Northville girls flag football downs FGR, awaits playoff fate
While Northville huddled at the 40-yard line to celebrate its 20-0 win over first-place Ann Arbor Father Gabriel Richard on May 16, coach Chris Manno slipped out of the pile, pulled out his phone and checked the Detroit Lions website for the All Grit League standings. Were going to need Ypsi Lincoln to score seven tomorrow, the first-year coach said.Thats right, the division will likely come down to the third- and fourth-criteria tiebreakers to determine which school earns a berth to the state tournament in two weeks at Ford Field.A P-CEP win over Lincoln on May 17 would create a three-way tie for first place, with FGR, Northville and the Prowlers all finishing 3-1. Head-to-head results wouldnt break the tie either because, like the Spider-Man pointing meme, theyve all beaten each other. P-CEP snuck past Northville in Week 1, FGR edged P-CEP by a safety last week and the Mustangs defended Sports Den Field against FGR in their regular-season finale.Itll either be P-CEP or Northville representing the division in downtown Detroit, and its likely coming down to points against and point differential. Its kind of crazy because we thought we were out of (the postseason) after losing at the start of the season, said Northville QB Taylor Chrzanowski, who was 13 of 20 passing for 149 yards, two touchdowns and two one-point conversions. When we found out what we had to do to give us a chance, we just went out there and did what we had to do. Now, its just up to whatever happens tomorrow. The Mustangs coaches had them well prepared for FGR, including its offensive trickeration and run-heavy attack led by Reagan Fault, who rushed 17 times for 86 yards for the Irish. On the opening drive, Chrzanowski hit star pass rusher Lili Vettraino twice over the middle, including a 19-yard TD, and Northville never looked back.Vettraino, who finished with five QB hurries, four tackles for loss and one batted pass, helped the defense take over from there, highlighted by Izzie DeFore returning an interception 70 yards for a score to make it 13-0 before halftime.Ive just got to hustle, said Vettraino, who has been piling up defensive stats like shes playing Madden on rookie mode the past three games. I do what I can to help out my teammates because I just want us all to win. I feel like when I do good on defense, it can help out our team. Its certainly helped Chrzanowski, whos regularly working with great field position thanks to Vettrainos pass rush forcing interceptions. Maddie Chirgwin and Naomi Chou also picked off passes, while Chrzanowski snagged an interception at the 1-yard line during a goal-line stand. Our team has just improved a lot, Chrzanowski said. It feels good.Thats not to say its been easy. Chrzanowski has had to build chemistry with her receivers over the past month, but it's been going well.During last weeks 53-0 win over Saline, Chrzanowski threw for 228 yards, six TDs and five one-point conversions, earning Detroit Lions Player of the Week honors. Against a tougher opponent in FGR, she was just as effective, connecting with Brooke Schabel six times for 57 yards, one TD and one one-point conversion, Reese May three times for 18 yards and Elise Tappy twice for 14 yards, including a one-point conversion. Its been hard being in a role where I have to communicate a lot, but I think weve grown a lot as a team, Chrzanowski said. I think weve just developed a lot better connections as weve gotten to know each other, and our team has had a good environment (since Week 1).Its been quite the turnaround since a 12-6 Week 1 loss to P-CEP.The Mustangs thought they were out of the postseason then. Now, several of them will be on hand to watch the Prowlers host Lincoln on Cantons North Turf, which is fitting since P-CEP coach Derek Hoffman and offensive wizard Nick Troher were on hand for their game, quietly rooting for FGR to score a few TDs to make the tiebreaker math a little easier against the Railsplitters.Well be there at P-CEP, and well let the cards fall as they may, Manno said. We did everything that we could do, playing excellent today against a great team in FGR. Im really, really proud of the girls, and its all on them. Theyre just making plays, and we trust them. Were just so proud of them and how theyre working hard.Brandon Folsom covers high school sports in metro Detroit for Hometown Life.
