EAST RUTHERFORD - Well, at least one thing became clear in the Jets 24-16 preseason-opening loss to the Buccaneers: The much-publicized battle for the backup quarterback job isnt much of a battle at all. Cade Klubnik, the jobs yours. The rookie made the start for Geno Smith, who sat Friday night with a sore ankle. He played two series, led the Jetsto 10 points, and completed five of seven passes for 56 yards. Braelon Allen capped the second with a 31-yard touchdown run. The Buccaneers rested their defensive starters. He has some moxy to him, said coach Aaron Glenn. Really a thumbs-up (performance) for him.Selected in the fourth round from Clemson, Klubnik looked calm behind a Jets front that allowed just two pressures on his seven attempts. He was decisive with the ball, then aggressive when the opportunity presented itself. On the first possession, Klubnik fired one over the middle to Garrett Wilson, who made a spectacular contested catch for a 21-yard gain. Its been an up-and-down summer for Klubnik. Hes flashed. In joint practices with the Buccaneers on Wednesday, he found Arian Smith for a perfectly placed, 55-yard touchdown. The issue is that turnovers have been as big a part of his game as strikes. Klubnik has been prone to forcing passes into areas he likely shouldnt, leading to head-scratching interceptions. Friday night featured none of that. Klubnik looked in control, maybe a result of his 40 collegiate starts. Bailey Zappe, who had been competing with Klubnik for the backup job, spelled him against Tampa Bay. He struggled mightily against the reserves, finishing six of 10 for 55 yards with a pair of interceptions. Here are a few more takeaways from Jets-Bucs -It was a promising start for Klubnik, but the struggles of Zappe paint a questionable picture of what the Jets have behind Geno Smith. A sore ankle isnt anything concerning, but it does raise alarms about how a 35-year-old quarterback can break down at a moments notice. It would be a very significant undertaking to ask Klubnik to play meaningful reps early in the season. Adding a quarterback might be a smart move. -That grab from Wilson was a thing of beauty. He had another catch-and-run for 11 yards on the same drive. Hes a very, very good football player and the Jets offense operates at an entirely different level with him out there. The key, and this has been the case: Get Wilson a quarterback who can get him the ball. They hope theyve done that with Smith. -Isaiah Williams got the start at slot receiver over Omar Cooper, which isnt a surprise if youve seen training camp. Its been a slow decline in reps for the rookie this summer. Part of that is because Cooper is swimming a bit, but Williams has also been a camp star. He deserves the playing time. Cooper did make a few plays on Friday night, including a 26-yard grab to convert a first down. -Cooper is a unique receiver. What he does well isnt really something that shows up in practice. Hes not super electric or fast. He doesnt run the best routes. Hes a player you want to get the ball to, then step away as he makes magic happen. The YAC shows up in games and did a bit on Friday. The key for Cooper now, and to steal a few reps back from Williams, is doing this consistently. He flashes, but doesnt do it enough. -The Jets really do have quite the 1-2 punch with Breece Hall and Allen. Allen flashed that physicality and speed on his touchdown, when he got through an arm tackle and then ran away from the defense for the score. The Jets recently paid Hall deservedly so. Frank Reich cant forget about Allen, though. -Undrafted cornerback Mory Bamba played well. He had four pass breakups and a nice special teams tackle. Its a long shot for him to make the team in the Jets' crowded corner room, but hes a candidate for the practice squad. -Arian Smiths days might be numbered. He had issues with drops at Georgia. Thats been a theme in training camp this year. Its getting to the point the Jets just cant trust him. Thats an issue for a roster-bubble wideout. -Will McDonald had a sack on a power move when he bull-rushed a tackle. Thats a good thing to see. McDonald hasnt done much this summer. The Jets desperately need a rusher to step up opposite rookie phenom David Bailey. -Speaking of Bailey it was a quiet night for the Jets No. 2 pick. Ninety-four years after Colonel Cottari Kanakaiya Nayudu (CK Nayadu) led a motley crew of a resurgent nation in their first Test match at Lord's Cricket Ground on June 25 1932, India will play their 600th game in the cricket's oldest and toughest format at Galle International Stadium in Sri Lanka on Saturday.The men-in-Blue, led by Shubman Gill, are set to become only the third team after England and Australia to reach the milestone, that too on the day when the nation is celebrating its 80th Independence Day from the colonial rule.A total of 319 lucky players have donned the India cap in Tests so far, Manav Suthar being the latest among them, and Sachin Tendulkar holds the record of most Test caps - 200.From Colonel C K Nayadu to Rishabh Pant, Indian men's cricket team have been led by 38 captains in these ninety-four years, under whom they have been through the lowest of lows to the highest of highs but constantly aspiring to be better.Virat Kohli holds the record for captaining India in the most Test matches, having led the team in 68 Tests from 2014 to 2022. Under his leadership, India secured 40 wins, making him also India's most successful Test captain.As India are set to create history at Galle, heres a look at Indias 1st, 100th, 200th, 300th, 400th nd 500th match:India's first Test: England vs India, Lord's, June 25 - 28, 1932The Maharajah of Porbandar was named captain of the touring Indian side but good sense prevailed and CK Nayadu was nominated to lead the side in India's first-ever Test, however not before some off-field drama.England captain Douglas Jardine rescued his side after Mohammad Nissar rocked England as he clean bowled Percy Holmes and Herbert Sutcliffe, on 6 and 3, respectively.Jardine's 79 and Les Ames' 65 took England to 259 in the first innings. Nasser (93/5) took India's first five-wicket haul in Tests.India were bowled out for 189 in their first innings as Bill Bowes (49/4) and Bill Voice (23/3) ran through Indian batting, giving England a lead of 70 runs, which they capitalized on, and declared their second innings at 275/8.India had 346 runs to chase and England easily won the match by 158 runs despite Amar Singh's (51) gutsy knock.India's 100th Test: India vs England, Birmingham, July 13 - 15, 1967Led by one of India's greatest Test captain, Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, India toured England England for a three-match Test series.Having lost the first two Tests, India entered the third match looking to avoid a series whitewash.England won the toss and scored 298 in the first innings. India's four spinners Srinivas Venkataraghavan, Bhagwath Chandrasekhar, Bishan Bedi and Erapalli Prasanna took all 10 English wickets.India's batting line-up featured Farokh Engineer, Ajit Wadekar, Chandu Borde and Pataudi, but the visitors struggled against the England attack. India were bowled out for just 92, with only four batters reaching double figures. Engineer was the top scorer with 23.Chandrasekhar, Bedi and Prasanna then took nine of England's 10 second-innings wickets. However, England had already built a lead of more than 400 and set India a target of 410.Wadekar scored 70, but India were dismissed for 277. England won by 132 runs and completed a 3-0 series sweep.India's 200th Test: India vs Pakistan, Lahore, December 10 - 15, 1982Their was no Covid-19 in 1982, but there were no spectators in Lahore's historic Gaddafi Stadium to see the Test match as the Pakistan Cricket Board - then Board of Control for Cricket in Pakistan (BCCP), had sold the entire series to a private party for around 800,000. The contractor set high entry prices, keeping many spectators away. The rates were cut by half after the second day, but the crowds did not return.The match, first of the six-Test series, had some terrific performances from batsmen of both sides. Zaheer Abbas played a monstrous knock of 215 runs, which was also his 100th first class ton, as Pakistan finished their first innings at 485, after being asked to bat by Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar.Returning to the side after nearly two years, Mohinder Amarnath led India's reply with an unbeaten knock of 109 runs. Sunil Gavaskar also scored 81, and passed the 7,000 Test run mark, while Sandeep Patil played a quickfire knock of 68 off 56 balls. India scored 379 in their first innings.Pakistan scored 135/1 in their second innings, and the match ended in a draw.India's 300th Test: India vs South Africa, Ahmedabad, November 20 - 23, 1996It was the first Test of the three-match series against South Africa, and VVS Laxman also made his Test debut in this match. India captain Sachin Tendulkar put India into advantagious position by batting first on a brown, dusty pitch.Tendulkar's 42, Manjrekar's 34, Azharuddin's 35 helped India reach 223 in their first innings even as Allan Donald took 37 for 4.India however hit back with spin and the then trio of Anil Kumble, Sunil Joshi and Narendra Hirwani scalped 8 South African wickets, and South Africa could take just 21-run lead.India struggled again with the bat and were reduced to 123/6 in their second innings. Laxman scored 51 and helped India reach 190.South Africa needed 170 to win but lost two wickets without adding a run to the scoreboard. Javagal Srinath then took six wickets as South Africa were bowled out for 105.India's 400th Test: West Indies vs India, Sabina Park, Jamaica, June 30 - July 02, 2006All previous three of the Tests in the series had ended in a draw and both teams reached Sabina Park for the last Test.Brian Charles Lara's side were bundled out for a mere 103 with Harbhajan Singh (13/5) being the wrecker-in-chief.Rahul Dravid, India's captain, won the toss and chose to bat. India struggled with the bat again, but Dravid scored 81 as they made 200.India had a 97-run lead but could not build a big advantage with the bat. Dravid again led the way, scoring 68 as India were dismissed for 171. West Indies were set 269 to win. Anil Kumble took six wickets as India bowled them out for 219.India won by 49 runs in their 400th Test.India's 500th Test: India vs New Zealand, Green Park, KanpurIndia reached Kanpur's iconic Green Park stadium to play the 500th Test, led by Virat Kohli. It was the first Test of three-match series.The Test match was being played at the time when India were at peak of their home domination with Ashiwn and Jadeja at their best. Murali Vijay (65), and Cheteshwar Pujara's (62) half-centuries took India to 318 in the first innings on a decent pitch.While Tom Latham (58), New Zealand captain Kane Williamson (75), and Luke Ronchi (38) played promising knocks as Black Caps batted for almost 96 overs, Jadeja (73/5), and Ashwin (93/4) made sure India had a lead of 56 runs.Four Indian batters - Vijay, Pujara, Rohit Sharma, and Jadeja - scored fifties in the second innings as India declared at 377/5 on day 4, setting an improbable target of 434 runs for New Zealand.Of course Ravichandran Ashwin finished the job in the fourth innings, taking a six-wicket haul, and India scripted a famous win by 197 runs at Green Park.India went on to win the series 3-0.

There was a particularly distinguished passenger on a distinctly unglamorous airline. Rodri was on the Ryanair flight to Liverpool and part of the surprise for some was that, via Merseyside, he was returning to Manchester at all. The subject of bids from Barcelona, Rodris future may lie in his native Spain rather than at Manchester City. It is so far unknown if he incurred Ryanairs infamous fines for bringing the World Cups Golden Ball in hand luggage or whether he stowed it under a seat. Enzo Maresca saw the man who lifted the most prestigious trophy of all briefly and gave him a big hug, he said. They would talk later. Citys new manager coached Rodri when his goal clinched the Champions League and thus the treble in 2023. Whether he will ever manage him remains to be seen; minor back surgery would always have ruled Rodri out of Sundays Community Shield against Arsenal. Man City are open to letting Rodri return to Spain but only if it helps fund his replacement (PA)But with Barcelona expected to return with a third offer, Maresca may have to contemplate forging an entirely new midfield. His inheritance from Pep Guardiolawas an enviable one in many respects, but if he is the continuity candidate there will be change at the centre of the pitch. Rodri has a year left on his deal but seems to have decided to go. Bernardo Silva left when his contract expired; Guardiolas own departure made it a still more natural end point for one of his closest allies. Tijjani Reijnders is heading for the exit, too, off to Al Qadsiah for 51m, and if the Dutchman lost his place as Guardiola preferred an axis of Rodri and Silva, it was nevertheless the case that only six players made more appearances for City last season.Guardiola famously said that, if he could pick 11 midfielders, he would. There were times when he had a surfeit of options: in 2019-20, for instance, he had not merely Rodri and Bernardo Silva but also David Silva, Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin De Bruyne and Fernandinho.Now Maresca only has one who seems guaranteed a central role this season, in Elliot Anderson. The 23-year-old is a very expensive midfielder at 116m, the costliest ever and arrives fresh from excelling in a World Cup, but he is only one man nevertheless. City have deluxe targets but this is a time of transition, of instability and uncertainty. We are in a moment when players that were here for many years probably already left and probably they can leave and that means there is a change, reflected Maresca.Anderson is designed to be the future. He comes with his own attributes but Silvas influence was such that perhaps he is irreplaceable in some respects: the small man who was the big-game player, the specialist in small spaces, to borrow one of Guardiolas phrases, a tactically intelligent technician.It is big challenge first of all because Bernardo shows how good he is, on the ball and off the ball in these years but Elliot arrives, said Maresca. We are completely sure Elliot is doing a great job for this club in the next one, two, three, four, five years; no doubt about that. They are different players but we are going to try and use Elliot in the best way for him and for the team.Quite how that is will depend in part on whether Rodri stays. Officially the best player in the World Cup, a recent Ballon dOr winner, he can be called the games outstanding defensive midfielder now.Neither of Citys two premier targets is a Rodri duplicate; perhaps it is impossible to find one. Enzo Fernandez tended to play for Marescas Chelsea alongside more of a destructive midfielder, in Moises Caicedo, and spent some of last season operating as a No 10. Ayyoub Bouaddi does not have Rodris experience, authority or power, unsurprisingly given the Moroccan is still a teenager. Being paired with either could give Anderson more defensive duties.Enzo Maresca could yet be reunited with Enzo Fernandez (PA Wire)Then there is the question that, should Rodri go, of if City make one or two midfield signings. Can be one or two, said Maresca, and if he was talking more generally, that may just mean in the midfield. Mateo Kovacic has said he is staying; Nico Gonzalez has voiced similar sentiments, though that may change if there were two more arrivals.Get both Fernandez and Bouaddi and Citys bill for the midfield refit could be around 300m, albeit offset by the sales of Reijnders and, therefore, Rodri. Maresca indicated that City would not be forced into action by Chelseas artificial deadline of 5pm on 14 August to bid for Fernandez.There are a lot of moving parts. Some of the decisions are not Marescas, as his explanation about Reijnders indicated. Its a bit difficult to convince players when they are already convinced, he said. You need to change their thoughts. That is not always easy.The sense is that Rodris mind was already made up, too. It leaves Maresca to create his midfield; with Anderson, perhaps augmented by Rodri or Bouaddi or Fernandez or Kovacic. In the moment the window transfer closes we need to be good enough to find as soon as possible solutions for our players for the team, he said. And his reign starts in earnest, it is still unclear who those solutions will be.
