Big Picture: Why Seahawks GM John Schneider Expects Sam Darnold to 'Play Even Better' in 2026
PHOENIX Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider's eyes lit up when I asked about his teams prized quarterback, Sam Darnold. In my conversation with Schneider, he emphasized the belief that the USC product has more to show entering his second season in Seattle. Thats right. Even after leading a different team to a 14-win season that included a run to hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in his first year with the Seahawks, Schneider said Darnold having a second offseason under head coach Mike Macdonald and getting more comfortable in the offense will lead to even more efficient performances on game days. "Yeah, I know its crazy to say that because he won 14 games last year," Schneider told me, while posted up at a cozy table at the Arizona Biltmore hotel. "But weve always said Sam is just a football player. When you take the quarterbacking out of it all the quarterback schools and stuff that you go to hes just a football player." What do you mean by football player, John? "It means the quarterback isnt separated from the rest of the team," Schneider said. "Hes one of the guys. And that means hes a great leader." Schneider expects Darnold to create even better chemistry with playmakers like Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Rashid Shaheed and Cooper Kupp by taking more on-field reps. And thats something we should get an up-close view of, with the Seahawks set to appear on HBOs "Hard Knocks" for the first time this year. Yes, offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak left to become the head coach for the Las Vegas Raiders. But the Seahawks replaced Kubiak with San Francisco 49ers run game coordinator and tight ends coach Brian Fleury, who coached with Kubiak and established a rapport with Darnold during their time together in San Francisco. So, the bottom line is the offense remains the same for Darnold. "Hes going to be that much more comfortable from being around his team," Schneider told me. "Just his relationship with Coop and Rashid. Like, Rashid came in during the season, so that takes a minute to build chemistry. He gets another year with Jax (Smith-Njigba), and we have a really cool tight end group [Elijah] Arroyo and [A.J.] Barner did a great job. "He can play even better." Schneider will lean on his experience in reaching back-to-back Super Bowls during Pete Carrolls tenure in replenishing his teams roster to defend last seasons convincing Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots. However, Schneider did not want to provide how that plan will be executed. "Yeah, tons of lessons learned," a coy Schneider told me. "But I dont want to get into specifics because I dont want to tell people what were doing. But yeah, we learned a lot through that process." Since Schneider is being a bit elusive, heres what he told me about that time four years ago. Schneider said he felt that the Seahawks got away from the teams core principles of acquiring fast, young, hungry athletes and letting them compete. "[It was] us not really doing a great job of bringing some guys in that were competitive enough to say, Im going to take Earl Thomas job. Or, Im going to go take Sherms [Richard Sherman's] job." Schneider told me in 2022. "We got into a couple classes there where we learned those guys were Russell Wilson on Madden, or they were playing Kam Chancellor on Madden. And now they're in a room with him and it's like, Oh s---, thats Kam Chancellor. Instead of saying, Im going to go try and take his job. "So, learning from our mistakes and understanding its more about the makeup and character of the person or the man, the grit and the self-confidence that they have.Just really trying to focus on that." The Seahawks will certainly need some players with the mentality Schneider's looking for entering 2026. They created some scuttlebutt in league circles by letting some pretty good players sign with other teams in free agency. That list includes Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III signing a three-year, $45 million deal with the Kansas City Chiefs; safety Coby Bryant inking a three-year, $40 million deal with the Chicago Bears; edge rusher Boye Mafe agreeing to a three-year, $60 million deal with the Cincinnati Bengals and Riq Woolen signing a one-year, $12 million contract to join the Philadelphia Eagles. Instead of making a big splash in free agency to replace those lost assets, Schneider focused on re-signing his own players (Shaheed, cornerback Josh Jobe) and outside free agents on manageable deals, like running back Emanuel Wilson and cornerback Noah Igbinoghene, to compete for jobs made available by the lost talent to other teams. But as key contributors left Seattle this offseason, Schneider has also identified the Seahawks' core pieces. He recently signed the best player on his team, Smith-Njigba, to a four-year, $168.6 million deal, making him the highest-paid receiver in league history. Keeping the young and elite performer around ensures that Darnold will have his security blanket on the roster for the foreseeable future. And with Darnold on a three-year, $100.5 million deal, Schneider doesnt have to worry about negotiating a new deal with his starting quarterback this offseason. "Its huge because of the competitor and person he is," Schneider told me about the Smith-Njigba signing. "The way he handles his business, theres zero problems. He just shows up every day and acts like hes been there before." Schneider will have to dig deep in the draft, though, to find some immediate help this offseason. The Seahawks only have four selections in this years draft, although they do have their own pick in each of the first three rounds. However, because the 2027 draft class is considered deeper than this years group, Schneider is attempting to load up for 2027. Seattle is projected to have four compensatory picks in 2027 due to the lost players in free agency. Including those projected selections, the Seahawks are expected to have 12 picks in 2027. Along with signing Smith-Njigba, the Seahawks are also expected to extend the contract of fellow 2023 first-round pick Devon Witherspoon at some point this offseason. And the Seahawks have already signed offensive tackles Charles Cross and Abe Lucas, ensuring that much of the offensive talent around Darnold is back for another season. Schneider has pinpointed the foundational pieces for the team at premium positions as they gear up to chase another Super Bowl. "Its about identifying what your foundational pieces are, and what the landscape looks like at certain positions," Schneider told me. "Its not about those guys in particular [that we lost in free agency], its about the position and if you can replace them or not. "Obviously, those guys are unique people. And were not going to be able to replace the people. But those are positions we know were going to have to address. And we felt like from a depth standpoint and what other options are out there that we could to do that. We have a cool mix on our roster now of young guys who have never hit free agency before, and now a group that is hitting free agency for the first time. And you saw it with Jax."

FIFA appears to have technical difficulties with World Cup ticket sales
FIFA appeared to have technical difficulties when it resumed World Cup ticket sales Wednesday after the 48-team field was finalized.Soccer's governing body did not say which games and price categories were available. Some people who clicked on what FIFA called its last-minute sales phase when sales opened at 11 a.m. EDT were directed into a queue for "PMA late qualifier supporters sales phase," aimed for a segment of fans for the six nations who earned berths on Tuesday.FIFA appeared to have lengthy waits to purchase tickets, with people who joined the queue at the start still waiting to get through the queue 90 minutes later.FIFA did not have an explanation for why the link misdirection occurred but said around noon that the links were working properly.FIFA also said that not all remaining tickets were being put on sale for the 104 games to be played in the U.S., Mexico and Canada from June 11 to July 19 and that additional tickets will be released on a rolling basis. This was the fifth phase of ticket sales following a Visa presale draw from Sept. 10-19, an early ticket draw from Oct. 27-31, a random selection draw from Dec. 11 to Jan. 13 and an unscheduled 48-hour availability in late February.FIFA said this phase, which will remain open through the tournament, marked the first time a specific seat location could be purchased rather than a request for a ticket in a category.FIFA is using dynamic pricing for the tournament, which will be played in 11 U.S. cities plus three in Mexico and two in Canada. For the month-long sales phase after the Dec. 5 draw, tickets were priced at $140 to $8,680. After complaints, FIFA said $60 tickets would be made available to each participating national federation for their most loyal supporters, an amount likely to be 400-700 per team for each match. The employment of dynamic ticket pricing for the 2026 FWC starkly contrasts with FIFAs core mission to promote the accessible and inclusive promotion and development of soccer globally, 69 Democratic members of Congress wrote in a March 10 letter to FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Despite host cities cooperation in bringing the vision of the largest, most global World Cup in history to fruition, the consequences of dynamic pricing will make the 2026 FWC the most financially exclusionary and inaccessible to date.FIFA also has its own resale market, collecting 15% from both the buyer and seller.Bosnia-Herzegovina, Congo, the Czech Republic, Iraq, Sweden and Turkey completed the World Cup field. Fans of teams eliminated Tuesday could attempt to resell tickets they already had purchased, nations that include Italy, Poland, Denmark, Jamaica and Bolivia.Infantino claimed in January that the amount of ticket requests FIFA had received was the equivalent of the request for 1,000 years of World Cups at once. This is unique, he said at the time. Its incredible. It was unclear if many of those requests were for seats in the lowest-price categories.Fan groups have voiced concern over the soaring costs for resold tickets and one filed a formal complaint to the European Commission last month.Infantino defended FIFA's cut of resales, saying the governing body was engaged in a legal commercial activity under U.S. law. Some European countries have laws which can restrict resale by requiring tickets to be sold for face value or only by authorized partners of the event organizers.___AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

Andy Murray launches new shoe brand 'made in beans' to rival Roger Federer
Sir Andy Murray has teamed up with sustainable footwear company hylo in a partnership revealed today through a brilliantly tongue-in-cheek promotional campaign. The former Wimbledon champion appears in a mock press conference that's wonderfully chaotic microphones fail to work and bits of the stage keep collapsing around him. It's classic Murray, really, poking fun at his reputation as a serious Scot while addressing the elephant in the room: is he trying to take on Roger Federer's hugely successful On shoe brand, which currently boasts a market valuation of roughly 15 billion? The timing raised eyebrows, but this is genuinely not an April Fools' joke.In the video, Murray insists his new venture has absolutely nothing to do with Federer's success in the running shoe market."It's about my belief in joining a world-class company like hylo, and their ability to make the cleanest, highest-performance running shoes," he explains, just as a cameraman accidentally wanders into shot and part of the stage gives way.But then comes that knowing grin straight to camera suggesting he's very much hoping to chip away at his old rival's empire. When journalists bring up his 11-14 losing record against Federer on court, Murray fires back: "We had some good matches. I like to think I did alright. I mean, I did win Wimbledon and the Olympics."The shoes themselves are genuinely innovative, crafted from castor beans, corn and seaweed rather than traditional synthetic materials.Whether hylo can genuinely compete with the likes of On, Nike and Adidas remains to be seen, but the eco-friendly angle certainly sets them apart.Since hanging up his racket following the 2024 Olympic Games, Murray has kept himself busy with various business interests. His investment in Game4Padel has proven particularly fruitful, with the company becoming the UK's leading developer of new padel facilities. He was also an early backer of sportswear brand Castore, whose kit he wore throughout the final years of his playing career, and has more recently put money into Manors Golf.Murray isn't the only sporting name backing hylo either Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford is among several high-profile athletes who joined the company's latest funding round. Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
