'I felt helpless': Rohit Sharma's honest admission on India vs Pakistan thriller
NEW DELHI: Former India captain Rohit Sharma looked back at some of the defining moments that have shaped the storied IndiaPakistan rivalry in T20 World Cups, naming the 2007 final as his most cherished encounter against the Asian neighbours.Until the recent ICC Men's T20 World Cup fixtures, Rohit the ambassador for this edition had featured in every IndiaPakistan clash at the T20 World Cup. From making his debut as a youngster in 2007 to leading India to memorable wins over Pakistan in 2022 and 2024, his journey in this high-voltage rivalry has been significant. My favourite T20 World Cup match against Pakistan was definitely the final we played, nothing can beat that. We went on to win the World Cup. Rohit was quoted as saying by the ICC.India and Pakistan faced off twice in the inaugural 2007 edition. Before the summit clash, a group-stage match ended in a tie and was decided by the tournaments first-ever bowl-out.In that same year (2007), we also played a league game against Pakistan, which was the only match in the tournament decided by a bowl-out, and we came out on top there as well. So in 2007, both World Cup games were special, Rohit recalled.Another unforgettable chapter unfolded at the MCG during the 2022 T20 World Cup. After being dismissed early, Rohit watched from the sidelines as India scripted a dramatic comeback victory.Yeah, I was in the dressing room. Then I came out, but I got nervous and went back inside. When games are this tight, especially when youre off the field and know you cant do anything, it just takes that sense of control away from you, and I felt helpless. You actually do feel helpless watching the game unfold when you cant do anything about it, said Rohit.Chasing 160, India found themselves in deep trouble at 31/4 before an extraordinary innings from Virat Kohli turned the contest on its head.Kohli played a blinder there. That was again very, very special to watch because we were in no position to win that game, especially after how we started. But the way we finished was magnificent. It has to be one of the greatest cricket games weve ever played because of the occasion. It was a World Cup game, an important one for us to win, and to come back from that situation made it even more special, the 2024 T20 World Cup-winning skipper said.Rohit, who retired from T20 Internationals after playing 160 matches, admitted that nerves never left him throughout his career and that the feeling kept him motivated.Ive played 160 T20 Internationals for India. I dont remember a single game where I wasnt nervous. I was nervous for each and every game. That feeling gives me nervousness, and I dont think that as long as Im holding this bat, going out there and taking the field, that feeling will ever go away. It stays with me. And that feeling means you still want to go out there, play the game, and give your best, Rohit concluded.

Its not that Calgary bid on the 2026 Winter Games and lost out to an Italian proposal. The health, safety and wellbeing of our players, staff and tournament personnel is our priority. It's an OPS world in today's major leagues with batting average in the background
Batting average was a priority for Andrew Benintendi when he first broke into the major leagues in 2016. He batted .312 in the minors on the way to his debut.Going into his fourth season with the Chicago White Sox and 11th overall, he is more focused on his OPS and power numbers. The game kind of changes where the money is, I guess, Benintendi said. So players obviously will chase that. The significance of batting average has been in decline for years, replaced by on-base percentage and slugging percentage, along with the OPS metric that combines the two. Batting average treats all hits as the same, while OPS accounts for power and other methods of reaching base. But the diminished importance of what was once one of the majors' marquee statistics was thrown into sharp relief by the free agency of Luis Arraez over the winter. Arraez, a three-time batting champion who turns 29 in April, hit a career-low .292 with eight homers and 61 RBIs in 154 games for San Diego last season. The infielder also led the NL in hits for the second straight year. But he doesn't hit for power or walk very much, and he has defensive limitations. So, even with his .317 career batting average tops among active qualified players Arraez was on the market until right before spring training, when he agreed to a $12 million, one-year deal with San Francisco. Arraez said he had some multiyear offers, but the Giants gave him an opportunity to play second base.I don't care who (is throwing). I don't care if he's a Cy Young (Award winner), he said. I have a bat, and I want to go up there and compete. The MLB-wide batting average has remained fairly steady since the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. It was .248 in 2023 marking a successful debut for a package of rule changes that included a pitch clock, bigger bases and limits on infield shifts .243 in 2024 and .245 last year, according to Sportradar. While New York Yankees star Aaron Judge won the 2025 AL batting title with a .331 average, just seven qualified big leaguers hit .300 or better, matching the previous year for the fewest since a record-low six in 1968. Philadelphias Trea Turner won the NL batting title with a record-low .304 average. We look at more of the advanced metrics and the expected outcomes based on the quality of the at-bat, the process metrics, but you can start with batting average and say this guys doing something well, said Chris Young, the president of baseball operations for the Texas Rangers. Its a preliminary indicator, but we dig pretty deep in terms of understanding the profile of a player and what we can expect and predict.Batting average is not something that we look at at the beginning of an evaluation, said Jed Hoyer, the president of baseball operations for the Chicago Cubs.I think theres a lot of things that are much more important, Hoyer said, but I do think that a guy like a Nico Hoerner or Luis Arraez, I do think in a world that values a strikeout, in a world that has so much incredible stuff, I think that the players that can truly put the ball in play at an elite level, I do think theres something to that.Hoerner hit .297 for the Cubs last year, helping the team reach the playoffs for the first time since 2020. He batted a team-high .371 with runners in scoring position. The 28-year-old Hoerner, who is going into the last year of his contract, said he thinks players still take some pride in their batting average.I think it's telling that if you ask the player what he hit last year, he still understands that thats batting average, right? Hoerner said. "They dont say like, oh, I hit .840 OPS. I hit .270 or whatever it is.Players are aware of whats valued and what gets them on the field and yeah, I dont think batting average is particularly high on that list. But I do think it is a reflection of quality of contact that guys make.It has changed the way players like Benintendi approach their game. From 2016-23, he hit .276 and averaged 14.1 homers per 162 games. In two years since, he is batting .234 and averaging 25.8 homers per 162 games.I think its more slug, OPS is what outweighs batting average now, Benintendi said, because say you hit .250 but you have 50 homers, would you rather have that or a guy who hits .315 with 10 homers? So I mean its kind of give and take depending on the player. The future of batting average also belongs to the game's youngest players, and it still holds some allure to them as well.Cincinnati infielder Sal Stewart, one of the preseason favorites for NL Rookie of the Year, hit .309 over two minor league stops last year before making his Reds debut in September. Stewart said batting average didn't come up very often during his development process, but it means something to him.I mean Im not like, Oh average is the king, you know, but I look into it, he said. But I really like on-base the most.___AP Baseball Writer David Brandt contributed to this report.___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB

Tottenham ban three fans for life after 'making Nazi salutes' against German side
Tottenham Hotspur have imposed indefinite bans on three supporters following their performance of Nazi salutes during the club's Champions League encounter with Eintracht Frankfurt earlier this year. The north London outfit secured a 2-0 victory at Deutsche Bank Park on 28 January, with goals from Randal Kolo Muani and Dominic Solanke ensuring a fourth-place finish in the league phase. However, the triumph was overshadowed by the offensive gestures directed towards home supporters. The club moved swiftly to condemn the actions, branding them "utterly abhorrent" and confirming that those responsible had been identified and sanctioned under Spurs' internal banning policy.European football's governing body has responded with significant penalties for the incident.UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body levied a 30,000 fine against the Premier League club for what it termed "racist and/or discriminatory behaviour" by supporters.Additionally, Spurs face a ban on selling tickets to travelling fans for one European fixture, though this sanction remains suspended for a probationary period of twelve months from today's date.Should the club be found guilty of a similar offence during this period, the ticket restriction would take immediate effect.A separate 2,250 penalty was also imposed for objects hurled by spectators during the Frankfurt fixture. In their official statement, Tottenham emphasised their complete cooperation with the investigation conducted by UEFA, whilst also working alongside German authorities on the evening of the match and subsequently with the Metropolitan Police. The club declared: "The club stands firmly against all forms of discrimination and has therefore taken the strongest possible action."Spurs were unequivocal in their assessment of the incident, describing the conduct as "disgusting behaviour of a minority of so-called fans."The statement continued that such actions were "in no way reflective of the values of our club and its supporters," distancing the institution firmly from those responsible. The club's forthright stance ensures that travelling supporters will still be permitted to attend their forthcoming European engagement, with the suspended sanction posing no immediate barrier.Spurs are set to face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last-16 first leg on 10 March, with the tie representing a crucial opportunity for a club currently enduring domestic difficulties.Igor Tudor's side have suffered a torrid run of form in the Premier League, with Sunday's defeat at Fulham extending their winless streak to ten matches. The quarter-final draw could see the winners face either Newcastle or Barcelona. Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
