It was the team's first practice following Thursday's preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts. Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota has taken his last snap of the preseason. Mariota started Friday night's game, but left during the team's first offensive possession and did not return. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that he has been diagnosed with a sprained MCL and that he will not play again before the regular season. It's not clear at this point if he will be healthy enough to serve as Jayden Daniels's backup for Washington's Week 1 game against the Eagles. Sam Hartman and seventh-round pick Athan Kaliakmanis are the team's other quarterbacks. The Commanders could add another healthy body to get them through final weeks of the preseason.

Some PGA Tour and DP World Tour wins obviously meant a lot, but he was clearly aware that they were unlikely to impact his legacy.What he did not realise in the moment he secured sporting immortality on Augustas 18th green following a playoff with Justin Rose was just how difficult it would be to find the motivation once one of his biggest dreams had been realised.That is perhaps something he should keep in mind now that LIV Golf appears to be in serious danger of disappearing altogether.Rory McIlroy will be remembered for leading the charge against LIV GolfIt is difficult to imagine how different the golfing landscape would have become had Rory McIlroy ever decided to make the jump to LIV Golf.McIlroy made it clear that he was remaining loyal to the PGA Tour. In fact, his focus on the PGA Tours fight to stave off LIVs threat seemed to impact his own form at times. He understandably felt let down by the PGA Tours framework agreement with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia in June 2023.And he has had no problem sharing a Ryder Cup locker room with the likes of Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton.But the LIV connection made his loss to Bryson DeChambeau at the 2024 US Open all the more heartbreaking.Similarly, it surely gave him even more fuel when it was DeChambeau who joined him in the final group on Sunday of The Masters back in 2025.And McIlroy needed little encouragement to criticise DeChambeau at The Open Championship earlier this year when the American received a penalty after his second round.That rivalry will remain if DeChambeau does not return to the PGA Tour. But there is no question that being the poster boys for the two tours battling for supremacy made the rift between McIlroy and DeChambeau so much more intense.LIVs days as a genuine threat to the PGA Tour ended some time ago now. But there seems to be a genuine possibility that the league will not even be around in 2027.That chip could finally be removed from his shoulder once and for all.All of that energy McIlroy invested into seeing the back of LIV may soon have to be directed elsewhere.His 2025 Masters win suggests that may not be too easy for him.

Designated hitter Masataka Yoshida is going on the injured list with a strained left hamstring and reliever Justin Slaten will also be sidelined with right elbow soreness, the team announced on Sunday.Yoshida, 33, sustained his injury during Saturdays 4-0 win over the PIttsburgh Pirates. While rounding first base on a third-inning double, he stumbled on his way to second and quickly grabbed the back of his left leg. Mead could return sometime in September after suffering a fractured left wrist on July 27.Slaten, 28, had been one of Bostons most effective relievers. From July 7 to Aug. 2, he had made 10 straight appearances without allowing a run and gave up only 3 hits in 8 2/3 innings. However, the right-hander then allowed 1 earned run in two consecutive outings, along with 4 hits in 1 2/3 innings. Slaten again pitched a scoreless inning in his last appearance on Aug. 12 versus the Toronto Blue Jays with 1 walk and 1 strikeout. But he hasnt pitched since then. Earlier in the season, Slaten missed 28 games from April to May with a right oblique strain. Slatens move comes three days after Garrett Whitlock was placed on the IL with right elbow inflammation, sidelining two of the Red Soxs best relievers as the team battles the New York Yankees for the American Leagues top wild-card playoff spot and attempts to stay ahead of at least six teams in those standings. Overall, Slaten has 39 strikeouts in 31 1/3 innings with a 4.60 ERA in 36 appearances. Whitlock registered a 2.05 ERA in 45 games with 49 strikeouts in 45 innings. To fill the two roster openings, the Red Sox recalled catcher/DH Mickey Gasper and lefty reliever Raymond Burgos from Worcester. Gasper had a .337/.450/.566 slash line in the minors with 18 doubles, 9 homers and 42 RBI. Burgos had a 5.54 ERA with 54 strikeouts in 65 innings.

The Lions announced a handful of roster moves on Sunday morning. They have signed running back Trayveon Williams and cornerback Ekow Boye-Doe. They waived running back Kye Robichaux and defensive back Loren Strickland with injury designations in corresponding moves. Williams entered the league as a 2019 sixth-round pick of the Bengals and he spent six seasons in Cincinnati. He played three games for the Chargers and four games for the Browns last season. He has 72 carries for 343 yards in 75 career games. Boye-Dow signed with the Chiefs after going undrafted in 2023 and played six games during his rookie season.
