Youth footballer, 14, dies after ball hits him in the chest
A teenage footballer in Argentina has died after a ball struck him in the chest during an informal kickabout last Tuesday.Benjamin Valentin Donofrio, aged 14, was playing a casual match in La Banda when he took a forceful shot to his chest and abdomen area. The youngster was a member of the youth setup at Club Atletico Sarmiento de La Banda.Witnesses at the scene reported that Valentn immediately dropped to the ground, clearly experiencing intense pain from the impact.Medical professionals suspect the incident may have caused a lethal cardiac arrhythmia through a rare condition called commotio cordis. He initially rose to his feet after several seconds but took only a few steps before collapsing a second time in front of his teammates. The teenager then started having convulsions, which prompted those present to urgently summon emergency services to the pitch. When paramedics reached the scene, they transported Valentn by ambulance to the closest medical facility.During the journey, the 14-year-old went into cardiorespiratory arrest.Hospital staff attempted to resuscitate him using CPR upon his arrival, but their efforts proved unsuccessful and the young player could not be saved.Commotio cordis is a phenomenon that can occur when an impact to the chest happens at a precise moment during the heart's electrical cycle, causing severe rhythm disturbances. Though rare, it has been recorded in various sports following contact with balls, pucks and other projectiles that might otherwise seem harmless. The Banda and Robles Prosecutor's Unit has commissioned a post-mortem examination to establish whether the blow directly caused the death or if additional factors played a role.Valentin's club paid tribute online, stating: "We extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones during this painful time. He will always be remembered for his time with us."Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
