KERNERSVILLE Bishop McGuinness kept rolling in the playoffs. The top-seeded Villains scored the first 13 goals of the match including all nine of the first quarter and raced past eighth-seeded St. Stephens on Tuesday at Bishop in the third round of the NCHSAA 1A-6A West girls lacrosse playoffs."Despite the heat, I think we channeled our energy, played smart and we're pleased with the outcome," Bishop coach Christina Aho said.MK Suire scored seven goals becoming just the second freshman in program history to reach 100 goals in a season and dished three assists for the Villains (21-2), who reached the last three 1A/2A/3A state finals in the old classifications.Grace Gerber added four goals and an assist, while Cecilia Drabik followed with three goals. Stella Ropko, who had two assists, and Ellie Brown each scored two goals. Emery Grunwald had a goal and two assists.Morgan Aho had a goal and one assist, while Amelia Dorville and Dana Pirkl each chipped in a goal as Bishop continued another strong run its lone losses coming against larger 7A teams both ranked in the top 10 in the state."We still have a long road ahead of us even though it's only 10 days," Coach Aho said. "But it's good. It's just getting the girls mentally prepared at this point. Physically, we've got it. It's just keeping them there mentally through the next couple rounds."The Villains, ranked No. 25 in the state overall, controlled almost the entire match taking the lead 36 seconds in and reeling off successive scores that were often just seconds apart. They controlled draws, won loose balls and found space in prime position to score. By the time the Indians (12-7), who lost to Bishop in the third round last year too, scored midway through the second, the Villains were far ahead.Maddie Edwards and Aveanna Woelfel each made a save, splitting time in goal for the Villains who have a number of experienced, veteran players on their roster but also several younger players who are key contributors too.Bishop will next face fourth-seeded Pine Lake Prep (13-5) on Friday at 7 p.m. The winner will face second-seeded Lake Norman Charter or three-seeded Charlotte Catholic in Wednesday's regional championship. The state championship matches will be May 29-30 at Lenoir-Rhyne University."It's just keeping our heads in the game," Coach Aho said. "Again, focusing on the fundamentals and knowing that even when we are up a few goals, we still have got to communicate. We still have to keep the small things in the front of our mind."
