Rahm accuses DP World Tour of 'extorting players'
Jon Rahm has claimed the DP World Tour is "extorting players" as he outlined why he is not among a group of LIV Golf competitors to have signed a settlement enabling them to play in both organisations' tournaments.Eight players were last month granted releases by the DP World Tour - formerly known as the European Tour - to participate in LIV Golf events this year, allowing them to retain memberships and remain eligible for Ryder Cup selection. The waiver included an agreement to pay outstanding fines reportedly in the region of 2.5m levied for playing in LIV events without DP World Tour permission, the withdrawal of all pending appeals and an acceptance to take part in stipulated DP World Tour tournaments.Spaniard Rahm, a former world number one and two-time major winner, said he was "not going to agree" to those conditions - although he suggested a compromise could be found if the number of DP tournaments needing to be played is reduced."I don't know what game they're trying to play right now," he said."But it just seems like in a way they're using us to (capitalize on) our impact in tournaments and fining us and trying to benefit both ways from what we have to offer."And it's just in a way they're extorting players like myself and young players that have nothing to do with the politics of the game."He added: "Now, I did tell them, funny enough, lower that to four events, like the minimum says, and I'll sign tonight."They haven't agreed to that. I just refuse to play six events. I don't want to, and that's not what the rules say."The DP World Tour declined to comment when approached by the BBC.Jon Rahm says the DP World Tours conditions are too restrictive [Getty Images]"I just don't like the situation," said Rahm."I think we should be able to freely play where we want and have the choice to play where we want and not be dictated what we do. Especially myself. I can't speak for others, only myself."I've always committed to play the minimum requirement [on the DP World Tour], and I think I've played four events, including the Spanish Open, every year except one as a pro, and I commit to do that."That's not going to change. I still fully intend to do that."His stance could put his participation in next year's Ryder Cup in Ireland in doubt having been part of the last four European squads.Rahm's Ryder Cup future in doubt amid tour row

Former Premier League star reveals 'miserable' cocaine addiction with marriage now over
Daryl Janmaat, the former Newcastle United and Watford full-back, has opened up about his struggle with cocaine addiction in a new interview. The 36-year-old, who earned 34 caps for the Netherlands, disclosed that his dependency on the drug played a significant role in the collapse of his marriage."I cannot and do not want to mention all the details, but my cocaine addiction has caused a lot of misery," Janmaat told AD.During his time in English football, the defender featured 77 times for Newcastle across two seasons from 2014 to 2016, subsequently spending four years at Watford.TRENDINGStoriesVideosYour SayHis international career peaked when he helped the Dutch reach the 2014 World Cup semi-finals, where they lost to Argentina on penalties.Janmaat's playing days came to an abrupt halt in 2022 at ADO Den Haag, the Dutch club where he had first emerged as a professional. The circumstances surrounding his retirement proved devastating. An injection in his knee went wrong when an incorrect needle caused the joint to become infected, effectively ending his career."I wanted to do so much, but a knee injury threw a spanner in the works," he explained. "My career was over, I couldn't handle that."Following his retirement, Janmaat took on a technical director role at ADO Den Haag, but the transition proved deeply challenging.LATEST SPORTS NEWS:Leeds manager breaks silence after fans were heard booing during Ramadan break in Man City defeatEnglish football stadium set on fire in suspected arson attack as emergency services rush to the sceneBoris Becker makes feelings clear on cheating scandal while first wife was giving birth in hospital"I was supposed to get help from everyone and everything, but I was left to fend for myself," he said."Suddenly, I lost the structure I'd had for years as a footballer."The addiction developed insidiously, fundamentally altering his behaviour towards those closest to him."That was difficult, the cocaine addiction gradually crept in. You start lying to the people you love. That's terrible, I hurt a lot of people," Janmaat reflected. The father of three acknowledged that his substance abuse contributed to the breakdown of his relationship with his wife Yoshi, though he noted their marriage had already been experiencing difficulties."I am still officially married, but we are no longer together," he said. "The relationship wasn't going well anyway, but that addiction obviously didn't help."Despite the damage caused, Janmaat indicated that relations with his estranged wife have improved."A lot has been damaged, although we are getting on well again. It was cocaine, not something else. Not drink either. It can happen to anyone, I think. I never thought I could become addicted."In 2023, Janmaat was reportedly discovered under the influence of drugs in Scheveningen, a coastal district of The Hague, following which he entered a rehabilitation facility in South Africa. The former Premier League defender has spoken out ahead of his appearance in a documentary entitled 'Real Men Don't Cry', which examines how elite sport affects mental health. Former Aston Villa centre-back Ron Vlaar is among the other ex-professionals featured in the film.Janmaat, who also played for Heerenveen and Feyenoord during his career in the Netherlands, has conceded that a return to football is unlikely at present. The 36-year-old has instead embarked on a new chapter, having established his own gym business. Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
