Should the 49ers reunite with this recently-released former star?
The San Francisco 49ers have the opportunity to reunite with one of their former star defensive players. The Denver Broncos reportedly released linebacker Dre Greenlaw on Thursday, per ESPN's Adam Schefter, one year after he left the 49ers in free agency.Greenlaw played his first six seasons for San Francisco after being drafted in the fifth round in 2019. He had started 56 of 64 games over that span, where he tallied 455 combined tackles, 18 tackles for a loss, 3.5 sacks, three interceptions and 14 defended passes. As evidenced by his release, Greenlaw didn't have a great lone season in Denver after he signed a three-year, $35 million contract with the Broncos. He missed the first six weeks of the season with a hamstring injury and only played in seven games in 2025. Greenlaw finished the year with 43 combined tackles, one sack, one interception, two defended passes and one forced fumble. The 49ers don't have a clear need at the position Greenlaw would play at the WILL linebacker position, but a familiar face would certainly be helpful for the 49ers' defense in 2025. Dee Winters stepped up admirably in Greenlaw's role this past year with 101 combined tackles, eight tackles for a loss and one interception (that was returned for a touchdown). If Greenlaw wants to come back to the 49ers in a smaller role, a reunion makes sense. The money also needs to make sense for San Francisco, too, for this to happen. It's unclear if the 49ers or Greenlaw even want to reconvene, but the option is now out there with Greenlaw on the open market. This article originally appeared on Niners Wire: NFL free agency: Should the 49ers reunite with this former star?

Trump discourages Iranian soccer team from attending the World Cup, citing safety concerns
President Donald Trump said he did not think it would be appropriate for the Iranian soccer team to attend this years World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, and cited safety concerns as a reason on Thursday, while the countries are embroiled in a war.The Iran National Soccer Team is welcome to The World Cup, Trump wrote on his social media site, but I really dont believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety.Iranian leaders said earlier this week that its not possible for the country to participate in the World Cup.Trump's message appears to depart somewhat from what the Republican president relayed Tuesday at the White House to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who later publicly said that Trump assured him the Iranian players and coaches would be welcome.A White House official, who insisted on anonymity to discuss private conversations, had confirmed Trumps message to Infantino about Irans participation. On Thursday, the White House did not immediately clarify what Trump meant by their own life and safety, such as whether he anticipated threats against them while in the United States after U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran that began Feb. 28.Iran, one of 48 teams in the tournament, is scheduled to play in Inglewood, California, against New Zealand on June 15 and Belgium on June 21 before finishing group play in Seattle against Egypt on June 26. The U.S. is hosting the tournament with Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.Since June, Iran has been subject to a travel ban into the U.S. as part of the Trump administrations immigration crackdown. But athletes and coaches from the target nations are exempt, which means the Iranian team would be allowed to enter the U.S.___Dunbar reported from Geneva.

Tony Jacklin: Why I think Tiger Woods will want to be US Ryder Cup captain
Tony Jacklin believes Tiger Woods is destined to become the next US Ryder Cup captain and says the golf icon will ultimately see it as his duty to lead Team USA.The Ryder Cup legend says the biggest question ahead of the 2027 contest is whether Woods is prepared to take on the challenge of trying to wrestle the trophy back from Europe. He said: I think the big story is, does Tiger really want to expose himself and do it (captain USA)? Tiger must know that, going into the matches in Ireland, Europes going to be the overwhelming favourite. So does he want to put himself up to get his backside kicked?TRENDINGStoriesVideosYour SayI think its his duty to do it. If he could do it and pull it off, he'd be King of the hill forever.Jacklin has also backed Luke Donald as the right man to lead Team Europe again in 2027, describing him as the obvious choice. LATEST DEVELOPMENTSLuke Donald makes admission as Europe star keeps captaincy for 2027 Ryder CupJon Rahm accuses DP World Tour of 'extorting players' in scathing attack amid row with Rory McIlroyShane Lowry makes sad admission about his daughter after PGA Tour collapseJacklin has backed Luke Donald as the right man to captain Team Europe in 2027.He said: Luke was really the obvious choice. Hes done such an excellent job over the past two years. A number of us thought Justin Rose might be ready to take on the mantle, but hes obviously playing some of the best golf of his life.As soon as he declined the opportunity, Luke was really the obvious choice. It was just a question as to whether he wanted to take it on again. Thankfully, he said yes. I think that was the right answer, and I think were going to be in a very strong position again.Jacklin was equally emphatic when assessing Donalds impact as captain so far: Hes done such an excellent job over the last two years as captain. "He embraced it the way he needed to. He became everybodys best friend. He was totally thorough, and we won on both occasions.Hes the sweetheart of a guy, and hes got a lovely way about him of dealing with the media. Hes a great, perfect guy for the job. I wish him well again, and I hope he has a trifecta.Jacklin also gave an insight into what the public rarely sees from a successful Ryder Cup captain: You cant play for these players, but you can become their friend. "You become simpatico with the pressure that they get put under and use all of your influence to help them as much as you can.He also pointed to Europes enduring unity as one of the key ingredients behind the teams modern Ryder Cup success. Jacklin, now one of Londons leading Motivational speakers , said: Team unity is a huge thing, and I believe, with an absolute passion, that we never have a problem with team unity in Europe.Once a European gets on that Ryder Cup team, he has an opportunity to show that just because their background doesnt necessarily equate to what the American counterparts background has been, that doesnt make America any better. The Ryder Cup has become a wonderful way for Europe to show that theyre up for anything. Theyre just as good, if not better, than the Americans. It puts America on the defensive all the time. Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
