SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMLS vs. LIGA MX: Ranking the Leagues Cup 2026 quarterfinalistsMLS vs. LIGA MX: Ranking the Leagues Cup 2026 quarterfinalistsBy J. Sam JonesThe Leagues Cup 2026 knockout field is set and well, LIGA MX mostly sent the usual suspects and MLS decided to change things up!A few surprise stories are unfolding on the MLS side, some with a better chance of continuing than others. The caliber of LIGA MX opponents left won't make it easy. With eight teams left, heres whos got the best shot at a trophy. And remember: MLS teams have won all three prior versions of the tournament. LIGA MX teams are highly motivated to change that.1. Toluca FCToluca would have topped this list regardless of who they drew in the bracket. Theyve won just about everything over the last couple of years. In 2025, they won Clausura, Apertura and Campen de Campeones titles in LIGA MX. This summer, they capped off that run with a 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup title. Its just bad practice to bet against them until proven otherwise.Austin are the tournament's surprise team. Toluca are favored in that quarterfinal. Theyll be favored against whoever comes out of RSL-Len, too. Theyre just three matches away from completing their trophy set, and at least two of the games are very winnable.2. Club AmricaClub Amrica will have their hands full with a Columbus Crew team that seems to be figuring things out at an exponentially increasing speed. But theyre still going in as favorites against a team fighting for an Audi MLS Cup Playoffs spot. That matchup, and the fact they dont really play road games thanks to their massive fanbase, is enough to put Las guilas firmly among the trophy contenders.3. Chicago Fire FCChicago's quarterfinal matchup is just good writing. They transferred Hugo Cuypers to Monterrey a couple of weeks ago, shortly after signing Polish legend Robert Lewandowski. Now, when they face Monterrey, Chicago will go up against their former striker (and former MLS Golden Boot presented by Audi race leader) almost immediately after.Still, theyll be slight favorites at home. And, yeah, that Lewandowski guy is still pretty good. Chicago may have to take down a few LIGA MX giants along the way, but theyve got the best chance of any MLS side to do it.By pretty much any measure, theyre the best team MLS has left in the mix.4. Club de Ftbol Monterrey Rayados, A.C.Its been five years since Monterrey won their last Concacaf Champions Cup title. They arent the same continental powerhouse that won five CCCs from 2011 to 2021. Its hard to even call them a LIGA MX powerhouse right now, with just one league title (Apertura 2019) in the last decade. But, cmon, it still feels uncomfortable to think about counting Rayados out. They have Hugo Cuypers at striker! What team wouldnt want Hugo Cuypers at striker? They have Diego Rossi as an attacking midfielder! What team wouldnt want Diego Rossi as an attacking midfielder?Theyve spent plenty of cash on the rest of the roster, too. Theres enough talent there to win this whole thing.5. Columbus CrewThe Crew are looking a lot like The Crew again lately. They rolled through Phase One with wins over Atlas and Pachuca, then outlasted Pumas in penalties. In their two league games before the tournament, they took down FC Cincinnati and drew with Inter Miami. Theyre getting results, and theyre playing with aesthetics that (at least) remind you of the Wilfried Nancy-era Crew. Interim head coach Laurent Courtois has done solid work to get them back on track. It helps that the Crew front office might have flexed again. New DP midfielder Brais Mndez has immediately looked like a Best XI-caliber player since arriving from Real Sociedad. There were plenty of reasons to question their decision to move Diego Rossi to Monterrey, but Columbus may have just struck gold again anyway. What, like its hard?Still, theyve got maybe the toughest path. Its Club Amrica to start, then the winner of Chicago-Monterrey before the final.6. Real Salt LakeNo Gozo, no problem. At least so far.Even with Zavier Gozo reportedly on his way to Crystal Palace, RSL navigated past Phase One. Although we should note they didnt exactly encounter a gauntlet. Wins over Atlante and Jurez, plus a draw with Tigres, have them in the quarterfinals.Their path to the final isnt as favorable. Theyll face Club Len in a winnable quarterfinal matchup before theyll likely see Toluca in the semifinals.RSL are a solid, well-drilled team that could, in theory, pull off a trophy run. Its just hard to envision it while they learn to navigate life without Gozo.7. Club LenLen are by far the most surprising LIGA MX side to make it here. But my goodness, did they do it in style.Games against Inter Miami, Nashville and Orlando City would have derailed most teams. Instead, they took all nine points. Yeah, there was some lineup rotation for the MLS sides. Thats still an impressive run and should have Len supporters feeling optimistic after difficult Apertura and Clausura campaigns last year. That being said, theyll have to play at altitude against RSL, then might have Toluca waiting for them in the semifinals. They cruised through Phase One, but things arent going to get any easier. Thats enough to push them lower on this list.8. Austin FCIt doesnt make much sense to see Austin here during a down year. But, hey, Myrto Uzuni got hot in Phase One and delivered 4g/1a. With their Albanian forward leading the way, Austin took care of business against Xolos and Puebla and even managed a draw against Amrica. Thats all it took for them to make the quarterfinals.Toluca are waiting for them in the next round. Crazier things have happened, but theyve got a tall task ahead of them.0 Comments 0 Shares 96 Views 0 Reviews -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFormer OK preps star turning heads during Oklahoma's fall campThe Oklahoma Sooners enter the 2026 college football season without many question marks on the defensive side of the ball. The Sooners possess one of the best defensive units in the sport. However, the question marks the team has usually have to do with depth at certain positions. Cornerback is a position where the Sooners feel confident. Eli Bowen and Courtland Guillory are established starters and Jacobe Johnson has been a very good rotational player in his career. However, Oklahoma likes to be able to play four cornerbacks, and after losing Devon Jordan to the transfer portal, that leaves the fourth spot up for grabs. Former Sooner All-American linebacker Teddy Lehman said that he thinks former Oklahoma preps star Trystan Haynes could be the guy to take that spot and get into the rotation. "I really like Trystan Haynes," Lehman said on 'The Oklahoma Breakdown with Ikard and Lehman.' "I've seen some really good stuff from him."Haynes' emergence would give Oklahoma another young, talented option in the secondary and allow the Sooners to keep their top cornerbacks fresh throughout the season. It would also give the coaching staff more flexibility with its defensive personnel and coverage packages. The fact that Lehman is already impressed with what he's seeing from Haynes is worth monitoring as fall camp continues. He doesn't need to force his way into a starting role to make an impact. If he can prove he deserves consistent snaps, that alone would be a major development for Oklahoma. The Sooners' defense is already expected to be one of the team's biggest strengths in 2026. If Haynes can become a dependable fourth cornerback, Oklahoma could eliminate one of the few depth concerns standing in the way of that unit reaching its full potential. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMEric Karros wonders about divorce analytics for MLB hittersCredit: SNLAWith Major League Baseball tracking statistics for just about every scenario and situation, Eric Karros has one they may have missed. In his first season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Kyle Tucker is having the worst season of his Major League career. Tucker and his wife also had their first baby in March, shortly before the season began. And while Tucker was at the plate Thursday night, Dodgers play-by-play voice Joe Davis, who has three kids of his own, noted it would be interesting to see a breakdown of stats for players with young children.Dodgers broadcast contemplates if there are stats that can predict when a player will get divorced pic.twitter.com/5ra62QWwtz Jomboy Media (@JomboyMedia) August 14, 2026Itd be fun to see guys with kids under five, their home/road splits vs players that dont have kids under five, Davis said. The implication is that when players with young children are at home, their sleep will be interrupted much more than when theyre on the road, possibly affecting their on-field performance. As a dad of three kids ages four and under myself, I can attest to the rarity of uninterrupted sleep. But Dodgers analyst Eric Karros wanted to take the stat a step further, wondering what it might mean if a player with young children had great stats at home. Then you could track it even more, Karros said. Guys are having great years with young kids, and then four years down the road, theyre divorced.Davis was quick to interject with, That took a dark turn, as he attempted to keep the broadcast from going completely off the rails. Its just like, cause they werent doing anything! Karros explained. They were getting sleep, they werent spending any time with the kids.Baseball has already graced us with VORP, LIPS and PECOTA. WFAN notably tried to give FLUMP a whirl several years ago, but Karros may have just spawned BAWKAS, batting average with kids and spouse. Because if we wonder whether a players performance will dip while consistently being woken up in the middle of the night at home, then Karros can apparently wonder whether a player who sleeps through parent duty will be married for much longer. The post Eric Karros wonders about divorce analytics for MLB hitters appeared first on Awful Announcing.0 Comments 0 Shares 99 Views 0 Reviews -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMClay Holmes allows 1 hit in 2nd start for Cubs since MLB trade deadlineClay Holmes looked much more like the pitcher that the Chicago Cubs hoped they were getting at the MLB trade deadline after acquiring him from the New York Mets. Holmes began his second start for the Cubs with five perfect innings versus the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday. Perhaps even more impressive, he did so by only striking out two batters. Otherwise, Holmes recorded groundouts on seven of his first 15 outs. The Cardinals got their first hit with one out in the sixth on a Jos Fermn single. But Holmes kept St. Louis off the board by getting Csar Prieto on a forceout to second base, followed by a JJ Wetherholt groundout. Holmes eventually finished with 1 hit allowed in 6 2/3 innings. He was relieved by Ryan Rolison after walking Jordan Walker with two outs in the seventh inning. Matthew Liberatore matched Holmes with four perfect innings to begin his start. He gave up his first hit with one out in the fifth on a Nico Hoerner single. Liberatore lasted until the sixth when he allowed a leadoff walk to Tyrone Taylor and Dansby Swanson single. George Soriano took over for Liberatore and hung a changeup in the middle of the strike zone to Seiya Suzuki, who hit it into the left-field bleachers for a 3-run homer. With the home run, Liberatore finished with 2 runs and 2 hits allowed with 1 walk and 6 strikeouts in 95 pitches. In his first start for the Cubs, Holmes allowed 4 runs and 6 hits over 4 innings with only one strikeout in a 6-3 loss to the Kansas City Royals. While the right-hander hardly looked impressive, it should be pointed out that Holmes was also making his first appearance since May 15 when he fractured his right fibula. Prior to getting injured, Holmes was having a strong season, compiling a 2.39 ERA in 9 starts with 45 strikeouts in 52 2/3 innings. This story will be updated with more information.0 Comments 0 Shares 54 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDeion Sanders believes Boo Carter could become a top-five pickDeion Sanders has been high on Boo Carter since the Tennessee transfer arrived in Boulder and perhaps even before that, when he tried to recruit him to CU out of high school. On Friday, he raised the ceiling again.Speaking at Colorado's Fall Sports Media Day, Sanders said Carter could play his way into the first round of the NFL draft as soon as next year. If the defensive back stays with Colorado for two seasons, Sanders believes the upside could be even higher."I feel he's a first-rounder when he puts it all on tape," Sanders said. "He could be a bona fide top-five pick if he stays here two years."Carter arrived from Tennessee as one of Colorado's most versatile additions. The 5-foot-11 defensive back is expected to work primarily at cornerback, but Sanders has discussed using him at safety, in the slot and in the return game. That flexibility is a major part of the appeal. At Tennessee, Carter earned All-SEC freshman recognition in 2024 and led the conference with a 16.5-yard punt-return average. He followed with a 13.2-yard average in 2025, including a career-long 40-yard return. Colorado needs more from that area after finishing last season with 11 punt returns for 79 yards and no touchdowns.Sanders also mentioned that Carter is "attitude-wise, mentality, A+." The staff has not had any problems with him whatsoever, and he's not "problematic whatsoever."The projection for Carter is ambitious, but it matches the role Colorado has in mind for him. If he holds up on defense and becomes a dependable returner and finishes without any major injuries, he could have plenty of NFL eyes on him, which Sanders said is already happening."When scouts come out, [Boo Carter] is one that they ask about," Sanders said.Follow James CarnesonFacebook,Instagram, and X.Contact/Follow us@BuffaloesWireon X (formerly Twitter) and like our page onFacebookfor ongoing coverage ofColoradonews, notes and opinions. This article originally appeared on Buffaloes Wire: Deion Sanders believes Boo Carter could become a top-five pick0 Comments 0 Shares 141 Views 0 Reviews -
