Cubs make trade with Mets for much 30-year-old pitcher
The Chicago Cubs jumped the trade deadline by more than a month on June 24, acquiring left-handed starter David Peterson from the New York Mets. The trade, however timely, was less about improving their own chances for contention at the expense of a last-place team, and more about getting through the season. The Cubs placed two starting pitchers Edward Cabrera and Ben Brown on the 15-day injured list in the last two days. They needed someone beyond Vince Velasquez, who was summoned from Triple-A earlier in the day. Peterson, whose role in the Mets pitching plans had dwindled, fit the bill.Jeff Passan of ESPN was first to report the trade.Peterson has a 6.09 ERA this season, but his 3.85 FIP suggests better things could be in store for him as his luck evens out.MORE: Cubs make trade, acquire pitcher from MarinersMore to come on this story.
