Former Grainger basketball coach Doug McBee dies, father of Skylar McBee, dies
Former Grainger basketball coach Doug McBee died following a rollover tractor accident on his farm on July 20, according to the Grainger County Sheriff's department. He was 73.McBee initially taught at Rutledge High School before it rebranded to Grainger in 2008. He was an assistant coach for both boys and girls basketball.McBee is survived by his wife Sue and three children, Chase, Skylar and Megan Schrock. He coached his sons in high school, including Skylar, who became a walk-on at Tennessee basketball in 2009. Skylar later earned a full scholarship and played for the Vols for four seasons under coaches Bruce Pearl and Cuonzo Martin.Tennessee's thrilling win over Kansas in 2010, highlighted by Skylar McBee's 3-pointer with 36 seconds left in the game, was Doug McBees favorite in his sons four years and he was at all of them home and away. Sue McBee missed just a handful of games, due only to working on mission trips in Haiti, a family hobby. In high school, Skylar got his hands dirty in Belize, Haiti, Dominican Republic and a South Dakota Indian reservation.Here he is a walk-on, who would even think hed play in that game and that theyd actually throw him the ball in that situation, Doug McBee told Knox News in 2013. Then, who would think hed even get a shot off, let alone make it? A walk-on freshman? What are the odds of that? It was something out of a dream.Grainger High School retired Skylar McBee's jersey in 2012 after graduating with 2,363 career points, the second-most in school history. "We're so appreciative and so humbled because of it," Doug told Knox News at the ceremony. "We're just Grainger Countians and we're just so proud of the way they've supported him and taken this opportunity to honor him. Words can't express how you feel at moments like this."Doug McBee's visitation and funeral is scheduled for July 27 at Blue Springs Baptist Church beginning at 5 p.m. with a celebration of life to follow at 7 p.m.Wynton Jackson covers high school sports for Knox News.
