Commanders seeking a specific type of running back in 2026
It's no secret that the Washington Commanders will look for another running back this offseason. Only Jacory Croskey-Merritt is under contract for 2026. Croskey-Merritt, aka Bill, was a seventh-round steal in the 2025 NFL Draft, rushing for 805 yards, a team-high eight touchdowns and averaging 4.6 yards per attempt. However, he's the only running back under contract for 2026. Austin Ekeler and Jeremy McNichols are unrestricted free agents, while Chris Rodriguez Jr. is a restricted free agent. Ekeler is not expected back, but the team would like to retain McNichols and Rodriguez. They want and need more, though. Matthew Berry of Fantasy Life revealed the type of running back the Commanders desire when he was Indianapolis at the 2026 NFL combine last week. Im told the Washington Commanders want a thumper and by that I mean a true early-down star running back. They felt like onceAustin Ekelerwent down last year, the run game struggled. They thinkChris Rodriguezis a nice back but dont like him in the passing game, and they clearly found something inJacory Croskey-Merrittaka BILL but think of him more as a 2 or a 3 than a true lead back. My guess is the running back who leads Washington in touches next year isnt currently on their roster.Kenneth Walker III and Breece Hall are the top free-agent running backs. The Jets are expected to place the franchise tag on Hall, meaning Walker is alone at the top. However, there are several good backs in free agency this year, including Travis Etienne, Rico Dowdle, Tyler Allgeier, Rachaad White, Kenneth Gainwell and J.K. Dobbins. All could help Washington. But if you look at that list, one name stands out: Allgeier. The 25-year-old back has been Bijan Robinson's backup for the past two seasons. He's more than earned a starting role. Allgeier has missed one game in four seasons, went over 1,000 yards rushing as a rookie and has 2,876 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns. The Commanders plan to run more outside zone under offensive coordinator David Blough, which is perfect for Allgeier. He's the perfect runner for that scheme, and he can also bring the power element that Washington reportedly seeks. Allgeier won't break the bank, either. Spotrac lists his value at $5.7 million per season and projects a three-year, $17 million contract. He will earn more than that, but far less than Walker. When free agency begins next week, Allgeier should be at the top of the Commanders' wish list. Leeds manager breaks silence after fans were heard booing during Ramadan break in Man City defeat
Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has offered a defence of supporters who booed during a Ramadan fast break in their match against Manchester City, suggesting confusion over what was happening on the pitch. The German believes fans mistakenly thought Pep Guardiola was using the pause to deliver tactical instructions to his players rather than allowing Muslim players to break their fast."I'm not sure that everyone was aware, we had the topic of Pep bringing players in to give a team talk, I think supporters thought it was this," Farke said.He added: "I don't think booing was for this. If it was from some people about this, then that's not acceptable."TRENDINGStoriesVideosYour SayThe criticism came after City secured a narrow 1-0 victory at Elland Road, with Antoine Semenyo netting the decisive goal during first-half stoppage time.Guardiola's side kept up their pursuit of title rivals Arsenal with the win, whilst Farke's team remain in a relatively comfortable position despite the setback.Leeds sit six points clear of the relegation zone following what was only their third loss in fifteen Premier League fixtures. The anti-discrimination organisation Kick it Out described the booing incident as "massively disappointing," while Guardiola himself condemned the behaviour during his post-match press conference.Farke acknowledged that if the jeering was indeed directed at the religious observance, lessons must be learned. The Leeds manager's frustrations boiled over at the final whistle when he marched onto the pitch to challenge referee Peter Bankes over the lack of additional time.LATEST SPORTS NEWS:Cristiano Ronaldo 'leaves Middle East in middle of the night on private jet' amid escalating conflictRio Ferdinand issues family update as 'scared and frightened' Man Utd hero remains locked down in DubaiBoris Becker makes feelings clear on cheating scandal while first wife was giving birth in hospitalIt marked the first red card of Farke's sixteen-year managerial career, though he insists the dismissal was unjustified."I jogged over. Not one bad word. No swear words or bad language," Farke explained."I just wanted to ask him why he didn't add any time on. He didn't speak to me and just pulled out the red card."The 48-year-old maintains the card was brandished before he had uttered a single word to the official, leaving him feeling publicly humiliated.Farke expressed his belief that the decision should be overturned, drawing parallels with how player dismissals are handled when errors occur."When there has been a clear and obvious mistake, and for me this was a clear and obvious mistake, it should be overturned," he stated. The manager revealed that even the assistant referees appeared taken aback by the severity of Bankes's response."To pull out a red card and embarrass me in front of the whole world, I wasn't happy," he stated."Even the assistants were shocked the red card was shown. This is not how we should work with each other."Farke is hopeful of taking his place in the dugout for Tuesday evening's fixture against Sunderland while awaiting the official report. It is understood he may accept a potential one-match suspension rather than pursue a formal appeal. Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
