Lalas: Mauricio Pochettino's Lineup Changes Spell 'Borderline Panic' For USA
Alexi Lalas isn't hitting the panic button on the United States men's national team's chances of making it out of Group D at the 2026 World Cup, but he is concerned about manager Mauricio Pochettino's process following its 0-2 showing during its latest stage of friendlies. Following the USA's 2-0 loss to Portugal on Tuesday, Lalas questioned why Pochettino has continued to mess around with the squad's formation with the World Cup just over two months away. "We're not fooling anybody. We're not sneaking up on anybody with the way we're playing," Lalas said on the latest episode of "State of the Union." "If Pochettino honestly believes playing four is better for this team and is the primary way we're going to play, even though we're going to come out as three, that's fine. That's OK. I want some consistency. From the outside, I want some consistency." Prior to the losses to Belgium and Portugal over the last week, the United States had largely deployed a 3-4-2-1 formation in its recent matches. However, it appeared to use a 4-2-3-1 formation as it was outscored, 7-2, in the last two friendlies, showing signs of weakness on the defensive end. But that wasn't the only notable change Pochettino made during one of the friendlies. He gave Matt Turner his first start in net in nearly a year during Saturday's friendly against Belgium. Turner allowed five goals in that match, leading some to wonder why he was even out there in the first place, considering how well Matt Freese has played as of late. For Lalas, Pochettino's constant tinkering during important friendlies sent a reminder of a bad World Cup memory, and he is worried that Pochettino might be walking down the same path. "I remember back in 98 when we changed to the 3-6-1, and everyone kind of looked around under Steve Sampson and he might believe thats the way we should've gone, and it's oftentimes associated to a game or a moment when things go great like and it's like, Ah, this is great. This is how we shouldve been playing all the time,'" Lalas said. "That's very, very dangerous to do, especially as you get closer to the World Cup. This window, I went back to scratching my head more when it came to Mauricio Pochettino because of the experimentation." FOX Sports soccer studio host Rob Stone not only shared the same concerns as Lalas, but he also wondered if Pochettino's squad might put itself in a hole if what he does works in the United States' friendlies against Senegal and Germany. "It's a sign to me of borderline panic. What's working is not working. My best-laid plans are not happening right now, and I need to figure something out because clearly things aren't happening," Stone said. "I don't know where the US is going to get any confidence before they take on Paraguay. Like, two real good quality tests in May and June. If something works in one of those two games, all of a sudden, we're putting chips over there like, Here we go. This is now what weve got to do.' That worries me." Still, Lalas is bullish about the United States advancing out of its group. Trkiye, which beat the United States in a friendly last year, completed its impressive run to qualify for the World Cup and join the United States in Group D on Tuesday, but Lalas thinks the overall talent in the group should allow the Americans to advance to the knockout stage. "Not for me. I'm not happy about this window, and I would've liked to have been more confident coming out of this window. I would put this group against any other group in the past in terms of not just coming out, but winning the group. I do think this team, despite the problems we're talking about right now, will rise to the occasion. I'm not in a worse place after this window. Of course, I'm disappointed and concerned. But I don't think [the USA] has regressed."

Suns injury update. Starting big closer to returning on road trip
CHARLOTTE Phoenix Suns center Mark Williams is listed as questionable for Thursdays game, April 2, against his former team, the Charlotte Hornets, at Spectrum Center.Williams played his first three NBA seasons with the Hornets before being traded to the Suns, who sent two first-round draft selections to Charlotte for the 7-footer out of Duke. Before the 2025-26 season, Williams expressed his feelings towards the Hornets, who looked to move him to the Los Angeles Lakers before last seasons trade deadline, but the trade was rescinded due to Williams failing the Lakers team physical.Just to be where you're wanted is always great, Williams said at the Suns media day on Sept. 24. To be here is exciting. Charlotte was ultimately where I was drafted to. There was a belief in me at some point, but once you trade me the first time, it was only a matter of time before I was gone. So I knew that was coming. I just intend to make them regret that decision every time I'm on the court.Williams missed Phoenixs last 15 games with left foot third metatarsal stress reaction. The Suns (42-33) are 7-8 during this stretch as theyre coming off a 115-111 loss March 31 to the Orlando Magic in the second of a back-to-back to start this four-game road trip.Williams missed the first matchup March 8 against the Hornets (40-36) in Phoenix. The Suns won, 111-99.Suns coach Jordan Ott said Williams reacted well to playing 5-on-5 for the second time in three days Monday in Memphis.Seems like he came out of it pretty well, Ott said pregame Tuesday. Thats a good sign. He continues to improve and it seems like were getting there. Williams is averaging 11.6 points and 8.1 rebounds in a career-high 56 games in his first year in Phoenix after three injury-filled years with the Hornets. He played a total of 106 games for Charlotte. A first-round pick in the 2022 draft, Williams averaged 12.3 points and 8.8 rebounds in his three years with the Hornets.Haywood Highsmith (right knee injury management) and Amir Coffey (left ankle sprain) are ruled out of Thursdays game. Highsmith has missed seven straight games and Coffey has been sidelined eight consecutive games.Dillon Brooks made his return in Tuesday's loss after missing 18 consecutive games with a fractured left hand. Wearing a bandage on his non-shooting left hand, Brooks scored nine points on 4-of-13 shooting.Just glad he's out there, Suns coach Jordan Ott said after the game. Seemed to come out healthy. No hits on that thing. He'll get all that other stuff. Just good to have him out there. The Hornets have ruled PJ Hall out with right ankle soreness.Phoenix is seventh in the West while Charlotte stands 10th in the East. With seven games left in the regular season, the Suns are 4 games behind the Houston Rockets (46-29) for sixth. They have a three-game lead on the Los Angeles Clippers (39-37), who are eighth. The top six teams advance to the playoffs in each conference while teams 7-10 battle in the play-in tournament for the seventh and eighth seeds. If the play-in started today, the Suns would host the Clippers for the seventh seed in the West. The loser would play the winner of the 9-10 game for the eighth seed. The Portland Trail Blazers (39-38) are ninth in the West and the Golden State Warriors (36-39) stand 10th.Phoenix went 2-2 versus the Clippers, 2-1 against the Blazers and 1-3 versus the Warriors, who are down Stephen Curry with a knee injury that has sidelined the superstar for two months.Warriors coach Steve Kerr said Tuesday that Curry could return before the end of the regular season, the Associated Press reported.
