SPORTS.YAHOO.COMGet to know the newest Saints punter, free agent addition Ryan WrightVeteran punter and former Tulane Green Wave star Ryan Wright was signed by the New Orleans Saints early in free agency. While a punter typically doesn't generate many headlines, it was a major area of need for the Saints. New Orleans has cycled through four different punters in the five years since Thomas Morstead departed as a free agent after the 2020 season. That includes three different players over the last three seasons, with worsening results.Blake Gillikin, Lou Hedley, Matthew Hayball, and Kai Kroeger were all rookies who failed to fill the sizeable shoes of Morstead. This time, the Saints elected to go the route of a proven veteran to improve a punting position that was downright woeful last year. Here's a closer look at what they're getting in Wright as he comes home.Ryan WrightPosition: PunterAge: 25Height: 6-feet, 3 inchesWeight: 245 poundsNFL experience: 4 seasonsGrowing up in San Ramon, Calif., Wright was both the punter and starting quarterback for California High School. He'd play collegiately for the Tulane Green Wave, where he held the punting job for all four years. Wright averaged 44.5 yards per punt for Tulane, including a 47.5 as a senior to earn him 2021 1st Team All-AAC honors. He'd go undrafted in the 2022 NFL draft, but was signed by the Minnesota Vikings. As a rookie, Wright beat out incumbent Jordan Berry to win the Vikings punting job. He'd hold off all challenges to keep that job for the next four years. Wright won Special Teams Player of the Week once as a rookie, averaging a gross of 47.4 yards and a net of 42.5 with 32 of his 72 punts landing inside the opposing 20-yard line. His inside the 20 percentage dipped to just 28.8% in 2023, but he still had a gross average of 48.7 and net of 42.1.Wright's accuracy improved sharply in 2024, as 27 of his 56 punts (48.2%) were downed inside the 20. His gross average was 46.5, with a net of 40.5 yards. Both those numbers rose significantly last season. Wright had a career-best gross average of 49 yards and net of 44.5, as 25 of his punts (38.5%) were downed inside the opposing 20. Additionally, Wright had an NFL-long of 77 yards during the season. By contrast, Kroeger carried a gross average of 44.8, NFL-worst net of 37.3, and only 18 of his punts (32.1%) were downed inside the opposing 20-yard line.Ryan Wright was signed to flip field position for the Saints and pin opponents deep in their own territory. Both areas had been glaringly lacking for the Saints in recent years. While New Orleans is expected to have an improved offense in 2026, Wright's addition is expected to help out a defense that got little assistance from their punters since Morstead left New Orleans. This article originally appeared on Saints Wire: Get to know the newest Saints punter, free agent addition Ryan Wright0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 91 Views 0 previzualizare

WWW.GBNEWS.COMJack Draper knocked out at Indian Wells as fans erupt in boos after controversial callJack Draper's Indian Wells title defence came to a contentious conclusion in the quarter-finals after umpire Aurelie Tourte penalised him for hindrance against Daniil Medvedev. The pivotal incident occurred with the second set locked at 5-5 and Draper trailing 0-15 on his own serve. The British number one briefly extended his arms outward during a rally, believing Medvedev's forehand had landed beyond the baseline.Despite the rally continuing for seven more shots before Medvedev missed a backhand, the Russian requested a video review. TRENDINGStoriesVideosYour SayTourte studied the footage on her tablet before ruling against Draper, explaining that he had done "something different in the rally than you would normally do".Stadium Court 2 erupted in boos as the decision was announced, with spectators jeering Medvedev at the changeover and again following his eventual 6-1, 7-5 triumph. The 24-year-old appeared visibly drained following his gruelling third-set tiebreak victory over Novak Djokovic less than 24 hours earlier.Medvedev seized control from the outset, breaking Draper's opening service game when a net cord fell fortuitously in his favour at break point. The former world number one raced into a 4-0 advantage within just 15 minutes, firing winners both down the line and across court with clinical precision.Draper managed to hold serve and avoid a bagel, making it 5-1, but Medvedev wrapped up the opener in a mere 25 minutes. The second set proved more competitive, though Draper's serve remained under constant pressure. It took the Briton 49 minutes to fashion his first break point opportunity, which Medvedev saved with three consecutive aces.LATEST SPORT NEWSHow Sir Andy Murray has helped turn Dunblane massacre into beacon of hope - 30 years onNovak Djokovic makes surprise admission after crashing out of Indian Wells to Jack DraperJack Draper defeats Novak Djokovic for the first time ever in title defence amid injury comebackDraper was gracious in defeat, telling BBC Sport that Medvedev "was the stronger player fair and square" and insisting he harboured no ill feeling towards his opponent.Draper said: "I don't think I did enough to hinder him, but at the end of the day I did make a slight thing with my hands. I think he's played the rules quite well. The rally carried on and I was able to win the point so I don't think I should have lost the point. I think it's pretty harsh."The pair shared a lengthy but amicable exchange at the net, with Medvedev offering: "If you're mad at me, I'm sorry."Medvedev acknowledged the incident left him uncomfortable: "Do I feel good about it? Not really, but I also don't feel like I cheated. I let the referee decide."British involvement in the singles draw concluded when Cameron Norrie fell 6-3, 6-4 to world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-final.Norrie battled admirably against the Spaniard but was ultimately outclassed by the two-time Indian Wells champion.Medvedev will now face Alcaraz in the semi-finals.Draper conceded that his body had simply given out after the emotional and physical toll of defeating Djokovic. He said: "Today I ran out of steam and I wasn't able to compete again a day later with one of the best players in the world, and that's just totally normal."The defeat will see Draper tumble from 14th to 26th in the world rankings on Monday, surrendering the British number one position to Norrie. Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 68 Views 0 previzualizare
