfrink has now offered further detail regarding Gakpos position. He posted on X: Gakpo has, according to a usually well-informed source, already spoken with the Spurs coach last month. After that, the conclusion was that he is definitely open to a transfer to Spurs. Liverpool now seems willing to go along with it. Theres still good money in it for PSV, so interesting enough. That communication with De Zerbi is significant. Gakpo appears to have received a clear indication of how Tottenham would intend to use him, while Spurs now know the player is receptive to their project.Liverpool Valuation Remains ImportantLiverpools stance will ultimately determine whether discussions progress towards an agreement.SoccerNews have reported that Tottenham submitted an opening proposal worth just over 60 million, although Liverpool are expected to reject that figure.Reports have placed Liverpools valuation at approximately 70 million, which represents a considerable return on the fee paid to PSV Eindhoven when Gakpo moved to Anfield in January 2023.The situation could therefore become a relatively straightforward negotiation if Tottenham are prepared to increase their offer.Liverpool have little reason to sanction a deal below their valuation. Gakpo remains an experienced Premier League attacker capable of playing from the left, centrally or across several attacking positions.Barcola Chase Could Shape Liverpool DecisionAnother important factor is Liverpools pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola.Andoni Iraolas squad is undergoing substantial attacking change, and Liverpools recruitment plans could create further movement before the transfer window closes. If Liverpool make progress with Barcola, Gakpos position becomes increasingly interesting. The club must manage the numbers within Iraolas attacking group, particularly when significant transfer income could be generated through Gakpos departure. There is also a financial consequence for PSV. Elfrink reports that the Dutch club would benefit from the solidarity mechanism should Tottenham complete the transfer, giving them an additional interest in proceedings.Tottenham Move Becoming Increasingly PossibleGakpos willingness to speak directly with De Zerbi represents another important development.Player interest alone does not guarantee a transfer, particularly when Liverpool retain control of negotiations and have established a significant valuation. However, the main components required for a deal are beginning to emerge. Tottenham want the player, Gakpo appears open to the move and Liverpool are reportedly prepared to discuss his departure at the right price.Further discussions over the fee may now prove decisive.Photo: IMAGOOur ViewSelling Cody Gakpo for around 70 million can certainly be justified financially, especially if Liverpool believe they can reinvest that money into Bradley Barcola. The worry comes from the possibility of completing one half of that equation before the other has been secured.Liverpool have already entered another major period of transition under Andoni Iraola. Mohamed Salah has departed, and changing another established member of the attacking group carries obvious risk.Gakpo can frustrate supporters, and there have been periods where his performances have lacked consistency. He still provides goals, Premier League experience and positional flexibility. Those qualities matter during a long season.Liverpool therefore need certainty surrounding Barcola, or another elite attacking arrival, before allowing Gakpo to leave. There is also the uncomfortable prospect of strengthening Tottenham directly. De Zerbi clearly sees something valuable in Gakpo, otherwise those conversations would not have taken place so early.Liverpool cannot afford to discover several months from now that they have handed a direct Premier League rival a productive attacker while their own replacement remains unresolved.70 million would represent strong business. It only becomes good football business when Liverpool have the replacement through the door.0 Comments 0 Shares 98 Views 0 Reviews -
