Wings prospect Cossa sits on the bench in AHL playoff opener
Detroit Red Wings top prospect Sebastian Cossa sat on the bench in the AHL playoff opener Saturday.The Grand Rapids Griffins bypassed first-round draft pick Cossa in favor of free agent Michal Postava, who made 22 saves and was named the second star in a 1-0 loss against the Manitoba Moose in Game 1 of the Central Division semifinal at the Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba.More: Goaltending depth backstops Grand Rapids Griffins' dominanceThe Moose lead the best-of-five series, 1-0. Game 2 is Sunday in Winnipeg at 3 p.m.When asked if Cossa would play in Game 2, Grand Rapids coach Dan Watson didn't pick the starter."Honestly, I think that in long playoff series, back-to-back nights, both guys have to be ready," Watson said."Whether we go back with Michal or Cossa tomorrow, both guys need to be ready at the drop of a hatbecause these series end pretty quick."Postava had a shutout until 2:26 left in the third period when Mason Shaw scored on the power play with defenseman Anton Johansson in the penalty box for high sticking.When asked if he was surprised he got the start in goal, Postava said, "maybe, a little bit.""I think if Cossa be there or I will be there, we will do the same job," Postava said. "We try to help the team. I think the coach trusts me."Cossa's last game was nearly two weeks ago when he combined for 29 saves with South Lyon's Trey Augustine in a scheduled goaltender change.Cossa stopped 19-of-22 shots in a 6-4 loss to the Cleveland Monsters on April 19."I think Michael (Postava) earned the start since the All-Star break," Watson said. "He's been excellent for us. He's given us opportunities to win every start. "He had a shutout in Milwaukee. He's played some tough opponents with big wins. We just felt that he would be the guy to go for us tonight."During the regular season, Cossa, 23, was 26-8-4 with a 2.33 goals-against average, .915 save percentage and five shutouts.Postava, 24, went 17-6-1 with a 1.71 GAA and .937 SVS, and four shutouts.The Griffins had 39 shots on goalie Domenic DiVincentiis, including four shots by Johansson, Carter Mazur, Sheldon Dries and Wojciech Stachowiak and three shots by Dominik Shine, Amadeus Lombardi, Jakub Rychlovsky and Eduards Tralmaks.The series shifts to Grand Rapids for Game 3 on Wednesday at 7 p.m.This article originally appeared on The Detroit News: Michal Postava started in goal in Grand Rapids' 1-0 loss in Winnipeg
