Canucks helping Blackhawks trade $4 million winger before deadline
Canucks helping Blackhawks trade $4 million winger before deadline originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. Before the NHL trade deadline, the Vancouver Canucks and Chicago Blackhawks both have a handful of players who could be dealt away. And as it turns out, in one potential trade, both the Canucks and Blackhawks might play a part. That's because of salary retention in trades. The Canucks are currently paying 15% of Ilya Mikheyev's salary this season already. If the Blackhawks decide to move Mikheyev elsewhere, they can retain even more of his money, making him cheaper for an acquiring team. And this time of year, especially with an altered playoff salary cap looming, the money is more important than ever for teams across the NHL.Mikheyev is listed on the trade board of The Athletic's Chris Johnston, and given that he's heading for free agency after the season, it'd be logical for Chicago to move him now and get at least a little value in return."A big winger capable of playing up and down the lineup, Mikheyev brings a fair amount of versatility with his game," Johnston wrote in his new article on Monday. "Hes been deployed as a penalty-killer throughout his NHL career and is a threat to score short-handed. Not only is Mikheyev a pending UFA, 15 percent of his contract was retained by the Vancouver Canucks in a previous trade, so the cap hit on his deal is eligible to be reduced further."MORE:Maple Leafs getting help from Flyers to trade veteran centerAt this point, it'd be surprising to see Mikheyev stay put. There's still likely a flurry of activity to come by Friday. And if the Blackhawks do indeed send him away, they'll have the Canucks to give a little thanks to for managing to facilitate the deal way ahead of time.More NHL news:Oilers want 2 positions before the NHL trade deadlineA salary cap rule may make 2 Flames trades difficultCanadiens know trade cost for Robert ThomasIt'll be complicated to trade for Steven StamkosAlex Ovechkin has shared an update on his retirement plansEvgeni Malkin gets big news on a possible future

Football chiefs bring back rule that was changed 23 years ago because of England manager
Football's governing body, FIFA, has brought back a substitution regulation that proved deeply unpopular with supporters more than two decades ago.Under the reinstated rule, international managers may now replace up to eight players during friendly matches.Should both coaches reach an agreement, this figure can extend to a maximum of 11 changes per fixture. The previous version of this regulation was scrapped following significant criticism directed at the England camp over twenty years ago.TRENDINGStoriesVideosYour SayFIFA's decision to restore these provisions forms part of a broader package of amendments introduced prior to this year's World Cup tournament. The catalyst for the original prohibition was a decision by then-England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson during a friendly encounter with Australia at Upton Park in 2003.The Swedish coach made the bold choice to replace his entire starting XI at the interval, fielding a completely different squad for the second half. This wholesale transformation of the Three Lions lineup sparked considerable controversy among fans and pundits alike. The resulting furore prompted football authorities to outlaw such mass substitutions, a ban that remained in effect for more than two decades until the recent reversal by FIFA.The International Football Association Board revealed these regulatory changes last week as part of a wider overhaul designed to improve the sport.LATEST SPORTS NEWS:Leeds manager breaks silence after fans were heard booing during Ramadan break in Man City defeatEnglish football stadium set on fire in suspected arson attack as emergency services rush to the sceneBoris Becker makes feelings clear on cheating scandal while first wife was giving birth in hospitalAmong the new measures is an expansion of VAR technology to review corner kick decisions, instances where cards are mistakenly shown to the wrong player, and situations involving second yellow cards.Officials have also introduced provisions aimed at accelerating match tempo by tackling deliberate time-wasting tactics.Referees will now possess the authority to initiate a five-second countdown when players appear to be delaying throw-ins or goal kicks.Furthermore, any substitution taking longer than 10 seconds will result in the incoming player being forced to wait an additional minute before entering the pitch.Eriksson, who passed away at the age of 76 following a diagnosis of terminal pancreatic cancer, left an enduring mark on English football. The Swedish tactician served as Three Lions boss for a five-year period, during which he guided the national side to the last eight at two World Cup tournaments. He achieved similar success at European Championship level, steering England to the quarter-final stage. His tenure remains one of the most significant in the modern era of English football management, despite the controversy surrounding his substitution decisions during that memorable friendly against Australia. Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
