Our last couple of preseason games typically give us a strong idea as to the team that will start the season, and frustratingly its in an area in which we have decent depth the centre of defence that we find ourselves scratching our heads a little. Nordi is likely to miss this one, Alderetes still carrying an injury inflicted by the dirty Aussies in the World Cup, while Dan Ballard went down at the end of last weeks game in France. Hopefully that ones not a major concern, but we know Ballards prone to picking up injuries, so we could well be looking at starting the season with Luke ONien and Jenson Seelt at the back and, with the best will in the world, thats not Plan A. Still, well wait and see what transpires. Heres how we could line up this afternoon. Goalkeeper: Robin Roefs Its been nice to see Roefs back in action over the past couple of weeks, and Im looking forward to seeing him develop even further this season, with a year of Premier League football under his belt. Defence: Thomas Meunier, Jenson Seelt, Luke ONien, Reinildo Thomas Meunier impressed on his first appearance in, erm, pink last weekend, and will get another outing today. Its looking likely hell start the season at right back, which again probably wasnt the plan, although its not a bad fall back at all. I did wonder whether we might try him out alongside ONien in the centre today I just dont see us risking Ballard so thats something to watch out for. As it goes, I think Seelt will get a run out in the centre alongside Luke, with Reinildo playing left side. Midfield: Trai Hume, Enzo Le Fee, Granit Xhaka, Noah Sadiki, Chemsdine Talbi Its highly likely Hume will begin the season on the right of midfield, and Im all for it. I might be in a minority, but he plays such an important role in the team tactically, hes one of those that if you take him out of that role it really exposes what he does bring. Enzo will play centrally this season and rightly so, hes a genius and needs to be on the ball as much as possible, while it was nice to see Xhaka back in the side last week. What speculation?! Sadiki will likely play in the centre its going to be interesting how we get Diarra into the equation too while I think Talbi will start on the left and really kick on this season. Striker: Brian Brobbey The link up play between our Dutch striker and the midfield is getting better and better, and its exciting to look ahead to a fully fit and confident Brobbey taking on the Premier League this season. Hes a completely different proposition to the one who arrived less than 12 months ago, and I do think this factor is getting overlooked in some of the transfer panic going on in some quarters on social media. Weve got an excellent squad, most of whom had never played in English football, never mind the Premier League, before they arrived last year. They have now. Theyre young, have significantly more experience than they arrived with, know each other, the manager and the club theres huge value in that. So yes, while we need a bit of depth, maybe a challenger for a left back spot and a right winger, dont underestimate what we have in the building already. Because its bloody good.

Bayside High football didnt light up the scoreboard on Aug. 14 in its season opener versus Crescent City, but the Bears made enough plays in the end to come out victorious.Despite numerous drives that stalled out inside Raiders territory, Bayside scored the decisive touchdown in the third quarter for a 6-0 win.Tough, but satisfying. We talked about being consistent. We kept pounding, kept finding a way. Thats a tough, physical bunch and we knew that coming in. Too many penalties (tonight), Bayside head coach Billy Miller said. Kind of shot ourselves in the foot a couple times on offense. Defense well be real pleased. We only had 31 defensive snaps. As ugly as a victory is, well take them every time because theyre hard to come by.Bayside senior quarterback Joey Costa broke the scoreless deadlock in the third quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run on 3rd and goal. The score capped a 16-play drive that took nearly the first 10 minutes off the clock to start the second half.It felt amazing. They kept hitting me late. They kept hitting me in the back and I was like if they want to hit me in the back, I want them to hit me head up," Costa said. "I want to see how much they really want to play football. I feel like Im one of the most physical quarterbacks in Florida and I want to show that.The score with a sigh of relief for Bayside after four trips inside the Raiders 30-yard line in the first half resulted in no points. It was 0-for-3 on fourth down with halftime ending a drive in the red zone. Despite that, the Bears stay composed.Every one of these guys want to finish. I feel like we were able to keep our composure well, especially on these longer drives, Costa said. I think weve gone through one of the hardest summers coming in at 7 (a.m.), getting out 10, 11 (a.m.). We come in at 6 a.m. every morning. We run every day. I feel like we were made for a special run this season.The Bears showed their offensive potential with Costa under center. The Washington Commanders opened the preseason with a dominant 20-7 win over the Miami Dolphins on Friday night at Northwest Stadium. The win capped a successful week for Washington, which shared the field with the Dolphins on Wednesday in a joint practice.With most of the Commanders starters participating in the joint practice, head coach Dan Quinn gave most of them the night off for Fridays preseason opener. No Jayden Daniels. No Terry McLaurin, Stefon Diggs, Chig Okonkwo, Bill Croskey-Merritt, Odafe Oweh, KLavon Chaisson, Mike Sainristil and several others.Marcus Mariota got the start under center for Washington, but departed after only a few plays with an apparent leg injury. Sam Hartman and rookie Athan Kaliakmanis went the distance for the Commanders. Fridays win came down to Washingtons rookie running backs and a dominant defensive effort. Here are six standouts from the Commanders preseason-opening win. QB Athan KaliakmanisIf you just look at the numbers, not much separates Kaliakmanis and Hartman. However, Washingtons offense looked different with the rookie. His first two passes were completions. One was an impressive strike to Colson Yankoff. Compared to Hartman, the ball just jumped off Kaliakmanis hands. We arent sure if the Commanders will keep two or three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. If they keep three, Kaliakmanis has already won the job. Hartman struggled early but settled down and looked much better than he did a year ago. But Kaliakmanis had the better overall night.RB Robert Henry Jr. Weve been quietly hearing about Henry since the spring. While the focus was on Croskey-Merritt, Rachaad White, fellow rookie Kaytron Allen and Jeremy McNichols, Henry has been showing off in practice. The undrafted rookie from UTSA can fly. Hes also got some impressive wiggle. On his touchdown run, Henry showed a little bit of everything: vision, patience, and explosiveness. Henry also had an impressive pickup in pass protection. If he can string together two more performances like this, hell be hard to keep off the 53. RB Kaytron AllenHenry had more flashy runs, while Allen had the big, sturdy runs youd expect from him. He carried the ball 23 times for 85 yards and a touchdown. There was already talk that hed be Washingtons short-yardage back in 2026, and he did nothing to dispel that notion. Allen is a different type of back from everyone else on the roster. Thats a positive. Offensive coordinator David Blough can use him in goal-line situations or late in games when theyre trying to protect a lead. WR Jaden BradleyTwo players weve heard a lot about since OTAs and the beginning of camp are tight end Colson Yankoff and undrafted rookie wide receiver Jaden Bradley. Yankoff is making the roster again. He put together another good night. So did Bradley. Bradley flashed off a little bit of everything, almost blocked at least two punts, caught two passes and had a couple of impressive blocks. Each of those things gets you noticed. In any other year, hes making the 53. The receiver position is deep this time around. Bradley will make it hard on the Commanders, but you can bet hell be a priority to retain on the practice squad. There is potential for him to continue growing as a receiver, too. DT Ricky Barber Jr. An undrafted free agent in 2025, Barber was on Washingtons practice squad until he was called up late in the season. He had an excellent debut against the Cowboys. He was extremely impressive against the Dolphins, registering five tackles, including one for loss and one sack. He also played a pivotal role in this fourth-down stop that essentially ended Miamis night early in the game. Big play by Commanders defense to get a stop on 4th down. But he was better than Johnny Newton, a 2024 second-round pick. He needs to keep stringing together these types of performances. He was impactful against the run and the passa great night for Barber. CB Antonio Hamilton Sr. Its often the case that 33-year-old players are playing the second half of a preseason game. Not everyone is cornerback Antonio Hamilton Sr. A journeyman, Hamilton has played for seven different teams as he enters his 11th season. He joined Washington last year due to injuries and made an impression. He plays hard on every snap. On defense or on special teams. Hamilton made multiple plays on Friday and finds himself around the ball. If Washington keeps five corners, Hamilton has a great shot at beating our Fabian Moreau for that final spot. Ahkello Witherspoons surprising retirement changed things for Hamilton. Hamilton is a fun player to watch. His love of the game comes through on every snap in which he plays. For the first quarter and a half against Grantsville Friday, it looked like San Juan was going to remind everyone why it was one of the most dangerous offensive teams in Utah.Then Grantsvilles defense took over.The Cowboys erased a 12-0 deficit by scoring 30 unanswered points, forcing seven San Juan turnovers along the way, and held on for a 30-20 victory at Snow College.It was a game that seemed to change every few minutes. San Juan came out firing as quarterback Beau Yeomans opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run, and later in the first quarter he found Brigg Palmer wide open for a 47-yard touchdown.Just like that, San Juan had a 12-0 lead.And then the Broncos stopped scoring, although it took a while for the Cowboys offense to get going as they threw two interceptions deep in San Juan territory.But Grantsvilles defense kept giving the offense another chance.We left a lot of points on the board, Grantsville coach David Millward said. We had interceptions in the end zone. I think we had four red-zone possessions without points.Eventually, though, the Cowboys broke through when Carter Bell scored on a 9-yard run early in the second quarter, cutting San Juans lead to 12-7.Then late in the first half, Mack Hammond intercepted Yeomans and gave Grantsville the ball at its own 42.
