The Red Sox pelvic thrust hit celebration needs to go
NEW YORK, NY - AUGUST 23: Ceddanne Rafaela #3 of the Boston Red Sox celebrates after hitting a double in the fourth inning during the game between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on Saturday, August 23, 2025 in New York, New York. (Photo by Evan Yu/MLB Photos via Getty Images) | MLB Photos via Getty ImagesThe Red Sox have taken some flak for their rocky start in this young season, and Im about to pile on. Its about the pelvic thrust hit celebration. Ill say up front that I dont care about being family friendly or anything like that. Here are my issues with it.Its not okay with female fansI have lost a large amount of enthusiasm for the 2026 team since I first saw that celebration. Its made it difficult for me to watch my beloved team. Why do women dislike this particular display of testosterone? In case it needs explaining, I can tell you that most girls and women have surely lost count of the number of times a guy (a stranger, classmate, coworker, the friend of a friend at a party, the list goes on) has thrust his pelvis in her direction. I mean without an invitation and outside of a dance-floor context. It starts early, its aggressive, and its not funny. For a moment I had an idea to ask other female fans about the Red Sox hit celebration and publish their thoughts and reactions. The first person I asked said she was grateful that the hit celebration wasnt [redacted: truly obscene gesture that women are uniquely subjected to, involving two fingers and flashing tongue]. She had a point, and I dropped the idea after that. Arent female fans entitled to more than a pathetic level of gratitude that things arent worse? Why do women have to pay this price to watch and try to enjoy mens professional sports? Its weakIts nowhere near the same league as some of the Red Sox earlier hit (and home run) celebrations. The airplane wings celebration was unique, hilarious, and a little weird. It served as a rallying point after that turbulent flight. The monster hands and the hip shimmy were fun. Theres more leeway with home run celebrations, since theyre not confined to the bag, and the Sox have really showed the depth of their creativity with those. The laundry cart and Wally head are classics. Putting on the medals from the Boston Marathon and Alex Coras 5K were meaningful and sweet celebrations. If they put their minds to it, Im sure the current team can come up with something just as great. Its unsportsmanlikeIn the NFL, that is. Rico Dowdle of the Carolina Panthers was given a 15-yard penalty and fined almost $15,000 in November 2025 for a similar celebration. Its unusual to find myself in alignment with the NFL, but sometimes the enemy of your enemy is your friend. Kudos to DeMarcus Lawrence of the Seattle Seahawks for trying to come up with acceptable alternatives! Heres his discussion with the referee in November 2025 about that.Note that the ref replied, As long as you dont give me that motion [offers light pelvic thrust for clarity], Im okay with that one [the suggested alternative].Its unoriginalIts a little tired at this point! The celebration is based on a 2013 skit from Key & Peele. NFL players have been working with this source material for years. The list includes Lance Moore in 2013, Von Miller in 2015, Aaron Rodgers and others in 2020. It was back in the pop culture spotlight again in 2025 because of Dowdle. Why are the 2026 Red Sox rehashing something from the last NFL season? Cant the Red Sox find something fresh to do on the field? [Insert joke here about their poor start to the 2026 season. Go ahead, Ill wait.]This charmless celebration leaves me in the difficult position of rooting for it to be replaced due to a sustained losing streak or more flight turbulence. Dont put me in that position, Sox.[Authors note: This being said, it appeared by Fridays home opener that the celebration is undergoing alterations. Marcelo Mayer performed an abbreviated version that toned down the pelvic thrusting, and devoted more time and energy to a two-handed pointing gesture toward the dugout. It was an improvement.]

Ronnie Lott, Anthony Munoz elevated USC's NFL draft reputation
USC football made history on a significant scale in Super Bowl IX in January of 1975. Lynn Swann of the Pittsburgh Steelers played Steve Riley of the Minnesota Vikings in the Super Bowl one year after they were drafted. Two USC rookies, both first-round NFL draft picks, met in the Super Bowl. This doesn't include Minnesota's Ron Yary, the No. 1 pick in the 1968 NFL draft. The quick rise of USC rookies from the first round to the Super Bowl was the story attached to the Swann-Riley plot line. Several years later, USC greats Ronnie Lott and Anthony Munoz met in Super Bowl XVI between the San Francisco 49ers and Cincinnati Bengals.Yes, this was not a meeting of USC first-round rookies. Munoz was in his second year with the Bengals after being drafted in 1980. Lott was a rookie, coming out of the 1981 NFL draft class. Nevertheless, Super Bowl XVI -- at the conclusion of the 1981 NFL season -- gave USC's NFL draft reputation (which was already sterling) an even bigger boost. Both Lott and Munoz were top-10 picks in the NFL draft -- Lott at 8, Munoz at 3. The two men instantly changed the trajectories of their respective franchises. The 49ers beat Munoz's Bengals in SB XVI to win their first Vince Lombardi Trophy in Lott's rookie season. Lott gave the 49ers essential toughness and physicality in the secondary to lead them from nowhere in 1980 to the promised land in 1981. Munoz similarly changed the equation for the Bengals. He gave veteran quarterback Ken Anderson a lockdown offensive lineman, who enabled Anderson to distribute the ball to an array of talented pass-catchers such as Isaac Curtis, Cris Collinsworth, Dan Ross, and others. The Bengals, like the 49ers, made their first Super Bowl in the 1981 season and emerged from pro football obscurity. To underscore the impact these two USC NFL draft studs had on their franchises, this was not the last time either team reached the Super Bowl. They both came back to the big game, San Francisco three more times under Lott and Munoz once more with Cincinnati. The 49ers nipped the Bengals 20-16 in a thrilling Super Bowl XXIII in January of 1989.USC had churned out great NFL draft classes for much of the 1960s and 1970s, but the early 1980s continued to lift the Trojans' NFL draft reputation to an even higher level. This article originally appeared on Trojans Wire: Ronnie Lott and Anthony Munoz created a major USC NFL draft milestone
