NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 21: Triple H attends the Fanatics Fest NYC 2025 at Javits Center on June 21, 2025 in New York City. (Photo by Slaven Vlasic/Getty Images)Getty ImagesThe WWE and crossover are synonymous, so when former UFC interim welterweight champion and Real American Freestyle Wrestler Colby Covington mentioned the promotion to me, it made a lot of sense. Let's talk wrestling.Key Facts at a GlanceWho: Colby Covington, former UFC interim welterweight champion, now competing in Real American FreestyleThe news: Covington told me he's had calls with Triple H and WWE about a possible appearanceHis stance: WWE is a "potential possibility," but he says he's all in on RAF for nowHistory: Covington already appeared in Impact Wrestling in 2017 in a storyline with Bobby LashleyHis model: Logan Paul's path from crossover attraction to full-time WWE starWhat Did Colby Covington Say About WWE?Talking to me ahead of his Real American Freestyle main event on July 18 in Milwaukee, Covington said the door to WWE is open at the top. He described having calls with Triple H and WWE about getting involved, while stressing that his focus right now is the RAF mat. You can watch the full interview here. This is not the first time Covington has talked about a jump to WWE. Covington has flagged a WWE move for years, and he already has real reps in the space, having left the UFC with the freedom to chase it. A conversation with the person running WWE's creative is the closest that talk has come to something concrete.Would Colby Covington's WWE Schedule Actually Work? The one hurdle Covington raised was the calendar. He pointed to WWE's travel load, the near-constant run of TV and premium live events, as the toughest part of any transition.Covington mentioned the WWE's schedule as the biggest challenge, but that's not likely to be a problem. The days of WWE expecting their performers, especially crossover talent, to work non-stop rigorous schedules is over. Covington would likely work at a rate close to Logan Paul's early schedule, before he went full time.WWE has leaned into that model for outside stars, protecting them with limited dates and specific feuds rather than a grueling loop. Can Colby Covington Cut a WWE Promo? We talked about mic work and how it is different in WWE than it is in MMA. Covington seemed to want to prove he can cut a promo with the best of them.Even breaking down his RAF opponent, he slipped into full third-person heel mode, saying the worst punishment the promotion could hand his rival was to "give him to Colby Covington."That cadence is not new for him. Hes a natural heel and has embraced it long before Josh Hokit tried to run plays from his playbook. He credited Bobby Lashley with teaching him how to shoot a promo during his Impact Wrestling run, and his entire UFC persona has read like pro wrestling concepts. On the mic, there is still a long way to go before he can deliver venom on par with CM Punks return promos and the like. What Would a Colby Covington WWE Run Look Like? For now, it is a someday. Covington was clear that RAF has his full attention, and WWE sits in the future tense. When it happens, the blueprint is obvious. He would come in as a part-time heel attraction, the exact role WWE built around Logan Paul, and lean on the mic work and the politics that already make him a lightning rod. A stage like SummerSlam is the kind of spot that turns a name like his into a one-night draw. The call from Triple H suggests WWE has already run that math, but I wouldnt expect his arrival in Minnesota. Perhaps a few more wins on the RAF mat, maybe even a bit of viral brawl with Tsarukyan and things could change. This article was originally published on Forbes.com
